Two-Dimensional Rare Earth -- Gold Intermetallic Compounds on Au(111) by Surface Alloying

Surface alloying is a straightforward route to control and modify the structure and electronic properties of surfaces. Here, We present a systematical study on the structural and electronic properties of three novel rare earth-based intermetallic compounds, namely ReAu2 (Re = Tb, Ho, and Er), on Au(111) via directly depositing rare-earth metals onto the hot Au(111) surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements reveal the very similar atomic structures and electronic properties, e.g. electronic states, and surface work functions, for all these intermetallic compound systems due to the physical and chemical similarities between these rare earth elements. Further, these electronic properties are periodically modulated by the moiré structures caused by the lattice mismatches between ReAu2 and Au(111). These periodically modulated surfaces could serve as templates for the self-assembly of nanostructures. Besides, these two-dimensional rare earth-based intermetallic compounds provide platforms to investigate the rare earth related catalysis, magnetisms, etc., in the lower dimensions.

Half-filled intermediate bands Si material formed by energetically metastable interstitial sulfur atom

Hyperdoped metastable sulfur atoms endow crystalline silicon with a strong sub-bandgap light absorption. In order to explore such metastable states, we develop a new high-throughput first-principles calculation method to search for all of the energetically metastable states for an interstitial sulfur atom inside crystalline silicon. Finally, we obtain sixty-three metastable interstitial states and they can be classified into ten types. Interestingly, twenty-eight (44% in total) of lower-energy metastable states can produce a well-isolated and half-filled intermediate band (IB) inside silicon forbidden gap, which makes sulfur hyperdoped silicon to be a desirable material for IB solar cells.

Nearly Free Electron States in Graphene Nanoribbon Superlattices

Nearly free electron (NFE) state is an important kind of unoccupied state in low dimensional systems. Although it is intensively studied, a clear picture on its physical origin and its response behavior to external perturbations is still not available. Our systematic first-principles study based on graphene nanoribbon superlattices suggests that there are actually two kinds of NFE states, which can be understood by a simple Kronig-Penney potential model. An atom-scattering-free NFE transport channel can be obtained via electron doping, which may be used as a conceptually new field effect transistor.
