Metalenses with polarization-independent adaptive nano-antennas

Metalens research has made major advances in recent years. These advances rely on the simple design principle of arranging meta-atoms in regular arrays to create an arbitrary phase and polarization profile. Unfortunately, the concept of equally spaced meta-atoms reaches its limit for high deflection angles where the deflection efficiency decreases. The efficiency can be increased using nano-antennas with multiple elements, but their polarization sensitivity hinders their application in metalenses. Here, we show that by designing polarization-insensitive dimer nano-antennas and abandoning the principle of equally spaced unit cells, polarization-independent ultrahigh numerical aperture (NA=1.48) oil-immersion operation with an efficiency of 43% can be demonstrated. This represents a significant improvement on other polarization-independent designs at visible wavelength. We also use this single layer metalens to replace a conventional objective lens and demonstrate the confocal scanning microscopic imaging of a grating with a period of 300 nm at 532 nm operating wavelength. Overall, our results experimentally demonstrate a novel design concept that further improves metalens performance.

A highly efficient integrated source of twisted single-photons

Photons with a helical phase front (twisted photons) can carry a discrete, in principle, unbounded amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Twisted single-photons have been demonstrated as a high-dimensional quantum system with information processing ability far beyond the widely used two-level qubits. To date, the generations of single-photons carrying OAM merely rely on the non-linear process in bulk crystals, e.g., spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), which unavoidably limits both the efficiency and the scalability of the source. Therefore, an on-demand OAM quantum light source on a semiconductor chip is yet illusive and highly desirable for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate highly-efficient emission of twisted single-photons from solid-state quantum emitters embedded in a microring with angular gratings. The cavity QED effect allows the generations of single-photons and encoding OAM in the same nanostructure and therefore enables the realization of devices with very small footprints and great scalability. The OAM states of singe-photons are clearly identified via quantum interference of single-photons with themselves. Our device may boost the development of integrated quantum photonic devices with potential applications towards high-dimensional quantum information processing.

Giant nonlinear response of 2D materials induced by optimal field-enhancement gain mode in hyperbolic meta-structure

Resonant modes in metamaterials have been widely utilized to amplify the optical response of 2D materials for practical device applications. However, the high loss at the resonant mode severely hinders metamaterial applications. Here, we introduce a field-enhancement gain (FEG) factor to find the FEG mode for significantly improving light-matter interaction. As a demonstration, we experimentally compared the second harmonic generation enhancement of monolayer MoS2 induced by the optimal FEG and resonant modes in hyperbolic meta-structures. With the optimal FEG mode, we obtained an enhancement of 22145-fold and a conversion efficiency of 1.1*10-6 W-1, which are respectively one and two orders of magnitude higher than that previously reported of monolayer MoS2. A broadband high-FEG region over ~80 nm where the nonlinear enhancement is larger than that induced by the resonant mode is achieved. The concept of FEG factor is general to metamaterials, opening a new way for advancing their applications.

Ab-initio Mapping of Projected Local Density of States in Arbitrary Nanostructures: Application to Photonic Crystal Slabs and Cavities

Based upon projected local density of states (PLDOS) for photons, we develop a local coupling theory to simultaneously treat the weak and strong interaction between a quantum emitter and photons in arbitrary nanostructures. The PLDOS is mapped by an extremely flexible and efficient method. The recent experiment observation for the photonic crystal slabs is very well interpreted by our ab-initio PLDOS. More importantly, a bridge linking the PLDOS and cavity quantum electrodynamics is for the first time established to settle quality factor, g factor and vacuum Rabi splitting. Our work greatly enriches the knowledge about the interaction between light and matter in nanostructures.

Dipole-Dipole interaction in photonic crystal nanocavity

Dipole-dipole interaction between two two-level `atoms' in photonic crystal nanocavity is investigated based on finite-difference time domain algorithm. This method includes both real and virtual photon effects and can be applied for dipoles with different transition frequencies in both weak and strong coupling regimes. Numerical validations have been made for dipoles in vacuum and in an ideal planar microcavity. For dipoles located in photonic crystal nanocavity, it is found that the cooperative decay parameters and the dipole-dipole interaction potential strongly depend on the following four factors: the atomic position, the atomic transition frequency, the resonance frequency, and the cavity quality factor. Properly arranging the positions of the two atoms, we can acquire equal value of the cooperative decay parameters and the local coupling strength. Large cooperative decay parameters can be achieved when transition frequency is equal to the resonance frequency. For transition frequency varying in a domain of the cavity linewidth around the resonance frequency, dipole-dipole interaction potential changes continuously from attractive to repulsive case. Larger value and sharper change of cooperative parameters and dipole-dipole interaction can be obtained for higher quality factor. Our results provide some manipulative approaches for dipole-dipole interaction with potential application in various fields such as quantum computation and quantum information processing based on solid state nanocavity and quantum dot system.
