Dynamical mechanism behind ghosts unveiled in a map complexification

Complex systems such as ecosystems, electronic circuits, lasers or chemical reactions can be modelled by dynamical systems which typically experience bifurcations. Transients typically suffer extremely long delays at the vicinity of bifurcations and it is also known that these transients follow scaling laws as the bifurcation parameter gets closer the bifurcation value in deterministic systems. The mechanisms involved in local bifurcations are well-known. However, for saddle-node bifurcations, the relevant dynamics after the bifurcation occur in the complex phase space. Hence, the mechanism responsible for the delays and the associated inverse-square root scaling law for this bifurcation can be better understood by looking at the dynamics in the complex space. We follow this approach and complexify a simple ecological system undergoing a saddle-node bifurcation. The discrete model describes a biological system with facilitation (cooperation) under habitat destruction for species with non-overlapping generations. We study the complex (as opposed to real) dynamics once the bifurcation has occurred. We identify the fundamental mechanism causing these long delays (called ghosts), given by two repellers in the complex space. Such repellers appear to be extremely close to the real line, thus forming a narrow channel close to the two new fixed points and responsible for the slow passage of the orbits, which remains tangible in the real numbers phase space. We analytically provide the relation between the inverse square-root scaling law and the multipliers of these repellers. We finally prove that the same phenomenon occurs for more general i.e., non-necessarily polynomial, models.

Fatou components and singularities of meromorphic functions

We prove several results concerning the relative position of points in the postsingular set $P(f)$ of a meromorphic map $f$ and the boundary of a Baker domain or the successive iterates of a wandering component. For Baker domains we answer a question of Mihaljević-Brandt and Rempe-Gillen. For wandering domains we show that if the iterates $U_n$ of such a domain have uniformly bounded diameter, then there exists a sequence of postsingular values $p_n$ such that ${\rm dist}(p_n,\partial U_n)\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We also prove that if $U_n \cap P(f)=\emptyset$ and the postsingular set of $f$ lies at a positive distance from the Julia set (in $\mathbb C$) then any sequence of iterates of wandering domains must contain arbitrarily large disks. This allows to exclude the existence of wandering domains for some meromorphic maps with infinitely many poles and unbounded set of singular values.

Connectivity of Julia sets of Newton maps: A unified approach

In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for all situations alike.

Hyperbolic entire functions with bounded Fatou components

We show that an invariant Fatou component of a hyperbolic transcendental entire function is a bounded Jordan domain (in fact, a quasidisc) if and only if it contains only finitely many critical points and no asymptotic curves. We use this theorem to prove criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets for hyperbolic entire functions, and give examples that demonstrate that our results are optimal. A particularly strong dichotomy is obtained in the case of a function with precisely two critical values.

On a Family of Rational Perturbations of the Doubling Map

The goal of this paper is to investigate the parameter plane of a rational family of perturbations of the doubling map given by the Blaschke products $B_a(z)=z^3\frac{z-a}{1-\bar{a}z}$. First we study the basic properties of these maps such as the connectivity of the Julia set as a function of the parameter $a$. We use techniques of quasiconformal surgery to explore the relation between certain members of the family and the degree 4 polynomials $\left(\overline{\overline{z}^2+c}\right)^2+c$. In parameter space, we classify the different hyperbolic components according to the critical orbits and we show how to parametrize those of disjoint type.

Tongues in Degree 4 Blaschke Products

The goal of this paper is to investigate the family of Blasche products $B_a(z)=z^3\frac{z-a}{1-\bar{a}z}$, which is a rational family of perturbations of the doubling map. We focus on the tongue-like sets which appear in its parameter plane. We first study their basic topological properties and afterwords we investigate how bifurcations take place in a neighborhood of their tips. Finally we see how the period one tongue extends beyond its natural domain of definition.

Absorbing sets and Baker domains for holomorphic maps

We consider holomorphic maps $f: U \to U$ for a hyperbolic domain $U$ in the complex plane, such that the iterates of $f$ converge to a boundary point $ζ$ of $U$. By a previous result of the authors, for such maps there exist nice absorbing domains $W \subset U$. In this paper we show that $W$ can be chosen to be simply connected, if $f$ has parabolic I type in the sense of the Baker--Pommerenke--Cowen classification of its lift by a universal covering (and $ζ$ is not an isolated boundary point of $U$). Moreover, we provide counterexamples for other types of the map $f$ and give an exact characterization of parabolic I type in terms of the dynamical behaviour of $f$.

Accesses to infinity from Fatou components

We study the boundary behaviour of a meromorphic map $f: \mathbb C \to \widehat{\mathbb C}$ on its invariant simply connected Fatou component $U$. To this aim, we develop the theory of accesses to boundary points of $U$ and their relation to the dynamics of $f$. In particular, we establish a correspondence between invariant accesses from $U$ to infinity or weakly repelling points of $f$ and boundary fixed points of the associated inner function on the unit disc. We apply our results to describe the accesses to infinity from invariant Fatou components of the Newton maps.

Wandering domains for composition of entire functions

C. Bishop has constructed an example of an entire function f in Eremenko-Lyubich class with at least two grand orbits of oscillating wandering domains. In this paper we show that his example has exactly two such orbits, that is, f has no unexpected wandering domains. We apply this result to the classical problem of relating the Julia sets of composite functions with the Julia set of its members. More precisely, we show the existence of two entire maps f and g in Eremenko-Lyubich class such that the Fatou set of f compose with g has a wandering domain, while all Fatou components of f or g are preperiodic. This complements a result of A. Singh and results of W. Bergweiler and A. Hinkkanen related to this problem.

Homeomorphisms between Limbs of the Mandelbrot Set

Given $p/q$ and $p'/q$ both irreducible, we construct homeomorphisms between the $p/q$ and the $p'/q$ limbs of the Mandelbrot set. This homeomorphisms are not compatible with the dynamics. Moreover, the filled Julia sets of corresponding parameter values are also homeomorphic. All the homeomorphisms above have counterparts on the combinatorial level relating corresponding external arguments, in the dynamical planes as well as in the parameter spaces. Assuming local connectivity of $M$ we may conclude that the constructed homeomorphisms between limbs are compatible with the embeddings of the limbs in the plane.
