Exploring the high dimensional geometry of HSI features

We explore feature space geometries induced by the 3-D Fourier scattering transform and deep neural network with extended attribute profiles on four standard hyperspectral images. We examine the distances and angles of class means, the variability of classes, and their low-dimensional structures. These statistics are compared to that of raw features, and our results provide insight into the vastly different properties of these two methods. We also explore a connection with the newly observed deep learning phenomenon of neural collapse.

Maximal function pooling with applications

Inspired by the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, we propose a novel pooling strategy which is called maxfun pooling. It is presented both as a viable alternative to some of the most popular pooling functions, such as max pooling and average pooling, and as a way of interpolating between these two algorithms. We demonstrate the features of maxfun pooling with two applications: first in the context of convolutional sparse coding, and then for image classification.

Discrete Directional Gabor Frames

We develop a theory of discrete directional Gabor frames for functions defined on the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. Our construction incorporates the concept of ridge functions into the theory of isotropic Gabor systems, in order to develop an anisotropic Gabor system with strong directional sensitivity. We present sufficient conditions on a window function $g$ and a sampling set $Λ$ for the corresponding directional Gabor system $\{g_{m,t,u}\}_{(m,t,u)\inΛ}$ to form a discrete frame. Explicit estimates on the frame bounds are developed. A numerical implementation of our scheme is also presented, and is shown to perform competitively in compression and denoising against state-of-the-art anisotropic methods.

Kaczmarz Algorithm and Frames

Sequences of unit vectors for which the Kaczmarz algorithm always converges in Hilbert space can be characterized in frame theory by tight frames with constant 1. We generalize this result to the context of frames and bases. In particular, we show that the only effective sequences which are Riesz bases are orthonormal bases. Moreover, we consider the infinite system of linear algebraic equations $A x = b$ and characterize the (bounded) matrices $A$ for which the Kaczmarz algorithm always converges to a solution.

Momentum of cosmological acoustic field

The acoustic spacetime corresponding to perturbed Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe inherit the space isometries from the original FLRW model, but essentially differs in dynamics. The scale factor manifestly depends on the equation of state of the matter content. Despite the higher complexity of the background evolution the perturbation equation in this space is substantially simpler: the density perturbations obey d'Alembert equation. Canonical formalism reconstructed in the acoustic spacetime enables one to employ the Klein-Gordon scalar product. Consequently, the Fourier decomposition of the perturbation field provide the time-independent Fourier coefficients and the time-independent spectrum. The perturbation spectrum does not depend of the choice of the Cauchy hypersurface from which the data are collected. Noether constants associated with the six-parameter isometry group define the components of the momentum, hyperbolic momentum and angular momentum of sound.

The Balian--Low theorem for the symplectic form on ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$

In this paper we extend the Balian--Low theorem, which is a version of the uncertainty principle for Gabor (Weyl--Heisenberg) systems, to functions of several variables. In particular, we first prove the Balian--Low theorem for arbitrary quadratic forms. Then we generalize further and prove the Balian--Low theorem for differential operators associated with a symplectic basis for the symplectic form on ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$.
