$Herschel$ investigation of cores and filamentary structures in the Perseus molecular cloud

Cores and filamentary structures are the prime birthplaces of stars, and play key roles in the process of star formation. Latest advances in the methods of multi-scale source and filament extraction, and in making high-resolution column density map from $Herschel$ multi-wavelength observations enable us to detect the filamentary network structures in highly complex molecular cloud environments. The statistics for physical parameters shows that core mass strongly correlates with core dust temperature, and $M/L$ strongly correlates with $M/T$, which is in line with the prediction of the blackbody radiation, and can be used to trace evolutionary sequence from unbound starless cores to robust prestellar cores. Crest column densities of the filamentary structures are clearly related with mass per unit length ($M_{\rm line}$), but are uncorrelated by three orders ranging from $\sim 10^{20}$ to $\sim 10^{22}$ $ \rm cm^{-2}$ with widths. Full width at half maximum (FWHM) have a median value of 0.15 pc, which is consistent with the 0.1 pc typical inner width of the filamentary structures reported by previous research. We find $\sim $70\% of robust prestellar cores (135/199) embedded in supercritical filaments with $M_{\rm line}>16~M_{\odot}/{\rm pc}$, which implies that the gravitationally bound cores come from fragmentation of supercritical filaments. And on the basis of observational evidences that probability distribution function (PDF) with power-law distribution in the Perseus south is flatter than north, YSO number is significantly less than that in the north, and dust temperature difference. We infer that south region is more gravitationally bound than north region.

Functional Limit Theorems for Volterra Processes and Applications to Homogenization

We prove an enhanced limit theorem for additive functionals of a multi-dimensional Volterra process $(y_t)_{t\geq 0}$ in the rough path topology. As an application, we establish weak convergence as $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the solution of the random ordinary differential equation (ODE) $\frac{d}{dt}x^\varepsilon_t=\frac{1}{\sqrt \varepsilon} f(x_t^\varepsilon,y_{\frac{t}{\varepsilon}})$ and show that its limit solves a rough differential equation driven by a Gaussian field with a drift coming from the Lévy area correction of the limiting rough driver. Furthermore, we prove that the stochastic flows of the random ODE converge to those of the Kunita type Itô SDE $dx_t=G(x_t,dt)$, where $G(x,t)$ is a semi-martingale with spatial parameters.

Diffusive and rough homogenisation in fractional noise field

With recently developed tools, we prove a homogenisation theorem for a random ODE with short and long-range dependent fractional noise. The effective dynamics are not necessarily diffusions, they are given by stochastic differential equations driven simultaneously by stochastic processes from both the Gaussian and the non-Gaussian self-similarity universality classes. A key lemma for this is the `lifted' joint functional central and non-central limit theorem in the rough path topology.

Hessian formulas and estimates for parabolic Schrödinger operators

We study the Hessian of the fundamental solution to the parabolic problem for weighted Schrödinger operators of the form $\frac 12 Δ+\nabla h-V$ proving a second order Feynman-Kac formula and obtaining Hessian estimates. For manifolds with a pole, we use the Jacobian determinant of the exponential map to offset the volume growth of the Riemannian measure and use the semi-classical bridge as a delta measure at $y_0$ to obtain exact Gaussian estimates. These estimates are in terms of bounds on $Ric-2 Hess (h)$, on the curvature operator, and on the cyclic sum of the gradient of the Ricci tensor.

Random perturbation to the geodesic equation

We study random "perturbation" to the geodesic equation. The geodesic equation is identified with a canonical differential equation on the orthonormal frame bundle driven by a horizontal vector field of norm $1$. We prove that the projections of the solutions to the perturbed equations, converge, after suitable rescaling, to a Brownian motion scaled by ${\frac{8}{n(n-1)}}$ where $n$ is the dimension of the state space. Their horizontal lifts to the orthonormal frame bundle converge also, to a scaled horizontal Brownian motion.

Strong completeness for a class of stochastic differential equations with irregular coefficients

We prove the strong completeness for a class of non-degenerate SDEs, whose coefficients are not necessarily uniformly elliptic nor locally Lipschitz continuous nor bounded. Moreover, for each $t$, the solution flow $F_t$ is weakly differentiable and for each $p>0$ there is a positive number $T(p)$ such that for all $t<T(p)$, the solution flow $F_t(\cdot)$ belongs to the Sobolev space $W_{\loc}^{1,p}$. The main tool for this is the approximation of the associated derivative flow equations. As an application a differential formula is also obtained.

Effective Diffusions with Intertwined Structures

Let p:N->M be a surjective map of smooth manifolds. We are concerned with singular perturbation problems associated to a pair of second order positive definite differential operators with no zero order terms, that are intertwined by p. We discuss the associated random perturbations of stochastic differential equations and present a number of examples including perturbation to geodesic flows and construction of a Brownian motion on S^2 through homogenisation of SDE's on the Hopf fibration.

An approximation scheme for SDEs with non-smooth coefficients

Elliptic stochastic differential equations (SDE) make sense when the coefficients are only continuous. We study the corresponding linearized SDE whose coefficients are not assumed to be locally bounded. This leads to existence of $W_{\loc}^{1,p}$ solution flows for elliptic SDEs with Hölder continuous and $\cap_{p} W_{\loc}^{1,p}$ coefficients. Furthermore an approximation scheme is studied from which we obtain a representation for the derivative of the Markov semigroup, and an integration by parts formula.

A Concrete Estimate For The Weak Poincare Inequality On Loop Space

The aim of the paper is to study the pinned Wiener measure on the loop space over a simply connected compact Riemannian manifold together with the Hilbert space structure induced by Mallianvin calculus and the induced Ornstein- Uhlenbeck operator. We give a concrete estimate for the weak Poincare inequality for the O-U Dirichlet form on loop space over simply connected compact Riemannian manifold with strict positive Ricci curvature.

A Poincaré Inequality on Loop Spaces

We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the $L^2$ variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous $H^1$ norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross that the homogeneous $H^1$ norm alone may not control the $L^2$ norm and a potential term involving the end value of the Brownian bridge is introduced. Aida, on the other hand, introduced a weight on the Dirichlet form. We show that Aida's modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies weak Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities with precise estimates on the order of convergence. The order of convergence in the weak Sobolev inequalities are related to weak $L^1$ estimates on the weight function. This and a relation between Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities lead to a Poincaré inequality on the loop space over certain manifolds.

Lack of strong completeness for stochastic flows

It is well-known that a stochastic differential equation (SDE) on a Euclidean space driven by a Brownian motion with Lipschitz coefficients generates a stochastic flow of homeomorphisms. When the coefficients are only locally Lipschitz, then a maximal continuous flow still exists but explosion in finite time may occur. If -- in addition -- the coefficients grow at most linearly, then this flow has the property that for each fixed initial condition $x$, the solution exists for all times almost surely. If the exceptional set of measure zero can be chosen independently $x$, then the maximal flow is called {\em strongly complete}. The question, whether an SDE with locally Lipschitz continuous coefficients satisfying a linear growth condition is strongly complete was open for many years. In this paper, we construct a 2-dimensional SDE with coefficients which are even bounded (and smooth) and which is {\em not} strongly complete thus answering the question in the negative.

The Geometry of Filtering

Geometry arising from two diffusion operators (smooth semi-elliptic, second order differential operators) on different spaces but intertwined by a smooth map is described. Particular cases arise from Riemannian submersions when the operators are Laplace-Beltrami operators, from equivariant operators on the total space of a principal bundle, and for the operators on the diffeomorphism group arising from stochastic flows. Classical non-linear filtering problems also lead to such conffigurations. A basic tool is the, possibly, non-linear "semi-connection" induced by this set up, leading to a canonical decomposition of the operator on the domain space. Topics discussed include: generalised Wietzenbock curvatures arising in the equivariant case, skew -product decompositions of diffusion processes, conditioned processes, classical filtering, decomposition of stochastic flows, and connections determined by stochastic differential equations.

An L2 theory for differential forms on path spaces I

An L2 theory of differential forms is proposed for the Banach manifold of continuous paths on Riemannian manifolds M furnished with its Brownian motion measure. Differentiation must be restricted to certain Hilbert space directions, the H-tangent vectors. To obtain a closed exterior differential operator the relevant spaces of differential forms, the H-forms, are perturbed by the curvature of M. A Hodge decomposition is given for L2 H-one-forms, and the structure of H-two -forms is described. The dual operator d* is analysed in terms of a natural connection on the H-tangent spaces. Malliavin calculus is a basic tool.

Ito maps and analysis on path spaces

We consider versions of Malliavin calculus on path spaces of compact manifolds with diffusion measures, defining Gross-Sobolev spaces of differentiable functions and proving their intertwining with solution maps, I, of certain stochastic differential equations. This is shown to shed light on fundamental uniqueness questions for this calculus including uniqueness of the closed derivative operator $d$ and Markov uniqueness of the associated Dirichlet form. A continuity result for the divergence operator by Kree and Kree is extended to this situation. The regularity of conditional expectations of smooth functionals of classical Wiener space, given I, is considered and shown to have strong implications for these questions. A major role is played by the (possibly sub-Riemannian) connections induced by stochastic differential equations: Damped Markovian connections are used for the covariant derivatives.

Bounded and $L^2$ Harmonic Forms on Universal Covers

We relate the positivity of the curvature term in the Weitzenbock formula for the Laplacian on p-forms on a complete manifold to the existence of bounded and $L^2$ harmonic forms. In the case where the manifold is the universal cover of a compact manifold, we obtain topological and geometric information about the compact manifold. For example, we show that a compact manifold cannot admit one metric with pinched negative curvature and another metric with positive Weitzenbock term on two-forms. Many of these results can be thought of as differential form analogues of Myers' theorem. We also give pinching conditions on certain sums of sectional curvatures which imply the positivity of the curvature term, and hence yield vanishing theorems. In particular, we construct a compact manifold with planes of negative sectional curvature at each point and which satisfies the hypothesis of our vanishing theorems.
