Photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ probed by time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy

Intense laser pulses have recently emerged as a tool to tune between different orders in complex quantum materials. Among different light-induced phenomena, transient superconductivity far above the equilibrium transition temperature in cuprates is particularly attractive. Key to those experiments was the resonant pumping of specific phonon modes, which was believed to induce superconducting phase coherence by suppressing the competing orders or modifying the structure slightly. Here, we present a comprehensive study of photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We find that upon photo-excitations, Josephson plasma edge in superconducting state is initially removed accompanied by quasiparticle excitations, and subsequently reappears at frequency lower than the static plasma edge within short time. In normal state, an enhancement or weaker edge-like shape is indeed induced by pump pulses in the reflectance spectrum accompanied by simultaneous rises in both real and imaginary parts of conductivity. We compare the pump-induced effects between near- and mid-infrared excitations and exclude phonon pumping as a scenario for the photo-induced effects above. We further elaborate the transient responses in normal state are unlikely to be explained by photo-induced superconductivity.

Fully Gapped s-wave-like Superconducting State and Electronic Structures in the Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 Single Crystals with Strong Spin-orbital Coupling

Due to the large spin-orbital coupling in the layered 5d-transition metal chalcogenides compound, the occurrence of superconductivity in Ir2-xPdxTe2 offers a good chance to search for possible topological superconducting states in this system. We did comprehensive studies on the superconducting properties and electronic structures of single crystalline Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 samples. The superconducting gap size, critical fields and coherence length along different directions were experimentally determined. Macroscopic bulk measurements and microscopic low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy results suggest that Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 possesses a BCS-like s-wave state. No sign of zero bias conductance peak were found in the vortex core at 0.4K.

Strain-induced enhancement of the electron energy relaxation in strongly correlated superconductors

We use femtosecond optical spectroscopy to systematically measure the primary energy relaxation rate k1 of photoexcited carriers in cuprate and pnictide superconductors. We find that k1 increases monotonically with increased negative strain in the crystallographic a-axis. Generally, the Bardeen-Shockley deformation potential theorem and, specifically, pressure-induced Raman shifts reported in the literature suggest that increased negative strain enhances electron-phonon coupling, which implies that the observed direct correspondence between a and k1 is consistent with the canonical assignment of k1 to the electron-phonon interaction. The well-known non-monotonic dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc on the a-axis strain is also reflected in a systematic dependence Tc on k1, with a distinct maximum at intermediate values (~16 ps-1 at room temperature). The empirical non-monotonic systematic variation of Tc with the strength of the electron-phonon interaction provides us with unique insight into the role of electron-phonon interaction in relation to the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity as a crossover phenomenon.

Carrier density dependence of the magnetic properties in iron-doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator

The electronic and magnetic properties of iron-doped topological insulator Bi1.84-xFe0.16CaxSe3 single crystals were studied. By co-doping Fe and Ca atoms, ferromagnetic bulk states with different carrier density (from n-type to p-type) were obtained. Effective magnetic moments for each Fe atom was estimated as small as about 0.07$μ$B. Magnetic and non-magnetic phases separation was observed in all samples. Our results suggest that the bulk ferromagnetism in Fe-doped Bi2Se3 is not intrinsic and regardless of carrier density.

Ill-posedness of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\dot{F}^{-1,q}_{\infty}({R}^3)$

In this paper, authors show the ill-posedness of 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the critical Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $ \dot{F}^{-1,q}_{\infty} (\mathbb{R}^3) $ for any $ q>2 $ in the sense that arbitrarily small initial data of $ \dot{F}^{-1,q}_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^3) $ can lead the corresponding solution to become arbitrarily large after an arbitrarily short time. In view of the well-posedness of 3D-incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $ BMO^{-1} $ (i.e. the Triebel-Lizorkin space $ \dot{F}^{-1,2}_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^3) $) by Koch and Tataru, our work completes a dichotomy of well-posedness and ill-posedness in the Triebel-Lizorkin space framework depending on $ q=2 $ or $ q>2 $.

Mechanisms of nonthermal destruction of the superconducting state and melting of the charge-density-wave state by femtosecond laser pulses

The processes leading to nonthermal condensate vaporization and charge-density wave (CDW) melting with femtosecond laser pulses is systematically investigated in different materials. We find that vaporization is relatively slow (tau_v ~ 1 ps) and inefficient in superconductors, exhibiting a strong systematic dependence of the vaporization energy Uv on Tc. In contrast, melting of CDW order proceeds rapidly (tau_m = 50 ~ 200 fs) and more efficiently. A quantitative model describing the observed systematic behavior in superconductors is proposed based on a phonon-mediated quasi-particle (QP) bottleneck mechanism. In contrast, Fermi surface disruption by hot QPs is proposed to be responsible for CDW state melting.

YBCO-buffered NdBCO film with higher thermal stability in seeding REBCO Growth

In this work, we report a strengthened superheating effect caused by a buffering YBa2Cu3Oy (Y123 or YBCO) layer in the Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (Nd123 or NdBCO) thin film with MgO substrate (i.e., NdBCO/YBCO/MgO thin film). In the cold-seeding melt-textured (MT) growth, the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film presented an even higher superheating level, about 20 °C higher than that of non-buffered NdBCO film (i.e., NdBCO/MgO film). Using this NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film as seeds and undergoing a maximum processing temperature (Tmax) up to 1120 °C, we succeeded in growing various RE1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (REBCO, RE=rare elements) bulk superconductors, including Gd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (GdBCO), Sm1+xBa2-xCu3O7-y (SmBCO) and NdBCO that have high peritectic temperatures (Tp). The pole figure (X-Ray ϕ-scan) measurement reveals that the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film has better in-plane alignment than the NdBCO/MgO film, indicating that the induced intermediate layer improves the crystallinity of the NdBCO film, which could be the main origin of the enhanced thermal stability. In short, possessing higher thermal stability and enduring a higher Tmax in the MT process, the NdBCO/YBCO/MgO film is beneficial to the growth of bulk superconductors in two aspects: (1) broad application for high-Tp REBCO materials; (2) effective suppression against heterogeneous nucleation, which is of great assistance in growing large and high-performance REBCO crystals.

Anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters and intrinsic pinning in low-level Pr-doped YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) single crystals

The influence of low-level Pr substitution in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O(7-delta) single crystals on the anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters was investigated by torque magnetometry in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. An averaged anisotropy parameter, γ, of 7.4 was found and no influence of the Pr ion concentration on γwas observed up to a Pr content of 2.4%. A pronounced maximum at angles between 0.5 and 1 degree out of the ab-plane was observed in all crystals in the irreversible angular dependence of the torque. This maximum is attributed to intrinsic pinning associated with kinked vortices. The variation of the irreversible torque with the substitution level indicates the influence of the Pr content on pinning within the CuO2 planes, even though the anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters is not affected.

Electron-Phonon Coupling in High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductors Determined from Electron Relaxation Rates

We determined electronic relaxation times via pump-probe optical spectroscopy using sub-15 fs pulses for the normal state of two different cuprate superconductors. We show that the primary relaxation process is the electron-phonon interaction and extract a measure of its strength, the second moment of the Eliashberg functionλ<ω^{2}>=800\pm200 meV^{2} for La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4} and λ<ω^{2}>=400\pm100 meV^{2} for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}. These values suggest a possible fundamental role of the electron-phonon interaction in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Evidence for a temperature dependent anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters in underdoped SmBa2Cu3Ox

The temperature dependence of the anisotropy of the superconducting state parameters, γ, was studied by torque magnetometry for the high temperature superconductor SmBa2Cu3Ox in magnetic fields of up to 9 T. The measurements were performed on four underdoped single crystals with oxygen contents corresponding to Tc's varying from 42.8 to 63.6 K. The anisotropy was found to be strongly temperature dependent, while only a weak dependence on the magnetic field was observed. No evidence for a field dependent superfluid density was found. Possible origins of the temperature dependence of the anisotropy are discussed.

Femtosecond Quasiparticle and Phonon Dynamics in Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 Studied by Wideband Terahertz Spectroscopy

We measure the anisotropic mid-infrared response of electrons and phonons in bulk YBa2Cu3O7 after femtosecond photoexcitation. A line shape analysis of specific lattice modes reveals their transient occupation and coupling to the superconducting condensate. The apex oxygen vibration is strongly excited within 150 fs demonstrating that the lattice absorbs a major portion of the pump energy before the quasiparticles are thermalized. Our results attest to substantial electron-phonon scattering and introduce a powerful concept probing electron-lattice interactions in a variety of complex materials.

Multi-seeded melt growth (MSMG) of bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O using thin-film seeds

Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) and Sm-Ba-Cu-O (SmBCO) thin films have been used for the first time as heterogeneous seeds to multi-seed successfully the melt growth of bulk YBCO in a multi-seeded melt growth (MSMG) process. The use of thin film seeds, which may be prepared with highly controlled orientation (i.e. with a well-defined a-b plane and precisely known a-direction), is based on their superheating properties and reduces significantly contamination of the bulk sample by the seed material. A variety of grain boundaries were obtained by varying the angle between the seeds. Microstructural studies indicate that the extent of residual melt deposited at the grain boundary decreases with increasing grain boundary contact angle. It is established that the growth front proceeds continuously at the (110)/(110) grain boundary without trapping liquid, which leads to the formation of a clean grain boundary.
