Quantum plasmon enhanced nonlinear wave mixing in graphene nanoflakes

A distant-neighbor quantum-mechanical method is used to study the nonlinear optical wave mixing in graphene nanoflakes (GNFs), including sum- and difference-frequency generation, as well as four-wave mixing. Our analysis shows that molecular-scale GNFs support quantum plasmons in the visible spectrum region, and significant enhancement of nonlinear optical wave mixing is achieved. Specifically, the second- and third-order wave-mixing polarizabilities of GNFs are dramatically enhanced, provided that one (or more) of the input or output frequencies coincide with a quantum plasmon resonance. Moreover, by embedding a cavity into hexagonal GNFs, we show that one can break the structural inversion symmetry and enable otherwise forbidden second-order wave mixing, which is found to be enhanced by the quantum plasmon resonance too. This study reveals that the molecular-sized graphene could be used in the quantum regime for nanoscale nonlinear optical devices and ultrasensitive molecular sensors.

Propagation dynamics of the circular Airy Gaussian vortex beams in the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We have investigated the propagation dynamics of the circular Airy Gaussian vortex beams (CAGVBs) in a (2+1)-dimesional optical system discribed by fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation (FNSE). By combining fractional diffraction with nonlinear effects, the abruptly autofocusing effect becomes weaker, the radius of the focusing beams becomes bigger and the autofocusing length will be shorter with increase of fractional diffraction Lévy index. It has been found that the abruptly autofocusing effect becomes weaker and the abruptly autofocusing length becomes longer if distribution factor of CAGVBs increases for fixing the Lévy index. The roles of the input power and the topological charge in determining the autofocusing properties are also discussed. Then, we have found the CAGVBs with outward acceleration and shown the autodefocusing properties. Finally, the off-axis CAGVBs with positive vortex pairs in the FNSE optical system have shown interesting features during propagation.

Stabilization of single- and multi-peak solitons in the fractional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a trapping potential

We address the existence and stability of localized modes in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schroedinger equation (FNSE) with the focusing cubic or focusing-defocusing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and a confining harmonic-oscillator (HO) potential. Approximate analytical solutions are obtained in the form of Hermite-Gauss modes. The linear stability analysis and direct simulations reveal that, under the action of the cubic self-focusing, the single-peak ground state and dipole mode are stabilized by the HO potential at values of the Levy index (the fractionality degree) alpha = 1 and alpha < 1, which lead, respectively, to the critical or supercritical collapse in free space. In addition to that, the inclusion of the quintic self-defocusing provides stabilization of higher-order modes, with the number of local peaks up to seven, at least.

Soliton dynamics in a fractional complex Ginzburg-Landau model

The general objective of the work is to study dynamics of dissipative solitons in the framework of a one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) of a fractional order. To estimate the shape of solitons in fractional models, we first develop the variational approximation for solitons of the fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE), and an analytical approximation for exponentially decaying tails of the solitons. Proceeding to numerical consideration of solitons in fractional CGLE, we study, in necessary detail, effects of the respective Levy index (LI) on the solitons' dynamics. In particular, dependence of stability domains in the model's parameter space on the LI is identified. Pairs of in-phase dissipative solitons merge into single pulses, with the respective merger distance also determined by LI.

Localized modes in dissipative lattice media: An overview

We overview recent theoretical studies of the dynamics of one- and two-dimensional spatial dissipative solitons in models based on the complex Ginzburg-Landau equations with the cubic-quintic combination of loss and gain terms, which include imaginary, real, or complex spatially periodic potentials. The imaginary potential represents periodic modulation of the local loss and gain. It is shown that the effective gradient force, induced by the inhomogeneous loss distribution, gives rise to three generic propagation scenarios for one-dimensional (1D) dissipative solitons: transverse drift, persistent swing motion, and damped oscillations. When the lattice-average loss/gain value is zero, and the real potential has spatial parity opposite to that of the imaginary component, the respective complex potential is a realization of the parity-time symmetry. Under the action of lattice potentials of the latter type, 1D solitons feature unique motion regimes in the form of transverse drift and persistent swing. In the 2D geometry, three types of axisymmetric radial lattices are considered, viz., ones based solely on the refractive-index modulation, or solely on the linear-loss modulation, or on a combination of both. The rotary motion of solitons in such axisymmetric potentials can be effectively controlled by varying the strength of the initial tangential kick.

Solitary modes in nonlocal media with inhomogeneous self-repulsive nonlinearity

We demonstrate the existence of two species of stable bright solitons, fundamental and dipole ones, in one-dimensional self-defocusing nonlocal media, with the local value of nonlinearity coefficient having one or several minima and growing at any rate faster than |x| at large values of coordinate x. The model can be derived for a slab optical waveguide with thermal nonlinearity. The most essential difference from the local counterpart of this system is the competition between two different spatial scales, the one determining the modulation pattern of the nonlinearity coefficient, and the correlation length of the nonlocality. The competition is explicitly exhibited by analytically obtained asymptotic form of generic solutions. Particular exact solutions are found analytically, and full soliton families are constructed in a numerical form. The multi-channel settings, with two or three local minima of the nonlinearity coefficient, are considered here for the first time, for both local and nonlocal models of the present type. States with multiple solitons launched into different channels are stable if the spacing between them exceeds a certain minimum value. A regime of stable Josephson oscillations of solitons between parallel channels is reported too.

Stable surface solitons in truncated complex potentials

We show that surface solitons in the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with truncated complex periodic potential can be stabilized by linear homogeneous losses, which are necessary to balance gain in the near-surface channel arising from the imaginary part of potential. Such solitons become stable attractors when the strength of homogeneous losses acquires values from a limited interval and they exist in focusing and defocusing media. The domains of stability of surface solitons shrink with increase of the amplitude of imaginary part of complex potential.

Collapse suppression and stabilization of dipole solitons in two-dimensional media with anisotropic semi-local nonlinearity

We consider the impact of anisotropic nonlocality on the arrest of the collapse and stabilization of dipole-mode (DM) solitons in two-dimensional (2D) models of optical media with the diffusive nonlinearity. The nonlocal nonlinearity is made anisotropic through elliptic diffusivity. The medium becomes semi-local in the limit case of 1D diffusivity. Families of fundamental and DM solitons are found by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in a numerical form. We demonstrate that the collapse of 2D beams is arrested even in the semi-local system. The anisotropic nonlocality readily stabilizes the DM solitons, which are completely unstable in the isotropic medium.

Two-dimensional gap solitons in elliptic-lattice potentials

We study two-dimensional (2D) matter-wave gap solitons trapped in an elliptically deformed concentric lattice potential, within the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with self-attraction or self-repulsion. For a fixed eccentricity of the lattice, soliton families are found in both the repulsive and attractive models. In the former case, the analysis reveals two kinds of gap solitons trapped in the first oval trough (the ring-shaped potential minimum closest to the center): elliptic annular solitons (EASs), and double solitons (DSs), which are formed by two tightly localized density peaks located at diametrically opposite points of the trough, with zero phase difference between them. With the decrease of the norm, the density distribution in the EAS along the azimuthal direction changes from nearly-uniform to double-peaked and, eventually, to the DS. In the attractive model, there exist only DSs in the oval trough, while EASs are not found. All such solitons without the angular momentum (l = 0) are fully stable. For l is not equal to 0, vortical solitons - both EASs with a sufficiently large norm (in the repulsive model) and DSs (in models with both signs of the nonlinearity) - are quasi-stable, exhibiting rocking motion in the elliptic trough (we consider the cases of l=1 and l=2). At smaller values of the norm, the vortical annular solitons (in the repulsive model) are unstable. Stable fundamental solitons trapped in the central potential well are investigated too, in both the attractive and repulsive models, by means of the variational approximation and numerical methods.
