On periodic and compactly supported least energy solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity

We discuss the existence and non-existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity of the form: $-Δu=λu^p - u^q$ in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $ 0< q < p \leq 1$, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. The approach is based on the Nehari manifold method supplemented by a one-sided constraint given through the functional of the suitable Pohozaev identity. The limit value of the parameter $λ$, where the approach is applicable, corresponds to the existence of periodic in one variable and compactly supported in the other variables least energy solutions. This value is found through the extrem values of nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients and the so-called curve of the critical exponents of $p,q$. Important properties of the solutions are derived, such as that they are not trivial with respect to the periodic variable and do not coincide with compactly supported solutions on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$.

On prescribed energy saddle-point solutions to indefinite problems

A minimax variational principle for saddle-point solutions with prescribed energy levels is introduced. The approach is based on the development of the linking theorem to the energy level nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients. An application to indefinite elliptic Dirichlet problems is presented. Among the consequences, the existence of solutions with zero-energy levels is obtained.

Estimates on the spectral interval of validity of the anti-maximum principle

The anti-maximum principle for the homogeneous Dirichlet problem to $-Δ_p u = λ|u|^{p-2}u + f(x)$ with positive $f \in L^\infty(Ω)$ states the existence of a critical value $λ_f > λ_1$ such that any solution of this problem with $λ\in (λ_1, λ_f)$ is strictly negative. In this paper, we give a variational upper bound for $λ_f$ and study its properties. As an important supplementary result, we investigate the branch of ground state solutions of the considered boundary value problem in $(λ_1,λ_2)$.

On a generalized Collatz-Wielandt formula and finding saddle-node bifurcations

We introduce the nonlinear generalized Collatz-Wielandt formula $$ λ^*= \sup_{x\in Q}\min_{i:h_i(x) \neq 0} \frac{g_i(x)}{ h_i(x)}, ~~Q \subset \mathbb{R}^n,$$ and prove that its solution $(x^*,λ^*)$ yields the maximal saddle-node bifurcation for systems of equations of the form: $g(x)-λh(x)=0, ~~x \in Q$. Using this we introduce a simply verifiable criterion for the detection of saddle-node bifurcations of a given system of equations. We apply this criterion to prove the existence of the maximal saddle-node bifurcations for finite-difference approximations of nonlinear partial differential equations and for the system of power flow equations.

Flat solutions of some non-Lipschitz autonomous semilinear equations may be stable for $N\geq 3$

We prove that flat ground state solutions ($i.e.$ minimizing the energy and with gradient vanishing on the boundary of the domain) of the Dirichlet problem associated to some semilinear autonomous elliptic equations with a strong absorption term given by a non-Lipschitz function are unstable for dimensions $N=1,2$ and they can be stable for $N\geq 3$ for suitable values of the involved exponents.

On critical exponents curve for nonlinear elliptic equations in zero mass case

Semilinear elliptic equations of the form $-Δu =λ|u|^{p-2}u- |u|^{q-2}u$ in bounded and unbounded domains are considered. In the plane of exponents $p\times q$, the so-called critical exponents curve is introduced which separates domains with qualitatively distinctive properties of the considered equations and the associated parabolic problems. Necessary conditions for solvability to equations, stable and unstable stationary solutions, an existence of global solutions for parabolic problems in the whole space are obtained.

On extreme values of Nehari manifold method via nonlinear Rayleigh's quotient

We study applicability conditions of the Nehari manifold method for the equation of the form $ D_u T(u)-λD_u F(u)=0 $ in a Banach space $W$, where $λ$ is a real parameter. Our study is based on the development of the theory Rayleigh's quotient for nonlinear problems. It turns out that the extreme values of parameter $λ$ for the Nehari manifold method can be found through the critical values of a corresponding nonlinear generalized Rayleigh's quotient. In the main part of the paper, we provide some general results on this relationship. Applications are given to several types of nonlinear elliptic equations and systems of equations.

Computation of maximal turning points by a variational approach

We develop a new paradigm for finding bifurcations of solutions of nonlinear problems, which is based on the detection of extreme values of new type of variational functional associated with the considering problem. The variational functional is obtained constructively by the extended functional method which can be applied to a wide class of parametric problems including nonlinear partial differential equations and problems in non-variational form. The main feature of the approach is that it allows to consider the problem of finding bifurcations from another geometric point of view, namely using the extended variational functional. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a maximal turning point by the approach are proved. Based on these, an algorithm of the quasi-direction of steepest ascent is introduced. Simulation experiments are used to illustrate the behavior of the method and to discuss its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with the alternatives.

Hopf maximum principle violation for elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity

We consider elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity $$ -Δu = λ|u|^{β-1}u-|u|^{α-1}u$$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions; here $0<α<β<1$. We prove the existence of a weak nonnegative solution which does not satisfy the Hopf boundary maximum principle, provided that $λ$ is large enough and $n>2(1+α) (1+β)/(1-α)(1-β)$.
