Horndeski Proca stars with vector hair

We study Proca stars in a vector-tensor gravity model inspired by Horndeski's generalized Einstein-Maxwell field equations, supplemented with a mass term for the vector field. We discuss the effects of the non-minimal coupling term on the properties of the resulting Proca stars. %and show that they can form vector hair. We show that the sign of the coupling constant is crucial in determining the generic properties of these generalized Proca star solutions, as soon as the magnitude of the coupling constant is sufficiently large to allow for significant deviations from the standard Proca star case. For negative coupling constant we observe a new type of limiting behavior for the generalized Proca stars, where the spacetime splits into an interior region with matter fields and an exterior Schwarzschild region.

Scalarized compact objects in a vector-tensor Horndeski gravity

We have discovered a new type of scalarized charged black holes in a surprisingly simple system: an Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon field theory where the three fields couple non-minimally through a Horndeski vector-tensor term. In addition to hairy charged black holes, this system exhibits Horndeski-Reissner-Nordstrom solutions and ordinary Reissner-Nordstrom ones which bifurcate to the scalarized solutions. There exist also vector-tensor black hole solutions which possess central curvature singularities although their metric components are finite there, and also solutions with naked singularities producing regular metric components everywhere around them. We analyze the solutions and present their main features.

Scalarized-charged wormholes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon Lagrangian is supplemented by a non-minimal coupling of the real scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The non minimal coupling function is chosen as a general second degree polynomial in the scalar field for which the system is known to admit hairy black holes. The new interaction leads naturally to a violation of the null energy condition, allowing for wormholes to exist without the need of exotic matter. Spherically symmetric, charged wormholes are constructed and their domain of existence is determined in terms of the different choices of the non-minimal coupling constants and of the electric charge. A special emphasis is set to the case of the purely quadratic coupling function. A phenomenon reminiscent to spontaneously scalarised black holes occurs for wormholes. The interaction with the electromagnetic field leads to new families of wormholes supported by a non-vanishing, large enough, electric charge.

Boson stars, neutron stars and black holes in five dimensions

Different types of gravitating compact objects occuring in d=5 space-time are considered: boson stars, hairy black holes and perfect fluid solutions. All these solutions of the Einstein equations coupled to matter have well established counterparts in d=4; in particular neutron stars can be modell§ed more or less realistically by a perfect fluid. A special emphasis is set on the possibility -and/or the necessity- for these solutions to have an intrinsic angular momentum or spin. The influence of a cosmological constant on their pattern is also studied. Several physical properties are presented from which common features to boson and neutron stars clearly emerge. We finally point out qualitative differences of the gravitational interaction supporting these classical lumps between four and five dimensions.

Black Holes with Scalar Hairs in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

The Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions is extended by scalar fields and the corresponding equations are reduced to a system of non-linear differential equations. A large family of regular solutions of these equations is shown to exist. Generically, these solutions are spinning black holes with scalar hairs. They can be characterized (but not uniquely) by an horizon and an angular velocity on this horizon. Taking particular limits the black holes approach boson star or become extremal, in any case the limiting configurations remain hairy.

Dirac equation for sphercially symmetric $AdS_5$ space-time and application to a boson star in EGB gravity

We discuss the Dirac equation in a curved 5-dimensional spherically symmetric space-time. The angular part of the solutions is thoroughly studied, in a formulation suited for extending to rotating space-times with equal angular momenta. It has a symmetry $SU(2)\times U(1)$ and is implemented by the Wigner functions. The radial part forms a Dirac-Schrödinger type equation, and existence of the analytical solutions of the massless and the massive modes is confirmed. The solutions are described by the Jacobi polynomials. Also, the spinor of the both large and small components is obtained numerically. As a direct application of our formulation, we evaluate the spectrum of the Dirac fermion in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet space-time and the space-time of a boson star.

Self-Gravitating Spherical Solutions of the non-minimally coupled non-Abelian Higgs Model

Motivated by the Higgs Inflation scenario, we study static spherically-symmetric solutions of the non-Abelian Higgs model coupled non-minimally to Gravity. We find solutions for the self-gravitating sphaleron as well as monopole-like solutions and study the impact of the non-minimal coupling on their properties. Finally we discuss shortly the possibility that these solutions interact gravitationally with star-like objects like boson stars.

Gravitating Q-tubes and cylindrical spacetime

We consider a model involving a self-interacting complex scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and emphasize the cylindrically symmetric classical solutions. A general ansatz is performed which transforms the field equations into a system of differential equations. In the generic case, the scalar field depends on the four space-time coordinates. The underlying Einstein vacuum equations are worth studying by themselve and lead to numerous analytic results extending the Kasner solutions. The solutions of the coupled system are -static as well as stationnary- gravitating Q-tubes of scalar matter which deform space-time.

A scalar field instability of rotating and charged black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time

We study the stability of static as well as of rotating and charged black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time which possess spherical horizon topology. We observe a non-linear instability related to the condensation of a charged, tachyonic scalar field and construct "hairy" black hole solutions of the full system of coupled Einstein, Maxwell and scalar field equations. We observe that the limiting solution for small horizon radius is either a hairy soliton solution or a singular solution that is not a regular extremal solution. Within the context of the gauge/gravity duality the condensation of the scalar field describes a holographic conductor/superconductor phase transition on the surface of a sphere.

Charged, rotating black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We consider the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations in five dimensions including a negative cosmological constant and a Maxwell field. Using an appropriate Ansatz for the metric and for the electromagnetic fields, we construct numerically black holes with two equal angular momenta in the two orthogonal space-like planes of space-time. Families of such solutions, labeled by the angular momentum and by the electric charge are obtained for many representative intervals of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. It is argued that, for fixed values of $α$, the solutions terminate into extremal black holes at ($α$-dependent) critical values of the angular momentum and/or of the electric charge. The influence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, of the charge and of the cosmological constant on the thermodynamics of the black holes and on their domain of existence is analyzed.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black strings

We construct uniform black-string solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity for all dimensions $d$ between five and ten and discuss their basic properties. Closed form solutions are found by taking the Gauss-Bonnet term as a perturbation from pure Einstein gravity. Nonperturbative solutions are constructed by solving numerically the equations of the model. The Gregory-Laflamme instability of the black strings is explored via linearized perturbation theory. Our results indicate that new qualitative features occur for $d=6$, in which case stable configurations exist for large enough values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. For other dimensions, the black strings are dynamically unstable and have also a negative specific heat. We argue that this provides an explicit realization of the Gubser-Mitra conjecture, which links local dynamical and thermodynamic stability. Nonuniform black strings in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory are also constructed in six spacetime dimensions.

Spherical Non-Abelian Solutions in Conformal Gravity

We study static spherically-symmetric solutions of non-Abelian gauge theory coupled to Conformal Gravity. We find solutions for the self-gravitating pure Yang-Mills case as well as monopole-like solutions of the Higgs system. The former are localized enough to have finite mass and approach asymptotically the vacuum geometry of Conformal Gravity, while the latter do not decay fast enough to have analogous properties.

Spherical Structures in Conformal Gravity and its Scalar-Tensor Extension

We study spherically-symmetric structures in Conformal Gravity and in a scalar-tensor extension and gain some more insight about these gravitational theories. In both cases we analyze solutions in two systems: perfect fluid solutions and boson stars of a self-interacting complex scalar field. In the purely tensorial (original) theory we find in a certain domain of parameter space finite mass solutions with a linear gravitational potential but without a Newtonian contribution. The scalar-tensor theory exhibits a very rich structure of solutions whose main properties are discussed. Among them, solutions with a finite radial extension, open solutions with a linear potential and logarithmic modifications and also a (scalar-tensor) gravitational soliton. This may also be viewed as a static self-gravitating boson star in purely tensorial Conformal Gravity.

QES systems, invariant spaces and polynomials recursions

Let us denote ${\cal V}$, the finite dimensional vector spaces of functions of the form $ψ(x) = p_n(x) + f(x) p_m(x)$ where $p_n(x)$ and $p_m(x)$ are arbitrary polynomials of degree at most $n$ and $m$ in the variable $x$ while $f(x)$ represents a fixed function of $x$. Conditions on $m,n$ and $f(x)$ are found such that families of linear differential operators exist which preserve ${\cal V}$. A special emphasis is accorded to the cases where the set of differential operators represents the envelopping algebra of some abstract algebra. These operators can be transformed into linear matrix valued differential operators. In the second part, such types of operators are considered and a connection is established between their solutions and series of polynomials-valued vectors obeying three terms recurence relations. When the operator is quasi exactly solvable, it possesses a finite dimensional invariant vector space. We study how this property leads to the truncation of the polynomials series.

Black strings in (4+1)-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

We study two classes of static uniform black string solutions in a (4+1)-dimensional SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills model. These configurations possess a regular event horizon and corresponds in a 4-dimensional picture to axially symmetric black hole solutions in an Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-U(1)-dilaton theory. In this approach, one set of solutions possesses a nonzero magnetic charge, while the other solutions represent black holes located in between a monopole-antimonopole pair. A detailed analysis of the solutions' properties is presented, the domain of existence of the black strings being determined. New four dimensional solutions are found by boosting the five dimensional configurations. We also present an argument for the non-existence of finite mass hyperspherically symmetric black holes in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory.

Particle-like solutions to higher order curvature Einstein--Yang-Mills systems in d dimensions

We consider the superposition of the first two members of the gravitational hierarchy (Einstein plus first Gauss-Bonnet(GB)) interacting with the superposition of the first two members of the $SO_{(\pm)}(d)$ Yang--Mills hierarchy, in $d$ dimensions. Such systems can occur in the low energy effective action of string theory. Particle-like solutions %for the systems with only an Einstein term, and with only a GB term, in dimensions $d=6,8$ are constructed respectively. Our results reveal qualitatively new properties featuring double-valued solutions with critical behaviour. In this preliminary study, we have restricted ourselves to one-node solutions.

Classical solutions in the Einstein-Born-Infeld-Abelian-Higgs model

We consider the classical equations of the Born-Infeld-Abelian-Higgs model (with and without coupling to gravity) in an axially symmetric ansatz. A numerical analysis of the equations reveals that the (gravitating) Nielsen-Olesen vortices are smoothly deformed by the Born-Infeld interaction, characterized by a coupling constant $β^2$, and that these solutions cease to exist at a critical value of $β^2$. When the critical value is approached, the length of the magnetic field on the symmetry axis becomes infinite.

Instantons in 4-dimensional gauged O(5) Skyrme models

We consider a family of four-dimensional non-linear sigma models based on an O(5) symmetric group, whose fields take their values on the 4-sphere S4. An SO(4)-subgroup of the model is gauged. The solutions of the model are characterised by two distinct topological charges, the Chern-Pontryagin charge of the gauge field and the degree of the map, i.e. the winding number, of the S4 field. The one dimensional equations arising from the variation of the action density subjected to spherical symmetry are integrated numerically. Several properties of the solutions thus constructed are pointed out. The only solution with unit Chern-Pontryagin charge are the usual BPST instantons with zero S4 winding number, while solutions with unit S4 winding number have zero Chern-Pontryagin charge.

Finite energy/action solutions of $p_1$ Yang-Mills equations on $p_2$ Schwarzschild and deSitter backgrounds for dimension $d \ge 4$

Physically relevant gauge and gravitational theories can be seen as special members of hierarchies of more elaborate systems. The Yang-Mills (YM) system is the first member of a hierarchy of Lagrangians which we will index by $p_1$, and the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) system of general relativity is the first member of another hierarchy which we index by $p_2$. In this paper, we study the classical equations of the $p_1 = 1,2$ YM hierarchy considered in the background of special geometries (Schwarzschild, deSitter,anti-deSitter) of the $p_2=1,2,3$ EH hierarchy. Solutions are obtained in various dimensions and lead to several examples of non-self-dual YM fields. When $p_1=p_2$ self-dual solutions exist in addition. Their action is equal to the Chern-Pontryagin charge and can be compared with that of the non-self-dual solutions.

Gravitating (bi-)sphalerons

The standard model of electroweak interactions is minimally coupled to gravity and the response of the spherically symmetric solutions -the sphaleron and the bisphaleron- to gravity is emphasized. For a given value of the Higgs mass $M_H$, several branches of solutions exist which terminate into cusp-catastrophy at some ($M_H$-depending) critical value of the parameter $α$ defined by the ratio of the vector-boson mass to the Planck mass. A given branch either bifurcates from another one at an intermediate value of $α$ or persists in the limit $α\to 0$ where it terminates into a flat sphaleron or bisphaleron or into a Bartnik-McKinnon solution. These bifurcation patterns are studied in some details.

Gravitating monopole and black holes at intermediate Higgs masses

Self-gravitating SU(2) Higgs magnetic monopoles exist up to a critical value of the ratio of the vector meson mass to the Planck mass, which depends on the Higgs boson mass. At the critical value a critical solution with a degenerate horizon is reached. As pointed out by Lue and Weinberg, there are two types of critical solutions, with a transition at an intermediate Higgs boson mass. Here we investigate this transition for black holes, and reconsider it for the case of gravitating monopoles.

Dyonic Non-Abelian Black Holes

We study static spherically symmetric dyonic black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. As for the magnetic non-abelian black holes, the domain of existence of the dyonic non-abelian black holes is limited with respect to the horizon radius and the dimensionless coupling constant $α$, which is proportional to the ratio of vector meson mass and Planck mass. At a certain critical value of this coupling constant, $\hat α$, the maximal horizon radius is attained. We derive analytically a relation between $\hat α$ and the charge of the black hole solutions and confirm this relation numerically. Besides the fundamental dyonic non-abelian black holes, we study radially excited dyonic non-abelian black holes and globally regular gravitating dyons.
