Krylov complexity and orthogonal polynomials

Krylov complexity measures operator growth with respect to a basis, which is adapted to the Heisenberg time evolution. The construction of that basis relies on the Lanczos algorithm, also known as the recursion method. The mathematics of Krylov complexity can be described in terms of orthogonal polynomials. We provide a pedagogical introduction to the subject and work out analytically a number of examples involving the classical orthogonal polynomials, polynomials of the Hahn class, and the Tricomi-Carlitz polynomials.

Reparameterization Dependence and Holographic Complexity of Black Holes

We refine the calculation of holographic complexity of black holes in the complexity equals action approach by applying the recently introduced criterion that the action of any causal diamond in static vacuum regions must vanish identically. This criterion fixes empty anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime as the reference state with vanishing complexity and renders holographic complexity explicitly finite in all the cases we consider. The cases considered here include the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, the rotating BTZ black hole, the Kerr-AdS black hole, and AdS-Vaidya spacetime. The criterion is equivalent to imposing that the corner contributions vanish. Contrary to earlier results, we find that the generalized Lloyd bound always holds in the Reissner-Nordström-AdS and BTZ cases.

Spectra of Certain Holographic ABJM Wilson Loops in Higher Rank Representations

The holographic configurations dual to Wilson loops in higher rank representations in the ABJM theory are described by branes with electric flux along their world volumes. In particular, D2 and D6 branes with electric flux play a central role as potential dual to totally symmetric and totally antisymmetric representations, respectively. We compute the spectra of excitations of these brane configurations in both, the bosonic and fermionic sectors. We highlight a number of aspects that distinguish these configurations from their D3 and D5 cousins including new peculiar mixing terms in the fluctuations. We neatly organize the spectrum of fluctuations into the corresponding supermultiplets.

Photons in a Ball

The electromagnetic field inside a spherical cavity of large radius R is considered in the presence of stationary charge and current densities. R provides infra-red regularization while maintaining gauge invariance. The quantum ground state of physical photons forming the magnetic field is found to be a coherent state with a definite mean occupation number. The electric field, which is determined by the Gauss law constraint, is maintained by a minimum uncertainty coherent state, according to the projection operator approach to the quantization of constrained systems. The mean occupation number of this state is proportional to the square of the total charge. The results confirm formulae obtained previously from a calculation with a finite photon mass for infra-red regularization.

Quantum Portrait of a Black Hole with Pöschl-Teller Potential

We improve upon the simple model studied by Casadio and Orlandi [JHEP 1308 (2013) 025] for a black hole as a condensate of gravitons. Instead of the harmonic oscillator potential, the Pöschl-Teller potential is used, which allows for a continuum of scattering states. The quantum mechanical model is embedded into a relativistic wave equation for a complex Klein-Gordon field, and the charge of the field is interpreted as the gravitational charge (mass) carried by the graviton condensate.

On the number of soft quanta in classical field configurations

A crucial ingredient in the large-N quantum portrait of black holes proposed by Dvali and Gomez is the estimate of the number of soft quanta that make up the classical gravitational field. It is argued here that the coherent state formalism provides a way to calculate that number directly. As a consequence, the average energy of the soft quanta is such that the typical geometric size of the field source can be roughly interpreted as their de Broglie wavelength. The calculation is done for the electromagnetic field and for Newtonian gravity, and it is argued that the number of soft quanta should be unchanged in General Relativity due to the long range nature of gravity.

Perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of pure N=1 super Yang-Mills theory from wrapped branes

The Maldacena-Nunez solution is generalized to include a number of integration constants, one of which controls the resolution of the singularity of the wrapped D5-brane background. Some features of the dual pure N=1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory are calculated, amongst which the gluino condensate, the beta function of the gauge coupling and a brane probe potential, which is related to the Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective potential. Each integration constant has a precise meaning in the dual SYM theory, e.g., the amount of non-perturbative SYM physics captured by the gravity configuration is described by the singularity resolution parameter.
