The Multi-faceted Inverted Harmonic Oscillator: Chaos and Complexity

The harmonic oscillator is the paragon of physical models; conceptually and computationally simple, yet rich enough to teach us about physics on scales that span classical mechanics to quantum field theory. This multifaceted nature extends also to its inverted counterpart, in which the oscillator frequency is analytically continued to pure imaginary values. In this article we probe the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with recently developed quantum chaos diagnostics such as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) and the circuit complexity. In particular, we study the OTOC for the displacement operator of the IHO with and without a non-Gaussian cubic perturbation to explore genuine and quasi scrambling respectively. In addition, we compute the full quantum Lyapunov spectrum for the inverted oscillator, finding a paired structure among the Lyapunov exponents. We also use the Heisenberg group to compute the complexity for the time evolved displacement operator, which displays chaotic behaviour. Finally, we extended our analysis to N-inverted harmonic oscillators to study the behaviour of complexity at the different timescales encoded in dissipation, scrambling and asymptotic regimes.

Towards the Web of Quantum Chaos Diagnostics

We study the connections between three quantities that can be used as diagnostics for quantum chaos, i.e., the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), Loschmidt echo (LE), and complexity. We generalize the connection between OTOC and LE for infinite dimensions and extend it for higher-order OTOCs and multi-fold LEs. Novel applications of this intrinsic relation are proposed. We also propose a relationship between a specific circuit complexity and LE by using the inverted oscillator model. These relationships signal a deeper connection between these three probes of quantum chaos.

Quantum Chaos on Complexity Geometry

This article tackles a fundamental long-standing problem in quantum chaos, namely, whether quantum chaotic systems can exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions, in a form that directly generalizes the notion of classical chaos in phase space. We develop a linear response theory for complexity, and demonstrate that the complexity can exhibit exponential sensitivity in response to perturbations of initial conditions for chaotic systems. Two immediate significant results follows: i) the complexity linear response matrix gives rise to a spectrum that fully recovers the Lyapunov exponents in the classical limit, and ii) the linear response of complexity is given by the out-of-time order correlators.

Optimal uncertainty relations in a modified Heisenberg algebra

Various theories that aim at unifying gravity with quantum mechanics suggest modifications of the Heisenberg algebra for position and momentum. From the perspective of quantum mechanics, such modifications lead to new uncertainty relations which are thought (but not proven) to imply the existence of a minimal observable length. Here we prove this statement in a framework of sufficient physical and structural assumptions. Moreover, we present a general method that allows to formulate optimal and state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations. In addition, instead of variances, we make use of entropies as a measure of uncertainty and provide uncertainty relations in terms of min- and Shannon entropies. We compute the corresponding entropic minimal lengths and find that the minimal length in terms of min-entropy is exactly one bit.

Generalized dilatation operator method for non-relativistic holography

We present a general algorithm for constructing the holographic dictionary for Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds for any value of the dynamical exponent $z$ and any value of the hyperscaling violation parameter $θ$ compatible with the null energy condition. The objective of the algorithm is the construction of the general asymptotic solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation subject to the desired boundary conditions, from which the full dictionary can be subsequently derived. Contrary to the relativistic case, we find that a fully covariant construction of the asymptotic solution for running non-relativistic theories necessitates an expansion in the eigenfunctions of two commuting operators instead of one. This provides a covariant but non-relativistic grading of the expansion, according to the number of time derivatives.

Is Imaginary Starobinsky Model Real?

We investigate the recently proposed possibility of chaotic inflation with respect to the imaginary part of the field T in a supersymmetric embedding of the Starobinsky model. We show that the stage of rapid expansion driven by Im T in this model ends almost instantly, and the subsequent stages of inflation are driven by the real part of the field T, as in the standard Starobinsky model. Thus, the Starobinsky model and its supersymmetric generalizations remain disfavored by the recent BICEP2 data.

Journeys Through Antigravity?

A possibility of journeys through antigravity has recently been proposed, with the suggestion that Weyl-invariant extension of scalars coupled to Einstein gravity allows for an unambiguous classical evolution through cosmological singularities in anisotropic spacetimes. We compute the Weyl invariant curvature squared and find that it blows up for the proposed anisotropic solution both at the Big Crunch as well as at the Big Bang. Therefore the cosmological singularities are not resolved by uplifting Einstein theory to a Weyl invariant model.

Lifshitz holography: The whole shebang

We provide a general algorithm for constructing the holographic dictionary for any asymptotically locally Lifshitz background, with or without hyperscaling violation, and for any values of the dynamical exponents $z$ and $θ$, as well as the vector hyperscaling violating exponent, that are compatible with the null energy condition. The analysis is carried out for a very general bottom up model of gravity coupled to a massive vector field and a dilaton with arbitrary scalar couplings. The solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained recursively in the form of a graded expansion in eigenfunctions of two commuting operators, which are the appropriate generalization of the dilatation operator for non scale invariant and Lorentz violating boundary conditions. The Fefferman-Graham expansions, the sources and 1-point functions of the dual operators, the Ward identities, as well as the local counterterms required for holographic renormalization all follow from this asymptotic solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We also find a family of exact backgrounds with $z>1$ and $θ>0$ corresponding to a marginal deformation shifting the vector hyperscaling violating parameter and we present an example where the conformal anomaly contains the only $z=2$ conformal invariant in $d=2$ with four spatial derivatives.

Born-Infeld with Higher Derivatives

We present new models of non-linear electromagnetism which satisfy the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino current conservation and are, therefore, self-dual. The new models differ from the Born-Infeld-type models in that they deform the Maxwell theory starting with terms like $λ(\partial F)^{4}$. We provide a recursive algorithm to find all higher order terms in the action of the form $λ^{n} \partial ^{4n} F^{2n+2} $, which are necessary for the U(1) duality current conservation. We use one of these models to find a self-dual completion of the $λ(\partial F)^{4}$ correction to the open string action. We discuss the implication of these findings for the issue of UV finiteness of ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.

From D3-Branes to Lifshitz Space-Times

We present a simple embedding of a z=2 Lifshitz space-time into type IIB supergravity. This is obtained by considering a stack of D3-branes in type IIB supergravity and deforming the world-volume by a plane wave. The plane wave is sourced by the type IIB axion. The superposition of the plane wave and the D3-branes is 1/4 BPS. The near horizon geometry of this configuration is a 5-dimensional z=0 Schroedinger space-time times a 5-sphere. This geometry is also 1/4 BPS. Upon compactification along the direction in which the wave is traveling the 5-dimensional z=0 Schroedinger space-time reduces to a 4-dimensional z=2 Lifshitz space-time. The compactification is such that the circle is small for weakly coupled type IIB string theory. This reduction breaks the supersymmetries. Further, we propose a general method to construct analytic z=2 Lifshitz black brane solutions. The method is based on deforming 5-dimensional AdS black strings by an axion wave and reducing to 4-dimensions. We illustrate this method with an example.

Holographic Renormalization for z=2 Lifshitz Space-Times from AdS

Lifshitz space-times with critical exponent z=2 can be obtained by dimensional reduction of Schroedinger space-times with critical exponent z=0. The latter space-times are asymptotically AdS solutions of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton system and can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity. This basic observation is used to perform holographic renormalization for 4-dimensional asymptotically z=2 locally Lifshitz space-times by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction of the corresponding problem of holographic renormalization for 5-dimensional asymptotically locally AdS space-times coupled to an axion-dilaton system. We can thus define and characterize a 4-dimensional asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-time in terms of 5-dimensional AdS boundary data. In this setup the 4-dimensional structure of the Fefferman-Graham expansion and the structure of the counterterm action, including the scale anomaly, will be discussed. We find that for asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-times obtained in this way there are two anomalies each with their own associated nonzero central charge. Both anomalies follow from the Scherk--Schwarz dimensional reduction of the 5-dimensional conformal anomaly of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton system. Together they make up an action that is of the Horava-Lifshitz type with nonzero potential term for z=2 conformal gravity.

Lifshitz-like solutions with hyperscaling violation in ungauged supergravity

In this note we describe several procedures to construct, from known black-hole and black-brane solutions of any ungauged supergravity theory, non-trivial gravitational solutions whose "near-horizon" and "near-singularity" limits are Lifshitz-like spacetimes with dynamical critical exponent z, "hyperscaling violation" exponent θand Lifshitz radius \ell that depends on the physical parameters of the original black-hole solution. Since the new Lifshitz-like solutions can be constructed from any black-hole solution of any ungauged supergravity, many of them can be easily embedded in String Theory. Some of the procedures produce supersymmetric Lifshitz-like solutions.

Effect of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle on Post-Inflation Preheating

We examine effects of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle, predicted by various theories of quantum gravity to replace the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle near the Planck scale, on post inflation preheating in cosmology, and show that it can predict either an increase or a decrease in parametric resonance and a corresponding change in particle production. Possible implications are considered.

Black holes as generalised Toda molecules

In this note we compare the geodesic formalism for spherically symmetric black hole solutions with the black hole effective potential approach. The geodesic formalism is beneficial for symmetric supergravity theories since the symmetries of the larger target space leads to a complete set of commuting constants of motion that establish the integrability of the geodesic equations of motion, as shown in arXiv:1007.3209. We point out that the integrability lifts straightforwardly to the integrability of the equations of motion with a black hole potential. This construction turns out to be a generalisation of the connection between Toda molecule equations and geodesic motion on symmetric spaces known in the mathematics literature. We describe in some detail how this generalisation of the Toda molecule equations arises.

The Integration Algorithm of Lax equation for both Generic Lax matrices and Generic Initial Conditions

Several physical applications of Lax equation require its general solution for generic Lax matrices and generic not necessarily diagonalizable initial conditions. In the present paper we complete the analysis started in [arXiv:0903.3771] on the integration of Lax equations with both generic Lax operators and generic initial conditions. We present a complete general integration formula holding true for any (diagonalizable or non diagonalizable) initial Lax matrix and give an original rigorous mathematical proof of its validity relying on no previously published results.
