Approaching the Fundamental Limit of Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexing Through a Hologram Metasurface

Establishing and approaching the fundamental limit of orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing are necessary and increasingly urgent for current multiple-input multiple-output research. In this work, we elaborate the fundamental limit in terms of independent scattering channels (or degrees of freedom of scattered fields) through angular-spectral analysis, in conjunction with a rigorous Green function method. The scattering channel limit is universal for arbitrary spatial mode multiplexing, which is launched by a planar electromagnetic device, such as antenna, metasurface, etc, with a predefined physical size. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the limit by a metasurface hologram that transforms orthogonal OAM modes to plane-wave modes scattered at critically separated angular-spectral regions. Particularly, a minimax optimization algorithm is applied to suppress angular spectrum aliasing, achieving good performances in both full-wave simulation and experimental measurement at microwave frequencies. This work offers a theoretical upper bound and corresponding approach route for engineering designs of OAM multiplexing.

A Compact Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Based on Multimode Plane Spiral OAM

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted great interest in the past few decades due to its helical phase characteristics. It has been proved that Plane spiral OAM (PSOAM) has potential in pattern reconfiguration of azimuthal domain because it solves the difficulty of mode superposition caused by different main lobe directions of different modes. However, the absence of a compact high-purity multimode PSOAM antenna hinders the development of PSOAM applications. In this paper, a compact high-purity 8-mode PSOAM antenna consisting of a coaxial resonator group (CRG) and a rotating parabolic reflector (RPR) is designed. It works in the X-band with the bandwidth of 140 MHz, and its efficiency is greater than 90$\%$. Amplitude and phase of each PSOAM beam generated by this antenna can be controlled independently owing to its feed network and separate resonators design, hence any target pattern in azimuthal domain can be approximately reconfigured by modes weighting. The simulation and experiment results show that this antenna can make the PSOAM based pattern configuration possible, which will have potential in the OAM based applications.

Broadband Enhancement of On-chip Single Photon Extraction via Tilted Hyperbolic Metamaterials

A fundamental building block for on-chip quantum photonics is a single-photon source with high repetition rates, which can enable many applications such as high-speed quantum communication and quantum information processing. Ideally, such single photon sources would then require a large on-chip photon extraction decay rate, namely the rate of excited photons coupled into nanofibers or waveguides, over a broad spectral range. However, this goal has remained elusive till date. Here we propose a feasible scheme to enhance the on-chip photon extraction decay rate of quantum emitters, through the tilting of the optical axis of hyperbolic metamaterials with respect to the end-facet of nanofibers. Importantly, the revealed scheme is applicable to arbitrarily orientated quantum emitters over a broad spectral range, e.g., up to ~80 nm for visible light. The underlying physics relies on the emerging unique feature of hyperbolic metamaterials if their optical axis is judiciously tilted. That is, their supported high-k (i.e., wavevector) hyperbolic eigenmodes, which are intrinsically confined inside them if their optical axis is un-tilted, can now become momentum-matched with the guided modes of nanofibers, and more importantly, they can safely couple into nanofibers almost without reflection.

OAM Mode-Group Generation Method: Partial Arc Transmitting Scheme

A partial slotted curved waveguide leaky-wave antenna which can generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-groups (MG) with high equivalent OAM order negative and positive 40 at 60 GHz is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna with partial slotting is designed according to the circular traveling-wave antenna which can generate single conventional OAM wave, so it can be regarded as partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme compared with the full 2pi aperture slotting of the circular traveling-wave antenna. The full-wave simulation results show that the generated OAM MGs present a high gain beam with a helical phase distribution. This method may lead to novel applications for next generation communication and radar system.

Theoretical analysis of the non-uniform OAM source based on an equivalent source transformation

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has gradually become a research hotspot in radar, communication and other fields because of its phase distribution. However it encounters some problems in the real practice owing to its inherent characteristics. Recently OAM mode group has been proposed to solve these problems. In this paper, a non-uniform OAM source is used to generate the OAM mode-group (MG) directly. The radiation field is analyzed based on an equivalent source transformation. Taking the partial arc transmitting (PAT) scheme as an example, the non-uniform source is equivalenced as a group of uniform OAM sources by calculated its Fourier transform. This work provides theoretical guidance for the design of non-uniform OAM antenna in the RF domain.

Graphene induced mode bifurcation at low input power

We study analytically the plasmonic modes in the graphene-coated dielectric nanowire, based on the explicit form of nonlinear surface conductivity of graphene. The propagation constants of different plasmonic modes can be tuned by the input power at the order of a few tenths of mW. The lower and upper mode bifurcation branches are connected at the limitation value of the input power. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity of graphene, the dispersion curves of plasmonic modes at different input powers form an energy band, which is in sharp contrast with the single dispersion curve in the limit of zero input power.

Concealing arbitrary objects remotely with multi-folded transformation optics

An invisibility cloak that can hide an arbitrary object external to the cloak itself has not been devised before. In this Letter, we introduce a novel way to design a remote cloaking device that makes any object located at a certain distance invisible. This is accomplished using multi-folded transformation optics to remotely generate a hidden region around the object that no field can penetrate and that does not disturb the far-field scattering electromagnetic field. As a result, any object in the hidden region can stay in position or move freely within that region and remain invisible. Our idea is further extended in order to design a remote illusion optics that can transform any arbitrary object into another one. Unlike other cloaking methods, this method would require no knowledge of the details of the object itself. The proposed multi-folded transformation optics will be crucial in the design of remote devices in a variety of contexts.

Local topological charge analysis of electromagnetic vortex beam based on empirical mode decomposition

The topological charge of an electromagnetic vortex beam depends on its wavefront helicity. For mixed vortex beams composed of several different coaxial vortices, the topological charge spectrum can be obtained by Fourier transform. However, the vortex beam is generally divergent and imperfect. It makes it significant to investigate the local topological charges, especially in radio frequency regime. Fourier transform based methods are restrained by the uncertainty principle and cannot achieve high angular resolution and mode resolution simultaneously. In this letter, an analysis method for local topological charges of vortex beams is presented based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). From EMD, the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can be obtained to construct the bases of the electromagnetic wave, and each local topological charge can be respectively defined. With this method the local value achieves both high resolution of azimuth angle and topological charge, meanwhile the amplitudes of each OAM modes are presented as well. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the EMD based method.

Natural Light Cloaking for Aquatic and Terrestrial Creatures

A cloak that can hide living creatures from sight is a common feature of mythology but still remains unrealized as a practical device. To preserve the phase of wave, the previous cloaking solution proposed by Pendry \emph{et al.} required transforming electromagnetic space around the hidden object in such a way that the rays bending around it have to travel much faster than those passing it by. The difficult phase preservation requirement is the main obstacle for building a broadband polarization insensitive cloak for large objects. Here, we suggest a simplifying version of Pendry's cloak by abolishing the requirement for phase preservation as irrelevant for observation in incoherent natural light with human eyes that are phase and polarization insensitive. This allows the cloak design to be made in large scale using commonly available materials and we successfully report cloaking living creatures, a cat and a fish, in front of human eyes.

Experimental demonstration of a free space cylindrical cloak without superluminal propagation

We experimentally demonstrated an alternative approach of invisibility cloaking that can combine technical advantages of all current major cloaking strategies in a unified manner and thus can solve bottlenecks of individual strategies. A broadband cylindrical invisibility cloak in free space is designed based on scattering cancellation (the approach of previous plasmonic cloaking), and implemented with anisotropic metamaterials (a fundamental property of singular-transformation cloaks). Particularly, non-superluminal propagation of electromagnetic waves, a superior advantage of non-Euclidian-transformation cloaks constructed with complex branch cuts, is inherited in this design, and thus is the reason of its relatively broad bandwidth. This demonstration provides the possibility for future practical implementation of cloaking devices at large scales in free space.
