Measurement of the Bjorken Sum at very low $Q^2$

We present new data on the Bjorken sum $\overline Γ_1^{p-n}(Q^2)$ at 4-momentum transfer $ 0.021 \leq Q^2 \leq 0.496$ GeV$^2$. The data were obtained in two experiments performed at Jefferson Lab: EG4 on polarized protons and deuterons, and E97110 on polarized $^3$He from which neutron data were extracted. The data cover the domain where chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), the leading effective theory of the Strong Force at large distances, is expected to be applicable. We find that our data and the predictions from $χ$EFT are only in marginal agreement. This is somewhat surprising as the contribution from the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is suppressed in this observable, which should make it more reliably predicted by $χ$EFT than quantities in which the $Δ$ contribution is important. The data are also compared to a number of phenomenological models with various degrees of agreement.

Neutral-Current Electroweak Physics and SMEFT Studies at the EIC

We study the potential for precision electroweak (EW) measurements and beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) searches using cross-section asymmetries in neutral-current (NC) deep inelastic scattering at the electron-ion collider (EIC). Our analysis uses a complete and realistic accounting of systematic errors from both theory and experiment and considers the potential of both proton and deuteron beams for a wide range of energies and luminosities. We also consider what can be learned from a possible future positron beam and a potential ten-fold luminosity upgrade of the EIC beyond its initial decade of running. We use the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) framework to parameterize BSM effects and focus on semi-leptonic four-fermion operators, whereas for our precision EW study, we determine how well the EIC can measure the weak mixing angle. New features of our study include the use of an up-to-date detector design of EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) and accurate running conditions of the EIC, the simultaneous fitting of beam polarization uncertainties and Wilson coefficients to improve the sensitivity to SMEFT operators, and the inclusion of the weak mixing angle running in our fit template. We find that the EIC can probe BSM operators at scales competitive with and in many cases exceeding LHC Drell-Yan bounds while simultaneously not suffering from degeneracies between Wilson coefficients.

New Analysis of Dark Matter in Elliptical Galaxies

We investigate a correlation between the dark matter content of elliptical galaxies and their ellipticity that was initially reported in 2014. We use new determinations of dark matter and ellipticities that are posterior to that time. Our data set consists of 237 elliptical galaxies passing a strict set of criteria. We find a relation between the mass-to-light ratio and ellipticity that is well fit by M/L = (14.1 \pm 5.4)?, which agrees with the result reported in 2014.

Accessing weak neutral-current coupling $g_{AA}^{eq}$ using positron and electron beams at Jefferson Lab

Low-energy neutral-current couplings arising in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions can be constrained in lepton scattering off hydrogen or a nuclear fixed target. Recent polarized electron scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab (JLab) have improved the precision in the parity-violating types of effective couplings. On the other hand, the only known way to access the parity-conserving counterparts is to compare scattering cross sections between a lepton and an anti-lepton beam. We review the current knowledge of both types of couplings and how to constrain them. We also present exploratory calculations for a possible measurement of $g_{AA}^{eq}$ using the planned SoLID spectrometer combined with a possible positron beam at JLab.

A Scaler-Based Data Acquisition System for Measuring Parity-Violating Asymmetry in Deep Inelastic Scattering

An experiment that measured the parity-violating asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering was completed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in experimental Hall A. From these asymmetries, a combination of the quark weak axial charge could be extracted with a factor of five improvement in precision over world data. To achieve this, asymmetries at the $10^{-4}$ level needed to be measured at event rates up to 600 kHz and the high pion background typical to deep inelastic scattering experiments needed to be rejected efficiently. A specialized data acquisition (DAQ) system with intrinsic particle identification (PID) was successfully developed and used: The pion contamination in the electron samples was controlled at the order of $2\times 10^{-4}$ or below with an electron efficiency of higher than 91 % during most of the production period of the experiment, the systematic uncertainty in the measured asymmetry due to DAQ deadtime was below 0.5 %, and the statistical quality of the asymmetry measurement agreed with the Gaussian distribution to over five orders of magnitudes. The DAQ system is presented here with an emphasis on its design scheme, the achieved PID performance, deadtime effect and the capability of measuring small asymmetries.
