Scintillator Tile Batch Test of CEPC AHCAL

Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield uniform within 10\%. An automated batch test platform has been designed with 144 channels, an automated 3D servo motor. The paper summarizes the tests performed on more than 15000 scintillator tiles. The measured light yield, corrected for the set-up response non-uniformity, is around 12.9 p.e. . About 91.6\% of scintillators (14219 pieces) are qualified within 10\% of light yield window.

Testing the 10 spectrograph units for DESI: approach and results

The recently commissioned Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will measure the expansion history of the Universe using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation technique. The spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars over 14000 sqdeg will be measured during the life of the experiment. A new prime focus corrector for the KPNO Mayall telescope delivers light to 5000 fiber optic positioners. The fibers in turn feed ten broad-band spectrographs. A consortium of Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and CNRS laboratories (LAM, OHP and CPPM) together with LPNHE (CNRS, IN2P3, Sorbonne Université and Université de Paris) and the WINLIGHT Systems company based in Pertuis (France), were in charge of integrating and validating the performance requirements of the ten full spectrographs, equipped with their cryostats, shutters and other mechanisms. We present a summary of our activity which allowed an efficient validation of the systems in a short-time schedule. We detail the main results. We emphasize the benefits of our approach and also its limitations.

Symmetry breaking and phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Theoretical study is presented for a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, whose two components are coupled by copropagating Raman beams with different orbital angular momenta. The investigation is focused on the behavior of the ground state of this condensate, depending on the atom-light coupling strength. By analyzing the ground state, we have identified a number of quantum phases, which reflect the symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian and are characterized by the specific structure of the wave function. In addition to the well-known stripe, polarized and zero-momentum phases, our results show that the system can support phases, whose wave function contains a complex vortex molecule. Such molecule plays an important role in the continuous phase transitions of the system. The predicted behavior of vortex-molecule phases can be examined in cold-atom experiments using currently existing techniques.

A class of linear solvers built on the Biconjugate A-Orthonormalization Procedure for solving unsymmetric linear systems

We present economical iterative algorithms built on the Biconjugate $A$-Orthonormalization Procedure for real unsymmetric and complex non-Hermitian systems. The principal characteristics of the developed solvers is that they are fast convergent and cheap in memory. We report on a large combination of numerical experiments to demonstrate that the proposed family of methods is highly competitive and often superior to other popular algorithms built upon the Arnoldi method and the biconjugate Lanczos procedures for unsymmetric linear sytems.
