Mu2e Conceptual Design Report

Mu2e at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the conceptual design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-1 approval, which was granted July 11, 2012.

High precision calculations of electroweak radiative corrections for polarized Moller scattering at one loop and beyond

Parity-violating Moller scattering measurements are a powerful probe of new physics effects, and the upcoming high-precision experiments will require a new level of accuracy for electroweak radiative corrections (EWC). First, we perform the updated calculations of one-loop EWC for Moller scattering asymmetry using two different approaches: semi-automatic, precise, with FeynArts and FormCalc as base languages, and "by hand", with reasonable approximations. In addition, we provide a tuned comparison between the one-loop results obtained in two different renormalization schemes: on-shell and constrained differential renormalization. As the last step, we discuss the two-loop EWC induced by squaring one-loop diagrams, and show that the significant size of this partial correction indicates a need for a complete study of the two-loop EWC in order to meet the precision goals of future experiments.

One-loop electroweak corrections for polarized Moller scattering at different renormalization schemes and conditions

Using two different approaches, we perform updated and detailed calculations of the complete one-loop (Next-to-Leading Order (NLO)) set of electroweak radiative corrections to the parity violating e- e- -> e- e- (gamma) scattering asymmetry. Our first approach, more classical, relies on calculations "by hand" with reasonable approximations. Our second approach relies on program packages FeynArts, FormCalc, LoopTools, and FORM. The detailed numerical analysis of the various contributions is provided for a wide range of energies relevant for the ultra-precise 11 GeV MOLLER experiment planned at the Jefferson Laboratory, as well as future experiments at the International Linear Collider (ILC). The numerical results obtained within the on-shell renormalization scheme using two different sets of renormalization conditions are in excellent agreement. We also calculate the total NLO correction in the Constrained Differential Renormalization (CDR) scheme. Analysis of the results, along with the increasing experimental precision, shows that it is feasible that the corrections at the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) level may be important for the next generation of high-precision experiments.

Quadratic electroweak corrections for polarized Moller scattering

The paper discusses the two-loop (NNLO) electroweak radiative corrections to the parity violating electron-electron scattering asymmetry induced by squaring one-loop diagrams. The calculations are relevant for the ultra-precise 11 GeV MOLLER experiment planned at Jefferson Laboratory and experiments at high-energy future electron colliders. The imaginary parts of the amplitudes are taken into consideration consistently in both the infrared-finite and divergent terms. The size of the obtained partial correction is significant, which indicates a need for a complete study of the two-loop electroweak radiative corrections in order to meet the precision goals of future experiments.

Production of high purity TeO2 single crystals for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use TeO2 crystals are described.
