Minimally Truncated SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory and String Tension

We study SU(3) gauge theory on small lattices in the minimal (qutrit) electric field truncation retaining only the ${\bf 1}, {\bf 3}, {\bf \overline{3}}$ representations for the link variables. Explicit expressions are given for the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian for the square plaquette chain and the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Our formalism can be easily extended to the minimally truncated general SU($N_c$) gauge theory. The addition of (static) quarks is discussed. We present results for the energy spectrum of the gauge field on these lattices by exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian and analyze its statistical properties. We also compute the SU(3) string tension and discuss how it is modified by vacuum fluctuations. Finally, we calculate the potential energies of a static quark-antiquark pair and three static quarks and study their screening at finite temperature.

Quarkonium Suppression in the Open Quantum System Approach

Quarkonium suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions has been studied experimentally for decades to probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. For this purpose, complete theoretical understanding of the time evolution of quarkonium inside the quark-gluon plasma is needed but challenging. Here I review recent progress in applying the open quantum system framework to describe the real-time dynamics of quarkonium, with a focus on the gauge-invariant chromoelectric field correlators of the plasma that control the dynamics.

Coupled Transport Equations for Quarkonium Production in Heavy Ion Collisions

Motivated by recent applications of the open quantum system formalism to understand quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma, we develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations for open heavy quark-antiquark pairs and quarkonia. Our approach keeps track of the correlation between the heavy quark-antiquark pair from quarkonium dissociation and thus is able to account for both uncorrelated and correlated recombination. By solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for current heavy ion collision experiments, we find correlated recombination is crucial to describe the data of bottomonia nuclear modification factors. To further test the importance of correlated recombination in experiments, we propose a new observable: $\frac{R_{AA}[χ_b(1P)]}{R_{AA}[Υ(2S)]}$. Future measurements of this ratio will help distinguish calculations with and without correlated recombination.

Fate of Heavy Quark Bound States inside Quark-Gluon Plasma

Transport equations have been applied successfully to describe the quarkonium evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma, which include both plasma screening effects and recombination. We demonstrate how the quarkonium transport equation is derived from QCD by using the open quantum system framework and effective field theory. Weak coupling and Markovian approximations used in the derivation are justified from a separation of scales. By solving the equations numerically, we study the Upsilon production in heavy ion collisions.

An Effective Field Theory Approach to the Stabilization of $^8$Be in a QED Plasma

We use effective field theory to study the $\mathrmα$-$\mathrmα$ resonant scattering in a finite-temperature QED plasma. The static plasma screening effect causes the resonance state $^8$Be to live longer and eventually leads to the formation of a bound state when $m_D\gtrsim 0.3$ MeV. We speculate that this effect may have implications on the rates of cosmologically and astrophysically relevant nuclear reactions involving $\mathrmα$ particles.
