An attention mechanism based convolutional network for satellite precipitation downscaling over China

Precipitation is a key part of hydrological circulation and is a sensitive indicator of climate change. The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission (IMERG) datasets are widely used for global and regional precipitation investigations. However, their local application is limited by the relatively coarse spatial resolution. Therefore, in this paper, an attention mechanism based convolutional network (AMCN) is proposed to downscale GPM IMERG monthly precipitation data. The proposed method is an end-to-end network, which consists of a global cross-attention module, a multi-factor cross-attention module, and a residual convolutional module, comprehensively considering the potential relationships between precipitation and complicated surface characteristics. In addition, a degradation loss function based on low-resolution precipitation is designed to physically constrain the network training, to improve the robustness of the proposed network under different time and scale variations. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed network significantly outperforms three baseline methods. Finally, a geographic difference analysis method is introduced to further improve the downscaled results by incorporating in-situ measurements for high-quality and fine-scale precipitation estimation.

Spatially Continuous and High-resolution Land Surface Temperature: A Review of Reconstruction and Spatiotemporal Fusion Techniques

Remotely sensed, spatially continuous and high spatiotemporal resolution (hereafter referred to as high resolution) land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter for studying the thermal environment and has important applications in many fields. However, difficult atmospheric conditions, sensor malfunctioning and scanning gaps between orbits frequently introduce spatial discontinuities into satellite-retri1eved LST products. For a single sensor, there is also a trade-off between temporal and spatial resolution and, therefore, it is impossible to obtain high temporal and spatial resolution simultaneously. In recent years the reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion of LST products have become active research topics that aim at overcoming this limitation. They are two of most investigated approaches in thermal remote sensing and attract increasing attention, which has resulted in a number of different algorithms. However, to the best of our knowledge, currently no review exists that expatiates and summarizes the available LST reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion methods and algorithms. This paper introduces the principles and theories behind LST reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion and provides an overview of the published research and algorithms. We summarized three kinds of reconstruction methods for missing pixels (spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal methods), two kinds of reconstruction methods for cloudy pixels (Satellite Passive Microwave (PMW)-based and Surface Energy Balance (SEB)-based methods) and three kinds of spatiotemporal fusion methods (weighted function-based, unmixing-based and hybrid methods). The review concludes by summarizing validation methods and by identifying some promising future research directions for generating spatially continuous and high resolution LST products.

Faraday rotation effect in periodic graphene structure

We report the magneto-optical rotation effect in a periodic graphene-sheet structure. Due to the masslessness of carriers in graphene, the magnetic response is very sensitive and the magneto-optical rotation effect is therefore significant. We predict that the Verdet constant of the periodic graphene-sheet structure is roughly 10-100 times that of rare-earth-doped magneto-optical glass in the infrared region.

A covering theory of special relativity

Under the assumption of closed-path velocity of light invariant, we show both the general expression of velocity of light in an ordinary inertial reference frame and the generalized Lorentz transformation between the ordinary inertial reference frame and the absolute (privileged) reference frame. Although such assumption can not determine theory ambiguously, some significant results can still be obtained by the assumption. Furthermore, the study shows that the relativity of simultaneity is not a universal concept.
