Piezo-optomechanical cantilever modulators for VLSI visible photonics

Visible-wavelength very large-scale integration (VLSI) photonic circuits have potential to play important roles in quantum information and sensing technologies. The realization of scalable, high-speed, and low-loss photonic mesh circuits depends on reliable and well-engineered visible photonic components. Here we report a low-voltage optical phase shifter based on piezo-actuated mechanical cantilevers, fabricated on a CMOS compatible, 200 mm wafer-based visible photonics platform. We show linear phase and amplitude modulation with 6 V$_π$-cm in differential operation, -1.5 dB to -2 dB insertion loss, and up to 40 dB contrast in the 700 nm - 780 nm range. By adjusting selected cantilever parameters, we demonstrate a low-displacement and a high-displacement device, both exhibiting a nearly flat frequency response from DC to a peak mechanical resonance at 23 MHz and 6.8 MHz respectively, which through resonant enhancement of Q~40, further decreases the operating voltage down to 0.15 V$_π$-cm.

Self-organization in soliton modelocked parametric frequency combs

We show that self-organization occurs in the phase dynamics of soliton modelocking in paramet- ric frequency combs. Reduction of the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE) to a simpler set of phase equations reveals that this self-organization arises via mechanisms akin to those in the Kuramoto model for synchronization of coupled oscillators. In addition, our simulations show that the phase equations evolve to a broadband phase-locked state, analogous to the soliton formation process in the LLE. Our simplified equations intuitively explain the origin of the pump phase offset in soliton- modelocked parametric frequency combs. They also predict that the phase of the intracavity field undergoes an anti-symmetrization that precedes phase synchronization, and they clarify the role of chaotic states in soliton formation in parametric combs.

Octave-spanning frequency comb generation in a silicon nitride chip

We demonstrate a frequency comb spanning an octave via the parametric process of cascaded four-wave mixing in a monolithic, high-Q silicon nitride microring resonator. The comb is generated from a single-frequency pump laser at 1562 nm and spans 128 THz with a spacing of 226 GHz, which can be tuned slightly with the pump power. In addition, we investigate the RF-noise characteristics of the parametric comb and find that the comb can operate in a low-noise state with a 30-dB reduction in noise as the pump frequency is tuned into the cavity resonance.
