A note on multi-trace EYM amplitudes in four dimensions

In four dimensions, a tree-level double-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitude with two negative-helicity gluons (the $(g^-,g^-)$-configuration) satisfies a symmetric spanning forest formula, which was derived from the graphic expansion rule. On another hand, in the framework of Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula, the maximally-helicity-violating (MHV) amplitudes are supported by the MHV solution of scattering equations. The relationship between the symmetric formula for double-trace amplitudes, and the MHV sector of Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula in four dimensions is still not clear. In this note, we promote a series of transformations of the spanning forests in four dimensions and then show a systematic way for decomposing the MHV sector of the CHY formula of double-trace EYM amplitudes. Along this line, the symmetric formula of double-trace MHV amplitudes is directly obtained by the MHV sector of CHY formula. We then prove that EYM amplitude with an arbitrary total number of negative-helicity particles (gravitons and gluons) has to vanish when the number of negative- (or positive-) helicity gluons is less than the number of traces.

Off-shell extended graphic rule and the expansion of Berends-Giele currents in Yang-Mills theory

Tree-level color-ordered Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes can be decomposed in terms of $(n-2)!$ bi-scalar (BS) amplitudes, whose expansion coefficients form a basis of Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators. By the help of the recursive expansion of Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes, the BCJ numerators are given by polynomial functions of Lorentz contractions which are conveniently described by graphic rule. In this work, we extend the expansion of YM amplitudes to off-shell level. We define different types of off-shell extended numerators that can be generated by graphs. By the use of these extended numerators, we propose a general decomposition formula of off-shell Berends-Giele currents in YM. This formula consists of three terms: (i). an effective current which is expanded as a combination of the Berends-Giele currents in BS theory (The expansion coefficients are one type of off-shell extended numerators) (ii). a term proportional to the total momentum of on-shell lines and (iii). a term expressed by the sum of lower point Berends-Giele currents in which some polarizations and momenta are replaced by vectors proportional to off-shell momenta appropriately. In the on-shell limit, the last two terms vanish while the decomposition of effective current precisely reproduces the decomposition of on-shell YM amplitudes with the the expected coefficients (BCJ numerators in DDM basis). We further symmetrize these coefficients such that the Lie symmetries are satisfied. These symmetric BCJ numerators simultaneously satisfy the relabeling property of external lines and the algebraic properties (antisymmetry and Jacobi identity).

A graphic approach to identities induced from multi-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes

Symmetries of Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes, together with the recursive expansions, induce nontrivial identities for pure Yang-Mills amplitudes. In the previous work \cite{Hou:2018bwm}, we have already proven that the identities induced from tree level single-trace EYM amplitudes can be precisely expanded in terms of BCJ relations. In this paper, we extend the discussions to those identities induced from all tree level \emph{multi-trace} EYM amplitudes. Particularly, we establish a refined graphic rule for multi-trace EYM amplitudes and then show that the induced identities can be fully decomposed in terms of BCJ relations.

Characterizing the solutions to scattering equations that support tree-level $\text{N}^{k}\text{MHV}$ gauge/gravity amplitudes

In this paper we define, independent of theories, two discriminant matrices involving a solution to the scattering equations in four dimensions, the ranks of which are used to divide the solution set into a disjoint union of subsets. We further demonstrate, {entirely within the Cachazo-He-Yuan formalism,} that each subset of solutions gives nonzero contribution to tree-level $\text{N}^{k}\text{MHV}$ gauge/gravity amplitudes only for a specific value of $k$. Thus the solutions can be characterized by the rank of their discriminant matrices, which in turn determines the value of $k$ of the $\text{N}^{k} \text{MHV}$ amplitudes a solution can support. As another application of the technique developed, we show analytically that in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, if all gluons have the same helicity, the tree-level single-trace amplitudes must vanish.

CHY formula and MHV amplitudes

In this paper, we study the relation between the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula and the maximal-helicity-violating (MHV) amplitudes of Yang-Mills and gravity in four dimensions. We prove that only one special rational solution of the scattering equations found by Weinzierl support the MHV amplitudes. Namely, localized at this solution, the integrated CHY formula reproduces the Parke-Taylor formula for Yang-Mills amplitudes as well as the Hodges formula for gravitational amplitudes. This is achieved by developing techniques, in a manifestly Möbius covariant formalism, to explicitly compute relevant reduced Pfaffians/determinants. We observe and prove two interesting properties (or identities), which facilitate the computations. We also check that all the other $(n-3)!-1$ solutions to the scattering equations do not support the MHV amplitudes, and prove analytically that this is indeed true for the other special rational solution proposed by Weinzierl, that actually supports the anti-MHV amplitudes.

Correspondence between Solutions of Scattering Equations and Scattering Amplitudes in Four Dimensions

In this talk, we review our recent work on direct evaluation of tree-level MHV amplitudes by Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula. We also investigate the correspondence between solutions to scattering equations and amplitudes in four dimensions along this line. By substituting the MHV solution of scattering equations into the integrated CHY formula, we explicitly calculate the tree-level MHV amplitudes for four dimensional Yang-Mills theory and gravity. These results naturally reproduce the Parke-Taylor and Hodges formulas. In addition, we derive a new compact formula for tree-level single-trace MHV amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, which is equivalent to the known Selivanov-Bern-De Freitas-Wong (SBDW) formula. Other solutions do not contribute to the MHV amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory, gravity and Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. We further investigate the correspondence between solutions of scattering equation and helicity configurations beyond MHV and proposed a method for characterizing solutions of scattering equations.

Direct Evaluation of $n$-point single-trace MHV amplitudes in 4d Einstein-Yang-Mills theory using the CHY Formalism

In this paper we extend our techniques, developed in a previous paper (Du, etc, JHEP 05(2016)086) for direct evaluation of arbitrary $n$-point tree-level MHV amplitudes in 4d Yang-Mills and gravity theory using the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formalism, to the 4d Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory. Any single-trace color-ordered $n$-point tree-level MHV amplitude in EYM theory, obtained by a direct evaluation of the CHY formula, is of an elegant factorized form of a Parke-Taylor factor and a Hodges determinant, much simpler and more compact than the existing formulas in the literature. We prove that our new expression is equivalent to the conjectured Selivanov-Bern-De Freitas-Wong (SBDW) formula, with the help of a new theorem showing that the SBDW generating function has a graph theory interpretation. Together with Ref. (Du, etc, JHEP 05(2016)086), we provide strong analytic evidence for hidden simplicity in quantum field theory.

Explicit BCJ numerators of nonlinear sigma model

In this paper, we investigate the color-kinematics duality in nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). We present explicit polynomial expressions for the kinematic numerators (BCJ numerators). The calculation is done separately in two parametrization schemes of the theory using Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relation inspired technique, both lead to polynomial numerators. We summarize the calculation in each case into a set of rules that generates BCJ numerators for all multilplicities. In Cayley parametrization we find the numerator is described by a particularly simple formula solely in terms of momentum kernel.

Note on off-shell relations in nonlinear sigma model

In this note, we investigate relations between tree-level off-shell currents in nonlinear sigma model. Under Cayley parametrization, all odd-point currents vanish. We propose and prove a generalized $U(1)$ identity for even-point currents. The off-shell $U(1)$ identity given in [1] is a special case of the generalized identity studied in this note. The on-shell limit of this identity is equivalent with the on-shell KK relation. Thus this relation provides the full off-shell correspondence of tree-level KK relation in nonlinear sigma model.

On single and double soft behaviors in NLSM

In this paper, we study the single and double soft behaviors of tree level off-shell currents and on-shell amplitudes in nonlinear sigma model(NLSM). We first propose and prove the leading soft behavior of the tree level currents with a single soft particle. In the on-shell limit, this single soft emission becomes the Adler's zero. Then we establish the leading and sub-leading soft behaviors of tree level currents with two adjacent soft particles. With a careful analysis of the on-shell limit, we obtain the double soft behaviors of on-shell amplitudes where the two soft particles are adjacent to each other. By applying Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) relation, we further obtain the leading and sub-leading behaviors of amplitudes with two nonadjacent soft particles.

Recursion in multiplet bases for tree-level MHV gluon amplitudes

We investigate the construction of tree-level MHV gluon amplitudes in multiplet bases using BCFW recursion. The multiplet basis decomposition can either be obtained by decomposing results derived in (for example) the DDM basis or by formulating the recursion directly in the multiplet basis. We focus on the latter approach and show how to efficiently deal with the color structure appearing in the recursion. For illustration, we also explicitly calculate the four-, five- and six-gluon amplitudes.

Dual-color decompositions at one-loop level in Yang-Mills theory

In this work, we extend the construction of dual color decomposition in Yang-Mills theory to one-loop level, i.e., we show how to write one-loop integrands in Yang-Mills theory to the dual DDM-form and the dual trace-form. In dual forms, integrands are decomposed in terms of color-ordered one-loop integrands for color scalar theory with proper dual color coefficients. In dual DDM decomposition, The dual color coefficients can be obtained directly from BCJ-form by applying Jacobi-like identities for kinematic factors. In dual trace decomposition, the dual trace factors can be obtained by imposing one-loop KK relations, reflection relation and their relation with the kinematic factors in dual DDM-form.

Note on Soft Graviton theorem by KLT Relation

Recently, new soft graviton theorem proposed by Cachazo and Strominger has inspired a lot of works. In this note, we use the KLT-formula to investigate the theorem. We have shown how the soft behavior of color ordered Yang-Mills amplitudes can be combined with KLT relation to give the soft behavior of gravity amplitudes. As a byproduct, we find two nontrivial identities of the KLT momentum kernel must hold.

Amplitude Relations in Non-linear Sigma Model

In this paper, we investigate tree-level scattering amplitude relations in $U(N)$ non-linear sigma model. We use Cayley parametrization. As was shown in the recent works [23,24] both on-shell amplitudes and off-shell currents with odd points have to vanish under Cayley parametrization. We prove the off-shell $U(1)$ identity and fundamental BCJ relation for even-point currents. By taking the on-shell limits of the off-shell relations, we show that the color-ordered tree amplitudes with even points satisfy $U(1)$-decoupling identity and fundamental BCJ relation, which have the same formations within Yang-Mills theory. We further state that all the on-shell general KK, BCJ relations as well as the minimal-basis expansion are also satisfied by color-ordered tree amplitudes. As a consequence of the relations among color-ordered amplitudes, the total $2m$-point tree amplitudes satisfy DDM form of color decomposition as well as KLT relation.

Note on Construction of Dual-trace Factor in Yang-Mills Theory

In this note we provide a new construction of BCJ dual-trace factor using the kinematic algebra proposed in arXiv:1105.2565 and arXiv:1212.6168. Different from the construction given in arXiv:1304.2978 based on the proposal of arXiv:1103.0312, the method used in this note exploits the adjoint representation of kinematic algebra and the use of inner product in dual space. The dual-trace factor defined in this way naturally satisfies cyclic symmetry condition but not KK-relation, just like the trace of U(N) Lie algebra satisfies cyclic symmetry condition, but not KK-relation. In other words the new construction naturally leads to formulation sharing more similarities with the color decomposition of Yang-Mills amplitude.

The Construction of Dual-trace Factor in Yang-Mills Theory

Recently, a BCJ dual of the color-ordered formula for Yang-Mills amplitude was proposed, where the dual-trace factor satisfies cyclic symmetry and KK-relation. In this paper, we present a systematic construction of the dual-trace factor based on its proposed relations to kinematic numerators in dual-DDM form. We show that the construction presented respects relabeling symmetry. In addition, we show that using relabeling symmetry as conditions, the same construction can be solved independently.

An algebraic approach to BCJ numerators

One important discovery in recent years is that the total amplitude of gauge theory can be written as BCJ form where kinematic numerators satisfy Jacobi identity. Although the existence of such kinematic numerators is no doubt, the simple and explicit construction is still an important problem. As a small step, in this note we provide an algebraic approach to construct these kinematic numerators. Under our Feynman-diagram-like construction, the Jacobi identity is manifestly satisfied. The corresponding color ordered amplitudes satisfy off-shell KK-relation and off-shell BCJ relation similar to the color ordered scalar theory. Using our construction, the dual DDM form is also established.

Note on Cyclic Sum and Combination Sum of Color-ordered Gluon Amplitudes

Continuing our previous study \cite{Du:2011se} of permutation sum of color ordered tree amplitudes of gluons, in this note, we prove the large-$z$ behavior of their cyclic sum and the combination of cyclic and permutation sums under BCFW deformation. Unlike the permutation sum, the study of cyclic sum and the combination of cyclic and permutation sums is much more difficult. By using the generalized Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) relation, we have proved the boundary behavior of cyclic sum with nonadjacent BCFW deformation. The proof of cyclic sum with adjacent BCFW deformation is a little bit simpler, where only Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) relations are needed. Finally we have presented a new observation for partial-ordered permutation sum and applied it to prove the boundary behavior of combination sum with cyclic and permutation.

On General BCJ Relation at One-loop Level in Yang-Mills Theory

BCJ relation reveals a dual between color structures and kinematic structure and can be used to reduce the number of independent color-ordered amplitudes at tree level. Refer to the loop-level in Yang-Mills theory, we investigate the similar BCJ relation in this paper. Four-point 1-loop example in N = 4 SYM can hint about the relation of integrands. Five-point example implies that the general formula can be proven by unitary- cut method. We will then prove a 'general' BCJ relation for 1-loop integrands by D-dimension unitary cut, which can be regarded as a non-trivial generalization of the (fundamental)BCJ relation given by Boels and Isermann in [arXiv:1109.5888 [hep-th]] and [arXiv:1110.4462 [hep-th]].

BCJ Relation of Color Scalar Theory and KLT Relation of Gauge Theory

We present a field theoretical proof of the conjectured KLT relation which states that the full tree-level scattering amplitude of gluons can be written as a product of color-ordered amplitude of gluons and color-ordered amplitude of scalars with only cubic vertex. To give a proof we establish the KK relation and BCJ relation of color-ordered scalar amplitude using BCFW recursion relation with nonzero boundary contributions. As a byproduct, an off-shell version of fundamental BCJ relation is proved, which plays an important role in our work.

On Primary Relations at Tree-level in String Theory and Field Theory

By the use of cyclic symmetry, KK relations and BCJ relations, one can reduce the number of independent $N$-point color-ordered tree amplitudes in gauge theory and string theory from $N!$ to $(N-3)!$. In this paper, we investigate these relations at tree-level in both string theory and field theory. We will show that there are two primary relations. All other relations can be generated by the primary relations. In string theory, the primary relations can be chosen as cyclic symmetry as well as either the fundamental KK relation or the fundamental BCJ relation. In field theory, the primary relations can only be chosen as cyclic symmetry and the fundamental BCJ relation. We will further show a kind of more general relation which can also be generated by the primary relations. The general formula of the explicit minimal-basis expansions for color-ordered open string tree amplitudes will be given and proven in this paper.

A Proof of the Explicit Minimal-basis Expansion of Tree Amplitudes in Gauge Field Theory

In last couple years, an important relation (BCJ relation) between color-ordered tree-level scattering amplitudes of gauge theory has inspired many studies. This relation implies that the minimal basis for the color-ordered tree-level amplitudes is $(n-3)!$ and other amplitudes can be expanded into a particular chosen basis. In this paper we will prove the conjectured explicit minimal basis expansion. For this purpose we will write down general BCJ relation of gauge theory by taking the field theory limit of BCJ relation in string theory. Then we prove these general BCJ relations using BCFW on-shell recursion relation. Using these general BCJ relations, we prove the conjectured explicit minimal-basis expansion of gauge theory tree amplitudes inductively.

On tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons

In this paper, we study the tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We first study the relations among the mixed amplitudes. With BCFW on-shell recursion relation, we will show the color-order reversed relation, $U(1)$-decoupling relation and KK relation hold for tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We then study the disk relation which expresses mixed amplitudes by pure gluon amplitudes. More specifically we will prove the disk relation for mixed amplitudes with gluons coupled to one graviton. Using the disk relation and the properties of pure gluon amplitudes, the color-order reversed relation, $U(1)$-decoupling relation and KK relation for mixed amplitudes can also be proved. Finally, we give some brief discussions on BCJ-like relation for mixed amplitudes.

Disk relations for tree amplitudes in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity

KLT relations on $S_2$ factorize closed string amplitudes into product of open string tree amplitudes. The field theory limits of KLT factorization relations hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. In this paper, we consider the field theory limits of relations on $D_2$. Though the relations on $D_2$ and KLT factorization relations hold on worldsheets with different topologies, we find the field theory limits of $D_2$ relations also hold in minimal coupling theory of gauge field and gravity. We use the $D_2$ relations to give three- and four-point tree amplitudes where gluons are minimally coupled to gravitons. We also give a discussion on general tree amplitudes for minimal coupling of gauge field and gravity. In general, any tree amplitude with $M$ gravitons in addition to $N$ gluons can be given by pure-gluon tree amplitudes with $N+2M$ legs.
