Segmental Advantage Estimation: Enhancing PPO for Long-Context LLM Training

Training Large Language Models (LLMs) for reasoning tasks is increasingly driven by Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR), where Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) provides a principled framework for stable policy updates. However, the practical application of PPO is hindered by unreliable advantage estimation in the sparse-reward RLVR regime. This issue arises because the sparse rewards in RLVR lead to inaccurate intermediate value predictions, which in turn introduce significant bias when aggregated at every token by Generalized Advantage Estimation (GAE). To address this, we introduce Segmental Advantage Estimation (SAE), which mitigates the bias that GAE can incur in RLVR. Our key insight is that aggregating $n$-step advantages at every token(as in GAE) is unnecessary and often introduces excessive bias, since individual tokens carry minimal information. Instead, SAE first partitions the generated sequence into coherent sub-segments using low-probability tokens as heuristic boundaries. It then selectively computes variance-reduced advantage estimates only from these information-rich segment transitions, effectively filtering out noise from intermediate tokens. Our experiments demonstrate that SAE achieves superior performance, with marked improvements in final scores, training stability, and sample efficiency. These gains are shown to be consistent across multiple model sizes, and a correlation analysis confirms that our proposed advantage estimator achieves a higher correlation with an approximate ground-truth advantage, justifying its superior performance.

Generative Hypergraph Models and Spectral Embedding

Many complex systems involve interactions between more than two agents. Hypergraphs capture these higher-order interactions through hyperedges that may link more than two nodes. We consider the problem of embedding a hypergraph into low-dimensional Euclidean space so that most interactions are short-range. This embedding is relevant to many follow-on tasks, such as node reordering, clustering, and visualization. We focus on two spectral embedding algorithms customized to hypergraphs which recover linear and periodic structures respectively. In the periodic case, nodes are positioned on the unit circle. We show that the two spectral hypergraph embedding algorithms are associated with a new class of generative hypergraph models. These models generate hyperedges according to node positions in the embedded space and encourage short-range connections. They allow us to quantify the relative presence of periodic and linear structures in the data through maximum likelihood. They also improve the interpretability of node embedding and provide a metric for hyperedge prediction. We demonstrate the hypergraph embedding and follow-on tasks -- including structure quantification, clustering and hyperedge prediction -- on synthetic and real-world hypergraphs. We find that the hypergraph approach can outperform clustering algorithms that use only dyadic edges. We also compare several triadic edge prediction methods on high school contact data where our algorithm improves upon benchmark methods when the amount of training data is limited.

Search for $W^\prime$ signal via $tW^\prime$ associated production at LHC

A variety of new physics models predict the existence of extra charged gauge bosons ($W^\prime$). It is verified that $W^\prime$ and top quark associated production is a promising process to search for $W^\prime$ signal at the LHC. We study the collider signatures of multi-jets$+$lepton$+\met$ by reconstructing the $tW'$ intermediate state through the decay modes of $W^\prime \to tb$, $W^\prime \to q \bar q'$ and $W^\prime \to l ν$ respectively. An angular distribution related to charged lepton and top quark moving direction is provided to distinguish alternative left-handed or right-handed chiral couplings of $W^\prime$ to quarks in the hadronic decay modes. The superiority on the search of $W^\prime$ is demonstrated in the leptonic decay channel for the left-handed type interaction, which is forbidden for the right-handed type interaction in the most theories. To be more realistic, the relevant standard model backgrounds are simulated. We adopt various kinematic cuts to suppress the backgrounds and collect the integral luminosity needed for the corresponding process detected at the LHC with $3σ$ sensitivity. We also provide a forward-backward asymmetry which is related to the chirality of $W^\prime$. The successive studies can shed light on the potential searching for $W^\prime$ signal as well as distinguishing typical new physics models.

Fourth generation Majorana neutrino, dark matter and Higgs physics

We consider extensions of the standard model with fourth generation fermions (SM4) in which extra symmetries are introduced such that the transitions between the fourth generation fermions and the ones in the first three generations are forbidden. In these models, the stringent lower bounds on the masses of fourth generation quarks from direct searches are relaxed, and the lightest fourth neutrino is allowed to be stable and light enough to trigger the Higgs boson invisible decay. In addition, the fourth Majorana neutrino can be a subdominant but highly detectable dark matter component. We perform a global analysis of the current LHC data on the Higgs production and decay in this type of SM4. The results show that the mass of the lightest fourth Majorana neutrino is confined in the range $\sim 41-59$ GeV. Within the allowed parameter space, the predicted effective cross-section for spin-independent DM-nucleus scattering is $\sim 3\times 10^{-48}-6\times 10^{-46} \text{cm}^{2}$, which is close to the current Xenon100 upper limit and is within the reach of the Xenon1T experiment in the near future. The predicted spin-dependent cross sections can also reach $\sim 8\times 10^{-40}\text{cm}^{2}$.

Top quark spin and $Htb$ interaction in charged Higgs and top quark associated production at LHC

We study the charged Higgs production at LHC via its associated production with top quark. The kinematic cuts are optimized to suppress the background processes so that the reconstruction of the charged Higgs and top quark is possible. The angular distributions with respect to top quark spin are explored to study the $Htb$ interaction at LHC.

Identify Charged Higgs Boson in $W^\pm H^\mp$ Associated Production at LHC

We investigate the possibility to discover the charged Higgs via $pp\to W^{\pm}H^{\mp}\to l+\met+b\bar{b}jj$ process at LHC, which suffers from large QCD backgrounds. We optimize the kinematic cuts to suppress the backgrounds, so that the reconstruction of the charged Higgs through hadronic decay is possible. The angular distribution of the b-jet from $H^{\pm}$ decay is investigated as a way to identify the charged scalar from vector bosons.
