A corona theorem for an algebra of Radon measures with an application to exact controllability for linear controlled delayed difference equations

This paper proves a corona theorem for the algebra of Radon measures compactly supported in $\mathbb{R}_-$ and this result is applied to provide a necessary and sufficient Hautus--type frequency criterion for the $L^1$ exact controllability of linear controlled delayed difference equations (LCDDE). Hereby, it solves an open question raised in [6].

Barrier Function-Based Adaptive Continuous Higher-Order Sliding Mode Controllers with Unbounded Perturbations

In this paper, two classes of continuous higher order adaptive sliding mode controllers based on barrier functions are developed for a perturbed chain of integrators with unbounded perturbations. Both classes provide finite-time convergence of system states to a predefined domain using a continuous control signal. The first class of adaptive controllers does not require any assumptions about the perturbation; however, it can provide unbounded control gains. To ensure bounded control gains, and in the case of a Lipschitz perturbation, a second class of adaptive controllers, called the adaptive higher order Super-Twisting (HOST) algorithm, is developed.

General Nilpotent and Solvable Approximations of Almost-Riemannian Structures

It is first shown that the nilpotent or the solvable approximation of an almost-Riemannian structure at a singular point is always a linear almost-Riemannian structure on a Lie group or a homogeneous space. The generic properties of almost-Riemannian structures are then investigated in all dimensions and the generic nilpotent and solvable approximations are identified.

Lp-asymptotic stability of 1D damped wave equations with localized and nonlinear damping

In this paper, we study the $L^p$-asymptotic stability with $p\in (1,\infty)$ of the one-dimensional nonlinear damped wave equation with a localized damping and Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain $(0,1)$. We start by addressing the well-posedness problem. We prove the existence and the uniqueness of weak solutions for $p\in [2,\infty)$ and the existence and the uniqueness of strong solutions for all $p\in [1,\infty)$. The proofs rely on the well-posedness already proved in the $L^\infty$ framework by [4] combined with a density argument. Then we prove that the energy of strong solutions decays exponentially to zero. The proof relies on the multiplier method combined with the work that has been done in the linear case in [8].

Reproducing sensory induced hallucinations via neural fields

Understanding sensory-induced cortical patterns in the primary visual cortex V1 is an important challenge both for physiological motivations and for improving our understanding of human perception and visual organisation. In this work, we focus on pattern formation in the visual cortex when the cortical activity is driven by a geometric visual hallucination-like stimulus. In particular, we present a theoretical framework for sensory-induced hallucinations which allows one to reproduce novel psychophysical results such as the MacKay effect (Nature, 1957) and the Billock and Tsou experiences (PNAS, 2007).

Upper and lower bounds for the maximal Lyapunov exponent of singularly perturbed linear switching systems

In this paper we consider the problem of determining the stability properties, and in particular assessing the exponential stability, of a singularly perturbed linear switching system. One of the challenges of this problem arises from the intricate interplay between the small parameter of singular perturbation and the rate of switching, as both tend to zero. Our approach consists in characterizing suitable auxiliary linear systems that provide lower and upper bounds for the asymptotics of the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the linear switching system as the parameter of the singular perturbation tends to zero.

One-dimensional wave equation with set-valued boundary damping: well-posedness, asymptotic stability, and decay rates

This paper is concerned with the analysis of a one dimensional wave equation $z_{tt}-z_{xx}=0$ on $[0,1]$ with a Dirichlet condition at $x=0$ and a damping acting at $x=1$ which takes the form $(z_t(t,1),-z_x(t,1))\inΣ$ for every $t\geq 0$, where $Σ$ is a given subset of $\mathbb R^2$. The study is performed within an $L^p$ functional framework, $p\in [1, +\infty]$. We aim at determining conditions on $Σ$ ensuring existence and uniqueness of solutions of that wave equation as well as strong stability and uniform global asymptotic stability of its solutions. In the latter case, we also study the decay rates of the solutions and their optimality. We first establish a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of that wave equation and the iterated sequences of a discrete-time dynamical system in terms of which we investigate the above mentioned issues. This enables us to provide a simple necessary and sufficient condition on $Σ$ ensuring existence and uniqueness of solutions of the wave equation as well as an efficient strategy for determining optimal decay rates when $Σ$ verifies a generalized sector condition. As an application, we solve two conjectures stated in the literature, the first one seeking a specific optimal decay rate and the second one associated with a saturation type of damping. In case the boundary damping is subject to perturbations, we derive sharp results regarding asymptotic perturbation rejection and input-to-state issues.

A Lyapunov Approach to Barrier-Function Based Time-Varying Gains Higher Order Sliding Mode Controllers

In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based {\color{black}time varying} controllers for {\color{black}fast} stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as {\color{black}time varying} higher order sliding mode controllers since they are designed for nonlinear Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. %{\color{blue} OLD: Our main result states that, given any neighborhood $\varepsilon$ of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds, that every trajectory of the corresponding closed loop system enters $\varepsilon$ and eventually remains there. Furthermore, based on the homogeneity property, a new asymptotic accuracy, which depends on the size of $\varepsilon$, is presented.} We provide a time varying control feedback law insuring verifying the following: there exists a family $(D(t))_{t\geq 0}$ of time varying open sets decreasing to the origin as $t$ tends to infinity, such that, for any unknown uncertainty bounds and trajectory $z(\cdot)$ of the corresponding system, there exists a positive positve $t_z$ for which $z(t_z)\in D(t_z)$ and $z(t)\in D(t)$ for $t\geq t_z$. %enters convergence in finite time of all the trajectories to a time varying domain $D(t)$ shrinking to the origin and their maintenance there. Hence, since the function $η(t)$ tends to zero, this leads the asymptotic convergence of all the trajectories to zero. The effectiveness of these controllers is illustrated through simulations.

Controllability results for the rolling of $2$-dim. against $3$-dim. Riemannian Manifolds

In this article, we consider the rolling (or development) of two Riemannian connected manifolds $(M,g)$ and $(\hat{M},\hat{g})$ of dimensions $2$ and $3$ respectively, with the constraints of no-spinning and no-slipping. The present work is a continuation of \cite{MortadaKokkonenChitour}, which modelled the general setting of the rolling of two Riemannian connected manifolds with different dimensions as a driftless control affine system on a fibered space $Q$, with an emphasis on understanding the local structure of the rolling orbits, i.e., the reachable sets in $Q$. In this paper, the state space $Q$ has dimension eight and we show that the possible dimensions of non open rolling orbits belong to the set $\{2,5,6,7\}$. We describe the structures of orbits of dimension $2$, the possible local structures of rolling orbits of dimension $5$ and some of dimension $7$.

Fuller singularities for generic control-affine systems with an even number of controls

In this article we study how bad can be the singularities of a time-optimal trajectory of a generic control affine system. In the case where the control is scalar and belongs to a closed interval it was recently shown in [6] that singularities cannot be, generically, worse than finite order accumulations of Fuller points, with order of accumulation lower than a bound depending only on the dimension of the manifold where the system is set. We extend here such a result to the case where the control has an even number of scalar components and belongs to a closed ball.

Lyapunov characterization of uniform exponential stability for nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems

In this paper we deal with infinite-dimensional nonlinear forward complete dynamical systems which are subject to external disturbances. We first extend the well-known Datko lemma to the framework of the considered class of systems. Thanks to this generalization, we provide characterizations of the uniform (with respect to disturbances) local, semi-global, and global exponential stability, through the existence of coercive and non-coercive Lyapunov functionals. The importance of the obtained results is underlined through some applications concerning 1) exponential stability of nonlinear retarded systems with piecewise constant delays, 2) exponential stability preservation under sampling for semilinear control switching systems, and 3) the link between input-to-state stability and exponential stability of semilinear switching systems.

Velocity-aided IMU-based Attitude Estimation

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the attitude of a rigid body, which is subject to high accelerations and equipped with inertial measurement unit (IMU) and sensors providing the body velocity (expressed in the reference frame attached to the body). That issue can be treated differently depending on the level of confidence in the measurements of the magnetometer of the IMU, particularly with regard to the observation of the inclination component with respect to the vertical direction, rendering possible to describe the interaction with gravity. Two cases are then studied: either (i) the magnetometer is absent and only the inclination can be estimated, (ii) the magnetometer is present, giving redundancy and full attitude observability. In the latter case, the presented observer allows to tune how much the inclination estimation is influenced by the magnetometer. All state estimators are proposed with proof of almost global asymptotic stability and local exponential convergence. Finally, these estimators are compared with state-of-the-art solutions in clean and noisy simulations, allowing recommended solutions to be drawn for each case.

Worst Exponential Decay Rate for Degenerate Gradient flows subject to persistent excitation

In this paper we estimate the worst rate of exponential decay of degenerate gradient flows $\dot x = -S x$, issued from adaptive control theory. Under persistent excitation assumptions on the positive semi-definite matrix $S$, we provide upper bounds for this rate of decay consistent with previously known lower bounds and analogous stability results for more general classes of persistently excited signals. The strategy of proof consists in relating the worst decay rate to optimal control questions and studying in details their solutions. As a byproduct of our analysis, we also obtain estimates for the worst $L_2$-gain of the time-varying linear control systems $\dot x=-cc^\top x+u$, where the signal $c$ is persistently excited, thus solving an open problem posed by A. Rantzer in 1999.

A characterization of switched linear control systems with finite L 2 -gain

Motivated by an open problem posed by J.P. Hespanha, we extend the notion of Barabanov norm and extremal trajectory to classes of switching signals that are not closed under concatenation. We use these tools to prove that the finiteness of the L2-gain is equivalent, for a large set of switched linear control systems, to the condition that the generalized spectral radius associated with any minimal realization of the original switched system is smaller than one.

Global stabilization of linear systems with bounds on the feedback and its successive derivatives

We address the global stabilization of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems when the magnitude of the control input and its successive time derivatives, up to an order $p\in\mathbb N$, are bounded by prescribed values. We propose a static state feedback that solves this problem for any admissible LTI systems, namely for stabilizable systems whose internal dynamics has no eigenvalue with positive real part. This generalizes previous work done for single-input chains of integrators and rotating dynamics.

Higher order super-twisting algorithm for perturbed chains of integrators of arbitrary order

In this paper, we present a generalization of the super-twisting algorithm for perturbed chains of integrators of arbitrary order. This Higher Order Super-Twisting (HOST) controller, which extends the approach of Moreno and als., is homegeneous with respect to a family of dilations and can be continuous. Its design is derived from a first result obtained for pure chains of integrators, the latter relying on a geometric condition introduced by the authors. The complete result is established using a homogeneous strict Lyapunov function which is explicitely constructed. The effectiveness of the controller is finally illustrated with simulations for a chain of integrator of order four, first pure then perturbed, where we compare the performances of two HOST controllers.

Practical stabilization of perturbed integrator chains with unknown bounds

In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based adaptive controllers for the practical (or real) stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. We refer to such controllers as Adaptive Higher Order Sliding Mode (AHOSM) controllers since they are designed for nonlinear SISO systems with bounded uncertainties such that the uncertainty bounds are unknown. Our main result states that, given any neighborhood N of the origin, we determine a controller insuring, for every uncertainty bounds, that every trajectory of the corresponding closed loop system enters N and eventually remains there. The effectiveness of these controllers is illustrated through simulations.

Stability of non-autonomous difference equations with applications to transport and wave propagation on networks

In this paper, we address the stability of transport systems and wave propagation on networks with time-varying parameters. We do so by reformulating these systems as non-autonomous difference equations and by providing a suitable representation of their solutions in terms of their initial conditions and some time-dependent matrix coefficients. This enables us to characterize the asymptotic behavior of solutions in terms of such coefficients. In the case of difference equations with arbitrary switching, we obtain a delay-independent generalization of the well-known criterion for autonomous systems due to Hale and Silkowski. As a consequence, we show that exponential stability of transport systems and wave propagation on networks is robust with respect to variations of the lengths of the edges of the network preserving their rational dependence structure. This leads to our main result: the wave equation on a network with arbitrarily switching damping at external vertices is exponentially stable if and only if the network is a tree and the damping is bounded away from zero at all external vertices but at most one.

$L^1$-Minimization for Mechanical Systems

Second order systems whose drift is defined by the gradient of a given potential are considered, and minimization of the $L^1$-norm of the control is addressed. An analysis of the extremal flow emphasizes the role of singular trajectories of order two [25,29]; the case of the two-body potential is treated in detail. In $L^1$-minimization, regular extremals are associated with controls whose norm is bang-bang; in order to assess their optimality properties, sufficient conditions are given for broken extremals and related to the no-fold conditions of [20]. An example of numerical verification of these conditions is proposed on a problem coming from space mechanics.

Controllability of Keplerian Motion with Low-Thrust Control Systems

In this paper, we present the controllability properties of Keplerian motion controlled by low-thrust control systems. The low-thrust control system, compared with high or even impulsive control system, provide a fuel-efficient means to control the Keplerian motion of a satellite in restricted two-body problem. We obtain that, for any positive value of maximum thrust, the motion is controllable for orbital transfer problems. For two other typical problems: de-orbit problem and orbital insertion problem, which have state constraints, the motion is controllable if and only if the maximum thrust is bigger than a limiting value. Finally, two numerical examples are given to show the numerical method to compute the limiting value.

Global stabilization of classes of linear control systems with bounds on the feedback and its successive derivatives

In this paper, we address the problem of globally stabilizing a linear time-invariant (LTI) system by means of a static feedback law whose amplitude and successive time derivatives, up to a prescribed order $p$, are bounded by arbitrary prescribed values. We solve this problem for two classes of LTI systems, namely integrator chains and skew-symmetric systems with single input. For the integrator chains, the solution we propose is based on the nested saturations introduced by A.R. Teel. We show that this construction fails for skew-symmetric systems and propose an alternative feedback law. We illustrate these findings by the stabilization of the third order integrator with prescribed bounds on the feedback and its first two derivatives, and similarly for the harmonic oscillator with prescribed bounds on the feedback and its first derivative.

Global stabilization of multiple integrators by a bounded feedback with constraints on its successive derivatives

In this paper, we address the global stabilization of chains of integrators by means of a bounded static feedback law whose p first time derivatives are bounded. Our construction is based on the technique of nested saturations introduced by Teel. We show that the control amplitude and the maximum value of its p first derivatives can be imposed below any prescribed values. Our results are illustrated by the stabilization of the third order integrator on the feedback and its first two derivatives.

$L_p$-stabilization of integrator chains subject to input saturation using Lyapunov-based homogeneous design

Consider the $n$-th integrator $\dot x=J_nx+σ(u)e_n$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $u\in \mathbb{R}$, $J_n$ is the $n$-th Jordan block and $e_n=(0\ \cdots 0\ 1)^T\in\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide easily implementable state feedback laws $u=k(x)$ which not only render the closed-loop system globally asymptotically stable but also are finite-gain $L_p$-stabilizing with arbitrarily small gain. These $L_p$-stabilizing state feedbacks are built from homogeneous feedbacks appearing in finite-time stabilization of linear systems. We also provide additional $L_\infty$-stabilization results for the case of both internal and external disturbances of the $n$-th integrator, namely for the perturbed system $\dot x=J_nx+e_nσ(k(x)+d)+D$ where $d\in\mathbb{R}$ and $D\in\mathbb{R}^n$.

Generalized robust shrinkage estimator and its application to STAP detection problem

Recently, in the context of covariance matrix estimation, in order to improve as well as to regularize the performance of the Tyler's estimator [1] also called the Fixed-Point Estimator (FPE) [2], a "shrinkage" fixed-point estimator has been introduced in [3]. First, this work extends the results of [3,4] by giving the general solution of the "shrinkage" fixed-point algorithm. Secondly, by analyzing this solution, called the generalized robust shrinkage estimator, we prove that this solution converges to a unique solution when the shrinkage parameter $β$ (losing factor) tends to 0. This solution is exactly the FPE with the trace of its inverse equal to the dimension of the problem. This general result allows one to give another interpretation of the FPE and more generally, on the Maximum Likelihood approach for covariance matrix estimation when constraints are added. Then, some simulations illustrate our theoretical results as well as the way to choose an optimal shrinkage factor. Finally, this work is applied to a Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) detection problem on real STAP data.

Geometric and asymptotic properties associated with linear switched systems

Consider continuous-time linear switched systems on R^n associated with compact convex sets of matrices. When the system is irreducible and the largest Lyapunov exponent is equal to zero, there always exists a Barabanov norm (i.e. a norm which is non increasing along trajectories of the linear switched system together with extremal trajectories starting at every point, that is trajectories of the linear switched system with constant norm). This paper deals with two sets of issues: (a) properties of Barabanov norms such as uniqueness up to homogeneity and strict convexity; (b) asymptotic behaviour of the extremal solutions of the linear switched system. Regarding Issue (a), we provide partial answers and propose four open problems motivated by appropriate examples. As for Issue (b), we establish, when n = 3, a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem under a regularity assumption on the set of matrices defining the system. Moreover, we revisit the noteworthy result of N.E. Barabanov [5] dealing with the linear switched system on R^3 associated with a pair of Hurwitz matrices {A, A + bcT }. We first point out a fatal gap in Barabanov's argument in connection with geometric features associated with a Barabanov norm. We then provide partial answers relative to the asymptotic behavior of this linear switched system.

Horizontal Holonomy for Affine Manifolds

In this paper, we consider a smooth connected finite-dimensional manifold $M$, an affine connection $\nabla$ with holonomy group $H^{\nabla}$ and $Δ$ a smooth completely non integrable distribution. We define the $Δ$-horizontal holonomy group $H^{\;\nabla}_Δ$ as the subgroup of $H^{\nabla}$ obtained by $\nabla$-parallel transporting frames only along loops tangent to $Δ$. We first set elementary properties of $H^{\;\nabla}_Δ$ and show how to study it using the rolling formalism (\cite{ChitourKokkonen}). In particular, it is shown that $H^{\;\nabla}_Δ$ is a Lie group. Moreover, we study an explicit example where $M$ is a free step-two homogeneous Carnot group and $\nabla$ is the Levi-Civita connection associated to a Riemannian metric on $M$, and show that in this particular case the connected component of the identity of $H^{\;\nabla}_Δ$ is compact and strictly included in $H^{\nabla}$.

On the convergence of Maronna's $M$-estimators of scatter

In this paper, {we propose an alternative proof for the uniqueness} of Maronna's $M$-estimator of scatter (Maronna, 1976) for $N$ vector observations $\mathbf y_1,...,\mathbf y_N\in\mathbb R^m$ under a mild constraint of linear independence of any subset of $m$ of these vectors. This entails in particular almost sure uniqueness for random vectors $\mathbf y_i$ with a density as long as $N>m$. {This approach allows to establish further relations that demonstrate that a properly normalized Tyler's $M$-estimator of scatter (Tyler, 1987) can be considered as a limit of Maronna's $M$-estimator. More precisely, the contribution is to show that each $M$-estimator converges towards a particular Tyler's $M$-estimator.} These results find important implications in recent works on the large dimensional (random matrix) regime of robust $M$-estimation.

Rolling against a sphere: The non transitive case

We study the control system of a Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $n$ rolling on the sphere $S^n$. The controllability of this system is described in terms of the holonomy of a vector bundle connection which, we prove, is isomorphic to the Riemannian holonomy group of the cone $C(M)$ of $M$. Using Berger's list, we reduce the possible holonomies to a few families. In particular, we focus on the cases where the holonomy is the unitary and the symplectic group. In the first case, using the rolling formalism, we construct explicitly a Sasakian structure on $M$; and in the second case, we construct a 3-Sasakian structure on $M$.

Stabilization of perturbed integrator chains using Lyapunov-Based Homogeneous Controllers

In this paper, we present a Lyapunov-based homogeneous controller for the stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators of arbitrary order $r\geq 1$. The proposed controller is based on homogeneous controller for stabilization of pure integrator chains. The advantages to control the homogeneity degree of the controller are also discussed. A bounded-controller with minimum amplitude of discontinuous control and a controller with fixed-time convergence are synthesized, using control of homogeneity degree, and their performances are shown in simulations. It is demonstrated that the homogeneous arbitrary HOSM controller \cite{Levant2001} is a particular case of our controller.

A Lyapunov approach to Robust and Adaptive finite time stabilization of integrator chains with bounded uncertainty

In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based robust and adaptive controllers for the finite time stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. The proposed controllers can be designed for integrator chains of any arbitrary length. The uncertainty bounds are known in the robust control problem whereas they are unknown in the adaptive control problem. Both controllers are developed from a class of finite time stabilization controllers for pure integrator chains. Lyapunov-based design permits to calculate upper bound on convergence time.

Generic properties of the spectrum of the Stokes system with Dirichlet boundary condition in R^3

Let (SD_Ω) be the Stokes operator defined in a bounded domain Ωof R^3 with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that, generically with respect to the domain Ωwith C^5 boundary, the spectrum of (SD_Ω) satisfies a non resonant property introduced by C. Foias and J. C. Saut to linearize the Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain Ωof R^3 with Dirichlet boundary conditions. For that purpose, we first prove that, generically with respect to the domain Ωwith C^5 boundary, all the eigenvalues of (SD_Ω) are simple. That answers positively a question raised by J. H. Ortega and E. Zuazua. The proofs of these results follow a standard strategy based on a contradiction argument requiring shape differentiation. One needs to shape differentiate at least twice the initial problem in the direction of carefully chosen domain variations. The main step of the contradiction argument amounts to study the evaluation of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators associated to these domain variations.

Global tracking for an underactuated ships with bounded feedback controllers

In this paper, we present a global state feedback tracking controller for underactuated surface marine vessels. This controller is based on saturated control inputs and, under an assumption on the reference trajectory, the closed-loop system is globally asymptotically stable (GAS). It has been designed using a 3 Degree of Freedom benchmark vessel model used in marine engineering. The main feature of our controller is the boundedness of the control inputs, which is an essential consideration in real life. In absence of velocity measurements, the controller works and remains stable with observers and can be used as an output feedback controller. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

Growth rates for persistently excited linear systems

We consider a family of linear control systems $\dot{x}=Ax+αBu$ where $α$ belongs to a given class of persistently exciting signals. We seek maximal $α$-uniform stabilisation and destabilisation by means of linear feedbacks $u=Kx$. We extend previous results obtained for bidimensional single-input linear control systems to the general case as follows: if the pair $(A,B)$ verifies a certain Lie bracket generating condition, then the maximal rate of convergence of $(A,B)$ is equal to the maximal rate of divergence of $(-A,-B)$. We also provide more precise results in the general single-input case, where the above result is obtained under the sole assumption of controllability of the pair $(A,B)$.

Rolling Manifolds of Different Dimensions

If $(M,g)$ and $(\hM,\hg)$ are two smooth connected complete oriented Riemannian manifolds of dimensions $n$ and $\hn$ respectively, we model the rolling of $(M,g)$ onto $(\hM,\hg)$ as a driftless control affine systems describing two possible constraints of motion: the first rolling motion $Σ_{NS}$ captures the no-spinning condition only and the second rolling motion $Σ_{R}$ corresponds to rolling without spinning nor slipping. Two distributions of dimensions $(n + \hn)$ and $n$, respectively, are then associated to the rolling motions $Σ_{NS}$ and $Σ_{R}$ respectively. This generalizes the rolling problems considered in \cite{ChitourKokkonen1} where both manifolds had the same dimension. The controllability issue is then addressed for both $Σ_{NS}$ and $Σ_{R}$ and completely solved for $Σ_{NS}$. As regards to $Σ_{R}$, basic properties for the reachable sets are provided as well as the complete study of the case $(n,\hn)=(3,2)$ and some sufficient conditions for non-controllability.

Symmetries of the Rolling Model

In the present paper, we study the infinitesimal symmetries of the model of two Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ and $(\hat M,\hat g)$ rolling without twisting or slipping. We show that, under certain genericity hypotheses, the natural bundle projection from the state space $Q$ of the rolling model onto $M$ is a principal bundle if and only if $\hat M$ has constant sectional curvature. Additionally, we prove that when $M$ and $\hat M$ have different constant sectional curvatures and dimension $n\geq3$, the rolling distribution is never flat, contrary to the two dimensional situation of rolling two spheres of radii in the proportion $1\colon3$, which is a well-known system satisfying É. Cartan's flatness condition.

Target-point based path following controller for a car-type vehicle using bounded controls

In this paper, we have studied the control problem of target-point based path following for car-type vehicles. This special path following task arises from the needs of vision based guidance systems, where a given target-point located ahead of the vehicle, in the visual range of the camera, must follow a specified path. A solution to this problem is developed through a non linear transformation of the path following problem into a reference trajectory tracking problem, by modeling the target point as a virtual vehicle. Bounded feedback laws must be then used on the real vehicle's angular acceleration and the virtual vehicle's velocity, to achieve stability. The resulting controller is globally asymptotically stable with respect and the proof is demonstrated using Lyapunov based arguments and a bootstrap argument. The effectiveness of this controller has been illustrated through simulations.

The rolling problem: overview and challenges

In the present paper we give a historical account -ranging from classical to modern results- of the problem of rolling two Riemannian manifolds one on the other, with the restrictions that they cannot instantaneously slip or spin one with respect to the other. On the way we show how this problem has profited from the development of intrinsic Riemannian geometry, from geometric control theory and sub-Riemannian geometry. We also mention how other areas -such as robotics and interpolation theory- have employed the rolling model.

A Global Steering Method for Nonholonomic Systems

In this paper, we present an iterative steering algorithm for nonholonomic systems (also called driftless control-affine systems) and we prove its global convergence under the sole assumption that the Lie Algebraic Rank Condition (LARC) holds true everywhere. That algorithm is an extension of the one introduced in [21] for regular systems. The first novelty here consists in the explicit algebraic construction, starting from the original control system, of a lifted control system which is regular. The second contribution of the paper is an exact motion planning method for nilpotent systems, which makes use of sinusoidal control laws and which is a generalization of the algorithm described in [29] for chained-form systems.

Extension of de Rham decomposition theorem via non-Euclidean development

In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ to have a reducible action of a hyperbolic analogue of the holonomy group. This condition amounts to a decomposition of $(M,g)$ as a warped product of a special form, in analogy to the classical de Rham decomposition theorem for Riemannian manifolds. As a consequence of these results and Berger's classification of holonomy groups, we obtain a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the complete controllability of the system of $(M,g)$ rolling against the hyperbolic space.

Rolling Manifolds: Intrinsic Formulation and Controllability

In this paper, we consider two cases of rolling of one smooth connected complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ onto another one $(\hM,\hg)$ of equal dimension $n\geq 2$. The rolling problem $(NS)$ corresponds to the situation where there is no relative spin (or twist) of one manifold with respect to the other one. As for the rolling problem $(R)$, there is no relative spin and also no relative slip. Since the manifolds are not assumed to be embedded into an Euclidean space, we provide an intrinsic description of the two constraints "without spinning" and "without slipping" in terms of the Levi-Civita connections $\nabla^{g}$ and $\nabla^{\hg}$. For that purpose, we recast the two rolling problems within the framework of geometric control and associate to each of them a distribution and a control system. We then investigate the relationships between the two control systems and we address for both of them the issue of complete controllability. For the rolling $(NS)$, the reachable set (from any point) can be described exactly in terms of the holonomy groups of $(M,g)$ and $(\hM,\hg)$ respectively, and thus we achieve a complete understanding of the controllability properties of the corresponding control system. As for the rolling $(R)$, the problem turns out to be more delicate. We first provide basic global properties for the reachable set and investigate the associated Lie bracket structure. In particular, we point out the role played by a curvature tensor defined on the state space, that we call the \emph{rolling curvature}. In the case where one of the manifolds is a space form (let say $(\hM,\hg)$), we show that it is enough to roll along loops of $(M,g)$ and the resulting orbits carry a structure of principal bundle which preserves the rolling $(R)$ distribution. In the zero curvature case, we deduce that the rolling $(R)$ is completely controllable if and only if the holonomy group of $(M,g)$ is equal to SO(n). In the nonzero curvature case, we prove that the structure group of the principal bundle can be realized as the holonomy group of a connection on $TM\oplus \R$, that we call the rolling connection. We also show, in the case of positive (constant) curvature, that if the rolling connection is reducible, then $(M,g)$ admits, as Riemannian covering, the unit sphere with the metric induced from the Euclidean metric of $\R^{n+1}$. When the two manifolds are three-dimensional, we provide a complete local characterization of the reachable sets when the two manifolds are three-dimensional and, in particular, we identify necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a non open orbit. Besides the trivial case where the manifolds $(M,g)$ and $(\hM,\hg)$ are (locally) isometric, we show that (local) non controllability occurs if and only if $(M,g)$ and $(\hM,\hg)$ are either warped products or contact manifolds with additional restrictions that we precisely describe. Finally, we extend the two types of rolling to the case where the manifolds have different dimensions.

Optimal control models of the goal-oriented human locomotion

In recent papers it has been suggested that human locomotion may be modeled as an inverse optimal control problem. In this paradigm, the trajectories are assumed to be solutions of an optimal control problem that has to be determined. We discuss the modeling of both the dynamical system and the cost to be minimized, and we analyze the corresponding optimal synthesis. The main results describe the asymptotic behavior of the optimal trajectories as the target point goes to infinity.

Uniform stabilization for linear systems with persistency of excitation. The neutrally stable and the double integrator cases

Consider the controlled system $dx/dt = Ax + α(t)Bu$ where the pair $(A,B)$ is stabilizable and $α(t)$ takes values in $[0,1]$ and is persistently exciting, i.e., there exist two positive constants $μ,T$ such that, for every $t\geq 0$, $\int_t^{t+T}α(s)ds\geq μ$. In particular, when $α(t)$ becomes zero the system dynamics switches to an uncontrollable system. In this paper, we address the following question: is it possible to find a linear time-invariant state-feedback $u=Kx$, with $K$ only depending on $(A,B)$ and possibly on $μ,T$, which globally asymptotically stabilizes the system? We give a positive answer to this question for two cases: when $A$ is neutrally stable and when the system is the double integrator.

Singular trajectories of control-affine systems

When applying methods of optimal control to motion planning or stabilization problems, some theoretical or numerical difficulties may arise, due to the presence of specific trajectories, namely, singular minimizing trajectories of the underlying optimal control problem. In this article, we provide characterizations for singular trajectories of control-affine systems. We prove that, under generic assumptions, such trajectories share nice properties, related to computational aspects; more precisely, we show that, for a generic system -- with respect to the Whitney topology --, all nontrivial singular trajectories are of minimal order and of corank one. These results, established both for driftless and for control-affine systems, extend previous results. As a consequence, for generic systems having more than two vector fields, and for a fixed cost, there do not exist minimizing singular trajectories. We also prove that, given a control system satisfying the LARC, singular trajectories are strictly abnormal, generically with respect to the cost. We then show how these results can be used to derive regularity results for the value function and in the theory of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which in turn have applications for stabilization and motion planning, both from the theoretical and implementation issues.
