From hydro to jet quenching, coalescence and hadron cascade: a coupled approach to solving the RAA⊗v2R_{AA}\otimes v_2 puzzle

Hydrodynamics and jet quenching are responsible for the elliptic flow v2v_2 and suppression of large transverse momentum (pTp_T) hadrons, respectively, two of the most important phenomena leading to the discovery of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A consistent description of the hadron suppression factor RAAR_{AA} and v2v_2, especially at intermediate pTp_T, however, remains a challenge. We solve this long-standing RAA⊗v2R_{AA}\otimes v_2 puzzle by including quark coalescence for hadronization and final state hadron cascade in the coupled linear Boltzmann transport-hydro model that combines concurrent jet transport and hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. We illustrate that quark coalescence and hadron cascade, two keys to solving the puzzle, also lead to a splitting of v2v_2 for pions, kaons and protons in the intermediate pTp_T region. We demonstrate for the first time that experimental data on RAAR_{AA}, v2v_2 and their hadron flavor dependence from low to intermediate and high pTp_T in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be understood within this coupled framework.

Search for the elusive jet-induced diffusion wake in Z/γZ/γ-jets with 2D jet tomography in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Diffusion wake is an unambiguous part of the jet-induced medium response in high-energy heavy-ion collisions that leads to a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the jet propagation. New experimental data on ZZ-hadron correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider show, however, an enhancement of soft hadrons in the direction of both the ZZ and the jet. Using a coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydro model, we demonstrate that medium modification of partons from the initial multiple parton interaction (MPI) gives rise to a soft hadron enhancement that is uniform in azimuthal angle while jet-induced medium response and soft gluon radiation dominate the enhancement in the jet direction. After subtraction of the contributions from MPI with a mixed-event procedure, the diffusion wake becomes visible in the near-side ZZ-hadron correlation. We further employ the longitudinal and transverse gradient jet tomography for the first time to localize the initial jet production positions in Z/γZ/γ-jet events in which the effect of the diffusion wake is apparent in Z/γZ/γ-hadron correlation even without the subtraction of MPI.

Coupled Transport Equations for Quarkonium Production in Heavy Ion Collisions

Motivated by recent applications of the open quantum system formalism to understand quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma, we develop a set of coupled Boltzmann equations for open heavy quark-antiquark pairs and quarkonia. Our approach keeps track of the correlation between the heavy quark-antiquark pair from quarkonium dissociation and thus is able to account for both uncorrelated and correlated recombination. By solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for current heavy ion collision experiments, we find correlated recombination is crucial to describe the data of bottomonia nuclear modification factors. To further test the importance of correlated recombination in experiments, we propose a new observable: RAA[χb(1P)]RAA[Υ(2S)]\frac{R_{AA}[χ_b(1P)]}{R_{AA}[Υ(2S)]}. Future measurements of this ratio will help distinguish calculations with and without correlated recombination.

Partonic transport model application to heavy flavor

Heavy-flavor particles are excellent probes of the properties of the hot and dense nuclear medium created in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-flavor transport coefficients in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) stage of the collisions are particularly interesting, as they contain important information on the strong interaction at finite temperatures. Studying the heavy-flavor evolution in a dynamically evolving medium requires a comprehensive multi-stage modeling approach of both the medium and the probes, with an accurate implementation of the physical ingredients to be tested. For this purpose, I have developed a new partonic transport model (Linear-Boltzmann-plus-Diffusion-Transport-Model) LIDO and applied it to heavy quark propagation inside a QGP. The model has an improved implementation of parton in-medium bremsstrahlung and a flexible treatment of the probe-medium interactions, combining both large angle scatterings and diffusion processes. The model is then coupled to a high-energy event-generator, a hydrodynamic medium evolution and a hadronic transport model. Finally, applying a Bayesian analysis, I extract the heavy quark transport coefficients from a model-to-data comparison. The results, with uncertainty quantification, are found to be consistent with earlier extraction of the light-quark transport coefficients at high momentum and with first-principle calculations of the heavy flavor diffusion constant at low momentum.

Study of heavy-flavor jets in a transport approach

Measurements at the RHIC and the LHC have observed flavor dependence of single-hadron suppression, which reveal the role played by quark masses in the parton interactions with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium. In this study, we explore the manifestation of quark mass effect and flavor dependence in jet observables. We approach this study using the LIDO transport model. Both elastic and medium-induced radiative processes are implemented for hard parton evolution in the medium. To guarantee energy-momentum conservation in the model for the study of full jet observables, we also include a component that mimics the energy-momentum transported by medium excitation. We first predict the heavy-jet (B-jet, D-jet) and inclusive-jet nuclear modification factor RAAR_{AA} in central nuclear collisions at both the RHIC and the LHC beam energies. We observe a flavor-dependent jet suppression as a function of jet transverse momentum, which can be tested by future precision measurements of heavy jets. We further investigate a novel observable that considers the angular correlation between two hard objects: a D-meson and a jet, which provides model constraints in addition to those imposed by inclusive measurements.

A modified-Boltzmann approach for modeling the hot QCD medium-induce splitting vertices in the deep LPM region

Hard probes produced in perturbative processes are excellent probes for the study of the hot and dense QCD matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Transport theory, allowing for coupling to an evolving medium with fluctuating initial conditions, has become a powerful tool in this endeavor. However, the implementation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect for medium-induced parton bremsstrahlung and pair production, poses a challenge to semi-classical transport models based on Boltzmann-type transport equations. In this work, we investigate a possible solution to approximate the LPM effect in a "modified Boltzmann transport" approach, including a prescription for the running coupling constant. By fixing a numerical parameter, this approach quantitatively reproduces the rates of medium-induced parton splitting predicted by the next-to-lead-log solution of the AMY equation which is valid in the deep-LPM regime of an infinite medium. We also find qualitative agreement of our implementation with calculations in a finite and expanding medium, but future improvements are needed for added precision at small path length. This work benefits transport model-based studies and the usage of these models in the phenomenological extraction of the jet transport coefficient.

Fate of Heavy Quark Bound States inside Quark-Gluon Plasma

Transport equations have been applied successfully to describe the quarkonium evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma, which include both plasma screening effects and recombination. We demonstrate how the quarkonium transport equation is derived from QCD by using the open quantum system framework and effective field theory. Weak coupling and Markovian approximations used in the derivation are justified from a separation of scales. By solving the equations numerically, we study the Upsilon production in heavy ion collisions.

Heavy-flavor dynamics in relativistic p-Pb collisions at SNN=5.02\sqrt{S_{NN}}=5.02 TeV

We investigate the heavy flavor dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium created in p-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics model describing QGP medium, the dynamics of heavy quarks are studied in an improved Langevin framework incorporating both collisional and radiative energy loss. The hadronization of the heavy quarks is given by a hybrid model of fragmentation and recombination. We find that the in-medium evolution of charm quarks raises the D-meson RpPbR_{pPb} at low transverse momenta while it suppresses the D-meson RpPbR_{pPb} at intermediate momenta. In addition, the elliptic flow of D-meson is calculated. For a diffusion coefficient which reproduces central RAAR_{AA} data at the LHC, we find a much smaller D-meson v2v_2 compared to the light hadrons. This observation indicates an incomplete coupling between heavy quarks with the medium, due to the reduced medium size compared to AA collisions.
