MyoPS: A Benchmark of Myocardial Pathology Segmentation Combining Three-Sequence Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Images

Assessment of myocardial viability is essential in diagnosis and treatment management of patients suffering from myocardial infarction, and classification of pathology on myocardium is the key to this assessment. This work defines a new task of medical image analysis, i.e., to perform myocardial pathology segmentation (MyoPS) combining three-sequence cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images, which was first proposed in the MyoPS challenge, in conjunction with MICCAI 2020. The challenge provided 45 paired and pre-aligned CMR images, allowing algorithms to combine the complementary information from the three CMR sequences for pathology segmentation. In this article, we provide details of the challenge, survey the works from fifteen participants and interpret their methods according to five aspects, i.e., preprocessing, data augmentation, learning strategy, model architecture and post-processing. In addition, we analyze the results with respect to different factors, in order to examine the key obstacles and explore potential of solutions, as well as to provide a benchmark for future research. We conclude that while promising results have been reported, the research is still in the early stage, and more in-depth exploration is needed before a successful application to the clinics. Note that MyoPS data and evaluation tool continue to be publicly available upon registration via its homepage (www.sdspeople.fudan.edu.cn/zhuangxiahai/0/myops20/).

Epitaxial engineering of flat silver fluorides cuprate analogs

As-grown AgF2 has a remarkably similar electronic structure as insulating cuprates, but it is extremely electronegative, which makes it hard to handle and dope. Furthermore, buckling of layers reduces magnetic interactions and enhances unwanted self-trapping lattice effects. We argue that epitaxial engineering can solve all these problems. By using a high throughput approach and first principle computations, we find a set of candidate substrates which can sustain the chemical aggressiveness of AgF2 and at the same time have good lattice parameter matching for heteroepitaxy, enhancing AgF2 magnetic and transport properties and opening the possibility of field-effect carrier injection to achieve a new generation of high-Tc superconductors. Assuming a magnetic mechanism and extrapolating from cuprates we predict that the superconducting critical temperature of a single layer can reach 195 K.

Three-dimensional topological semimetal phase in layered TaNiTe5 probed by de Haas-van Alphen effect

Layered three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals have attracted intensively attention due to the exotic phenomena and abundantly tunable properties. Here we report the experimental evidence for the 3D topological semimetal phase in layered material TaNiTe5 single crystals through quantum oscillations. Strong quantum oscillations have been observed with diamagnetism background in TaNiTe5. By analyzing the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations, multi-periodic oscillations were extracted, in content with magnetotransport measurements. Moreover, nontrivial "π" Berry phase with 3D Fermi surface is identified, indicating the topologically nontrivial feature in TaNiTe5. Additionally, we demonstrated the thin-layer of TaNiTe5 crystals is highly feasible by the mechanical exfoliation, which offers a platform to explore exotic properties in low dimensional topological semimetal and paves the way for potential applications in nanodevices.

Extremals in the Engel group with a sub-Lorentzian metric

Let E be the Engel group and D be a rank 2 bracket generating left invariant distribution with a Lorentzian metric, which is a nondegenerate metric of index 1. In this paper, we first prove that timelike normal extremals are locally maximizing. Second, we obtain a parametrization of timelike, spacelike, lightlike normal extremal trajectories by Jacobi functions. Third, a discrete symmetry group and its fixed points which are Maxwell points of of timelike and spacelike normal extremals, are described. An estimate for the cut time (the time of loss of optimality) on extremal trajectories is derived on this basis.

Geodesics in the Engel group with a sub-Lorentzian metric

Let E be the Engel group and D be a rank 2 bracket generating left invariant distribution with a Lorentzian metric, which is a nondegenerate metric of index 1. In this paper, we first study some properties of horizontal curves on E. Second, we prove that time-like normal geodesics are locally maximizers in the Engel group, and calculate the explicit expression of non-space-like geodesics.

Electronic structure of nickelates: From two-dimensional heterostructures to three-dimensional bulk materials

Reduced dimensionality and strong electronic correlations, which are among the most important ingredients for cupratelike high-Tc superconductivity, characterize also the physics of nickelate-based heterostructures. Starting from the local-density approximation we arrive at a simple two-band model for quasi-two-dimensional 2D LaNiO3 /LaAlO3 heterostructures and extend it by introducing an appropriate hopping in the z direction to describe the dimensional crossover to three dimensions 3D. Using dynamical mean-field theory, we study the effects of electronic correlations with increasing interaction strength along the crossover from 2D to 3D. Qualitatively, the effects of electronic correlations are surprisingly similar, albeit quantitatively larger interaction strengths are required in three dimensions for getting a Mott-Hubbard insulating state. The exchange parameters of an effective Kugel-Khomskii-type spin-orbital model are also derived and reveal strong antiferromagnetic tendencies.

Itinerant Flat-Band Magnetism in Hydrogenated Carbon Nanotubes

We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of hydrogenated carbon nanotubes using ab initio spin-polarized calculations within both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We find that the combination of charge transfer and carbon network distortion makes the spin-polarized flat-band appear in the tube's energy gap. Various spin-dependent ground state properties are predicted with the changes of the radii, the chiralities of the tubes and the concentration of hydrogen (H). It is found that strain or external electric field can effectively modulate the flat-band spin-splitting, and even induce an insulator-metal transition.

Structural transformations of double-walled carbon nanotube bundle under hydrostatic pressure

Three kinds of the response mechanisms to the external pressure have been found for double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) bundle, depending strongly on their average radius and symmetry. The small-diameter DWNT bundle undergoes a small discontinuous volume change, and then deform continuously. The intermediate-diameter DWNT bundle collapses completely after a structure phase transition (SPT). Significantly, two SPTs exist for the larger-diameter DWNT bundle if the outer tube has no $C_{6}$ or $C_{3}$ symmetry. It would be interesting to search for signatures of these different structural transformations by experimentally investigating mechanical, optical and thermal response functions of DWNT bundle.
