Bogoliubov-Cherenkov Radiation in an Atom Laser

We develop a simple yet powerful technique to study Bogoliubov-Cherenkov radiation by producing a pulsed atom laser from a strongly confined Bose-Einstein condensate. Such radiation results when the atom laser pulse falls past a Bose-Einstein condensate at high-hypersonic speeds, modifying the spatial profile to display a characteristic twin jet structure and a complicated interference pattern. The experimental observations are in excellent agreement with mean-field numerical simulations and an analytic theory. Due to the highly hypersonic regime reached in our experiment, this system offers a highly controllable platform for future studies of condensed-matter analogs of quantum electrodynamics at ultrarelativistic speeds.

Exact results for polaron and molecule in one-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas

Using exact Bethe ansatz (BA) solutions, we show that a spin-down fermion immersed into a fully polarized spin-up Fermi sea with a weak attraction is dressed by the surrounding spin-up fermions to form the one-dimensional analog of a polaron. As the attraction becomes strong, the spin-down fermion binds with one spin-up fermion to form a tightly bound molecule. Throughout the whole interaction regime, a crossover from the polaron to a molecule state is fully demonstrated through exact results of the excitation spectrum, the effective mass, binding energy and kinetic energy. Furthermore, a clear distinction between the polaron and molecule is conceived by the probability distribution, single particle reduced density matrix and density-density correlations, which are calculated directly from the Bethe ansatz wave function. Such a polaron-molecule crossover presents a universal nature of an impurity immersed into a fermionic medium with an attraction in one dimension.

Wilson ratio of Fermi gases in one dimension

We calculate the Wilson ratio of the one-dimensional Fermi gas with spin imbalance. The Wilson ratio of attractively interacting fermions is solely determined by the density stiffness and sound velocity of pairs and of excess fermions for the two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase. The ratio exhibits anomalous enhancement at the two critical points due to the sudden change in the density of states. Despite a breakdown of the quasiparticle description in one dimension, two important features of the Fermi liquid are retained, namely the specific heat is linearly proportional to temperature whereas the susceptibility is independent of temperature. In contrast to the phenomenological TLL parameter, the Wilson ratio provides a powerful parameter for testing universal quantum liquids of interacting fermions in one, two and three dimensions.

Quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons in a 1D harmonic trap

We investigate universal thermodynamics and quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. From the equation of state, we find that a partially-polarized core is surrounded by two wings composed of either spin-singlet pairs or a fully spin-aligned Tonks-Girardeau gas depending on the polarization. We describe how the scaling behaviour of density profiles can reveal the universal nature of quantum criticality and map out the quantum phase diagram. We further show that at quantum criticality the dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$. This reveals a subtle resemblance to the physics of the spin-1/2 attractive Fermi gas.

The asymptotic Bethe ansatz solution for one-dimensional SU(2) spinor bosons with finite range Gaussian interactions

We propose a one-dimensional model of spinor bosons with SU(2) symmetry and a two-body finite range Gaussian interaction potential. We show that the model is exactly solvable when the width of the interaction potential is much smaller compared to the inter-particle separation. This model is then solved via the asymptotic Bethe ansatz technique. The ferromagnetic ground state energy and chemical potential are derived analytically. We also investigate the effects of a finite range potential on the density profiles through local density approximation. Finite range potentials are more likely to lead to quasi Bose-Einstein condensation than zero range potentials.

Thermodynamics, spin-charge separation and correlation functions of spin-1/2 fermions with repulsive interaction

We investigate the low temperature thermodynamics and correlation functions of one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions with strong repulsion in an external magnetic field via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. The exact thermodynamics of the model in a weak magnetic field is derived with the help of Wiener-Hopf techniques. It turns out that the low energy physics can be described by spin-charge separated conformal field theories of an effective Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and an antiferromagnetic SU(2) Heisenberg spin chain. However, these two types of conformally invariant low-lying excitations may break down as excitations take place far away from the Fermi points. The long distance asymptotics of the correlation functions and the critical exponents for the model in the presence of a magnetic field at zero temperature are derived in detail by solving dressed charge equations and by conformal mapping. Furthermore, we calculate the conformal dimensions for particular cases of correlation functions. The leading terms of these correlation functions are given explicitly for a weak magnetic field $H\ll 1$ and for a magnetic field close to the critical field $H\rightarrow H_{c}$. Our analytical results provide insights into universal thermodynamics and criticality in one-dimensional many-body physics.

Universality class of quantum criticality for strongly repulsive spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction

Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we study the quantum phase diagram, thermodynamics and criticality of one-dimensional spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. We analytically derive a high precision equation of state from which the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum critical behavior of the system are computed. We obtain explicit forms for the scaling functions near the critical points yielding the dynamical exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$ for the quantum phase transitions driven by either the chemical potential or the magnetic field. Consequently, we further demonstrate that quantum criticality of the system can be mapped out from the finite temperature density and magnetization profiles of the 1D trapped gas. Our results provide the physical origin of quantum criticality in a 1D many-body system beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description.

Asymptotic correlation functions and FFLO signature for the one-dimensional attractive spin-1/2 Fermi gas

We investigate the long distance asymptotics of various correlation functions for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with attractive interactions using the dressed charge formalism. In the spin polarized phase, these correlation functions exhibit spatial oscillations with a power-law decay whereby their critical exponents are found through conformal field theory. We show that spatial oscillations of the leading terms in the pair correlation function and the spin correlation function solely depend on $Δk_F$ and $2Δk_F$, respectively. Here $Δk_F=π(n_{\uparrow}-n_{\downarrow})$ denotes the mismatch between the Fermi surfaces of spin-up and spin-down fermions. Such spatial modulations are characteristics of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Our key observation is that backscattering among the Fermi points of bound pairs and unpaired fermions results in a one-dimensional analog of the FFLO state and displays a microscopic origin of the FFLO nature. Furthermore, we show that the pair correlation function in momentum space has a peak at the point of mismatch between both Fermi surfaces $k=Δk_F$, which has recently been observed in numerous numerical studies.

Yang-Yang method for the thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component interacting fermions

Using Yang and Yang's particle-hole description, we present a thorough derivation of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for a general $SU(κ)$ fermionic system in one-dimension for both the repulsive and attractive regimes under the presence of an external magnetic field. These equations are derived from Sutherland's Bethe ansatz equations by using the spin-string hypothesis. The Bethe ansatz root patterns for the attractive case are discussed in detail. The relationship between the various phases of the magnetic phase diagrams and the external magnetic fields is given for the attractive case. We also give a quantitative description of the ground state energies for both strongly repulsive and strongly attractive regimes.

Universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases in one-dimensional strongly attractive SU(N) fermionic cold atoms

A simple set of algebraic equations is derived for the exact low-temperature thermodynamics of one-dimensional multi-component strongly attractive fermionic atoms with enlarged SU(N) spin symmetry and Zeeman splitting. Universal multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phases are thus determined. For linear Zeeman splitting, the physics of the gapless phase at low temperatures belongs to the universality class of a two-component asymmetric TLL corresponding to spin-neutral N-atom composites and spin-(N-1)/2 single atoms. The equation of states is also obtained to open up the study of multi-component TLL phases in 1D systems of N-component Fermi gases with population imbalance.

Evidence for the super Tonks-Girardeau gas

We provide evidence in support of a recent proposal by Astrakharchik at al. for the existence of a super Tonks-Girardeau gas-like state in the attractive interaction regime of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases. We show that the super Tonks-Giradeau gas-like state corresponds to a highly-excited Bethe state in the integrable interacting Bose gas for which the bosons acquire hard-core behaviour. The gas-like state properties vary smoothly throughout a wide range from strong repulsion to strong attraction. There is an additional stable gas-like phase in this regime in which the bosons form two-body bound states behaving like hard-core bosons.
