LensVLM: Selective Context Expansion for Compressed Visual Representation of Text

Vision Language Models (VLMs) offer the exciting possibility of processing text as rendered images, bypassing the need for tokenizing the text into long token sequences. Since VLM image encoders map fixed-size images to a fixed number of visual tokens, varying rendering resolution provides a fine-grained compression knob. However, accuracy deteriorates quickly as compression increases: characters shrink below the vision encoder's effective resolution, making them indistinguishable. To address this, we propose LensVLM, an inference framework and post-training recipe that enables VLMs to scan compressed images, then selectively expand only the relevant images to their uncompressed form via learned tools. Building on Qwen3.5-9B-Base, LensVLM maintains accuracy comparable to the full-text upper bound at 4.3x effective compression and outperforms retrieval-based, text- and visual-compression baselines up to 10.1x effective compression across seven text QA benchmarks. LensVLM also generalizes to multimodal document and code understanding tasks, with the accuracy gain over baselines growing as compression increases. Our analysis validates this approach: training makes visual compression robust to rendering choices, and as compression grows the model increasingly relies on expanded content rather than unreliable visual reading. The analysis also yields practical tool-choice guidance: text expansion is preferable for rendered text, while high-resolution image expansion suits native documents whose layout cues carry task-relevant information.

Auto-scaling Vision Transformers without Training

This work targets automated designing and scaling of Vision Transformers (ViTs). The motivation comes from two pain spots: 1) the lack of efficient and principled methods for designing and scaling ViTs; 2) the tremendous computational cost of training ViT that is much heavier than its convolution counterpart. To tackle these issues, we propose As-ViT, an auto-scaling framework for ViTs without training, which automatically discovers and scales up ViTs in an efficient and principled manner. Specifically, we first design a "seed" ViT topology by leveraging a training-free search process. This extremely fast search is fulfilled by a comprehensive study of ViT's network complexity, yielding a strong Kendall-tau correlation with ground-truth accuracies. Second, starting from the "seed" topology, we automate the scaling rule for ViTs by growing widths/depths to different ViT layers. This results in a series of architectures with different numbers of parameters in a single run. Finally, based on the observation that ViTs can tolerate coarse tokenization in early training stages, we propose a progressive tokenization strategy to train ViTs faster and cheaper. As a unified framework, As-ViT achieves strong performance on classification (83.5% top1 on ImageNet-1k) and detection (52.7% mAP on COCO) without any manual crafting nor scaling of ViT architectures: the end-to-end model design and scaling process cost only 12 hours on one V100 GPU. Optimizing Anchor-based Detectors for Autonomous Driving Scenes

This paper summarizes model improvements and inference-time optimizations for the popular anchor-based detectors in the scenes of autonomous driving. Based on the high-performing RCNN-RS and RetinaNet-RS detection frameworks designed for common detection scenes, we study a set of framework improvements to adapt the detectors to better detect small objects in crowd scenes. Then, we propose a model scaling strategy by scaling input resolution and model size to achieve a better speed-accuracy trade-off curve. We evaluate our family of models on the real-time 2D detection track of the Waymo Open Dataset (WOD). Within the 70 ms/frame latency constraint on a V100 GPU, our largest Cascade RCNN-RS model achieves 76.9% AP/L1 and 70.1% AP/L2, attaining the new state-of-the-art on WOD real-time 2D detection. Our fastest RetinaNet-RS model achieves 6.3 ms/frame while maintaining a reasonable detection precision at 50.7% AP/L1 and 42.9% AP/L2.

SpineNet: Learning Scale-Permuted Backbone for Recognition and Localization

Convolutional neural networks typically encode an input image into a series of intermediate features with decreasing resolutions. While this structure is suited to classification tasks, it does not perform well for tasks requiring simultaneous recognition and localization (e.g., object detection). The encoder-decoder architectures are proposed to resolve this by applying a decoder network onto a backbone model designed for classification tasks. In this paper, we argue encoder-decoder architecture is ineffective in generating strong multi-scale features because of the scale-decreased backbone. We propose SpineNet, a backbone with scale-permuted intermediate features and cross-scale connections that is learned on an object detection task by Neural Architecture Search. Using similar building blocks, SpineNet models outperform ResNet-FPN models by ~3% AP at various scales while using 10-20% fewer FLOPs. In particular, SpineNet-190 achieves 52.5% AP with a MaskR-CNN detector and achieves 52.1% AP with a RetinaNet detector on COCO for a single model without test-time augmentation, significantly outperforms prior art of detectors. SpineNet can transfer to classification tasks, achieving 5% top-1 accuracy improvement on a challenging iNaturalist fine-grained dataset.
