Could trapped quintessence account for the laser-detuning-dependent acceleration of cold atoms in varying-frequency time-of-flight experiments?

Using a trapped quintessence model, a series of time-of-flight (TOF) experiments with a different frequency of probe light were designed and performed. The varying-frequency TOF (VFTOF) experiments demonstrated that the fall acceleration of test atoms is dependent on the detuning of the probe light frequency with respect to the atomic transition frequency. In appropriately designed experiments, if the scalar field in the model accounts for the accelerated expansion of the Universe entirely, the field will result in an observable fifth force. Meanwhile, the trapped quintessence model still satisfies all experimental bounds on deviations from general relativity due to both the saturation effect and the short interaction range of the scalar field. The scalar saturates at a value corresponding to the cosmological constant when the microscopic nonrelativistic matter density is large enough. The interaction range of the scalar is inversely proportional to the square root of the microscopic nonrelativistic matter density. The interaction range has been estimated to be several $μ\rm{m}$ in the current cosmic density. The Universe is assumed to be permeated with fuzzy dark matter, which means that the microscopic nonrelativistic matter density defined through the quantum wavefunctions of the ultralight particles can be used on the cosmic scale. By measuring the fall acceleration of the test atoms with the TOF method step-by-step in the detuning frequency domain of the probe light, we derived the dispersion curves of the measured acceleration versus the frequency detuning of the probe light. When the nonrelativistic matter density of the source increased due to the energy gained from the laser light, the test atoms were pulled to the center of the source, and vice versa.

Exact solutions and symmetry analysis for the limiting probability distribution of quantum walks

In the literature, there are numerous studies of one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks (DTQWs) using a moving shift operator. However, there is no exact solution for the limiting probability distributions of DTQWs on cycles using a general coin or swapping shift operator. In this paper, we derive exact solutions for the limiting probability distribution of quantum walks using a general coin and swapping shift operator on cycles for the first time. Based on the exact solutions, we show how to generate symmetric quantum walks and determine the condition under which a symmetric quantum walk appears. Our results suggest that choosing various coin and initial state parameters can achieve a symmetric quantum walk. By defining a quantity to measure the variation of symmetry, deviation and mixing time of symmetric quantum walks are also investigated.

Analytical solutions for quantum walks on 1D chain with different shift operators

In this paper, we study the discrete-time quantum walks on 1D Chain with the moving and swapping shift operators. We derive analytical solutions for the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the evolution operator $\hat{U}$ using the Chebyshev polynomial technique, and calculate the long-time averaged probabilities for the two different shift operators respectively. It is found that the probability distributions for the moving and swapping shift operators display completely different characteristics. For the moving shift operator, the probability distribution exhibits high symmetry where the probabilities at mirror positions are equal. The probabilities are inversely proportional to the system size $N$ and approach to zero as $N\rightarrow \infty$. On the contrary, for the swapping shift operator, the probability distribution is not symmetric, the probability distribution approaches to a power-law stationary distribution as $N\rightarrow \infty$ under certain coin parameter condition. We show that such power-law stationary distribution is determined by the eigenstates of the eigenvalues $\pm1$ and calculate the intrinsic probability for different starting positions. Our findings suggest that the eigenstates corresponding to eigenvalues $\pm1$ play an important role for the swapping shift operator.

Localization of discrete time quantum walks on the glued trees

In this paper, we consider the time averaged distribution of discrete time quantum walks on the glued trees. In order to analyse the walks on the glued trees, we consider a reduction to the walks on path graphs. Using a spectral analysis of the Jacobi matrices defined by the corresponding random walks on the path graphs, we have spectral decomposition of the time evolution operator of the quantum walks. We find significant contributions of the eigenvalues $\pm 1$ of the Jacobi matrices to the time averaged limit distribution of the quantum walks. As a consequence we obtain lower bounds of the time averaged distribution.

Symmetry and localization of quantum walk induced by extra link in cycles

In this paper, we study the impact of single extra link on the coherent dynamics modeled by continuous-time quantum walks. For this purpose, we consider the continuous-time quantum walk on the cycle with an additional link. We find that the additional link in cycle indeed cause a very different dynamical behavior compared to the dynamical behavior on the cycle. We analytically treat this problem and calculate the Laplacian spectrum for the first time, and approximate the eigenvalues and eigenstates using the Chebyshev polynomial technique and perturbation theory. It is found that the probability evolution exhibits a similar behavior like the cycle if the exciton starts far away from the two ends of the added link. We explain this phenomenon by the eigenstate of the largest eigenvalue. We prove symmetry of the long-time averaged probabilities using the exact determinant equation for the eigenvalues expressed by Chebyshev polynomials. In addition, there is a significant localization when the exciton starts at one of the two ends of the extra link, we show that the localized probability is determined by the largest eigenvalue and there is a significant lower bound for it even in the limit of infinite system. Finally, we study the problem of trapping and show the survival probability also displays significant localization for some special values of network parameters, and we determine the conditions for the emergence of such localization. All our findings suggest that the different dynamics caused by the extra link in cycle is mainly determined by the largest eigenvalue and its corresponding eigenstate. We hope the Laplacian spectral analysis in this work provides a deeper understanding for the dynamics of quantum walks on networks.

Discrete-time quantum walks on one-dimensional lattices

In this paper, we study discrete-time quantum walks on one-dimensional lattices. We find that the coherent dynamics depends on the initial states and coin parameters. For infinite size of lattice, we derive an explicit expression for the return probability, which shows scaling behavior $P(0,t)\sim t^{-1}$ and does not depends on the initial states of the walk. In the long-time limit, the probability distribution shows various patterns, depending on the initial states, coin parameters and the lattice size. The average mixing time $M_ε$ closes to the limiting probability in linear $N$ (size of the lattice) for large values of thresholds $ε$. Finally, we introduce another kind of quantum walk on infinite or even-numbered size of lattices, and show that the walk is equivalent to the traditional quantum walk with symmetrical initial state and coin parameter.

Recurrence and Polya number of general one-dimensional random walks

The recurrence properties of random walks can be characterized by Pólya number, i.e., the probability that the walker has returned to the origin at least once. In this paper, we consider recurrence properties for a general 1D random walk on a line, in which at each time step the walker can move to the left or right with probabilities $l$ and $r$, or remain at the same position with probability $o$ ($l+r+o=1$). We calculate Pólya number $P$ of this model and find a simple expression for $P$ as, $P=1-Δ$, where $Δ$ is the absolute difference of $l$ and $r$ ($Δ=|l-r|$). We prove this rigorous expression by the method of creative telescoping, and our result suggests that the walk is recurrent if and only if the left-moving probability $l$ equals to the right-moving probability $r$.
