Terahertz lattice and charge dynamics in ferroelectric semiconductor Sn$_x$Pb$_{1-x}$Te

The symmetry breaking induced by the ferroelectric transition often triggers the emergence of topological electronic states such as Weyl fermions in ferroelectric-like metals/semimetals. Such strong coupling between the lattice deformation and electronic states is therefore essentially important for the control of novel topological phases. Here, we study the terahertz lattice and charge dynamics in ferroelectric semiconductor SnxPb1-xTe thin films hosting versatile topological phases by means of the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. With lowering the temperature, the resonant frequency of transverse optical phonon shows the significant softening and upturn. This temperature anomaly of lattice dynamics directly indicates the displacive-type ferroelectric transition. The resulting phase diagram suggests the enhancement of ferroelectricity in the films due to compressive strain compared with the bulk crystals. The soft phonon induces the large DC and terahertz dielectric constant even in metallic state. Furthermore, we find that the Born effective charge of soft phonon mode is enhanced at around the compositions showing the band gap closing associated with the topological transition.

Experimental signature of parity anomaly in semi-magnetic topological insulator

A three-dimensional topological insulator features a two-dimensional surface state consisting of a single linearly-dispersive Dirac cone. Under broken time-reversal symmetry, the single Dirac cone is predicted to cause half-integer quantization of Hall conductance, which is a manifestation of the parity anomaly in quantum field theory. However, despite various observations of quantization phenomena, the half-integer quantization has been elusive because a pair of equivalent Dirac cones on two opposing surfaces are simultaneously measured in ordinary experiments. Here we demonstrate the half-integer quantization of Hall conductance in a synthetic heterostructure termed a 'semi-magnetic' topological insulator, where only one surface state is gapped by magnetic doping and the opposite one is non-magnetic and gapless. We observe half quantized Faraday/Kerr rotations with terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy and half quantized Hall conductance in transport at zero magnetic field. Our results suggest a condensed-matter realization of the parity anomaly and open a way for studying unconventional physics enabled by a single Dirac fermion.

Microwave directional dichroism resonant with spin excitations in the polar ferromagnet GaV$_4$S$_8$

We have investigated the directional dichroism of magnetic resonance spectra in the polar ferromagnet GaV$_4$S$_8$. While four types of structural domains are energetically degenerated under zero field, the magnetic resonance for each domain is well separated by applying magnetic fields due to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Consequently, the directional dichroism as large as 20 % is clearly observed without domain cancellation. The present observation therefore demonstrates that not only magnetoelectric mono-domain crystals but also magnetoelectric multi-domain specimens can be used to realize microwave (optical) diodes owing to the lack of inversion domains.

Propagating spin excitations along skyrmion strings

Magnetic skyrmions, topological solitons characterized by a two-dimensional swirling spin texture, have recently attracted attention as stable particle-like objects. In a three-dimensional system, a skyrmion can extend in the third dimension forming a robust and flexible string structure, whose unique topology and symmetry are anticipated to host nontrivial functional responses. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the coherent propagation of spin excitations along skyrmion strings for the chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3. We find that this propagation is directionally non-reciprocal, and the degree of non-reciprocity, as well as the associated group velocity and decay length, are strongly dependent on the character of the excitation modes. Our theoretical calculation establishes the corresponding dispersion relationship, which well reproduces the experimentally observed features. Notably, these spin excitations can propagate over a distance exceeding 10^3 times the skyrmion diameter, demonstrating the excellent long-range nature of the excitation propagation on the skyrmion strings. Our combined experimental and theoretical results offer a comprehensive account of the propagation dynamics of skyrmion-string excitations, and suggest the possibility of unidirectional information transfer along such topologically-protected strings.

Nonreciprocal spin wave propagation in chiral-lattice ferromagnets

Spin current, i.e. the flow of spin angular momentum or magnetic moment, has recently attracted much attention as the promising alternative for charge current with better energy efficiency. Genuine spin current is generally carried by the spin wave (propagating spin precession) in insulating ferromagnets, and should hold the chiral symmetry when it propagates along the spin direction. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that such a spin wave spin current (SWSC) shows nonreciprocal propagation characters in a chiral-lattice ferromagnet. This phenomenon originates from the interference of chirality between the SWSC and crystal-lattice, which is mediated by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The present finding enables the design of perfect spin current diode, and highlights the importance of the chiral aspect in SWSC.

Observation of magnetic excitations of skyrmion crystal in a helimagnetic insulator

The skyrmion is a topologically stable spin texture, in which the spin direction wraps a sphere. The topological nature gives rise to emergent electromagnetic phenomena such as topological Hall effect. Recently, the crystallization of nanoscale skyrmions was observed in chiral helimagnets with use of the neutron diffraction and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmions are quite mobile under electric current density as low as $\sim$ 10$^6$ A/m$^2$, and, in some cases, stable up to near room temperature. These features suggest that the skyrmions may work as a magnetic stable-variable similar to the bubble memory but equipped with topological functionalities. Here, we investigate the low-energy excitations of the skyrmion crystal in a helimagnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ in terms of microwave response. We have observed two distinct excitations of the skyrmion with different polarization characteristics; the counter-clockwise circulating mode at 1 GHz and the breathing mode at 1.5 GHz. These modes may play a crucial role in the low energy dynamics of skyrmions and hence in their manipulation via external stimuli.

Tomonaga-Luttinger-Liquid Theory of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes with Open Boundaries

Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid theory is formulated for metallic carbon nanotubes with open boundaries. Both cases of single- and multi-wall nanotubes are discussed. Based on this theory, spatial variation of the charge density from an edge is investigated with taking account of the shift of the chemical potential which expresses the carrier injection to the nanotube. The charge density has the spatially independent part and the oscillatory component. Roles of Coulomb interaction on the amplitude of the oscillation, the wavenumbers of it and the uniform component of the charge density are clarified.

Infrared Properties of SiO Maser Sources in Late-Type Stars

Results of an SiO maser survey for the late-type stars selected by the IRTS (Infrared Telescope in Space) are presented. We have detected SiO J=1-0, v=1 and/or v=2 lines in 27 stars out of 59 stars. The maser intensity increases with the depth of the H2O absorption in the infrared spectra and redness of the 2.2 and 12 micron color. The column densities of the water vapor in the target stars are estimated from the depth of the water absorption in the IRTS spectra. We found that the SiO maser was detected mostly in the stars with the column density of water vapor higher than 3x10^19-3x10^20 cm^-2. We further estimate the density of hydrogen molecules in the outer atmosphere corresponding to these column densities, obtaining 10^9 - 10^10 cm^-3 as a lower limit. These values are roughly in agreement with the critical hydrogen density predicted by models for the excitation of the SiO masers. It is possible that the SiO masers are excited in clumps with even higher than this density. The present results provide useful information on the understanding of the physical conditions of the outer atmospheres in late-type stars.
