60-nm-span wavelength-tunable vortex fiber laser with intracavity plasmon metasurfaces

Wavelength-tunable vortex fiber lasers that could generate beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) hold great interest in large-capacity optical communications. The wavelength tunability of conventional vortex fiber lasers is however limited by the range of 35 nm due to narrow bandwidth and/or insertion loss of mode conversion components. Optical metasurfaces apart from being compact planar components can flexibly manipulate light with high efficiency in a broad wavelength range. Here, we propose and demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a metasurface-assisted vortex fiber laser that can directly generate OAM beams with changeable topological charges. Due to the designed broadband gap-surface plasmon metasurface, combined with an intracavity tunable filter, the laser enables OAM beam with center wavelength continuously tunable from 1015 nm to 1075 nm, nearly twice of other vortex fiber lasers ever reported. The metasurface can be designed at will to satisfy requirements for either low pump threshold or high slope efficiency of the laser. Furthermore, the cavity-metasurface configuration can be extended to generate higher-order OAM beams or more complex structured beams in different wavelength regions, which greatly broadens the possibilities for developing low-cost and high-quality structured-beam laser sources.

Magnetic molecule tunnel heterojunctions

We characterize molecular magnet heterojunctions in which sublimated CoPc films as thin as 5 nm are sandwiched between transparent conducting bottom-layer indium tin oxide and top-layer soft-landing eutectic GaIn (EGaIn) electrodes. The roughness of the cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) films was determined by atomic force microscopy to be on the order of several nanometers, and crystalline ordering of lying-down planar molecules was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics reveal the onset of a superconducting gap at Tc = 6 K, which together with higher temperature fits to a modified Simmons' model, provide incontrovertible evidence for direct quantum mechanical tunneling processes through the magnetic molecules in our heterojunctions. The voltage dependent features in the differential conductance measurements relate to spin states of single molecules or aggregates of molecules and should prove to be important for quantum information device development.

Period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked lasers

Period-doubling bifurcation is a universal dynamic of nonlinear systems, which has been extensively investigated in laser systems with a single transverse mode. This study presents an experimental observation and theoretical investigation of the period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) multimode fiber lasers. In the period-doubling state, it is observed that the pulse train modulation varies with the transverse-mode, and the output beam profile fluctuates rapidly and periodically. The numerical simulations conducted in this study are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, a simple iterative model is proposed by considering the mode-dependent saturable absorption effect, and the experimental results can be qualitatively interpreted by this model. Based on these results, spatiotemporal saturable absorption is believed to be the key factor for the unique spatiotemporal characteristic of period-doubling bifurcation in multimode lasers. This study contributes to the understanding of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics in STML multimode lasers and to the discovery of novel dynamics in high-dimensional nonlinear systems.
