Minimum and extremal process for a branching random walk outside the boundary case

This work extends the studies on the minimum and extremal process of a supercritical branching random walk outside the boundary case which cannot be reduced to the boundary case. We study here the situation where the log-generating function explodes at $1$ and the random walk associated to the spine possesses a stretched exponential tail with exponent $b\in(0,\frac12)$. Under suitable conditions, we confirm the conjecture of Barral, Hu and Madaule [Bernoulli 24(2) 2018 801-841], and obtain the weak convergence for the minimum and the extremal process. We also establish an a.s. infimum result over all infinity rays of this system.

Yaglom theorem for critical branching random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$

We study the critical branching random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ started from a distant point $x$ and conditioned to hit some compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We are interested in the occupation time in $K$ and present its asymptotic behaviors in different dimensions. It is shown in this work that the occupation time is of order $\|x\|^{4-d}$ in dimensions $d\leq 3$, of order $\log\|x\|$ in dimension $d=4$, and of order 1 in dimensions $d\geq 5$. The corresponding weak convergences are also established. These results answer a question raised by Le Gall and Merle (Elect. Comm. in Probab. 11 (2006), 252-265).

Nanoparticles Passive Targeting Allows Optical Imaging of Bone Diseases

Bone health related skeletal disorders are commonly diagnosed by X-ray imaging, but the radiation limits its use. Light excitation and optical imaging through the near-infrared-II window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) can penetrate deep tissues without radiation risk, but the targeting of contrast agent is non-specific. Here, we report that lanthanide-doped nanocrystals can be passively transported by endothelial cells and macrophages from the blood vessels into bone marrow microenvironment. We found that this passive targeting scheme can be effective for longer than two months. We therefore developed an intravital 3D and high-resolution planar imaging instrumentation for bone disease diagnosis. We demonstrated the regular monitoring of 1 mm bone defects for over 10 days, with resolution similar to X-ray imaging result, but more flexible use in prognosis. Moreover, the passive targeting can be used to reveal the early onset inflammation at the joints as the synovitis in the early stage of rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, the proposed method is comparable to μCT in recognizing symptoms of osteoarthritis, including the mild hyperostosis in femur which is ~100 μm thicker than normal, and the growth of millimeter-scale osteophyte in the knee joint, which further proves the power and universality of our approach in diagnosis of bone diseases

Branching Brownian motion conditioned on small maximum

We consider a standard binary branching Brownian motion on the real line. It is known that the maximal position $M_t$ among all particles alive at time $t$, shifted by $m_t = \sqrt{2} t - \frac{3}{2\sqrt{2}} \log t$ converges in law to a randomly shifted Gumbel variable. Derrida and Shi (2017) conjectured the precise asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding lower deviation probability $\mathbb{P}(M_t \leq \sqrt{2}αt)$ for $α< 1$. We verify their conjecture, and describe the law of the branching Brownian motion conditioned on having a small maximum.

Long Brownian bridges in hyperbolic spaces converge to Brownian trees

We show that the range of a long Brownian bridge in the hyperbolic space converges after suitable renormalisation to the Brownian continuum random tree. This result is a relatively elementary consequence of $\bullet$ A theorem by Bougerol and Jeulin, stating that the rescaled radial process converges to the normalized Brownian excursion, $\bullet$ A property of invariance under re-rooting, $\bullet$ The hyperbolicity of the ambient space in the sense of Gromov. A similar result is obtained for the rescaled infinite Brownian loop in hyperbolic space.

Range and critical generations of a random walk on Galton-Watson trees

In this paper we consider a random walk in random environment on a tree and focus on the boundary case for the underlying branching potential. We study the range $R\_n$ of this walk up to time $n$ and obtain its correct asymptotic in probability which is of order $n/\log n$. Thisresult is a consequence of the asymptotical behavior of the number of visited sites at generations of order $(\log n)^2$,which turn out to be the most visited generations. Our proof which involves a quenched analysisgives a description of the typical environments responsible for the behavior of $R\_n$.

Speed of Vertex reinforced jump process on Galton-Watson trees

We give an alternative proof of the fact that the vertex reinforced jump process on Galton- Watson tree has a phase transition between recurrence and transience as a function of c, the initial local time, see [3]. Further, applying the techniques in [1], we show a phase transition between positive speed and null speed for the discrete time process associated in the transient regime.

A necessary and sufficient condition for the non-trivial limit of the derivative martingale in a branching random walk

We consider a branching random walk on the line. Biggins and Kyprianou [6] proved that, in the boundary case, the associated derivative martingale converges almost surly to a finite nonnegative limit, whose law serves as a fixed point of a smoothing transformation (Mandelbrot's cascade). In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-triviality of this limit and establish a Kesten-Stigum-like result.

Increasing paths on N-ary trees

Consider a rooted $N$-ary tree. To every vertex of this tree, we attach an i.i.d. continuous random variable. A vertex is called accessible if along its ancestral line, the attached random variables are increasing. We keep accessible vertices and kill all the others. For any positive constant $α$, we describe the asymptotic behaviors of the population at the $αN$-th generation as $N$ goes to infinity. We also study the criticality of the survival probability at the $(eN-\frac{3}{2}\log N)$-th generation in this paper.

Scaling limit of the path leading to the leftmost particle in a branching random walk

We consider a discrete-time branching random walk defined on the real line, which is assumed to be supercritical and in the boundary case. It is known that its leftmost position of the $n$-th generation behaves asymptotically like $\frac{3}{2}\ln n$, provided the non-extinction of the system. The main goal of this paper, is to prove that the path from the root to the leftmost particle, after a suitable normalizatoin, converges weakly to a Brownian excursion in $D([0,1],\r)$.

Waiting times for particles in a branching Brownian motion to reach the rightmost position

It has been proved by Lalley and Sellke [13] that every particle born in a branching Brownian motion has a descendant reaching the rightmost position at some future time. The main goal of the present paper is to estimate asymptotically as s goes to infinity, the first time that every particle alive at the time s has a descendant reaching the rightmost position.
