Photo-transmutation of long-lived radionuclide Cs-135 by laser-plasma driven electron source

Relativistic electrons, accelerated by the laser ponderomotive force, can be focused onto a high-Z convertor to generate high-brightness beams of gamma-rays, which in turn can be used to induce photonuclear reactions. In this work, the possibility of photo-transmutation of long-lived radionuclide Cs-135 by laser-plasma driven electron source has been demonstrated through Geant4 simulations. High energy electron generation, bremsstrahlung and photonuclear reaction have been observed at four different laser intensities of 10^{20} W/cm^2, 5 times 10^{20} W/cm^2, 10^{21} W/cm^2 and 5 times 10^{21} W/cm^2, respectively. It was shown that the laser intensity and the target geometry have strong effect on the transmutation reaction yield. At different laser intensities the recommended target sizes were found to obtain the maximum reaction yield. The remarkable feature of this work is to evaluate the optimal laser intensity to produce maximum reaction yield of 10^8 per Joule in laser pulse energy, which is 10^{21} W/cm^2. Our study suggests photo-transmutation driven by laser-based electron source as a promising approach for experimental research into transmutation reactions, with potential applications to nuclear waste management.

Study of Temporal Evolution of Emission Spectrum in a Steeply Rising Submillimeter Burst

In the paper the spectral temporal evolution of a steeply rising submillimeter (THz) burst occurred on 2003 November 2 was investigated in detail for the first time. Observations show that the flux density of the THz spectrum increased steeply with frequency above 200 GHz. Their average rising rates reached a value of 235 sfu/GHz (corresponding spectral index $α$ of 4.8) during the burst. The flux densities reached about 4,000 and 70,000 sfu at 212 and 405 GHz at maximum phase, respectively. The emissions at 405 GHz maintained continuous high level that they exceed largely the peak values of the microwave (MW) spectra during the main phase. Our studies suggest that only energetic electrons with a low-energy cutoff of $\sim$1 MeV and number density of $\sim$$10^{6}$--$10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$ can produce such strong and steeply rising THz component via gyrosynchrotron (GS) radiation based on numerical simulations of burst spectra in the nonuniform magnetic field case. The electron number density $N$, derived from our numerical fits to the THz temporal evolution spectra, increased substantially from $8\times10^{6}$ to $4\times10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$, i.e., $N$ value increased 50 times during the rise phase. During the decay phase it decreased to $7\times10^{7}$ cm$^{-3}$, i.e., decreased about five times from the maximum phase. The total electron number decreased an order of magnitude from the maximum phase to the decay phase. Nevertheless the variation amplitude of $N$ is only about one time in the MW emission source during this burst, and the total electron number did not decrease but increased by about 20$\%$ during the decay phase. Interestingly, we find that the THz source radius decreased by about 24$\%$ while the MW source one, on the contrary, increased by 28$\%$ during the decay phase.

Proton radiography of magnetic field produced by ultra-intense laser irradiating capacity-coil target

Ultra-intense ultra-short laser is firstly used to irradiate the capacity-coil target to generate magnetic field. The spatial structure and temporal evolution of huge magnetic fields were studied with time-gated proton radiography method. A magnetic flux density of 40T was measured by comparing the proton deflection and particle track simulations. Although the laser pulse duration is only 30fs, the generated magnetic field can last for over 100 picoseconds. The energy conversion efficiency from laser to magnetic field can reach as high as ~20%. The results indicate that tens of tesla (T) magnetic field could be produced in many ultra intense laser facilities around the world, and higher magnetic field could be produced by picosecond lasers.

Effects of the sintering atmosphere on the superconductivity of SmFeAsO1-xFx compounds

A series of SmFeAsO1-xFx samples were sintered in quartz tubes filled with air of different pressures. The effects of the sintering atmosphere on the superconductivity were systematically investigated. The SmFeAsO1-xFx system maintains a transition temperature (Tc) near 50 K until the concentration of oxygen in quartz tubes increases to a certain threshold, after which Tc decreases dramatically. Fluorine losses, whether due to vaporization, reactions with starting materials, and reactions with oxygen, proved to be detrimental to the superconductivity of this material. The deleterious effects of the oxygen in the sintering atmosphere were also discussed in detail.

Comparative study of transport and magnetic Jc in the polycrystalline iron-based superconductor NdFeAsO{0.88}F{0.12}

Polycrystalline NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductors prepared by high pressure (HP) and ambient pressure (AP) method were comparatively studied by magnetization and transport measurements. Upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr) and the anisotropy parameter were estimated from resistance transition curves. The broadening of transition width was observed, and ascribed to both Hc2 anisotropy and superconductivity inhomogeneity of samples. Magnetic hysteresis loops (MHLs) in low fields were measured to detect the trace of weak-link behavior. The reclosed hysteresis loops in low fields manifest that there are weak-links in both samples. Magnetization critical current density Jcm were derived from MHLs. High-pressure synthesized sample shows higher Jcm. However, by means of direct transport I-V measurements, transport critical current density Jct was very low. The Jct values for two samples are comparable. Large discrepancies between Jcm and Jct also indicate that there are weak-links in both samples. The relative mechanism is discussed in detail.

Influence of magnetism on the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductor NdFeAsO0.88F0.12

Both DC and AC magnetization measurements were performed on the NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductor to investigate the influence of magnetism on the superconducting properties of this system. The crossover of the ZFC and FC magnetic susceptibility curves under 7.5KOe was observed. The imaginary component of the first harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility, increases with the increasing DC field below 10K and shows frequency dependency under 7.5KOe at low temperature. The paramagnetism of Nd3+ ions tilts the magnetic hysteresis loops and broadens the hysteresis width. After correction for the paramagnetism, the field and temperature dependence of intrinsic Jcm was obtained and compared with the experimentally obtained total Jcm. The origin of the abnormal behavior of magnetization was investigated and attributed to a magnetic background, which was speculated to be caused by the spin-glass state. However, this magnetic background does not affect the flux pinning properties in this sample. The related mechanism was discussed.
