Optical trapping of nanoparticles in superfluid helium

Optical tweezers, the three-dimensional confinement of a nanoparticle by a strongly focused beam of light, have been widely employed in investigating biomaterial nanomechanics, nanoscopic fluid properties, and ultrasensitive detections in various environments such as inside living cells, at gigapascal pressure, and under high vacuum. However, the cryogenic operation of solid-state-particle optical tweezers is poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate the optical trapping of metallic and dielectric nanoparticles in superfluid helium below 2 K, which is two orders of magnitude lower than in the previous experiments. We prepare the nanoparticles via in-situ laser ablation. The nanoparticles are stably trapped with a single laser beam tightly focused in the superfluid helium. Our method provides a new approach for studying nanoscopic quantum hydrodynamic effects and interactions between quantum fluids and classical objects.

Precise Local Estimates for Differential Equations driven by Fractional Brownian Motion: Elliptic Case

This article is concerned with stochastic differential equations driven by a $d$ dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>1/4$, understood in the rough paths sense. Whenever the coefficients of the equation satisfy a uniform ellipticity condition, we establish a sharp local estimate on the associated control distance function and a sharp local lower estimate on the density of the solution.

Precise Local Estimates for Differential Equations driven by Fractional Brownian Motion: Hypoelliptic Case

This article is concerned with stochastic differential equations driven by a $d$ dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>1/4$, understood in the rough paths sense. Whenever the coefficients of the equation satisfy a uniform hypoellipticity condition, we establish a sharp local estimate on the associated control distance function and a sharp local lower estimate on the density of the solution. Our methodology relies heavily on the rough paths structure of the equation.

The Signature of a Rough Path: Uniqueness

In the context of controlled differential equations, the signature is the exponential function on paths. B. Hambly and T. Lyons proved that the signature of a bounded variation path is trivial if and only if the path is tree-like. We extend Hambly-Lyons' result and their notion of tree-like paths to the setting of weakly geometric rough paths in a Banach space. At the heart of our approach is a new definition for reduced path and a lemma identifying the reduced path group with the space of signatures.

Quasi-sure Existence of Gaussian Rough Paths and Large Deviation Principles for Capacities

We construct a quasi-sure version (in the sense of Malliavin) of geometric rough paths associated with a Gaussian process with long-time memory. As an application we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for capacities for such Gaussian rough paths. Together with Lyons' universal limit theorem, our results yield immediately the corresponding results for pathwise solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by such Gaussian process in the sense of rough paths. Moreover, our LDP result implies the result of Yoshida on the LDP for capacities over the abstract Wiener space associated with such Gaussian process.

Simple Piecewise Geodesic Interpolation of Simple and Jordan Curves with Applications

We explicitly construct simple, piecewise minimizing geodesic, arbitrarily fine interpolation of simple and Jordan curves on a Riemannian manifold. In particular, a finite sequence of partition points can be specified in advance to be included in our construction. Then we present two applications of our main results: the generalized Green's theorem and the uniqueness of signature for planar Jordan curves with finite p-variation for 1<=p<2.

The Uniqueness of Signature Problem in the Non-Markov Setting

The goal of this paper is to simplify and strengthen the Le Jan-Qian approximation scheme of studying the uniqueness of signature problem to the non-Markov setting. We establish a general framework for a class of multidimensional stochastic processes over [0,1] under which with probability one, the signature (the collection of iterated path integrals in the sense of rough paths) is well-defined and determines the sample paths of the process up to reparametrization. In particular, by using the Malliavin calculus we show that our method applies to a class of Gaussian processes including fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the Brownian bridge.

G-Brownian Motion as Rough Paths and Differential Equations Driven by G-Brownian Motion

The present paper is devoted to the study of sample paths of G-Brownian motion and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion from the view of rough path theory. As the starting point, we show that quasi-surely, sample paths of G-Brownian motion can be enhanced to the second level in a canonical way so that they become geometric rough paths of roughness 2 < p < 3. This result enables us to introduce the notion of rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by G-Brownian motion in the pathwise sense under the general framework of rough paths. Next we establish the fundamental relation between SDEs and RDEs driven by G-Brownian motion. As an application, we introduce the notion of SDEs on a differentiable manifold driven by GBrownian motion and construct solutions from the RDE point of view by using pathwise localization technique. This is the starting point of introducing G-Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold, based on the idea of Eells-Elworthy-Malliavin. The last part of this paper is devoted to such construction for a wide and interesting class of G-functions whose invariant group is the orthogonal group. We also develop the Euler-Maruyama approximation for SDEs driven by G-Brownian motion of independent interest.

On the Finite Dimensional Joint Characteristic Function of Lévy's Stochastic Area Processes

The goal of this paper is to derive a formula for the finite dimensional joint characteristic function (the Fourier transform of the finite dimensional distribution) of the coupled process ${(W_{t},L_{t}^{A}):t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$, where $\{W_{t}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and $\{L_{t}^{A}:t\in \lbrack 0,\infty)}$ is the generalized $d$-dimensional L$\acute{e}$vy's stochastic area process associated to a $d\times d$ matrix $A.$ Here $A$ need not be skew-symmetric, and in our computation we allow $A$ to vary. The problem finally reduces to the solution of a recursive system of symmetric matrix Riccati equations and a system of independent first order linear matrix ODEs. As an example, the two dimensional Lévy's stochastic area process is studied in detail.
