Reclaiming the Lost Conformality in a non-Hermitian Quantum 5-state Potts Model

Conformal symmetry, emerging at critical points, can be lost when renormalization group fixed points collide. Recently, it was proposed that after collisions, real fixed points transition into the complex plane, becoming complex fixed points described by complex conformal field theories (CFTs). Although this idea is compelling, directly demonstrating such complex conformal fixed points in microscopic models remains highly demanding. Furthermore, these concrete models are instrumental in unraveling the mysteries of complex CFTs and illuminating a variety of intriguing physical problems, including weakly first-order transitions in statistical mechanics and the conformal window of gauge theories. In this work, we have successfully addressed this complex challenge for the (1+1)-dimensional quantum $5$-state Potts model, whose phase transition has long been known to be weakly first-order. By adding an additional non-Hermitian interaction, we successfully identify two conjugate critical points located in the complex parameter space, where the lost conformality is restored in a complex manner. Specifically, we unambiguously demonstrate the radial quantization of the complex CFTs and compute the operator spectrum, as well as new operator product expansion coefficients that were previously unknown.

Conformal bootstrap bounds for the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid and $N=7$ Stiefel liquid

We apply the conformal bootstrap technique to study the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid (i.e. $N_f=4$ QED$_3$) and the newly proposed $N=7$ Stiefel liquid (i.e. a conjectured 3d non-Lagrangian CFT without supersymmetry). For the $N_f=4$ QED$_3$, we focus on the monopole operator and ($SU(4)$ adjoint) fermion bilinear operator. We bootstrap their single correlators as well as the mixed correlators between them. We first discuss the bootstrap kinks from single correlators. Some exponents of these bootstrap kinks are close to the expected values of QED$_3$, but we provide clear evidence that they should not be identified as the QED$_3$. By requiring the critical phase to be stable on the triangular and the kagome lattice, we obtain rigorous numerical bounds for the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid and the Stiefel liquid. For the triangular and kagome Dirac spin liquid, the rigorous lower bounds of the monopole operator's scaling dimension are $1.046$ and $1.105$, respectively. These bounds are consistent with the latest Monte Carlo results.

Emergent QCD$_3$ Quantum Phase Transitions of Fractional Chern Insulators

Motivated by the recent work of QED$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum critical points of fractional Chern insulators (Phys. Rev. X \textbf{8}, 031015, (2018)), we study its non-Abelian generalizations, namely QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum phase transitions of fractional Chern insulators. These phase transitions are described by Dirac fermions interacting with non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields ($U(N)$, $SU(N)$, $USp(N)$, etc.). Utilizing the level-rank duality of Chern-Simons gauge theory and non-Abelian parton constructions, we discuss two types of QCD$_3$ quantum phase transitions. The first type happens between two Abelian states in different Jain sequences, as opposed to the QED3 transitions between Abelian states in the same Jain sequence. A good example is the transition between $σ^{xy}=1/3$ state and $σ^{xy}=-1$ state, which has $N_f=2$ Dirac fermions interacting with a $U(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge field. The second type is naturally involving non-Abelian states. For the sake of experimental feasibility, we focus on transitions of Pfaffian-like states, including the Moore-Read Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, particle-hole Pfaffian, etc. These quantum phase transitions could be realized in experimental systems such as fractional Chern insulators in graphene heterostructures.

Field-induced QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum criticalities in Kitaev materials

Kitaev materials are promising for realizing exotic quantum spin liquid phases, such as a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. Motivated by recent experiments in these materials, we theoretically study the novel field-induced quantum phase transitions from the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid to the symmetry-broken zigzag phase and to the trivial polarized state. Utilizing the recently developed dualities of gauge theories, we find these transitions can be described by critical bosons or gapless fermions coupled to emergent non-Abelian gauge fields, and the critical theories are of the type of a QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons theory. We propose that all these exotic quantum phase transitions can potentially be direct and continuous in Kitaev materials, and we present sound evidence for this proposal. Therefore, besides being systems with intriguing quantum magnetism, Kitaev materials may also serve as table-top experimental platforms to study the interesting dynamics of emergent strongly interacting quarks and gluons in $2+1$ dimensions.

Entanglement Hamiltonian of Many-body Dynamics in Strongly-correlated Systems

A powerful perspective in understanding non-equilibrium quantum dynamics is through the time evolution of its entanglement content. Yet apart from a few guiding principles for the entanglement entropy, to date, not much else is known about the refined characters of entanglement propagation. Here, we unveil signatures of the entanglement evolving and information propagation out-of-equilibrium, from the view of entanglement Hamiltonian. As a prototypical example, we study quantum quench dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model by means of time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group simulation. Before reaching equilibration, it is found that a current operator emerges in entanglement Hamiltonian, implying that entanglement spreading is carried by particle flow. In the long-time limit subsystem enters a steady phase, evidenced by the dynamic convergence of the entanglement Hamiltonian to the expectation of a thermal ensemble. Importantly, entanglement temperature of steady state is spatially independent, which provides an intuitive trait of equilibrium. We demonstrate that these features are consistent with predictions from conformal field theory. These findings not only provide crucial information on how equilibrium statistical mechanics emerges in many-body dynamics, but also add a tool to exploring quantum dynamics from perspective of entanglement Hamiltonian.

From spinon band topology to the symmetry quantum numbers of monopoles in Dirac spin liquids

The interplay of symmetry and topology has been at the forefront of recent progress in quantum matter. Here we uncover an unexpected connection between band topology and the description of competing orders in a quantum magnet. Specifically we show that aspects of band topology protected by crystalline symmetries determine key properties of the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which can be defined on the honeycomb, square, triangular and kagomé lattices. At low energies, the DSL on all these lattices is described by an emergent Quantum Electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with $N_f=4$ flavors of Dirac fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field. However the symmetry properties of the magnetic monopoles, an important class of critical degrees of freedom, behave very differently on different lattices. In particular, we show that the lattice momentum and angular momentum of monopoles can be determined from the charge (or Wannier) centers of the corresponding spinon insulator. We also show that for DSLs on bipartite lattices, there always exists a monopole that transforms trivially under all microscopic symmetries owing to the existence of a parent SU(2) gauge theory. We connect our results to generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems and also derive the time-reversal and reflection properties of monopoles. Our results indicate that recent insights into free fermion band topology can also guide the description of strongly correlated quantum matter.

Bridging coupled wires and lattice Hamiltonian for two-component bosonic quantum Hall states

We investigate a model of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field by means of a coupled-wire approach. It has been numerically shown that this model exhibits at half filling the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state, which is a symmetry-protected topological phase protected by the $U(1)$ particle conservation [Y.-C. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116803 (2015)]. By combining the bosonization approach and a coupled-wire construction, we analytically confirm this finding and show that it even holds in the strongly anisotropic (quasi-one-dimensional) limit. We discuss the stability of the BIQH phase against tunneling that break the separate particle conservations on different sublattices down to a global particle conservation. We further argue that a phase transition between two different BIQH phases is in a deconfined quantum critical point described by two copies of the (2+1)-dimensional $O(4)$ nonlinear sigma model with the topological $θ$ term at $θ=π$. Finally we predict a possible fractional quantum Hall state, the Halperin (221) state, at 1/6 filling.

Kagome chiral spin liquid as a gauged U(1) symmetry protected topological phase

While the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) on a class of spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets is by now well-established numerically, a controlled theoretical path from the lattice model leading to a low energy topological field theory is still lacking. This we provide via an explicit construction, starting from reformulating a microscopic model for a CSL as a lattice gauge theory, and deriving the low-energy form of its continuum limit. A crucial ingredient is the realisation that the bosonic spinons of the gauge theory exhibit a $U(1)$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which upon promoting its $U(1)$ global symmetry to a local gauge structure ("gauging") yields the CSL. We suggest that such an explicit lattice-based construction involving gauging of an SPT phase can be applied more generally to understand topological spin liquids.

Kagome spin liquid: a deconfined critical phase driven by $U(1)$ gauge fluctuation

We investigate the nature of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase of the spin-$1/2$ nearest-neighbor XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Recent numerical calculations suggest that such a kagome spin liquid is insensitive to the XXZ anisotropy and is adjacent to a chiral spin liquid phase. Reformulating the problem in terms of a $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory with dynamical bosonic spinons, we propose that the kagome spin liquid can be understood as a deconfined critical phase extended by the $U(1)$ gauge fluctuation from a deconfined critical point between a symmetry-protected topological phase and a superfluid phase. Crucially, the stability of this QSL is ensured by the gauge fluctuation and hence our description necessarily falls beyond the conventional mean-field constructions of QSLs. Our work also makes an interesting connection between the critical spin liquid, deconfined criticality, symmetry protected topological phase and topological order.

Bosonic Integer Quantum Hall effect in an interacting lattice model

We study a bosonic model with correlated hopping on a honeycomb lattice, and show that its ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) phase, a prominent example of a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. By using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, we establish the existence of the BIQH phase by providing clear numerical evidence: (i) a quantized Hall conductance with $|σ_{xy}|= 2$ (ii) two counter propagating gapless edge modes. Our simple model is an example of a novel class of systems that can stabilize SPT phases protected by a continuous symmetry on lattices and opens up new possibilities for the experimental realization of these exotic phases.

Distinct Spin Liquids and their Transitions in Spin-1/2 XXZ Kagome Antiferromagnets

By using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the spin-liquid phases of spin-$1/2$ XXZ kagome antiferromagnets. We find that the emergence of spin liquid phase does not depend on the anisotropy of the XXZ interaction. In particular, the two extreme limits---Ising (strong $S^z$ interaction) and XY (zero $S^z$ interaction)---host the same spin-liquid phases as the isotropic Heisenberg model. Both the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid and the chiral spin liquid with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking are obtained. We show they evolve continuously into each other by tuning the second- and third-neighbor interactions. At last, we discuss the possible implication of our results on the nature of spin liquid in nearest neighbor XXZ kagome antiferromagnets, including the most studied nearest neighbor spin-$1/2$ kagome anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model.

Chiral spin liquid in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model

Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) chiral spin liquid (CSL) is a type of quantum spin liquid without time-reversal symmetry, and it is considered as the parent state of an exotic type of superconductivity--anyon superconductor. Such exotic state has been sought for more than twenty years, however it remains unclear whether it can exist in realistic system where time-reversal symmetry is breaking (T-breaking) spontaneously. By using the density matrix renormalization group, we show that KL CSL exists in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model (KHM), which has spontaneously T-breaking. We find that our model has two topological degenerate ground states, which exhibit non-vanishing scalar chirality order and are protected by finite excitation gap. Further, we identify this state as KL CSL by the characteristic edge conformal field theory from the entanglement spectrum and the quasiparticles braiding statistics extracted from the modular matrix. We also study how this CSL phase evolves as the system approaches the nearest neighbor KHM.

Obtaining topological degenerate ground states by the density matrix renormalization group

We develop the density matrix renormalization group approach to systematically identify the topological order of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) through adiabatically obtaining different topological sectors of the QSL on an infinite cylinder. As an application, we study the anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model known for hosting a Z$_2$ QSL, however no numerical simulations have been able to access all four sectors before. We obtain the complete set of four topological degenerate ground states distinguished by the presence or absence of the spinon and vison quasiparticle line, which fully characterizes the topological nature of the quantum phase. We have also studied the kagome Heisenberg model, which has attracted a lot of recent attention. We find two topological sectors accurately and also estimate various properties of the other topological sectors, where the larger correlation length is found indicating the possible proximity to another phase.

Measuring Majorana fermions qubit state and non-Abelian braiding statistics in quenched inhomogeneous spin ladders

We study the Majorana fermions (MFs) in a spin ladder model. We propose and numerically show that the MFs qubit state can be read out by measuring the fusion excitation in the quenched inhomogeneous spin ladders. Moreover, we construct an exactly solvable T-junction spin ladder model, which can be used to implement braiding operations of MFs. With the braiding processes simulated numerically as non-equilibrium quench processes, we verify that the MFs in our spin ladder model obey the non-Abelian braiding statistics. Our scheme not only provides a promising platform to study the exotic properties of MFs, but also has broad range of applications in topological quantum computation.
