Magnetic molecule tunnel heterojunctions

We characterize molecular magnet heterojunctions in which sublimated CoPc films as thin as 5 nm are sandwiched between transparent conducting bottom-layer indium tin oxide and top-layer soft-landing eutectic GaIn (EGaIn) electrodes. The roughness of the cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) films was determined by atomic force microscopy to be on the order of several nanometers, and crystalline ordering of lying-down planar molecules was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics reveal the onset of a superconducting gap at Tc = 6 K, which together with higher temperature fits to a modified Simmons' model, provide incontrovertible evidence for direct quantum mechanical tunneling processes through the magnetic molecules in our heterojunctions. The voltage dependent features in the differential conductance measurements relate to spin states of single molecules or aggregates of molecules and should prove to be important for quantum information device development.

Textured organic ferroelectric films from physical vapor deposition and amorphous-to-crystalline transition

Crystallization is a key for ferroelectricity which is a collective behavior of microscopic electric dipoles. On the other hand, uncontrolled crystallization leads to uneven morphology and random crystal orientations, which undermines the application potential of ferroelectric thin films. In this work, we introduce a film fabrication method of low-temperature physical vapor deposition followed by restrained crystallization, with electrical properties monitored in real-time by in situ measurements. This method was adopted to fabricate films of 2-methylbenzimidazole (MBI), whose molecule crystals are proton-transfer type biaxial ferroelectrics and tend to grow into a hedgehog-shaped spherulites morphology. The in situ measurements confirm that the crystallization, corresponding to a clear transition of physical properties, occurs dominantly during post-deposition warming. This enables the fabrication of micron-thick films in disk-shaped morphology with one polarization axis aligned along the out-of-plane direction, while the measured spontaneous polarization and coercive field are comparable to the single-crystal values. These results mark an important advancement of film growth that is expected to benefit widely the fabrication of molecular materials films whose functional properties hinge on crystallization to achieve desirable morphology and crystallinity.

Probe Ferroelectricity by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in Molecular Crystal

We carry out X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment at oxygen K-edge in croconic acid (C5H2O5) crystal as a prototype of ferroelectric organic molecular solid, whose electric polarization is generated by proton transfer. The experimental spectrum is well reproduced by the electron-hole excitation theory simulations from configuration generated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. When inversion symmetry is broken in ferroelectric state, the hydrogen bonding environment on the two bonded molecules become inequivalent. Such a difference is sensitively probed by the bound excitation in the pre-edge, which are strongly localized on the excited molecules. Our analysis shows that a satellite peak in the pre-edge will emerge at higher excitation energy which serves as a clear signature of ferroelectricity in the material.

On the Structural Origin of the Single-ion Magnetic Anisotropy in LuFeO3

Electronic structures for the conduction bands of both hexagonal and orthorhombic LuFeO3 thin films have been measured using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at oxygen K (O K) edge. Dramatic differences in both the spectra shape and the linear dichroism are observed. These differences in the spectra can be explained using the differences in crystal field splitting of the metal (Fe and Lu) electronic states and the differences in O 2p-Fe 3d and O 2p-Lu 5d hybridizations. While the oxidation states has not changed, the spectra are sensitive to the changes in the local environments of the Fe3+ and Lu3+ sites in the hexagonal and orthorhombic structures. Using the crystal-field splitting and the hybridizations that are extracted from the measured electronic structures and the structural distortion information, we derived the occupancies of the spin minority states in Fe3+, which are non-zero and uneven. The single ion anisotropy on Fe3+ sites is found to originate from these uneven occupancies of the spin minority states via spin-orbit coupling in LuFeO3.

Room Temperature Ferroelectricity in Continuous Croconic Acid Thin Films

Ferroelectricity at room temperature has been demonstrated in nanometer-thin quasi 2D croconic acid thin films, by the polarization hysteresis loop measurements in macroscopic capacitor geometry, along with observation and manipulation of the nanoscale domain structure by piezoresponse force microscopy. The fabrication of continuous thin films of the hydrogen-bonded croconic acid was achieved by the suppression of the thermal decomposition using low evaporation temperatures in high vacuum, combined with growth conditions far from thermal equilibrium. For nominal coverages >=20 nm, quasi 2D and polycrystalline films, with an average grain size of 50-100 nm and 3.5 nm roughness, can be obtained. Spontaneous ferroelectric domain structures of the thin films have been observed and appear to correlate with the grain patterns. The application of this solvent-free growth protocol may be a key to the development of flexible organic ferroelectric thin films for electronic applications.
