Decentralized Blockchain for Privacy-Preserving Large-Scale Contact Tracing

Activity-tracking applications and location-based services using short-range communication (SRC) techniques have been abruptly demanded in the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for automated contact tracing. The attention from both public and policy keeps raising on related practical problems, including \textit{1) how to protect data security and location privacy? 2) how to efficiently and dynamically deploy SRC Internet of Thing (IoT) witnesses to monitor large areas?} To answer these questions, in this paper, we propose a decentralized and permissionless blockchain protocol, named \textit{Bychain}. Specifically, 1) a privacy-preserving SRC protocol for activity-tracking and corresponding generalized block structure is developed, by connecting an interactive zero-knowledge proof protocol and the key escrow mechanism. As a result, connections between personal identity and the ownership of on-chain location information are decoupled. Meanwhile, the owner of the on-chain location data can still claim its ownership without revealing the private key to anyone else. 2) An artificial potential field-based incentive allocation mechanism is proposed to incentivize IoT witnesses to pursue the maximum monitoring coverage deployment. We implemented and evaluated the proposed blockchain protocol in the real-world using the Bluetooth 5.0. The storage, CPU utilization, power consumption, time delay, and security of each procedure and performance of activities are analyzed. The experiment and security analysis is shown to provide a real-world performance evaluation.

Fog Computing for Smart Grids: Challenges and Solutions

Smart grids (SGs) enable integration of diverse power sources including renewable energy resources. They can contribute to the reduction of harmful gas emission, and support two-way information flow to enhance energy efficiency, along with small-scale Microgrids, acting as a promising solution to cope with environmental problems. However, with the emerging of mission-critical and delay-sensitive applications, traditional Cloud-based data processing mode becomes less satisfying. The use of Fog computing to empower the edge-side processing capability of Smart grid systems is considered as a potential solution to address the problem. In this chapter, we aim to offer a comprehensive analysis of application of Fog computing in Smart grids. We begin with an overview of Smart grids and Fog computing. Then, by surveying the existing research, we summarize the main Fog computing enabled Smart grid applications, key problems and the possible methods. We conclude the chapter by discussing the research challenges and future directions.

A Time-constraint Satisfying and Cost-reducing node evaluation metric for Message Routing in Mobile Crowd Sensing Networks

In mobile crowd sensing networks data forwarding through opportunistic contacts between participants. Data is replicated to encountered participants. For optimizing data delivery ratio and reducing redundant data a lot of data forwarding schemes, which selectively replicate data to encountered participants through node's data forwarding metric are proposed. However most of them neglect a kind of redundant data whose Time-To-Live is expired. For reducing this kind of redundant data we proposed a new method to evaluate node's data forwarding metric, which is used to measure the node's probability of forwarding data to destination within data's constraint time. The method is divided into two parts. The first is evaluating nodes whether have possibility to contact destination within time constraint based on transient cluster. We propose a method to detect node's transient cluster, which is based on node's contact rate. Only node, which has possibility to contact destination, has chances to the second step. It effectively reduces the computational complexity. The second is calculating data forwarding probability of node to destination according to individual ICT (inter contact time) distribution. Evaluation results show that our proposed transient cluster detection method is more simple and quick. And from two aspects of data delivery ratio and network overhead our approach outperforms other existing data forwarding approach.
