Magnetically driven loss of centrosymmetry in metallic Pb2CoOsO6

We report magnetic, transport, neutron diffraction, and muon spin rotation data showing that Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, a newly synthesized metallic double-perovskite with a centrosymmetric space group at room temperature, exhibits a continuous second-order phase transition at 45 K to a magnetically ordered state with a non-centrosymmetric space group. The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range collinear antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector $\textbf{k} = (\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$, which relieves the frustration associated with the symmetry of themagnetic exchanges. This magnetically-driven loss of inversion symmetry represents a new frontier in the search for novel metallic behavior.

The Spectral Energy Distributions of Fermi Blazars

(Abridged) In this paper, multi-wavelength data are compiled for a sample of 1425 Fermi blazars to calculate their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). A parabolic function, $\log(νF_ν) = P_1(\logν- P_2)^2 + P_3,$ is used for SED fitting. Synchrotron peak frequency ($\log ν_p$), spectral curvature ($P_1$), peak flux ($ν_{\rm p}F_{\rm ν_p}$), and integrated flux ($νF_ν$) are successfully obtained for 1392 blazars (461 flat spectrum radio quasars-FSRQs, 620 BL Lacs-BLs and 311 blazars of uncertain type-BCUs, 999 sources have known redshifts). Monochromatic luminosity at radio 1.4 GHz, optical R band, X-ray at 1 keV and $γ$-ray at 1 GeV, peak luminosity, integrated luminosity and effective spectral indexes of radio to optical ($α_{\rm RO}$), and optical to X-ray ($α_{\rm OX}$) are calculated. The "Bayesian classification" is employed to log$ν_{\rm p}$ in the rest frame for 999 blazars with available redshift and the results show that 3 components are enough to fit the $\logν_{\rm p}$ distribution, there is no ultra high peaked subclass. Based on the 3 components, the subclasses of blazars using the acronyms of Abdo et al. (2010a) are classified, and some mutual correlations are also studied. Conclusions are finally drawn as follows: (1) SEDs are successfully obtained for 1392 blazars. The fitted peak frequencies are compared with common sources from samples available (Sambruna et al. 1996, Nieppola et al. 2006, 2008, Abdo et al. 2010a). (2) Blazars are classified as low synchrotron peak sources (LSPs) if $\logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $\leq 14.0$, intermediate synchrotron peak sources (ISPs) if $14.0 < \logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $\leq 15.3$, and high synchrotron peak sources (HSPs) if $\logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $> 15.3$. (3) $γ$-ray emissions are strongly correlated with radio emissions. (...)

Optical Photometrical Observations and Variability for Quasar 4C 29.45

We reported the result of long term optical variability of the blazar 4C 29.45 (QSO 1156+295, Ton 599), carried out optical photometric observations in Johnson V, Cousins RI passbands during April 1997 to March 2002 using the 1.56 meter telescope of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) at Sheshan, China, compiled the post-1974 optical photometric data of the blazar by combining our new observations with the published optical data, and found maximum variations in different passbands: $Δ$U = 4.41 mag, $Δ$B = 5.55 mag, $Δ$V = 4.53 mag, $Δ$R = 5.80 mag, and $Δ$I = 5.34 mag. The average color indices are: U$-$B = $-0.54\pm$0.18 mag, B$-$V = 0.56$\pm$0.21 mag, B$-$R = 0.93$\pm$0.18 mag, B$-$I = 1.51$\pm$0.24 mag, V$-$R = 0.44$\pm$0.15 mag and V$-$I = 1.03$\pm$0.23 mag. The post-1974 data give us an excellent opportunity to search for the existence of possible periodicity in the light curve. In search for periodicity in the R passband light curve, we performed Jurkevich test and power spectral (Fourier) analysis methods, and CLEANest algorithms to remove false signals. We found possible periods of 3.55 and 1.58 years. The possible mechanism for the periodic variability was discussed.

On the study of neutrino properties

We review the discovery of the neutrino and outline the history of neutrino physics. Many interesting phenomena involving the neutrino are exhibited. We also discuss the long-standing solar neutrino puzzle and the properties of the neutrino which lead to various important results. We present a possible experimental test of the neutrino property. In addition, neutrino oscillation and neutrino spin precession are also demonstrated.
