Kondo scattering in underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer superconducting thin films

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates generates tremendous research endeavors, but the ground state of their parent compounds is still under debate. Here, we report experimental evidences for the dominant role of Kondo scattering in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films. A resistivity minimum associated with logarithmic temperature dependence in both longitudinal and Hall resistivities are observed in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 samples before the superconducting transition. A linear scaling behavior $σ_{xy}^{AHE}\simσ_{xx}$ between anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}^{AHE}$ and conductivity $σ_{xx}$ is revealed, verifying the dominant Kondo scattering at low temperature. The effect of weak (anti-)localization is found to be secondary. Our experiments can help clarifying the basic physics in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer thin films.

Hybridization dynamics in CeCoIn5 revealed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy

We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototype heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes hybridization fluctuations before full establishment of the heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from $\sim$120 K ($T^\dagger$) to $\sim$55 K ($T^*$ ). We reveal that the observed anomalous phonon softening and damping reduction below $T^*$ are directly associated with opening of an indirect hybridization gap. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of $\sim$8 meV, which may be the experimental evidence of the predicted unconventional density wave. Our observations provide critical informations for understanding the hybridization dynamics in heavy fermion materials.

Observation of Dirac-like band dispersion in LaAgSb$_2$

We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations study of the electronic structure of LaAgSb$_2$ in the entire first Brillouin zone. We observe a Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level formed by the crossing of two linear energy bands, as well as the nested segments of Fermi surface pocket emerging from the cone. Our ARPES results show the close relationship of the Dirac cone to the charge-density-wave ordering, providing consistent explanations for exotic behaviors in this material.

Long range order and two-fluid behavior in heavy electron materials

The heavy electron Kondo liquid is an emergent state of condensed matter that displays universal behavior independent of material details. Properties of the heavy electron liquid are best probed by NMR Knight shift measurements, which provide a direct measure of the behavior of the heavy electron liquid that emerges below the Kondo lattice coherence temperature as the lattice of local moments hybridizes with the background conduction electrons. Because the transfer of spectral weight between the localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom is gradual, the Kondo liquid typically coexists with the local moment component until the material orders at low temperatures. The two-fluid formula captures this behavior in a broad range of materials in the paramagnetic state. In order to investigate two-fluid behavior and the onset and physical origin of different long range ordered ground states in heavy electron materials, we have extended Knight shift measurements to URu$_2$Si$_2$, CeIrIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$. In CeRhIn$_5$ we find that the antiferromagnetic order is preceded by a relocalization of the Kondo liquid, providing independent evidence for a local moment origin of antiferromagnetism. In URu$_2$Si$_2$ the hidden order is shown to emerge directly from the Kondo liquid and so is not associated with local moment physics. Our results imply that the nature of the ground state is strongly coupled with the hybridization in the Kondo lattice in agreement with phase diagram proposed by Yang and Pines.

Dynamical mean field theory for manganites

Doped and undoped manganites are modeled by the coupling between itinerant $e_g$ electrons and static $t_{2g}$ spins, the Jahn-Teller and breathing phonon modes, and the Coulomb interaction. We provide for a careful estimate of all parameters and solve the corresponding Hamiltonian by dynamical mean field theory. Our results for the one-electron spectrum, the optical conductivity, the dynamic and static lattice distortion, as well as the Curie temperature show the importance of all of the above ingredients for a realistic calculation as well as for describing the unusual dynamical properties of manganites including the insulating parent compound and the insulating-like paramagnetic state of doped manganites.
