Achievable connectivities of Fatou components for a family of singular perturbations

In this paper we study the connectivity of Fatou components for maps in a large family of singular perturbations. We prove that, for some parameters inside the family, the dynamical planes for the corresponding maps present Fatou components of arbitrarily large connectivity and we determine precisely these connectivities. In particular, these results extend the ones obtained in [Can17, Can18].

Topological properties of the immediate basins of attraction for the secant method

We study the discrete dynamical system defined on a subset of $R^2$ given by the iterates of the secant method applied to a real polynomial $p$. Each simple real root $α$ of $p$ has associated its basin of attraction $\mathcal A(α)$ formed by the set of points converging towards the fixed point $(α,α)$ of $S$. We denote by $\mathcal A^*(α)$ its immediate basin of attraction, that is, the connected component of $\mathcal A(α)$ which contains $(α,α)$. We focus on some topological properties of $\mathcal A^*(α)$, when $α$ is an internal real root of $p$. More precisely, we show the existence of a 4-cycle in $\partial \mathcal A^*(α)$ and we give conditions on $p$ to guarantee the simple connectivity of $\mathcal A^*(α)$.

Global dynamics of the real secant method

We investigate the root finding algorithm given by the secant method applied to a real polynomial $p$ as a discrete dynamical system defined on $\mathbb R^2$. We study the shape and distribution of the basins of attraction associated to the roots of $p$, and we also show the existence of other stable dynamics that might affect the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally we extend the secant map to the punctured torus $\mathbb T^2_{\infty}$ which allow us to better understand the dynamics of the secant method near $\infty$ and facilitate the use of the secant map as a method to find all roots of a polynomial.

Fatou components and singularities of meromorphic functions

We prove several results concerning the relative position of points in the postsingular set $P(f)$ of a meromorphic map $f$ and the boundary of a Baker domain or the successive iterates of a wandering component. For Baker domains we answer a question of Mihaljević-Brandt and Rempe-Gillen. For wandering domains we show that if the iterates $U_n$ of such a domain have uniformly bounded diameter, then there exists a sequence of postsingular values $p_n$ such that ${\rm dist}(p_n,\partial U_n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We also prove that if $U_n \cap P(f)=\emptyset$ and the postsingular set of $f$ lies at a positive distance from the Julia set (in $\mathbb C$) then any sequence of iterates of wandering domains must contain arbitrarily large disks. This allows to exclude the existence of wandering domains for some meromorphic maps with infinitely many poles and unbounded set of singular values.

Connectivity of Julia sets of Newton maps: A unified approach

In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for all situations alike.

Absorbing sets and Baker domains for holomorphic maps

We consider holomorphic maps $f: U \to U$ for a hyperbolic domain $U$ in the complex plane, such that the iterates of $f$ converge to a boundary point $ζ$ of $U$. By a previous result of the authors, for such maps there exist nice absorbing domains $W \subset U$. In this paper we show that $W$ can be chosen to be simply connected, if $f$ has parabolic I type in the sense of the Baker--Pommerenke--Cowen classification of its lift by a universal covering (and $ζ$ is not an isolated boundary point of $U$). Moreover, we provide counterexamples for other types of the map $f$ and give an exact characterization of parabolic I type in terms of the dynamical behaviour of $f$.

Accesses to infinity from Fatou components

We study the boundary behaviour of a meromorphic map $f: \mathbb C \to \widehat{\mathbb C}$ on its invariant simply connected Fatou component $U$. To this aim, we develop the theory of accesses to boundary points of $U$ and their relation to the dynamics of $f$. In particular, we establish a correspondence between invariant accesses from $U$ to infinity or weakly repelling points of $f$ and boundary fixed points of the associated inner function on the unit disc. We apply our results to describe the accesses to infinity from invariant Fatou components of the Newton maps.

Wandering domains for composition of entire functions

C. Bishop has constructed an example of an entire function f in Eremenko-Lyubich class with at least two grand orbits of oscillating wandering domains. In this paper we show that his example has exactly two such orbits, that is, f has no unexpected wandering domains. We apply this result to the classical problem of relating the Julia sets of composite functions with the Julia set of its members. More precisely, we show the existence of two entire maps f and g in Eremenko-Lyubich class such that the Fatou set of f compose with g has a wandering domain, while all Fatou components of f or g are preperiodic. This complements a result of A. Singh and results of W. Bergweiler and A. Hinkkanen related to this problem.

Brushing the hairs of transcendental entire functions

Let f be a hyperbolic transcendental entire function of finite order in the Eremenko-Lyubich class (or a finite composition of such maps), and suppose that f has a unique Fatou component. We show that the Julia set of $f$ is a Cantor bouquet; i.e. is ambiently homeomorphic to a straight brush in the sense of Aarts and Oversteegen. In particular, we show that any two such Julia sets are ambiently homeomorphic. We also show that if $f\in\B$ has finite order (or is a finite composition of such maps), but is not necessarily hyperbolic, then the Julia set of f contains a Cantor bouquet. As part of our proof, we describe, for an arbitrary function $f\in\B$, a natural compactification of the dynamical plane by adding a "circle of addresses" at infinity.

On the connectivity of the Julia sets of meromorphic functions

We prove that every transcendental meromorphic map f with a disconnected Julia set has a weakly repelling fixed point. This implies that the Julia set of Newton's method for finding zeroes of an entire map is connected. Moreover, extending a result of Cowen for holomorphic self-maps of the disc, we show the existence of absorbing domains for holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic regions whose iterates tend to a boundary point. In particular, the results imply that periodic Baker domains of Newton's method for entire maps are simply connected, which solves a well-known open question.

Non-landing hairs in Sierpinski curve Julia sets of transcendental entire maps

We consider the family of transcendental entire maps given by $f_a(z)=a(z-(1-a))\exp(z+a)$ where $a$ is a complex parameter. Every map has a superattracting fixed point at $z=-a$ and an asymptotic value at $z=0$. For $a>1$ the Julia set of $f_a$ is known to be homeomorphic to the Sierpiński universal curve, thus containing embedded copies of any one-dimensional plane continuum. In this paper we study subcontinua of the Julia set that can be defined in a combinatorial manner. In particular, we show the existence of non-landing hairs with prescribed combinatorics embedded in the Julia set for all parameters $a\geq 3$. We also study the relation between non-landing hairs and the immediate basin of attraction of $z=-a$. Even as each non-landing hair accumulates onto the boundary of the immediate basin at a single point, its closure, nonetheless, becomes an indecomposable subcontinuum of the Julia set.
