Dimerization tendencies of the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet: A functional renormalization group perspective

We investigate the ground state properties of the spin-$1/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet using pseudofermion functional renormalization group techniques. The first part of our analysis is based on an enhanced parton mean-field approach which takes into account fluctuation effects from renormalized vertex functions. Our implementation of this technique extends earlier approaches and resolves technical difficulties associated with a diagrammatic overcounting. Using various parton ansätze for quantum spin liquids, dimerized and nematic states our results indicate a tendency for lattice symmetry breaking in the ground state. While overall quantum spin liquids seem unfavorable in this system, the recently proposed monopole state still shows the strongest support among all spin liquid ansätze that we have tested, which is further confirmed by our complementary variational Monte Carlo calculations. In the second part of our investigation, we probe lattice symmetry breaking more directly by applying the pseudofermion functional renormalization group to perturbed systems. Our results from this technique confirm that the system's ground state either exhibits broken $C_3$ rotation symmetry, or a combination of inversion and $C_3$ symmetry breaking.

Multiloop functional renormalization group approach to quantum spin systems

Renormalization group methods are well-established tools for the (numerical) investigation of the low-energy properties of correlated quantum many-body systems, allowing to capture their scale-dependent nature. The functional renormalization group (FRG) allows to continuously evolve a microscopic model action to an effective low-energy action as a function of decreasing energy scales via an exact functional flow equation, which is then approximated by some truncation scheme to facilitate computation. Here, we report on our transcription of a recently developed multiloop truncation approach for electronic FRG calculations to the pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) for interacting quantum spin systems. We discuss in detail the conceptual intricacies of the flow equations generated by the multiloop truncation, as well as essential refinements to the integration scheme for the resulting integro-differential equations. To benchmark our approach we analyze antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on the pyrochlore, simple cubic and face-centered cubic lattice, discussing the convergence of physical observables for higher-loop calculations and comparing with existing results where available. Combined, these methodological refinements systematically improve the pf-FRG approach to one of the numerical tools of choice when exploring frustrated quantum magnetism in higher spatial dimensions.

Comment on "$Z_{2}$ spin liquid phase on the kagome lattice: a new saddle point", by Tao Li [arXiv:1601.02165 (2016)]

In a recent paper [arXiv:1601.02165], Tao Li claimed that a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, obtained using projected Gutzwiller fermionic wave functions, can be stabilized in the Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. We perform very accurate variational calculations and confirm with unprecedented accuracy the fact, that the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid is a local energy minimum that goes away with system size, thus reaffirming the scenario of a gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid ground state.

Intertwined nematic orders in a frustrated ferromagnet

We investigate the quantum phases of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and $J_3$ interactions. Using the pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group technique, we find an intermediate paramagnetic phase located between classically ordered ferromagnetic, stripy antiferromagnetic, and incommensurate spiral phases. We observe that quantum fluctuations lead to significant shifts of the spiral pitch angles compared to the classical limit. By computing the response of the system with respect to various spin rotation and lattice symmetry-breaking perturbations, we identify a complex interplay between different nematic spin states in the paramagnetic phase. While retaining time-reversal invariance, these phases either break spin-rotation symmetry, lattice-rotation symmetry, or a combination of both. We therefore propose the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice as a paradigmatic example where different intimately connected types of nematic orders emerge in the same model.

Spin liquid nature in the Heisenberg $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ triangular antiferromagnet

We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in the presence of nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic couplings. Motivated by recent findings from density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) claiming the existence of a gapped spin liquid with signatures of spontaneously broken lattice point group symmetry [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403 (2015)], we employ the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) approach to analyze the model from an alternative perspective that considers both magnetically ordered and paramagnetic trial states. We find a quantum paramagnet in the regime $0.08\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim 0.16$, framed by $120^{\circ}$ coplanar (stripe collinear) antiferromagnetic order for smaller (larger) $J_2/J_1$. By considering the optimization of spin-liquid wave functions of a different gauge group and lattice point group content as derived from Abrikosov mean-field theory, we obtain the gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid as the energetically most preferable state in comparison to all symmetric or nematic gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquids so far advocated by DMRG. Moreover, by the application of few Lanczos iterations, we find the energy to be the same as the DMRG result within error-bars. To further resolve the intriguing disagreement between VMC and DMRG, we complement our methodological approach by the pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) to compare the spin structure factors for the paramagnetic regime calculated by VMC, DMRG, and PFFRG. This model promises to be an ideal test-bed for future numerical refinements in tracking the long-range correlations in frustrated magnets.

Paramagnetism in the kagome compounds (Zn,Mg,Cd)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$

Frustrated magnetism on the kagome lattice has been a fertile ground for rich and fascinating physics, ranging from experimental evidence of a spin liquid to theoretical predictions of exotic superconductivity. Among experimentally realized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome magnets, herbertsmithite, kapellasite, and haydeeite [(Zn,Mg)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$] are all well described by a three-parameter Heisenberg model, but they exhibit distinctly different physics. We address the problem using a pseudofermion functional renormalization-group approach and analyze the low-energy physics in the experimentally accessible parameter range. Our analysis places kapellasite and haydeeite near the boundaries between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, implying that slight modifications could dramatically affect their magnetic properties. Inspired by this, we perform \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations of (Zn,Mg,Cd)Cu$_{3}$ (OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ at various pressures. Our results suggest that by varying pressure and composition one can traverse a paramagnetic regime between different magnetically ordered phases.

Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice

We report variational Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice in the presence of both nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic superexchange couplings. Our approach is based upon Gutzwiller projected fermionic states that represent a flexible tool to describe quantum spin liquids with different properties (e.g., gapless and gapped). We show that, on finite clusters, a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid can be stabilized in the presence of a finite $J_2$ superexchange, with a substantial energy gain with respect to the gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid. However, this energy gain vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, implying that, at least within this approach, the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid remains stable in a relatively large region of the phase diagram. For $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.3$, we find that a magnetically ordered state with ${\bf q}={\bf 0}$ overcomes the magnetically disordered wave functions, suggesting the end of the putative gapless spin-liquid phase.

Lanczos steps to improve variational wave functions

Gutzwiller-projected fermionic states can be efficiently implemented within quantum Monte Carlo calculations to define extremely accurate variational wave functions for Heisenberg models on frustrated two-dimensional lattices, not only for the ground state but also for low-energy excitations. The application of few Lanczos steps on top of these states further improves their accuracy, allowing calculations on large clusters. In addition, by computing both the energy and its variance, it is possible to obtain reliable estimations of exact results. Here, we report the cases of the frustrated Heisenberg models on square and Kagome lattices.

Vanishing spin gap in a competing spin-liquid phase in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We provide strong numerical evidence, using improved variational wave functions, for a ground state with vanishing spin gap in the spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Starting from the algebraic $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state proposed by Y. Ran $et al.$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. $98$, $117205$ ($2007$)] and iteratively applying a few Lanczos steps, we compute the lowest $S=2$ excitation constructed by exciting spinons close to the Dirac nodes. Our results are compatible with a vanishing spin gap in the thermodynamic limit and in consonance with a power-law decay of long distance spin-spin correlations in real space. The competition with a gapped (topological) spin liquid is discussed.

Gapless spin-liquid phase in the kagome spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We study the energy and the static spin structure factor of the ground state of the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model on the kagome lattice. By the iterative application of a few Lanczos steps on accurate projected fermionic wave functions and the Green's function Monte Carlo technique, we find that a gapless (algebraic) U(1) Dirac spin liquid is competitive with previously proposed gapped (topological) Z2 spin liquids. By performing a finite-size extrapolation of the ground-state energy, we obtain an energy per site E/J=-0.4365(2), which is equal, within three error bars, to the estimates given by the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Our estimate is obtained for a translationally invariant system, and, therefore, does not suffer from boundary effects, like in DMRG. Moreover, on finite toric clusters at the pure variational level, our energies are lower compared to those from DMRG calculations.

Quantum-statistics-induced flow patterns in driven ideal Fermi gases

While classical or quantum interacting liquids become turbulent under sufficiently strong driving, it is not obvious what flow pattern an ideal quantum gas develops under similar conditions. Unlike classical noninteracting particles which exhibit rather trivial flow, ideal fermions have to satisfy the exclusion principle, which acts as a form of collective repulsion. We thus study the flow of an ideal Fermi gas as it is driven out of a narrow orifice of width comparable to the Fermi wavelength, employing both a microcanonical approach to transport, and solving a Lindblad equation for Markovian driving leads. Both methods are in good agreement and predict an outflowing current density with a complex microscopic pattern of vorticity in the steady state. Applying a bias of the order of the chemical potential results in a short-range correlated antiferromagnetic vorticity pattern, corresponding to local moments of the order of a tenth of a magneton, $e\hbar/2m$, if the fermions are charged. The latter may be detectable by magnetosensitive spectroscopy in strongly driven cold gases (atoms) or clean electronic nanostructures (electrons).

Valence-bond crystals in the kagome spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet: a symmetry classification and projected wave function study

In this paper, we do a complete classification of valence-bond crystals (VBCs) on the kagome lattice based on general arguments of symmetry only and thus identify many new VBCs for different unit cell sizes. For the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we study the relative energetics of competing gapless spin liquids (SLs) and VBC phases within the class of Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions using variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we conclusively show that the U(1) Dirac SL is remarkably stable towards dimerizing into all 6-, 12- and 36-site unit cell VBCs. This stability is also preserved on addition of a next-nearest-neighbor super-exchange coupling of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic (FM) type. However, we find that a 36-site unit cell VBC is stabilized on addition of a very small next-nearest-neighbor FM super-exchange coupling, i.e. |J2|~0.045, and this VBC is the same in terms of space-group symmetry as that obtained in an effective quantum dimer model study. It breaks reflection symmetry, has a nontrivial flux pattern and is a strong dimerization of the uniform RVB SL.

Projected wave function study of Z2 spin liquids on the kagome lattice for the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Motivated by recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations [Yan, Huse, and White, Science 332, 1173 (2011)], which claimed that the ground state of the nearest-neighbor spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice geometry is a fully gapped spin liquid with numerical signatures of Z2 gauge structure, and a further theoretical work [Lu, Ran, and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 83, 224413 (2011)], which gave a classification of all Schwinger-fermion mean-field fully symmetric Z2 spin liquids on the kagome lattice, we have thoroughly studied Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions by using quantum variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. In particular, we investigated the energetics of all Z2 candidates (gapped and gapless) that lie in the neighborhood of the energetically competitive U(1) gapless spin liquids. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we were able to conclusively show that the U(1) Dirac state is remarkably stable with respect to all Z2 spin liquids in its neighborhood, and in particular for opening a gap toward the so-called Z2[0,π]β state, which was conjectured to describe the ground state obtained by the DMRG method. Finally, we also considered the addition of a small second nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic type, and obtained similar results, namely, a U(1) Dirac spin-liquid ground state.

Valence-bond crystal in the extended kagome spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet: A variational Monte Carlo approach

The highly-frustrated spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor exchange interactions is revisited by using an extended variational space of projected wave functions that are optimized with state-of-the-art methods. Competition between modulated valence-bond crystals (VBCs) proposed in the literature and the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) is investigated. We find that the addition of a {\it small} ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $|J_2|>0.09 J_1$ leads to stabilization of a 36-site unit cell VBC, although the DSL remains a local minimum of the variational parameter landscape. This implies that the VBC is not trivially connected to the DSL: instead it possesses a non-trivial flux pattern and large dimerization.
