Enhancing Visual Question Answering with Multimodal LLMs via Chain-of-Question Guided Retrieval-Augmented Generation

With advances in multimodal research and deep learning, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have emerged as a powerful paradigm for a wide range of multimodal tasks. As a core problem in vision-language research, Visual Question Answering (VQA) has increasingly employed MLLMs to improve performance, particularly in open-domain settings where external knowledge is essential. In this work, we aim to further enhance retrieval-based VQA by more effectively integrating MLLMs with structured reasoning and knowledge acquisition. We introduce a logical prompting strategy that fuses Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning with Visual Question Decomposition (VQD), termed CoVQD, to guide retrieval toward more accurate and relevant knowledge for MLLM inference. Building on this idea, we propose a new framework, CoVQD-guided RAG (CgRAG), which enables MLLMs to access more comprehensive and coherent external knowledge while benefiting from structured visual-text reasoning guidance, thereby improving generalization and reliability in complex cross-domain VQA scenarios. Extensive experiments on E-VQA, InfoSeek, and OKVQA benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

MetaRA: Metamorphic Robustness Assessment for Multimodal Large Language Model-based Visual Question Answering Systems

Visual Question Answering (VQA), as the representative multimodal task, serves as a key benchmark for evaluating the reasoning capabilities of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). However, existing evaluations largely rely on static datasets and accuracy-based metrics, which fail to capture robustness, consistency, and generalization. Inspired by Metamorphic Testing (MT), we propose Metamorphic Robustness Assessment (MetaRA), a testing framework that employs Metamorphic Relations (MRs) to systematically probe vulnerabilities in MLLM-based VQA systems. MetaRA generates controlled variations of image-question inputs based on specific MRs and evaluates models across diverse conditions. Applying MetaRA to multiple MLLM-based VQA models across different tasks reveals nuanced failure patterns, including sensitivity to linguistic perturbations, over-reliance on superficial visual cues, and deeper weaknesses in multimodal reasoning. Experimental results demonstrate that MetaRA provides richer diagnostic insights than conventional accuracy metrics, exposing failure modes that remain hidden under standard benchmarks. Overall, this work highlights the need for systematic robustness evaluation in VQA and positions metamorphic assessment as a scalable, model-agnostic approach toward trustworthy multimodal AI.

PC-MNet: Dual-Level Congruity Modeling for Multimodal Sarcasm Detection via Polarity-Modulated Attention

Multimodal sarcasm detection, which aims to precisely identify pragmatic incongruities between literal text and nonverbal cues, has gained substantial attention in multimodal understanding. Recent advancements have predominantly relied on naïve similarity-based attention mechanisms and uniform late fusion strategies.Furthermore, given that functional entanglement restricts traditional late fusions, we incorporate a scalar congruity routing mechanism and a prior-guided contextual graph. This mechanism anchors a generalized incongruity manifold through a two-stage asymmetric optimization driven by inconsistency-aware contrastive learning, selectively fusing only the most discriminative multi-granularity evidence. Extensive experiments on the \texttt{MUStARD} benchmark and its spurious-correlation-mitigated balanced datasets demonstrate that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art performance, surpassing the strongest multimodal baseline by a substantial 3.14\% improvement in Macro-F1. By architecturally isolating atomic, composition, and contextual conflicts. This work provides a robust, decoupled paradigm for modeling subtle pragmatic incongruities in human communication.

A new database of Houma Alliance Book ancient handwritten characters and classifier fusion approach

The Houma Alliance Book is one of the national treasures of the Museum in Shanxi Museum Town in China. It has great historical significance in researching ancient history. To date, the research on the Houma Alliance Book has been staying in the identification of paper documents, which is inefficient to identify and difficult to display, study and publicize. Therefore, the digitization of the recognized ancient characters of Houma League can effectively improve the efficiency of recognizing ancient characters and provide more reliable technical support and text data. This paper proposes a new database of Houma Alliance Book ancient handwritten characters and a multi-modal fusion method to recognize ancient handwritten characters. In the database, 297 classes and 3,547 samples of Houma Alliance ancient handwritten characters are collected from the original book collection and by human imitative writing. Furthermore, the decision-level classifier fusion strategy is applied to fuse three well-known deep neural network architectures for ancient handwritten character recognition. Experiments are performed on our new database. The experimental results first provide the baseline result of the new database to the research community and then demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method.

Feature refinement: An expression-specific feature learning and fusion method for micro-expression recognition

Micro-Expression Recognition has become challenging, as it is extremely difficult to extract the subtle facial changes of micro-expressions. Recently, several approaches proposed several expression-shared features algorithms for micro-expression recognition. However, they do not reveal the specific discriminative characteristics, which lead to sub-optimal performance. This paper proposes a novel Feature Refinement ({FR}) with expression-specific feature learning and fusion for micro-expression recognition. It aims to obtain salient and discriminative features for specific expressions and also predict expression by fusing the expression-specific features. FR consists of an expression proposal module with attention mechanism and a classification branch. First, an inception module is designed based on optical flow to obtain expression-shared features. Second, in order to extract salient and discriminative features for specific expression, expression-shared features are fed into an expression proposal module with attention factors and proposal loss. Last, in the classification branch, labels of categories are predicted by a fusion of the expression-specific features. Experiments on three publicly available databases validate the effectiveness of FR under different protocol. Results on public benchmarks demonstrate that our FR provides salient and discriminative information for micro-expression recognition. The results also show our FR achieves better or competitive performance with the existing state-of-the-art methods on micro-expression recognition.

Micro-expression Action Unit Detection with Spatio-temporal Adaptive Pooling

Action Unit (AU) detection plays an important role for facial expression recognition. To the best of our knowledge, there is little research about AU analysis for micro-expressions. In this paper, we focus on AU detection in micro-expressions. Microexpression AU detection is challenging due to the small quantity of micro-expression databases, low intensity, short duration of facial muscle change, and class imbalance. In order to alleviate the problems, we propose a novel Spatio-Temporal Adaptive Pooling (STAP) network for AU detection in micro-expressions. Firstly, STAP is aggregated by a series of convolutional filters of different sizes. In this way, STAP can obtain multi-scale information on spatial and temporal domains. On the other hand, STAP contains less parameters, thus it has less computational cost and is suitable for micro-expression AU detection on very small databases. Furthermore, STAP module is designed to pool discriminative information for micro-expression AUs on spatial and temporal domains. Finally, Focal loss is employed to prevent the vast number of negatives from overwhelming the microexpression AU detector. In experiments, we firstly polish the AU annotations on three commonly used databases. We conduct intensive experiments on three micro-expression databases, and provide several baseline results on micro-expression AU detection. The results show that our proposed approach outperforms the basic Inflated inception-v1 (I3D) in terms of an average of F1- score. We also evaluate the performance of our proposed method on cross-database protocol. It demonstrates that our proposed approach is feasible for cross-database micro-expression AU detection. Importantly, the results on three micro-expression databases and cross-database protocol provide extensive baseline results for future research on micro-expression AU detection.

Plasmonic random laser on an optical fiber tip

Random lasing occurs as the result of a coherent optical feedback from multiple scattering centers. Here, we demonstrate that plasmonic gold nanostars are efficient light scattering centers, exhibiting strong field enhancement at their nanotips, which assists a very narrow bandwidth and highly amplified coherent random lasing with a low lasing threshold. First, by embedding plasmonic gold nanostars in a rhodamine 6G dye gain medium, we observe a series of very narrow random lasing peaks with full-width at half-maximum ~ 0.8 nm. In contrast, free rhodamine 6G dye molecules exhibit only a single amplified spontaneous emission peak with a broader linewidth of 6 nm. The lasing threshold for the dye with gold nanostars is two times lower than that for a free dye. Furthermore, by coating the tip of a single-mode optical fiber with gold nanostars, we demonstrate a collection of random lasing signal through the fiber that can be easily guided and analyzed. Time-resolved measurements show a significant increase in the emission rate above the lasing threshold, indicating a stimulated emission process. Our study provides a method for generating random lasing in the nanoscale with low threshold values that can be easily collected and guided, which promise a range of potential applications in remote sensing, information processing, and on-chip coherent light sources.

Analyzing the Affect of a Group of People Using Multi-modal Framework

Millions of images on the web enable us to explore images from social events such as a family party, thus it is of interest to understand and model the affect exhibited by a group of people in images. But analysis of the affect expressed by multiple people is challenging due to varied indoor and outdoor settings, and interactions taking place between various numbers of people. A few existing works on Group-level Emotion Recognition (GER) have investigated on face-level information. Due to the challenging environments, face may not provide enough information to GER. Relatively few studies have investigated multi-modal GER. Therefore, we propose a novel multi-modal approach based on a new feature description for understanding emotional state of a group of people in an image. In this paper, we firstly exploit three kinds of rich information containing face, upperbody and scene in a group-level image. Furthermore, in order to integrate multiple person's information in a group-level image, we propose an information aggregation method to generate three features for face, upperbody and scene, respectively. We fuse face, upperbody and scene information for robustness of GER against the challenging environments. Intensive experiments are performed on two challenging group-level emotion databases to investigate the role of face, upperbody and scene as well as multi-modal framework. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves very promising performance for GER.

Spontaneous Facial Micro-Expression Recognition using Discriminative Spatiotemporal Local Binary Pattern with an Improved Integral Projection

Recently, there are increasing interests in inferring mirco-expression from facial image sequences. Due to subtle facial movement of micro-expressions, feature extraction has become an important and critical issue for spontaneous facial micro-expression recognition. Recent works usually used spatiotemporal local binary pattern for micro-expression analysis. However, the commonly used spatiotemporal local binary pattern considers dynamic texture information to represent face images while misses the shape attribute of face images. On the other hand, their works extracted the spatiotemporal features from the global face regions, which ignore the discriminative information between two micro-expression classes. The above-mentioned problems seriously limit the application of spatiotemporal local binary pattern on micro-expression recognition. In this paper, we propose a discriminative spatiotemporal local binary pattern based on an improved integral projection to resolve the problems of spatiotemporal local binary pattern for micro-expression recognition. Firstly, we develop an improved integral projection for preserving the shape attribute of micro-expressions. Furthermore, an improved integral projection is incorporated with local binary pattern operators across spatial and temporal domains. Specifically, we extract the novel spatiotemporal features incorporating shape attributes into spatiotemporal texture features. For increasing the discrimination of micro-expressions, we propose a new feature selection based on Laplacian method to extract the discriminative information for facial micro-expression recognition. Intensive experiments are conducted on three availably published micro-expression databases. We compare our method with the state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves promising performance for micro-expression recognition.
