Measurement-dependent erasure of distinguishability for the observation of interference in an unbalanced SU(1,1) interferometer

It is known that quantum interference can disappear with the mere possibility of distinguishability without actually performing the act. We create such distinguishability in an unbalanced SU(1,1) interferometer and indeed observe no interference in the direct photodetection of the outputs. On the other hand, such distinguishability can be erased with a projective measurement. Here, we report a method of homodyne detection that can also recover interference effect. We find that it is the indistinguishability in amplitude measurement that leads to the recovery of interference, and the quantum nature of homodyne detection and the detector's slow response time both play an essential role. This is different from the quantum eraser schemes mentioned above. It demonstrates that quantum interference occurs in the measurement processes. With no need for path compensation, the unbalanced interferometers studied here should have practical applications in quantum metrology and sensing.

Temporal coherence of optical fields in the presence of entanglement

In classical coherence theory, coherence time is typically related to the bandwidth of the optical field. Narrowing the bandwidth will result in the lengthening of the coherence time. This will erase temporal distinguishability of photons due to time delay in pulsed photon interference. However, this is changed in an SU(1,1)-type quantum interferometer where quantum entanglement is involved. In this paper, we investigate how the temporal coherence of the fields in a pulse-pumped SU(1,1) interferometer changes with the bandwidth of optical filtering. We find that, because of the quantum entanglement, the coherence of the fields does not improve when optical filtering is applied, in contrary to the classical coherence theory, and quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum interference in addition to distinguishability.

Time-domain measurement of ultra-fast intensity difference squeezed pulse pairs generated in fiber

Pulsed pumped four-wave mixing process via $χ^{(3)}$ non-linearity in optical fiber can generate optical pulses with continuous variable quantum correlation. However, pair-wise correlation of the generated pulses in this system has not been studied. Here we report a time-domain measurement of an intensity difference squeezed state generated in fiber. With a fast response differential detection system, we show the generated twin-beam pulses are pair-wisely correlated, and -3.8 dB (-8.1 dB after detection losses correction) intensity difference squeezing degree is measured in time-domain. Our result is benefit for generating multi-mode entangled state by time-division multiplexing in fiber system.

Programmable photon pair source

Photon pairs produced by the pulse-pumped nonlinear parametric processes have been a workhorse of quantum information science. Engineering the spectral property of the photon pairs is crucial in practical applications. In this article, we demonstrate a programmable photon pair source by exploiting a two-stage nonlinear interferometer with a phase-control device. The phase-control device introduces phase shifts by a programmable phase function that can be arbitrarily defined. With a properly designed phase function, the output spectrum of the source can be freely customized and changed without replacing any hardware component in the system. In addition to demonstrating the generation of photon pairs with factorable, positively-correlated, and negatively-correlated spectra, respectively, we show that the output of the source can be tailored into multi-channel spectrally factorable photon pairs without sacrificing efficiency. Such a source, having the ability to modify the spectrum of the photon pairs at will according to the chosen application, is a powerful tool for quantum information science.

Propagation of temporal mode multiplexed optical fields in fibers: influence of dispersion

Exploiting two interfering fields which are initially in the same temporal mode but with the spectra altered by propagating through different fibers, we characterize how the spectra of temporal modes changes with the fiber induced dispersion by measuring the fourth-order interference when the order number and bandwidth of temporal modes are varied. The experiment is done by launching a pulsed field in different temporal modes into an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, in which the fiber lengths in two arms are different. The results show that the mode mismatch of two interfering fields, reflected by the visibility and pattern of interference, is not only dependent upon the amount of unbalanced dispersion but also related to the order number of temporal mode. In particular, the two interfering fields may become orthogonal under a modest amount of unbalanced dispersion when the mode number of the fields is $k\geq2$. Moreover, we discuss how to recover the spectrally distorted temporal mode by measuring and compensating the transmission induced dispersion. Our investigation paves the way for further investigating the distribution of temporally multiplexed quantum states in fiber network.

Accessible precisions for estimating two conjugate parameters using Gaussian probes

We analyse the precision limits for simultaneous estimation of a pair of conjugate parameters in a displacement channel using Gaussian probes. Having a set of squeezed states as an initial resource, we compute the Holevo Cramér-Rao bound to investigate the best achievable estimation precisions if only passive linear operations are allowed to be performed on the resource prior to probing the channel. The analysis reveals the optimal measurement scheme and allows us to quantify the best precision for one parameter when the precision of the second conjugate parameter is fixed. To estimate the conjugate parameter pair with equal precision, our analysis shows that the optimal probe is obtained by combining two squeezed states with orthogonal squeezing quadratures on a 50:50 beam splitter. If different importance are attached to each parameter, then the optimal mixing ratio is no longer 50:50. Instead it follows a simple function of the available squeezing and the relative importance between the two parameters.

Decoupling Cross-Quadrature Correlations using Passive Operations

Quadrature correlations between subsystems of a Gaussian quantum state are fully characterised by its covariance matrix. For example, the covariance matrix determines the amount of entanglement or decoherence of the state. Here, we establish when it is possible to remove correlations between conjugate quadratures using only passive operations. Such correlations are usually undesired and arise due to experimental cross-quadrature contamination. Using the Autonne--Takagi factorisation, we present necessary and sufficient conditions to determine when such removal is possible. Our proof is constructive, and whenever it is possible we obtain an explicit expression for the required passive operation.

Direct temporal mode measurement for the characterization of temporally multiplexed high dimensional quantum entanglement in continuous variables

Field-orthogonal temporal mode analysis of optical fields is recently developed for a new framework of quantum information science. But so far, the exact profiles of the temporal modes are not known, which makes it difficult to achieve mode selection and de-multiplexing. Here, we report a novel method that measures directly the exact form of the temporal modes. This in turn enables us to make mode-orthogonal homodyne detection with mode-matched local oscillators. We apply the method to a pulse-pumped, specially engineered fiber parametric amplifier and demonstrate temporally multiplexed multi-dimensional quantum entanglement of continuous variables in telecom wavelength. The temporal mode characterization technique can be generalized to other pulse-excited systems to find their eigen modes for multiplexing in temporal domain.

Direct temporal mode measurement of photon pairs by stimulated emission

It is known that photon pairs generated from pulse-pumped spontaneous parametric processes can be described by independent temporal modes and form a multi-temporal mode entangled state. However, the exact form of the temporal modes is not known even though the joint spectral intensity of photon pairs can be measured by the method of stimulated emission tomography. In this paper, we describe a feedback-iteration method which, combined with the stimulated emission method, can give rise to the exact forms of the independent temporal modes for the temporally entangled photon pairs.

Generation of pure-state single photons with high heralding efficiency by using a three-stage nonlinear interferometer

We experimentally study a fiber-based three-stage nonlinear interferometer and demonstrate its application in generating heralded single photons with high efficiency and purity by spectral engineering. We obtain a heralding efficiency of 90% at a brightness of 0.039 photons/pulse. The purity of the source is checked by two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a visibility of 95%+-6% (after correcting Raman scattering and multi-pair events). Our investigation indicates that the heralded source of single photons produced by the three-stage nonlinear interferometer has the advantages of high purity, high heralding efficiency, high brightness, and flexibility in wavelength and bandwidth selection.

Quantum Entangled Interferometers

A new type of quantum entangled interferometer was recently realized that employs parametric amplifiers as the wave splitting and recombination elements. The quantum entanglement stems from the parametric amplifiers, which produce quantum correlated fields for probing the phase change signal in the interferometer. This type of quantum entangled interferometer exhibits some unique properties that are different from traditional beam splitter-based interferometers such as Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Because of these properties, it is superior to the traditional interferometers in many aspects, especially in the phase measurement sensitivity. We will review its unique properties and applications in quantum metrology and sensing, quantum information, and quantum state engineering.

Quantum state engineering by nonlinear quantum interference

Multi-photon quantum interference is the underlying principle for optical quantum information processing protocols. Indistinguishability is the key to quantum interference. Therefore, the success of many protocols in optical quantum information processing relies on the availability of photon states with a well-defined spatial and temporal mode. Photons in single spatial mode can be obtained from nonlinear processes in single-mode waveguides. For the temporal mode, the common approach is to engineer the nonlinear processes. But it is complicated because the spectral properties and the nonlinear interaction are often intertwined through phase matching condition. In this paper, we study a different approach which is based on an SU(1,1) nonlinear interferometer with a pulsed pump and a controllable linear spectral phase shift for precise engineering. We systematically analyze the important figures of merit such as modal purity and heralding efficiency to investigate the feasibility of this approach. Specifically, we analyze in detail the requirement on the spectral phase engineering to optimize the figures of merit and apply numerical simulations to a fiber system. Both modal purity and efficiency are improved simultaneously. Furthermore, a novel multi-stage nonlinear interferometer is proposed and shown to achieve more precise state engineering for near-ideal single-mode operation and near-unity efficiency. We also extend the study to the case of high gain in the four-wave mixing process for the spectral engineering of quantum entanglement in continuous variables. Our investigation provides a new approach for precisely tailoring the spectral property of quantum light sources, especially, photon pairs can be engineered to simultaneously possess the features of high purity, high collection efficiency, high brightness, and high flexibility in wavelength and bandwidth selection.

Measuring the continuous variable quantum entanglement with a parametric amplifier assisted homodyne detection

Traditional method for measuring continuous-variable quantum entanglement relies on balanced homodyne detections, which are sensitive to vacuum quantum noise coupled in through losses resulted from many factors such as detector's quantum efficiency and mode mismatching between detected field and local oscillator. In this paper, we propose and analyze a new measurement method, which is realized by assisting the balanced homodyne detections with a high gain phase sensitive parametric amplifier. The employment of the high gain parametric amplifier helps to tackle the vacuum quantum noise originated from detection losses. Moreover, because the high gain parametric amplifier can couple two fields of different types in a phase sensitive manner, the proposed scheme can be used to reveal quantum entanglement between two fields of different types by using only one balanced homodyne detection. Furthermore, detailed analysis shows that in the multi-mode case, the proposed scheme is also advantageous over the traditional method. Such a new measurement method should find wide applications in quantum information and quantum metrology involving measurement of continuous variables.

Quantum information tapping using a fiber optical parametric amplifier with noise figure improved by correlated inputs

One of the important function in optical communication system is the distribution of information encoded in an optical beam. It is not a problem to accomplish this in a classical system since classical information can be copied at will. However, challenges arise in quantum system because extra quantum noise is often added when the information content of a quantum state is distributed to various users. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a quantum information tap by using a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) with correlated inputs, whose noise is reduced by the destructive quantum interference through quantum entanglement between the signal and the idler input fields. By measuring the noise figure of the FOPA and comparing with a regular FOPA, we observe an improvement of 0.7+-0.1 dB and 0.84+-0.09 dB from the signal and idler outputs, respectively. When the low noise FOPA functions as an information splitter, the device has a total information transfer coefficient of Ts+Ti=1.47+-0.2, which is greater than the classical limit of 1. Moreover, this fiber based device works at the 1550 nm telecom band, so it is compatible with the current fiber-optical network.

Three-way noiseless signal splitting in a parametric amplifier with quantum correlation

We demonstrate that a phase-insensitive parametric amplifier, coupled to a quantum correlated source, can be used as a quantum information tap for noiseless three-way signal splitting. We find that the output signals are amplified noiselessly in two of the three output ports while the other can more or less keep its original input size without adding noise. This scheme is able to cascade and scales up for efficient information distribution in an optical network. Furthermore, we find this scheme satisfies the criteria for a non-ideal quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement and thus can serve as a QND measurement device. With two readouts correlated to the input, we find this scheme also satisfies the criterion for sequential QND measurement.

Generation of correlated photon pairs in micro/nano-fibers

We study the generation of correlated photon pairs via spontaneous four wave mixing in a 15 cm long micro/nano-fiber (MNF). The MNF is properly fabricated to satisfy the phase matching condition for generating the signal and idler photon pairs at the wavelengths of about 1310 and 851 nm, respectively. Photon counting measurements yield a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 530 for a photon production rate of about 0.002 (0.0005) per pulse in the signal (idler) band. We also analyze the spectral information of the signal photons originated from the spontaneous four wave mixing and Raman scattering. In addition to discovering some unique feature of Raman scattering, we find the bandwidth of the individual signal photons is much greater than the calculated value for the MNF with homogeneous structure. Our investigations indicate the MNF is a promising candidate for developing the sources of nonclassical light and the spectral property of photon pairs can be used to non-invasively test the diameter and homogeneity of the MNF.

Multi-mode theory of pulsed twin beams generation using a high gain fiber optical parametric amplifier

Using the Bogoliubov transformation in multi-frequency modes to describe the evolution of the non-degenerate signal and idler twin beams, we theoretically investigate the quantum noise properties of the pulse pumped high gain fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPA). The results show that the noise figure of the FOPA is generally greater than the 3 dB quantum limit unless the joint spectral function is factorable and the spectrum of the input signal well matches the gain spectrum in the signal band. However, the intensity difference noise of the twin beams, which weakly depends on the joint spectral function, can be significantly less than the shot-noise limit when the temporal modes of the pump and the input signal are properly matched. Moreover, to closely resemble the real experimental condition, the quantum noise of twin beams generated from a broadband FOPA is numerically studied by taking the various kinds of experimental imperfections into account. Our study is not only useful for developing a compact fiber source of twin beams, but also helpful for understanding the quantum noise limit of a pulse pumped FOPA in the fiber communication system.

An all-fiber source of pulsed twin beams at telecom band for quantum communication

Motivated by the pursuit of a simple system to produce non-classical light sources for long- distance quantum communication, we generate for the first time an all-fiber source of pulsed twin beams in 1550 nm band by using a high gain fiber optical parametric amplifier. The noise of intensity difference of the twin beams is below the shot noise limit by 3.1 dB (10.4 dB after correction for losses). A detailed study reveals a number of limiting factors for higher noise reduction. Therefore, further noise reduction will be feasible once care is taken for these limiting factors.

Passive optical switching of photon pairs using a spontaneous parametric fiber loop

We study a novel scheme named spontaneous parametric fiber loop (SPFL), configured by deliberately intro- ducing dispersive elements into the nonlinear Sagnac loop, and show it can function as a passive switch of photon pairs. The two-photon state coming out of SPFL highly depends on the dispersion induced phase difference of photon pairs counter-propagating in the loop. By properly managing the dispersive elements, the signal and idler photons of a pair with a certain detuning and bandwidth can be directed to the desired spatial modes of SPFL. If the photon pairs are used to generate heralded single photons, the SPFL can be viewed as a switch of single photons. Moreover, our investigation about the dispersion based phase modulation is also beneficial for designing all fiber sources of entangled photon pairs.

Spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four wave mixing in inhomogeneous photonic crystal fibers

The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is one of the excellent media for generating photon pairs via spontaneous four wave mixing. Here we study how the inhomogeneity of PCFs affect the spectral properties of photon pairs from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. The theoretical model shows that the photon pairs born in different place of the inhomogeneous PCF are coherently superposed, and a modulation in the broadened spectrum of phase matching function will appear, which prevents the realization of spectral factorable photon pairs. In particular, the inhomogeneity induced modulation can be examined by measuring the spectrum of individual signal or idler field when the asymmetric group velocity matching is approximately fulfilled. Our experiments are performed by tailoring the spectrum of pulsed pump to satisfy the specified phase matching condition. The observed spectra of individual signal photons, which are produced from different segments of the 1.9 m inhomogeneous PCF, agree with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are not only useful for fiber based quantum state engineering, but also provide a dependable method to test the homogeneity of PCF.

Characterizing heralded single photons with an all-fiber source of photon pairs

Based on the signal and idler photon pairs produced in a piece of high nonlinear fiber by a pulsed pump, we characterize the heralded single photon source from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. In the theory model, started from the derived expression of Bogoliubov transformation for a broadband pulsed pump, the second-order intensity correlation function $g_c^{(2)}(0)$, heralding efficiency $H$, indistinguishability and brightness of the heralded single photons as a function of source parameters are analyzed and discussed. In the experiments, using several kinds of combinations of the source parameters, the values of $g_c^{(2)}(0)$ and $H$ are measured and compared. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are useful for optimizing the parameters and for developing a single photon source suitable for quantum information processing.

Effect of chromatic dispersion induced chirp on the temporal coherence property of individual beam from spontaneous four wave mixing

Temporal coherence of individual signal or idler beam, determined by the spectral correlation property of photon pairs, is important for realizing quantum interference among independent sources. To understand the effect of chirp on the temporal coherence property, two series of experiments are investigated by introducing different amount of chirp into either the pulsed pump or individual signal (idler) beam. In the first one, based on spontaneous four wave mixing in a piece of optical fiber, the intensity correlation function of the filtered individual signal beam, which characterizes the degree of temporal coherence, is measured as a function of the chirp of pump. The results demonstrate that the chirp of pump pulses decreases the degree of temporal coherence. In the second one, a Hong-Ou-Mandel type two-photon interference experiment with the signal beams generated in two different fibers is carried out. The results illustrate that the chirp of individual beam does not change the temporal coherence degree, but affect the temporal mode matching. To achieve high visibility, apart from improving the coherence degree by minimizing the chirp of pump, mode matching should be optimized by managing the chirps of individual beams.

Generation of Photon Pairs in Dispersion Shift Fibers through Spontaneous Four Wave Mixing: Influence of Self-phase Modulation

Correlated signal and idler photon pairs with small detuning in the telecom band can be generated through spontaneous four-wave mixing in dispersion shift fibers. However, photons originated from other nonlinear processes in optical fibers, such as Raman scattering and self-phase modulation, may contaminate the photon pairs. It has been proved that photons produced by Raman scattering are the background noise of photon pairs. Here we show that photons induced by self-phase modulation of pump pulses are another origin of background noise. After studying the dependence of self-phase modulation induced photons in signal and idler bands, we demonstrate that the quantum correlation of photon pairs can be degraded by the self-phase modulation effect. The investigations are useful for characterizing and optimizing an all fiber source of photon pairs.

Quantum Dense Coding Exploiting Bright EPR Beam

Highly efficient quantum dense coding for continuous variables has been experimentally accomplished by means of exploiting bright EPR beam with anticorrelation of amplitude quadratures and correlation of phase quadratures, which is generated from a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier operating in the state of deamplification. Two bits of classical information are encoded on two quadratures of a half of bright EPR beam at the sender Alice and transmitted to the receiver Bob via one qubit of the shared quantum state after encoding. The amplitude and phase signals are simultaneously decoded with the other half of EPR beam by the direct measurement of the Bell-state at Bob. The signal to noise ratios of the simultaneously measured amplitude and phase signals are improved 5.4dB and 4.8dB with respect to that of the shot noise limit respectively. A high degree of immunity to unauthorized eavesdropping of the presented quantum communication scheme is experimentally demonstrated.
