Dynamics of two coupled semiconductor spin qubits in a noisy environment

We theoretically consider the temporal dynamics of two coupled spin qubits (e.g., semiconductor quantum dots) driven by the inter-qubit spin-spin coupling. The presence of environmental noise (e.g., charge traps, nuclear spins, random magnetic impurities) is accounted for by including random magnetic field and random inter-qubit coupling terms in the Hamiltonian. Both Heisenberg coupling and Ising coupling between the spin qubits are considered, corresponding respectively to exchange and capacitive gates as appropriate for single spin and singlet-triplet semiconductor qubit systems, respectively. Both exchange (Heisenberg) and capacitive (Ising) coupling situations can be solved numerically exactly even in the presence of noise, leading to the key findings that (i) the steady-state return probability to the initial state remains close to unity in the presence of strong noise for many, but not all, starting spin configurations, and (ii) the return probability as a function of time is oscillatory with a characteristic noise-controlled decay toward the steady-state value. We also provide results for the magnetization dynamics of the coupled two-qubit system. Our predicted dynamics can be directly tested in the already existing semiconductor spin qubit setups providing insight into their coherent interaction dynamics. Retention of the initial state spin memory even in the presence of strong environmental noise has important implications for quantum computation using spin qubits.

Noise-induced collective quantum state preservation in spin qubit arrays

The hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins (or, Overhauser noise) has long been viewed as a leading source of decoherence in individual quantum dot spin qubits. Here we show that in a coupled multi-qubit system consisting of as few as four spins, interactions with nuclear spins can have the opposite effect where they instead preserve the collective quantum state of the system. This noise-induced state preservation can be realized in a linear spin qubit array using current technological capabilities. Our proposal requires no control over the Overhauser fields in the array; only experimental control over the average interqubit coupling between nearest neighbors is needed, and this is readily achieved by tuning gate voltages. Our results illustrate how the role of the environment can transform from harmful to helpful in the progression from single-qubit to multi-qubit quantum systems.

The enigmatic 12/5 fractional quantum Hall effect

We numerically study the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factors $ν=12/5$ and 13/5 (the particle-hole conjugate of 12/5) in high-quality two-dimensional GaAs heterostructures via exact diagonalization including finite well width and Landau level mixing. We find that Landau level mixing suppresses $ν=13/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect relative to $ν=12/5$. By contrast, we find both $ν=2/5$ and (its particle-hole conjugate) $ν=3/5$ fractional quantum Hall effects in the lowest Landau level to be robust under Landau level mixing and finite well-width corrections. Our results provide a possible explanation for the experimental absence of the 13/5 fractional quantum Hall state as caused by Landau level mixing effects.

Understanding analog quantum simulation dynamics in coupled ion-trap qubits

We study numerically a disordered transverse-field Ising Hamiltonian with long-range couplings. This model was recently investigated experimentally in a trapped-ion quantum simulator and was found to exhibit features of many-body localization at strong disorder. We use exact diagonalization to study the collective state preservation and the eigenstate entanglement structure as a function of both disorder strength and interaction range. Our numerical results, using the same system sizes as the experiment, verify the observation of many-body localization reported in the recent quantum simulation experiment, and point to directions for future experiments.

Abelian and Non-Abelian States in $ν=2/3$ Bilayer Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

There are several possible theoretically allowed non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that could potentially be realized in one- and two- component FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν= n+ 2/3$, for integer $n$. Some of these states even possess quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics that are powerful enough for universal topological quantum computation, and are thus of particular interest. Here, we initiate a systematic numerical study, using both exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo, to investigate the phase diagram of FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν= n+2/3$, including in particular the possibility of the non-Abelian $Z_4$ parafermion state. In $ν= 2/3$ bilayers, we determine the phase diagram as a function of interlayer tunneling and repulsion, finding only three competing Abelian states, without the $Z_4$ state. On the other hand, in single-component systems at $ν= 8/3$, we find that the $Z_4$ parafermion state has significantly higher overlap with the exact ground state than the Laughlin state, together with a larger gap, suggesting that the experimentally observed $ν= 8/3$ state may be non-Abelian. Our results from the two complementary numerical techniques agree well with each other qualitatively.

Matrix product state representation of non-Abelian quasiholes

We provide a detailed explanation of the formalism necessary to construct matrix product states for non-Abelian quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall model states. Our construction yields an efficient representation of the wave functions with conformal-block normalization and monodromy, and complements the matrix product state representation of fractional quantum Hall ground states.

Braiding non-Abelian quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall states

Quasiholes in certain fractional quantum Hall states are promising candidates for the experimental realization of non-Abelian anyons. They are assumed to be localized excitations, and to display non-Abelian statistics when sufficiently separated, but these properties have not been explicitly demonstrated except for the Moore-Read state. In this work, we apply the newly developed matrix product state technique to examine these exotic excitations. For the Moore-Read and the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi states, we estimate the quasihole radii, and determine the correlation lengths associated with the exponential convergence of the braiding statistics. We provide the first microscopic verification for the Fibonacci nature of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi quasiholes. We also present evidence for the failure of plasma screening in the non-unitary Gaffnian wave function.

Bloch Model Wavefunctions and Pseudopotentials for All Fractional Chern Insulators

We introduce a Bloch-like basis in a C-component lowest Landau level fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, which entangles the real and internal degrees of freedom and preserves an Nx x Ny full lattice translational symmetry. We implement the Haldane pseudopotential Hamiltonians in this new basis. Their ground states are the model FQH wave functions, and our Bloch basis allows for a mutatis mutandis transcription of these model wave functions to the fractional Chern insulator of arbitrary Chern number C, obtaining wave functions different from all previous proposals. For C > 1, our wave functions are related to color-dependent magnetic-flux inserted versions of Halperin and non-Abelian color-singlet states. We then provide large-size numerical results for both the C = 1 and C = 3 cases. This new approach leads to improved overlaps compared to previous proposals. We also discuss the adiabatic continuation from the fractional Chern insulator to the FQH in our Bloch basis, both from the energy and the entanglement spectrum perspectives.

Haldane Statistics for Fractional Chern Insulators with an Arbitrary Chern number

In this paper we provide analytical counting rules for the ground states and the quasiholes of fractional Chern insulators with an arbitrary Chern number. We first construct pseudopotential Hamiltonians for fractional Chern insulators. We achieve this by mapping the lattice problem to the lowest Landau level of a multicomponent continuum quantum Hall system with specially engineered boundary conditions. We then analyze the thin-torus limit of the pseudopotential Hamiltonians, and extract counting rules (generalized Pauli principles, or Haldane statistics) for the degeneracy of its zero modes in each Bloch momentum sector.

Gauge-Fixed Wannier Wave-Functions for Fractional Topological Insulators

We propose an improved scheme to construct many-body trial wave functions for fractional Chern insulators (FCI), using one-dimensional localized Wannier basis. The procedure borrows from the original scheme on a continuum cylinder, but is adapted to finite-size lattice systems with periodic boundaries. It fixes several issues of the continuum description that made the overlap with the exact ground states insignificant. The constructed lattice states are translationally invariant, and have the correct degeneracy as well as the correct relative and total momenta. Our prescription preserves the (possible) inversion symmetry of the lattice model, and is isotropic in the limit of flat Berry curvature. By relaxing the maximally localized hybrid Wannier orbital prescription, we can form an orthonormal basis of states which, upon gauge fixing, can be used in lieu of the Landau orbitals. We find that the exact ground states of several known FCI models at nu=1/3 filling are well captured by the lattice states constructed from the Laughlin wave function. The overlap is higher than 0.99 in some models when the Hilbert space dimension is as large as 3x10^4 in each total momentum sector.

Robustness of s-wave Pairing in Electron-Overdoped $\text{A}_{1-y}\text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2$

Using self consistent mean field and functional renormalization group approaches we show that s-wave pairing symmetry is robust in the heavily electron-doped iron chalcogenides $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2 $. This is because in these materials the leading antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling is between next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) sites while the nearest neighbor (NN) magnetic exchange coupling is ferromagnetic (FM). This is different from the iron pnictides, where the NN magnetic exchange coupling is AFM and leads to strong competition between s-wave and d-wave pairing in the electron overdoped region. Our finding of a robust s-wave pairing in $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2$ differs from the d-wave pairing result obtained by other theories where non-local bare interaction terms and the NNN $J_2$ term are underestimated. Detecting the pairing symmetry in $(\text{K, Cs}) \text{Fe}_{2-x}\text{Se}_2 $ may hence provide important insights regarding the mechanism of superconducting pairing in iron based superconductors.

Zoology of Fractional Chern Insulators

We study four different models of Chern insulators in the presence of strong electronic repulsion at partial fillings. We observe that all cases exhibit a Laughlin-like phase at filling fraction 1/3. We provide evidence of such a strongly correlated topological phase by studying both the energy and the entanglement spectra. In order to identify the key ingredients of the emergence of Laughlin physics in these systems, we show how they are affected when tuning the band structure. We also address the question of the relevance of the Berry curvature flatness in this problem. Using three-body interactions, we show that some models can also host a topological phase reminiscent of the nu=1/2 Pfaffian Moore-Read state. Additionally, we identify the structures indicating cluster correlations in the entanglement spectra.
