A study on energy resolution of CANDLES detector

In a neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ0νββ) experiment, energy resolution is important to distinguish between 0νββ0νββ and background events. CAlcium fluoride for studies of Neutrino and Dark matters by Low Energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) discerns the 0νββ0νββ of 48^{48}Ca using a CaF2_2 scintillator as the detector and source. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) collect scintillation photons. At the Q-value of 48^{48}Ca, the current energy resolution (2.6%) exceeds the ideal statistical fluctuation of the number of photoelectrons (1.6%). Because of CaF2_2's long decay constant of 1000 ns, a signal integration within 4000 ns is used to calculate the energy. The baseline fluctuation (σbaselineσ_{baseline}) is accumulated in the signal integration, thus degrading the energy resolution. This paper studies σbaselineσ_{baseline} in the CANDLES detector, which severely degrades the resolution by 1% at the Q-value of 48^{48}Ca. To avoid σbaselineσ_{\rm baseline}, photon counting can be used to obtain the number of photoelectrons in each PMT; however, a significant photoelectron signal overlapping probability in each PMT causes missing photoelectrons in counting and reduces the energy resolution. "Partial photon counting" reduces σbaselineσ_{baseline} and minimizes photoelectron loss. We obtain improved energy resolutions of 4.5-4.0% at 1460.8 keV (γγ-ray of 40^{40}K), and 3.3-2.9% at 2614.5 keV (γγ-ray of 208^{208}Tl). The energy resolution at the Q-value is estimated to be improved from 2.6% to 2.2%, and the detector sensitivity for the 0νββ0νββ half-life of 48^{48}Ca can be improved by 1.09 times.

Background Studies for the MINER Coherent Neutrino Scattering Reactor Experiment

The proposed Mitchell Institute Neutrino Experiment at Reactor (MINER) experiment at the Nuclear Science Center at Texas A&M University will search for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering within close proximity (about 2 meters) of a 1 MW TRIGA nuclear reactor core using low threshold, cryogenic germanium and silicon detectors. Given the Standard Model cross section of the scattering process and the proposed experimental proximity to the reactor, as many as 5 to 20 events/kg/day are expected. We discuss the status of preliminary measurements to characterize the main backgrounds for the proposed experiment. Both in situ measurements at the experimental site and simulations using the MCNP and GEANT4 codes are described. A strategy for monitoring backgrounds during data taking is briefly discussed.

Search for the rare decay K+→μ+ννˉνK^+\toμ^+ν\barνν

Evidence of the K+→μ+ννˉνK^+\toμ^+ν\barνν decay was searched for using E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70×10121.70\times 10^{12} stopped kaons. The data sample is dominated by the backgrond process K+→μ+νμγK^+\toμ^+ν_μγ. An upper limit on the decay rate Γ(K+→μ+ννˉν)<2.4×10−6Γ(K+→all)Γ(K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}Γ(K^+\to all) at 90% confidence level was set assuming the Standard Model muon spectrum. The data are presented in such a way as to allow calculation of rates for any assumed μ+μ^+ spectrum.

Search for heavy neutrinos in K+→μ+νHK^+\toμ^+ν_H decays

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, νHν_H, in the K+→μ+νHK^+\toμ^+ν_H decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of 1.70×10121.70\times 10^{12} stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative K+→μ+νμγK^+\toμ^+ν_μγ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, ∣UμH∣2|U_{μH}|^2, were set at the level of 10−710^{-7} to 10−910^{-9} for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/c2c^2.

Probing New Physics Models of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with SuperNEMO

The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy distributions.

Results of the BiPo-1 prototype for radiopurity measurements for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils

The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of extremely high radiopurity in 208^{208}Tl and 214^{214}Bi for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8 m2m^2 of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in 208^{208}Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface activity of the scintillators of A\mathcal{A}(208^{208}Tl) == 1.5 μμBq/m2^2 is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo detector having 12 m2^2 of active surface area, is able to qualify the radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required sensitivity of A\mathcal{A}(208^{208}Tl) << 2 μμBq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six month measurement.

Spectral modeling of scintillator for the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO detectors

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of 207Bi\rm ^{207}Bi and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our modeling approach and results of our studies.
