Broadband control of group delay using the Brewster effect in metafilms

We propose and verify a method for controlling the frequency dependence of the group delay of electromagnetic waves over a broad frequency range using the Brewster effect in single-layer metamaterials with finite thickness, here referred to as metafilms. When the metafilm's reflectance vanishes regardless of the incident frequency, the group delay can be large near its resonance frequency while maintaining the transmittance close to unity regardless of the incident frequency. Furthermore, when several reflectionless metafilms are stacked together, the total group delay should be given as the sum of the individual group delays. In this study, we realize reflectionless metafilms by arranging the meta-atoms so that the Brewster effect occurs regardless of the incident frequency. We evaluate in numerical simulations and experiments the frequency dependence of the transmittance and of the group delay of a three-layer metamaterial composed of reflectionless metafilms with different resonance frequencies, and find that the total transmittance and group delay of this metamaterial agree respectively with the product of the transmittances and the sum of the group delays of the constituent metafilms.

Storage and release of electromagnetic waves using a Fabry-Perot resonator that includes an optically tunable metamirror

We evaluate the transient response of an optically tunable meta-atom composed of an electric inductor-capacitor resonator that is loaded with a piece of high-resistivity silicon and perform a proof-of-concept experiment to demonstrate the storage and release of electromagnetic waves using this meta-atom in the microwave region. The transient time of the meta-atom immediately after commencing laser light illumination of the silicon in the meta-atom is found to be inversely proportional to the incident laser power. The transmittance of the meta-atom at the resonance frequency increases to ten times that obtained without laser illumination at 5.2 ns after the start of laser illumination for a laser power of 1600 mW, a laser spot size of 2 mm $\times$ 1 mm, and a laser wavelength of 447 nm. In contrast, the transient time after turning the laser light off is dependent on the carrier lifetime of silicon and is measured to be several tens of microseconds. Based on the results of evaluation of the transient response of the meta-atom, we propose a method for the storage and release of electromagnetic waves using a Fabry-Perot resonator that includes the meta-atom as one of its mirrors. The electromagnetic wave that is stored in the Fabry-Perot resonator for a few tens of nanoseconds is then successfully released by illuminating the silicon in the meta-atom with the laser light. It is also possible to use this method in the higher frequency region because metamaterials with semiconductor elements can even be used as active metamaterials in the optical region as long as their bandgap energy is higher than the signal photon energy.

Design and analysis of frequency-independent reflectionless single-layer metafilms

We develop a theory for realizing frequency-independent, reflectionless, single-layer metafilms based on the Brewster effect. A metafilm designed based on the theory is numerically analyzed using a finite-difference time-domain method. The numerical analysis demonstrates that the reflectance of the metafilm vanishes independent of the frequency and that the metafilm behaves like an all-pass filter (with finite loss). An analysis based on an electrical circuit model of the reflectionless metafilm reveals that the energy of the suppressed reflection wave is not stored in the metafilm but is radiated to the transmission direction.

Brewster effect in metafilms composed of bi-anisotropic split-ring resonators

The Brewster effect is extended to single-layer metafilms. In contrast to bulk media, the Brewster effect in metafilms can be realized by tailoring the radiation pattern of a distribution of meta-atoms rather than the effective medium parameters. A metafilm composed of bi-anisotropic split-ring resonators is designed based on the theory, and its characteristics are numerically analyzed. The simulation demonstrates that there exists a condition for which the polarization of the reflected wave becomes independent of the incident polarization at a particular angle of incidence.

Suppression of narrow-band transparency in a metasurface induced by a strongly enhanced electric field

We realize a suppression of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) like transmission in a metasurface induced by a local electric field that is strongly enhanced based on two approaches: squeezing of electromagnetic energy in resonant metasurfaces and enhancement of electromagnetic energy density associated with a low group velocity. The EIT-like metasurface consists of a pair of radiatively coupled cut-wire resonators, and it can effect both field enhancement approaches simultaneously. The strongly enhanced local electric field generates an air discharge plasma at either of the gaps of the cut-wire resonators, which causes the EIT-like metasurface to change into two kinds of Lorentz type metasurfaces.

A linear-to-circular polarization converter with half transmission and half reflection using a single-layered metamaterial

A linear-to-circular polarization converter with half transmission and half reflection using a single-layered metamaterial is theoretically and numerically demonstrated. The unit cell of the metamaterial consists of two coupled split-ring resonators with identical dimensions. A theoretical analysis based on an electrical circuit model of the coupled split-ring resonators indicates that the linear-to-circular polarization converter is achieved when the magnetic coupling between the split-ring resonators is set to a certain strength. A finite-difference time-domain simulation reveals that the single-layered metamaterial behaves as the linear-to-circular polarization converter and that the polarization converter has the combined characteristics of a half mirror and a quarter-wave plate.

Electromagnetically induced transparency like transmission in a metamaterial composed of cut-wire pairs with indirect coupling

We theoretically and numerically investigate metamaterials composed of coupled resonators with indirect coupling. First, we theoretically analyze a mechanical model of coupled resonators with indirect coupling. The theoretical analysis shows that an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like phenomenon with a transparency bandwidth narrower than the resonance linewidths of the constitutive resonators can occur in the metamaterial with strong indirect coupling. We then numerically examine the characteristics of the metamaterial composed of coupled cut-wire pairs using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The FDTD simulation confirms that an EIT-like transparency phenomenon occurs in the metamaterial owing to indirect coupling. Finally, we compare the results of the theoretical and numerical analyses. The behavior of the EIT-like metamaterial is found to be well described by the mechanical model of the coupled resonators.

Observation of modulation instability in a nonlinear magnetoinductive waveguide

We report numerical and experimental investigations into modulation instability in a nonlinear magnetoinductive waveguide. By numerical simulation we find that modulation instability occurs in an electrical circuit model of a magnetoinductive waveguide with third-order nonlinearity. We fabricate the nonlinear magnetoinductive waveguide for microwaves using varactor-loaded split-ring resonators and observe the generation of modulation instability in the waveguide. The condition for generating modulation instability in the experiment roughly agrees with that in the numerical analysis.

Storage of electromagnetic waves in a metamaterial that mimics electromagnetically induced transparency

We propose a method for dynamically controlling the properties of a metamaterial that mimics electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by introducing varactor diodes to manipulate the structural symmetry of the metamaterial. Dynamic modulation of the EIT property enables the storage and retrieval of electromagnetic waves. We confirmed that the electromagnetic waves were stored and released, while maintaining the phase distribution in the propagating direction.

Efficient second harmonic generation in a metamaterial with two resonant modes coupled through two varactor diodes

We present an effective method to generate second harmonic (SH) waves using nonlinear metamaterial composed of coupled split ring resonators (CSRRs) with varactor (variable capacitance) diodes. The CSRR structure has two resonant modes: a symmetric mode that resonates at the fundamental frequency and an anti-symmetric mode that resonates at the SH frequency. Resonant fundamental waves in the symmetric mode generate resonant SH waves in the anti-symmetric mode. The double resonance contributes to effective SH radiation. In the experiment, we observe 19.6 dB enhancement in the SH radiation in comparison with the nonlinear metamaterial that resonates only for the fundamental waves.

Variable group delay in a metamaterial with field-gradient-induced transparency

We realize variable control of the group delay in an electromagnetically induced transparency-like metamaterial. Its unit cell is designed to have a bright mode and a dark mode. The coupling strength between these two modes is determined by the electromagnetic field gradient. In this metamaterial with field-gradient-induced transparency, the group delay at the transparency frequency can be varied by varying the incident angle of the electromagnetic plane waves. By tilting a single layer of the metamaterial, the group delay of a microwave pulse can be varied between 0.50 and 1.85 ns.

Electromagnetic response of a metamaterial with field-gradient-induced transparency

We investigate a dynamically controllable electromagnetically induced transparency-like metamaterial. The unit structure of the metamaterial consists of a low-quality-factor resonator and a high-quality-factor resonator. The field gradient of the incident electromagnetic wave in the transverse direction induces coupling between these two types of resonators and causes a transparency phenomenon. We present the simulation and experimental results for the dynamic control of the electromagnetic response.

Enhancement of second harmonic generation in a doubly resonant metamaterial

We investigate second harmonic (SH) generation in a doubly resonant metamaterial. We show that SH generation can be enhanced when the resonant condition is satisfied for the SH frequency as well as for the fundamental frequency. A unit cell of the doubly resonant metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators, one of which resonates at the fundamental frequency, whereas the other resonates around the SH frequency. We observe that the SH generation in the doubly resonant metamaterial is 4.6 times as large as that in a singly resonant metamaterial.
