Polarization-Differential Loss Enabled High Polarization Extinction in Hollow-Core Fibers

Delivering a well defined state of polarization over hollow core fibres (HCFs) is pivotal for next generation ultra stable photonic systems. Yet in all existing HCFs, whether birefringent or not, their polarization extinction ratio (PER) rapidly deteriorates during propagation or under mechanical disturbance, leaving no practical high and stable PER solution. Here, we break this impasse by embedding a polarization differential loss (PDL) mechanism directly into the cladding architecture.

Fermi liquid behavior and colossal magnetoresistance in layered MoOCl2

A characteristic of a Fermi liquid is the T^2 dependence of its resistivity, sometimes referred to as the Baber law. However, for most metals, this behavior is only restricted to very low temperatures, usually below 20 K. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that for the single-crystal van der Waals layered material MoOCl2, the Baber law holds in a wide temperature range up to ~120 K, indicating that the electron-electron scattering plays a dominant role in this material. Combining with the specific heat measurement, we find that the modified Kadowaki-Woods ratio of the material agrees well with many other strongly correlated metals. Furthermore, in the magneto-transport measurement, a colossal magneto-resistance is observed, which reaches ~350% at 9 T and displays no sign of saturation. With the help of first-principles calculations, we attribute this behavior to the presence of open orbits on the Fermi surface. We also suggest that the dominance of electron-electron scattering is related to an incipient charge density wave state of the material. Our results establish MoOCl2 as a strongly correlated metal and shed light on the underlying physical mechanism, which may open a new path for exploring the effects of electron-electron interaction in van der Waals layered structures.

Concept for a Future Super Proton-Proton Collider

Following the discovery of the Higgs boson at LHC, new large colliders are being studied by the international high-energy community to explore Higgs physics in detail and new physics beyond the Standard Model. In China, a two-stage circular collider project CEPC-SPPC is proposed, with the first stage CEPC (Circular Electron Positron Collier, a so-called Higgs factory) focused on Higgs physics, and the second stage SPPC (Super Proton-Proton Collider) focused on new physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper discusses this second stage.

Investigation of target in C-ADS and IAEA ADS benchmark

The spatial and energy distribution of spallation neutrons have an effect on the performance of Accelerator Driven Subcritical systems. In this work, the spatial, energy distribution of spallation neutrons and the effect of these factors on proton efficiency was studied. When the radius of spallation region increases, backward neutrons were found to have a rather big ratio and have a positive effect on proton efficiency. By making better use of these neutrons, we may increase the radius of target to satisfy some other requirements in the design of subcritical core.
