CFT duals of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity

We present a class of dS/CFT correspondence between two-dimensional CFTs and three-dimensional de Sitter spaces. We argue that such a CFT includes an SU$(2)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -2$, which corresponds to the classical gravity limit. We can generalize this dS/CFT by considering the SU$(N)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -N$, dual to the higher-spin gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We confirm that under this proposed duality the classical partition function in the gravity side can be reproduced from CFT calculations. We also point out a duality relation known in higher-spin holography provides further evidence. Moreover, we analyze two-point functions and entanglement entropy in our dS/CFT correspondence. Possible spectrum and quantum corrections in the gravity theory are discussed.

FZZ-triality and large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory

We examine dualities of two dimensional conformal field theories by applying the methods developed in previous works. We first derive the duality between $SL(2|1)_k/(SL(2)_k \otimes U(1))$ coset and Witten's cigar model or sine-Liouville theory. The latter two models are Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ-)dual to each other, hence the relation of the three models is named FZZ-triality. These results are used to study correlator correspondences between large $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Liouville theory and a coset of the form $Y(k_1,k_2)/SL(2)_{k_1 +k_2}$, where $Y(k_1 , k_2)$ consists of two $SL(2|1)_{k_i}$ and free bosons or equivalently two $U(1)$ cosets of $D(2,1;k_i -1)$ at level one. These correspondences are a main result of this paper. The FZZ-triality acts as a seed of the correspondence, which in particular implies a hidden $SL(2)_{k'}$ in $SL(2|1)_k$ or $D(2,1 ; k-1)_1$. The relation of levels is $k' -1 = 1/(k-1)$. We also construct boundary actions in sine-Liouville theory as another use of the FZZ-triality. Furthermore, we generalize the FZZ-triality to the case with $SL(n|1)_k/(SL(n)_k \otimes U(1))$ for arbitrary $n>2$.

Three-dimensional de Sitter holography and bulk correlators at late time

We propose an explicitly calculable example of holography on 3-dimensional de Sitter space by providing a prescription to analytic continue a higher-spin holography on 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Applying the de Sitter holography, we explicitly compute bulk correlation functions on 3-dimensional de Sitter space at late time in a higher-spin gravity. These expressions are consistent with recent analysis based on bulk Feynman diagrams. Our explicit computations reveal how holographic computations could provide fruitful information.

Holography in de Sitter Space via Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of known holography for coset CFTs. We also present a higher spin gravity extension of our duality.

Correspondences among CFTs with different W-algebra symmetry

W-algebras are constructed via quantum Hamiltonian reduction associated with a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and an $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-embedding into $\mathfrak{g}$. We derive correspondences among correlation functions of theories having different W-algebras as symmetry algebras. These W-algebras are associated to the same $\mathfrak{g}$ but distinct $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-embeddings. For this purpose, we first explore different free field realizations of W-algebras and then generalize previous works on the path integral derivation of correspondences of correlation functions. For $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(3)$, there is only one non-standard (non-regular) W-algebra known as the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra. We examine its free field realizations and derive correlator correspondences involving the WZNW theory of $\mathfrak{sl}(3)$, the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra and the principal $W_3$-algebra. There are three non-regular W-algebras associated to $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(4)$. We show that the methods developed for $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}(3)$ can be applied straightforwardly. We briefly comment on extensions of our techniques to general $\mathfrak{g}$.

Rectangular W-algebras of types $so(M)$ and $sp(2M)$ and dual coset CFTs

We examine rectangular W-algebras with $so(M)$ or $sp(2M)$ symmetry, which can be realized as the asymptotic symmetry of higher spin gravities with restricted matrix extensions. We compute the central charges of the algebras and the levels of $so(M)$ or $sp(2M)$ affine subalgebras by applying the Hamiltonian reductions of $so$ or $sp$ type Lie algebras. For simple cases with generators of spin up to two, we obtain their operator product expansions by requiring the associativity. We further claim that the W-algebras can be realized as the symmetry algebras of dual coset CFTs and provide several strong supports. The analysis can be regarded as a check of extended higher spin holographies including full quantum corrections. We also extend the analysis by introducing $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry.

The masses of higher spin fields on AdS_4 and conformal perturbation theory

We study the breaking of gauge symmetry for higher spin theory on AdS_4 dual to the 3d critical O(N) vector model. It was argued that the breaking is due to the change of boundary condition for a scalar field through a loop effect and the Goldstone modes are bound states of a scalar field and higher spin field. The masses of higher spin fields were obtained from the anomalous dimensions of dual currents at the leading order in 1/N, and we reproduce them from the O(N) vector model in the conformal perturbation theory. The anomalous dimensions can be computed from the bulk theory using Witten diagrams, and we show that the bulk computation reduces to the boundary one in the conformal perturbation theory. With this fact our computation provides an additional support for the bulk interpretation.

Correspondences between WZNW models and CFTs with W-algebra symmetry

We study theories with W-algebra symmetries and their relation to WZNW models on (super-)groups. Correlation functions of the WZNW models are expressed in terms of correlators of CFTs with W-algebra symmetry. The symmetries of the theories involved in these correspondences are related by the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction of Lie algebras to W-algebras. The W-algebras considered in this paper are the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra for sl(3) and the quasi-superconformal algebra for generic sl(N|M). The quantum W-algebras obtained from affine sl(N) are constructed using embeddings of sl(2) into sl(N), and these can in turn be characterized by partitions of N. The above cases correspond to \underline{N+2} = \underline{2} + N \underline{1} and its supergroup extension. Finally, sl(2N) and the correspondence corresponding to \underline{2N} = N \underline{2} is also analyzed.

Higgs phenomenon for higher spin fields on AdS_3

In a previous work, a marginal deformation of 2d coset type model with N=3 superconformal symmetry was studied, and it was interpreted as a change of boundary conditions for bulk fields in the dual higher spin theory. The deformation breaks generic higher spin gauge symmetry, and the generated mass of a spin 2 field was computed. The deformation might be related to the introduction of finite string tension in a superstring theory. In this paper, we extend the analysis and compute the masses of generic higher spin fields at the leading order of 1/c (c is the CFT central charge) but at the full order of the deformation parameter. We find that the masses are not generated for so(3)_R singlet higher spin fields at this order and the spectrum is the Regge-like one for so(3)_R triplet higher spin-charged fields.

Higher spin AdS_3 holography and superstring theory

It has been believed for a long time that the tensionless limit of superstring theory can be described by a higher spin gauge theory. Recently, a concrete realization of this idea was proposed via 3d Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis (ABJ) theory with the help of holographic duality. In this note we review our work on finding a similar relation involving 2d coset type models. We start by proposing and examining holographic dualities between 3d higher spin gauge theories with matrix valued fields and the large N limit of 2d coset type models. After that we discuss possible relations to superstring theory with emphasis on the role of the matrix form of the higher spin fields and the extended supersymmetry.

Marginal deformations and the Higgs phenomenon in higher spin AdS_3 holography

Recently, a 2d coset model with N=3 superconformal symmetry was proposed to be holographic dual to a higher spin supergravity on AdS_3 and the relation to superstring theory was discussed. However, away from the tensionless limit, there is no higher spin symmetry and the higher spin states are massive. In this paper, we examine the deformations of the coset model which preserve N=3 superconformal symmetry, but break generic higher spin symmetry. We focus on double-trace type deformations which are dual to changes of boundary conditions for the bulk matter fields. In the bulk theory, the symmetry breaking will generate mass for the higher spin fields. As a concrete example, we compute the Higgs mass of a spin 2 field both from the bulk and the boundary theory.

Higher spin AdS_3 holography with extended supersymmetry

We propose a holographic duality between a higher spin AdS_3 gravity with so(p) extended supersymmetry and a large N limit of a 2-dimensional Grassmannian-like model with a specific critical level k=N and a non-diagonal modular invariant. As evidence, we show the match of one-loop partition functions. Moreover, we construct symmetry generators of the coset model for low spins which are dual to gauge fields in the supergravity. Further, we discuss a possible relation to superstring theory by noticing an N=3 supersymmetry of critical level model at finite k,N. In particular, we examine BPS states and marginal deformations. Inspired by the supergravity side, we also propose and test another large N CFT dual obtained as a Z_2 automorphism truncation of a similar coset model, but at a non-critical level.

Unitary W-algebras and three-dimensional higher spin gravities with spin one symmetry

We investigate whether there are unitary families of W-algebras with spin one fields in the natural example of the Feigin-Semikhatov W^(2)_n-algebra. This algebra is conjecturally a quantum Hamiltonian reduction corresponding to a non-principal nilpotent element. We conjecture that this algebra admits a unitary real form for even n. Our main result is that this conjecture is consistent with the known part of the operator product algebra, and especially it is true for n=2 and n=4. Moreover, we find certain ranges of allowed levels where a positive definite inner product is possible. We also find a unitary conformal field theory for every even n at the special level k+n=(n+1)/(n-1). At these points, the W^(2)_n-algebra is nothing but a compactified free boson. This family of W-algebras admits an 't Hooft limit that is similar to the original minimal model 't Hooft limit. Further, in the case of n=4, we reproduce the algebra from the higher spin gravity point of view. In general, gravity computations allow us to reproduce some leading coefficients of the operator product.

Conical defects and N=2 higher spin holography

We study conical geometry with the maximal number of fermionic symmetry in the higher spin supergravity described by sl(N+1|N) + sl(N+1|N) Chern-Simons gauge theory. It was proposed that a three dimensional N=2 higher spin supergravity is holographically dual to the N=(2,2) CP^N Kazama-Suzuki model. Based one the duality, we find a map between conical geometries and primary states in the dual CFT. In particular, we construct geometric solutions corresponding to primary states in the RR-sector. The proposal is checked by the comparison of a few charges and by the relation between null vectors and higher spin symmetry.

Extended higher spin holography and Grassmannian models

We propose holographic dualities between higher spin gravity theories extended with Chan-Paton factor on AdS_3 and a large N limit of two dimensional Grassmannian models with and without supersymmetry. These proposals are natural extensions of the duality without Chan-Paton factor, and the extensions are motivated by a higher dimensional version of the duality, which implies a possible relation to superstring theory via ABJ theory. As evidence for the proposals, we show that the free limit of the Grassmannian models have the higher spin symmetry expected from the dual gravity theory. Furthermore, we construct currents in the 't Hooft limit of the supersymmetric Grassmannian model and compare them with the currents from the bulk theory. One-loop partition function of the supergravity theory is reproduced by the 't Hooft limit of the Grassmannian model after decoupling a gauge sector.

N=1 supersymmetric higher spin holography on AdS_3

We propose a duality between a higher spin N=1 supergravity on AdS_3 and a large N limit of a family of N=(1,1) superconformal field theories. The gravity theory is an N=1 truncation of the N=2 supergravity found by Prokushkin and Vasiliev, and the dual conformal field theory is defined by a supersymmetric coset model. We check this conjecture by comparing one loop partition functions and find agreement. Moreover, we study the symmetry of the dual coset model and in particular compute fields of the coset algebra of dimension 3/2, 2, 2 and 5/2 explicitely.

Three point functions in higher spin AdS_3 supergravity

In a previous work we have proposed that the Prokushkin-Vasiliev higher spin N=2 supergravity on AdS_3 is dual to a large N limit of the N=(2,2) CP^N Kazama-Suzuki model. There is now strong evidence supporting this proposal based on symmetry and spectrum comparison. In this paper we will give further evidence for the duality by studying correlation functions. We compute boundary three point functions with two fermionic operators and one higher spin bosonic current in terms of the bulk supergravity theory. Then we compare with the results in the dual CFT, where the supersymmetry of the theory turns out to be very helpful. In particular we use it to confirm results conjectured in the bosonic case. Moreover, correlators with a fermionic current can be obtained via supersymmetry.

Higher spin AdS_3 supergravity and its dual CFT

Vasiliev's higher spin supergravity theory on three dimensional anti-de Sitter space is studied and, in particular, the partition function is computed at one loop level. The dual conformal field theory is proposed to be the N=(2,2) CP^N Kazama-Suzuki model in two dimensions. The proposal is based on symmetry considerations and comparison of the bulk partition function with the conformal field theory. Our findings suggest that the theory is strong-weak self-dual.

Supergroup - extended super Liouville correspondence

We derive a relation between correlation functions of supergroup WZNW models and conformal field theories with extended superconformal symmetry. The supergroups considered have a bosonic subgroup of the form SL(2) x A for some Lie group A. The corresponding conformal field theory is a super Liouville field theory coupled with the WZNW model on A. An example is a correspondence between the PSU(1,1|2) WZNW model and small N=4 super Liouville field theory. The OSP(n|2) WZNW model is related to a superconformal field theory with SO(n) extended superconformal symmetry of the Knizhnik-Bershadsky type. In the case n=4 this is simply the large N=(4,4) superconformal symmetry. Besides these two examples we make a general derivation encompassing the WZNW models on supergroups SL(2|n), D(2,1;α), OSP(4|2n), F(4) and G(3) and their relation to models with extended superconformal algebras as symmetry.

The FZZ duality with boundary

The Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ) duality relates Witten's cigar model to sine-Liouville theory. This duality was proven in the path integral formulation and extended to the case of higher genus closed Riemann surfaces by Schomerus and one of the authors. In this note we further extend the duality to the case with boundary. Specifically, we relate D1-branes in the cigar model to D2-branes in the sine-Liouville theory. In particular, the boundary action for D2-branes in the sine-Liouville theory is constructed. We also consider the fermionic version of the FZZ duality. This duality was proven as a mirror symmetry by Hori and Kapustin, but we give an alternative proof in the path integral formulation which directly relates correlation functions. Also here the case with boundary is investigated and the results are consistent with those for branes in N=2 super Liouville field theory obtained by Hosomichi.

Branes in the OSP(1|2) WZNW model

The boundary OSP(1|2) WZNW model possesses two types of branes, which are localized on supersymmetric Euclidean AdS$_2$ and on two-dimensional superspheres. We compute the coupling of closed strings to these branes with two different methods. The first one uses factorization constraints and the other one a correspondence to boundary N=1 super-Liouville field theory, which we proof with path integral techniques. We check that the results obey the Cardy condition and reproduce the semi-classical computations. For the check we also compute the spectral density of open strings that are attached to the non-compact branes.

The FZZ-Duality Conjecture - A Proof

We prove that the cigar conformal field theory is dual to the Sine-Liouville model, as conjectured originally by Fateev, Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov. Since both models possess the same chiral algebra, our task is to show that correlations of all tachyon vertex operators agree. We accomplish this goal through an off-critical version of the geometric Langlands duality for sl(2). More explicitly, we combine the well-known self-duality of Liouville theory with an intriguing correspondence between the cigar and Liouville field theory. The latter is derived through a path integral treatment. After a very detailed discussion of genus zero amplitudes, we extend the duality to arbitrary closed surfaces.

D-instantons and Closed String Tachyons in Misner Space

We investigate closed string tachyon condensation in Misner space, a toy model for big bang universe. In Misner space, we are able to condense tachyonic modes of closed strings in the twisted sectors, which is supposed to remove the big bang singularity. In order to examine this, we utilize D-instanton as a probe. First, we study general properties of D-instanton by constructing boundary state and effective action. Then, resorting to these, we are able to show that tachyon condensation actually deforms the geometry such that the singularity becomes milder.

D-branes in a Big Bang/Big Crunch Universe: Nappi-Witten Gauged WZW Model

We study D-branes in the Nappi-Witten model, which is a gauged WZW model based on (SL(2,R) x SU(2)) / (U(1) x U(1)). The model describes a four dimensional space-time consisting of cosmological regions with big bang/big crunch singularities and static regions with closed time-like curves. The aim of this paper is to investigate by D-brane probes whether there are pathologies associated with the cosmological singularities and the closed time-like curves. We first classify D-branes in a group theoretical way, and then examine DBI actions for effective theories on the D-branes. In particular, we show that D-brane metric from the DBI action does not include singularities, and wave functions on the D-branes are well behaved even in the presence of closed time-like curves.

Can branes travel beyond CTC horizon in Godel Universe?

Godel universe in M-theory is a supersymmetric and homogeneous background with rotation and four-form magnetic flux. It is known that, as seen in inertial frame of co-moving observer, all geodesics with zero orbital angular momentum orbit inside `surface of light velocity' (CTC horizon). To learn if other probes can travel beyond the CTC horizon, we study dynamics of M-graviton and, in particular, M2-brane, whose motion is affected by Lorentz force exerted by the four-form magnetic flux and by nonzero orbital angular momentum. Classically, we find that both probes gyrate closed orbits, but diameter and center of gyration depends on sign and magnitude of probe's energy, charge and orbital angular momentum. For M2-brane, orbits in general travel outside the CTC horizon. Quantum-mechanically, we find that wave function and excitation energy levels are all self-similar. We draw analogy of probe's dynamics with Landau problem for charged particle in magnetic field.

Boundary States of D-branes in AdS_3 Based on Discrete Series

We study D-branes in the Lorentzian AdS_3 background from the viewpoint of boundary states, emphasizing the role of open-closed duality in string theory. Employing the world sheet with Lorentzian signature, we construct the Cardy states with the discrete series. We show that they are compatible with (1) unitarity and normalizability, and (2) the spectral flow symmetry, in the open string spectrum. We also discuss their brane interpretation. We further show that in the case of superstrings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4, our Cardy states yield an infinite number of physical BPS states in the open string channel, on which the spectral flows act consistently.

Crosscap States for Orientifolds of Euclidean AdS_3

Crosscap states for orientifolds of Euclidean AdS_3 are constructed. We show that our crosscap states describe the same orientifolds which were obtained by the classical analysis. The spectral density of open strings in the system with orientifold can be read from the M"obius strip amplitudes and it is compared to that of the open strings stretched between branes and their mirrors. We also compute the Klein bottle amplitudes.

Superstring Vacua of 4-dimensional PP-Waves with Enhanced Supersymmetry

We study the superstring vacua constructed from the conformal field theories of the type H_4 x M, where H_4 denotes the super Nappi-Witten model (super WZW model on the 4-dimensional Heisenberg group H_4) and M denotes an arbitrary N=2 rational superconformal field theory with c=9. We define (type II) superstring vacua with 8 supercharges, which are twice as many as those on the backgrounds of H_4 x CY_3. We explicitly construct as physical vertices the space-time SUSY algebra that is a natural extension of H_4 Lie algebra. The spectrum of physical states is classified into two sectors: (1) strings freely propagating along the transverse plane of pp-wave geometry and possessing the integral U(1)_R-charges in M sector, and (2) strings that do not freely propagate along the transverse plane and possess the fractional U(1)_R-charges in M. The former behaves like the string excitations in the usual Calabi-Yau compactification, but the latter defines new sectors without changing the physics in ``bulk'' space. We also analyze the thermal partition functions of these systems, emphasizing the similarity to the DLCQ string theory. As a byproduct we prove the supersymmetric cancellation of conformal blocks in an arbitrary unitary N=2 SCFT of c=12 with the suitable GSO projection.

Superstrings on PP-Wave Backgrounds and Symmetric Orbifolds

We study the superstring theory on pp-wave background with NSNS-flux that is realized as the Penrose limit of AdS_3 x S^3 x M^4, where M^4 is T^4 or T^4/Z_2(~ K3). Quantizing this system in the covariant gauge, we explicitly construct the space-time supersymmetry algebra and the complete set of DDF operators. We analyse the spectrum of physical states by using the spectrally flowed representations of current algebra. This spectrum is classified by the ``short string sectors'' and the ``long string sectors'' as in AdS_3 string theory. The states of the latter propagate freely along the transverse plane of pp-wave background, but the states of the former do not. We compare the short string spectrum with the BPS and almost BPS states which have large R-charges in the symmetric orbifold conformal theory, which is known as the candidate of dual theory of superstrings on AdS_3 x S^3 x M^4. We show that every short string states can be embedded successfully in the single particle Hilbert space of symmetric orbifold conformal theory.
