A z ~ 0.4 Galaxy Reflecting the high-redshift Little Red Dots: An Extended Starburst with an Overmassive Black Hole

One of the most remarkable discoveries of JWST is a population of compact, red sources at z > 4, commonly referred to as Little Red Dots (LRDs). Spectroscopic identifications reported that most LRDs are active galactic nuclei (AGNs), which are preferentially found around z ~ 6 and could imply a key phase in the formation and growth of black holes (BHs) in the early universe. Photometric surveys at lower redshift have recently been carried out to trace their evolution across cosmic time, and a small number of LRD-like galaxies have been spectroscopically identified at both Cosmic Noon and in the local universe. Here we report the discovery of one of the lowest-z LRD-like galaxies, J204837.26-002437.2 (hereafter J2048) at z = 0.4330, using new Gemini-N/GMOS IFU observations combined with archival multi-band photometric SED data. The GMOS data reveal extended blue emission from starburst with a star formation rate of 400 solar mass per year, together with an extended, highly fast ionized outflow. This is the first spectroscopic confirmation of extended host emission and outflow in an LRD-like galaxy, providing a unique laboratory for understanding the nature of their high-redshift counterparts. Moreover, J2048 would host an extremely overmassive BH with a BH-to-stellar mass ratio of ~ 60%, with the BH mass and host stellar mass estimated to be 10^10.2 and 10^10.4 solar masses, respectively. We discuss the origin and evolutionary fate of J2048, and the implications that such low-z analogs have for interpreting the properties of high-z LRDs.

Brain Tissue Segmentation Across the Human Lifespan via Supervised Contrastive Learning

Automatic segmentation of brain MR images into white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is critical for tissue volumetric analysis and cortical surface reconstruction. Due to dramatic structural and appearance changes associated with developmental and aging processes, existing brain tissue segmentation methods are only viable for specific age groups. Consequently, methods developed for one age group may fail for another. In this paper, we make the first attempt to segment brain tissues across the entire human lifespan (0-100 years of age) using a unified deep learning model. To overcome the challenges related to structural variability underpinned by biological processes, intensity inhomogeneity, motion artifacts, scanner-induced differences, and acquisition protocols, we propose to use contrastive learning to improve the quality of feature representations in a latent space for effective lifespan tissue segmentation. We compared our approach with commonly used segmentation methods on a large-scale dataset of 2,464 MR images. Experimental results show that our model accurately segments brain tissues across the lifespan and outperforms existing methods.

Groupwise Query Performance Prediction with BERT

While large-scale pre-trained language models like BERT have advanced the state-of-the-art in IR, its application in query performance prediction (QPP) is so far based on pointwise modeling of individual queries. Meanwhile, recent studies suggest that the cross-attention modeling of a group of documents can effectively boost performances for both learning-to-rank algorithms and BERT-based re-ranking. To this end, a BERT-based groupwise QPP model is proposed, in which the ranking contexts of a list of queries are jointly modeled to predict the relative performance of individual queries. Extensive experiments on three standard TREC collections showcase effectiveness of our approach. Our code is available at https://github.com/VerdureChen/Group-QPP.

Holomorphic Euler number of K$\ddot{a}$hler manifolds with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature

Let $M^n$ be a compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonzero first Betti number. We show that the holomorphic Euler number of $M^n$ vanishes, which gives a new obstruction for compact complex manifolds admitting K$\ddot{a}$hler metrics with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature. A crucial step in the proof is to show a vanishing theorem of Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology.

Riemannian manifolds with entire Grauert tube are rationally elliptic

It was conjectured by Bott-Grove-Halperin that a compact simply connected Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonnegative sectional curvature is rationally elliptic. We confirm this conjecture under the stronger assumption that $M$ has entire Grauert tube,i.e.,$M$ is a real analytic Riemannian manifold that has a unique adapted complex structure defined on the whole tangent bundle $TM$.

MSQ-Index: A Succinct Index for Fast Graph Similarity Search

Graph similarity search has received considerable attention in many applications, such as bioinformatics, data mining, pattern recognition, and social networks. Existing methods for this problem have limited scalability because of the huge amount of memory they consume when handling very large graph databases with millions or billions of graphs. In this paper, we study the problem of graph similarity search under the graph edit distance constraint. We present a space-efficient index structure based upon the q-gram tree that incorporates succinct data structures and hybrid encoding to achieve improved query time performance with minimal space usage. Specifically, the space usage of our index requires only 5%-15% of the previous state-of-the-art indexing size on the tested data while at the same time achieving 2-3 times acceleration in query time with small data sets. We also boost the query performance by augmenting the global filter with range search, which allows us to perform a query in a reduced region. In addition, we propose two effective filters that combine degree structures and label structures. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed approach is superior in space and competitive in filtering to the state-of-the-art approaches. To the best of our knowledge, our index is the first in-memory index for this problem that successfully scales to cope with the large dataset of 25 million chemical structure graphs from the PubChem dataset.

Finiteness of prescribed fibers of local biholomorphisms: a geometric approach

Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of complex dimension at least two, $F : X \rightarrow \mathbb{C}^n$ a local biholomorphism, and $q \in F(X)$. In this paper we formulate sufficient conditions involving only objects naturally associated to $q$, in order for the fiber over $q$ to be finite. Assume that $F^{-1}(l)$ is 1-connected for the generic complex line $l$ containing $q$, and $F^{-1}(l)$ has finitely many components whenever $l$ is an exceptional line through $q$. Using arguments from topology and differential geometry, we establish a sharp estimate on the size of $F^{-1}(q)$. It follows that for $n \geq 2$, a local biholomorphism of $X$ onto $\mathbb{C}^n$ is invertible if and only if the pull-back of every complex line is 1-connected.

Rigidity theorems for submetries in positive curvature

We derive general structure and rigidity theorems for submetries $f: M \to X$, where $M$ is a Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature $\sec M \ge 1$. When applied to a non-trivial Riemannian submersion, it follows that $diam X \leq π/2 $. In case of equality, there is a Riemannian submersion $\mathbb{S} \to M$ from a unit sphere, and as a consequence, $f$ is known up to metric congruence. A similar rigidity theorem also holds in the general context of Riemannian foliations.

On the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds

We study the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds, which we call Sasaki groups. It is shown that all known K$\ddot{a}$hler groups are Sasaki, in particular, all finite groups are Sasaki. On the other hand, we show there exists many restrictions on the fundamental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds. We also study the Abel-Jacobi map of a compact Sasakian manifold and its applications to Sasaki groups.
