Fixed point indices and fixed words at infinity of selfmaps of graphs

Indices of fixed point classes play a central role in Nielsen fixed point theory. Jiang-Wang-Zhang proved that for selfmaps of graphs and surfaces, the index of any fixed point class has an upper bound called its characteristic. In this paper, we study the difference between the index and the characteristic for selfmaps of graphs. First, for free groups, we extend attracting fixed words at infinity of automorphisms into that of injective endomorphisms. Then, by using relative train track technique, we show that the difference mentioned above is quite likely to be the number of equivalence classes of attracting fixed words of the endomorphism induced on the fundamental group. Since both of attracting fixed words and the existed characteristic are totally determined by endomorphisms themselves, we give a new algebraic approach to estimate indices of fixed point classes of graph selfmaps. As consequence, we obtain an upper bound for attracting fixed words of injective endomorphisms of free groups, generalizing the one for automorphisms due to Gaboriau-Jaeger-Levitt-Lustig. Furthermore, we give a simple approach to roughly detecting whether fixed words exist or not.

Schubert presentation of the integral cohomology ring of the flag manifolds G/T

Let G be a compact connected Lie group with a maximal torus T\subsetG. In the context of Schubert calculus we obtain a canonical presentation for the integral cohomology ring H^{\ast}(G/T) of the complete flag manifold G/T. The result have been applied in [15] to construct the integral cohomology ring H^{\ast}(G) in terms of Schubert classes on G/T, and in [16] to determine the structure of the modp cohomology H^{\ast}(G;F_{p}) as a Hopf algebra over the Steenrod algebra.

Density of the homotopy minimal periods of maps on infra-solvmanifolds

We study the homotopical minimal periods for maps on infra-solvmanifolds of type (R) using the density of the homotopical minimal period set in the natural numbers. This extends the result of [10] from flat manifolds to infra-solvmanifolds of type (R). Applying our main result we will list all possible maps on infra-solvmanifolds up to dimension three for which the corresponding density is positive.

Schubert calculus and the Hopf algebra structures of exceptional Lie groups

Let G be an exceptional Lie group with a maximal torus T. Based on common properties in the Schubert presentation of the cohomology ring H*(G/T;F_{p}) DZ1, and concrete expressions of generalized Weyl invariants for G over F_{p}, we obtain a unified approach to the structure of H*(G;F_{p}) as a Hopf algebra over the Steenrod algebra A_{p}. The results has been applied in Du2 to determine the near--Hopf ring structure on the integral cohomology of all exceptional Lie groups.

The Chow rings of generalized Grassmannians

Based on the Basis theorem of Bruhat--Chevalley [C] and the formula for multiplying Schubert classes obtained in [D\QTR{group}{u}] and programed in [DZ$_{\QTR{group}{1}}$], we introduce a new method computing the Chow rings of flag varieties (resp. the integral cohomology of homogeneous spaces). The method and results of this paper have been extended in [DZ$_{3}$, DZ$_{4}$] to obtain the integral cohomology rings of all complete flag manifolds, and to construct the integral cohomologies of Lie groups in terms of Schubert classes.
