Dilaton-Axion Inflation with PBHs and GWs

We discuss two-stage dilaton-axion inflation models [1] and describe $α$-attractor models with either exponential or polynomial approach to the plateau. We implement one of the models of primordial black hole production proposed in [2] in the $α$-attractor context, and develop its supergravity version. The predictions of this model following from its polynomial attractor properties are: $n_s$ and $r$ are $α$-independent, $r$ depends on the mass parameter $μ$ defining the approach to the plateau. The tachyonic instability at the transition point between the two stages of inflation is proportional to the negative curvature of the hyperbolic space $\mathcal{R}_K=-2/3α$. Therefore the masses of primordial black holes (PBHs) and the frequencies of small-scale gravitational waves (GWs) in this model show significant dependence on $α$.

Goldstino Condensation?

It was argued in \cite{DallAgata:2022abm} that the Volkov-Akulov (VA) model as well as similar models in supergravity and the related KKLT model in string theory, suffer from tachyonic instabilities due to goldstino condensation. The authors of \cite{DallAgata:2022abm} constructed a specific model with two unconstrained interacting chiral superfields with linearly realized supersymmetry which has an unstable vacuum. They claimed that this model becomes equivalent to the VA model in the UV limit. We show that the UV limit of their model is discontinuous, and the vacuum instability of the model proposed in \cite{DallAgata:2022abm} is not relevant to the VA model, to related models in supergravity, and to the KKLT construction.

Hybrid cosmological attractors

We construct $α$-attractor versions of hybrid inflation models. In these models, the potential of the inflaton field $φ$ is uplifted by the potential of the second field $χ$. This uplifting ends due to a tachyonic instability with respect to the field $χ$, which appears when $φ$ becomes smaller than some critical value $φ_{c}$. In the large $N$ limit, these models have the standard universal $α$-attractor predictions. In particular, $n_{s }= 1- {2 \over N}$ for the exponential attractors. However, in some special cases the large $N$ limit is reached only beyond the horizon, for $N \gtrsim 60$. This may change predictions for the cosmological observations. For any fixed $N$, in the limit of large uplift $V_{\rm up}$, or in the limit of large $φ_{c}$, we find another attractor prediction, $ n_s = 1$. By changing the parameters $V_{\rm up}$ and $φ_{c}$ one can continuously interpolate between the two attractor predictions $n_{s }= 1- {2 \over N}$ and $n_{s} = 1$. This provides significant flexibility, which can be very welcome in view of the rapidly growing amount and precision of the cosmological data. Our main result is not specific to the hybrid inflation models. Rather, it is generic to any inflationary models where the inflaton potential, for some reasons, is uplifted, and inflation ends prematurely.

Polynomial $α$-attractors

Inflationary $α$-attractor models can be naturally implemented in supergravity with hyperbolic geometry. They have stable predictions for observables, such as $n_s=1-{2/ N_e} $, assuming that the potential in terms of the original geometric variables, as well as its derivatives, are not singular at the boundary of the hyperbolic disk, or half-plane. In these models, the potential in the canonically normalized inflaton field $φ$ has a plateau, which is approached exponentially fast at large $φ$. We call them exponential $α$-attractors. We present a closely related class of models, where the potential is not singular, but its derivative is singular at the boundary. The resulting inflaton potential is also a plateau potential, but it approaches the plateau polynomially. We call them polynomial $α$-attractors. Predictions of these two families of attractors completely cover the sweet spot of the Planck/BICEP/Keck data. The exponential ones are on the left, the polynomial are on the right.

de Sitter Minima from M theory and String theory

We study M-theory compactification on ${\mathbb{T}^7/ \mathbb{Z}_2^3}$ in the presence of a seven-flux, metric fluxes and KK monopoles. The effective four-dimensional supergravity has seven chiral multiplets whose couplings are specified by the $G_2$-structure of the internal manifold. We supplement the corresponding superpotential by a KKLT type non-perturbative exponential contribution for all, or for some of the seven moduli, and find a discrete set of supersymmetric Minkowski minima. We also study type IIA and type IIB string theory compactified on ${\mathbb{T}^6/ \mathbb{Z}_2^2}$. In type IIA, we use a six-flux, geometric fluxes and non-perturbative exponents. In type IIB theory, we use F and H fluxes, and non-geometric Q and P fluxes, corresponding to consistently gauged supergravity with certain embedding tensor components, \emph{without non-perturbative exponents}. Also in these situations, we produce discrete Minkowski minima. Finally, to construct dS vacua starting from these Minkowski progenitors, we follow the procedure of mass production of dS vacua.

Mass Production of IIA and IIB dS Vacua

We describe several applications of the recently proposed mass production procedure, where multiple moduli are stabilized in a dS vacuum, in supergravity models inspired by string theory. The construction involves a small downshift of an initial supersymmetric Minkowski minimum to a supersymmetric AdS minimum, and a consequent small uplift to a dS minimum. Our type IIA examples include dS stabilization in a 7-moduli model with $[SL(2, \mathbb{R})]^7$ tree level symmetry, and its simplified version, a 3-moduli STU model. In these models, we use uplifting anti-D6 branes. In type IIB models, we present 2- and 3-moduli examples of stable dS vacua in CY three-folds, with an uplifting anti-D3 brane. These include K3 fibration models, a CICY model and a multi-hole Swiss cheese model. We also address the issue whether this procedure is limited to a very small parameter range or if large deviations from the progenitor Minkowski vacuum are possible.

preprint2020arXiv

Mass Production of Type IIA dS Vacua

A three-step procedure is proposed in type IIA string theory to stabilize multiple moduli in a dS vacuum. The first step is to construct a progenitor model with a localized stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum, or a discrete set of such vacua. It can be done, for example, using two non-perturbative exponents in the superpotential for each modulus, as in the KL model. A large set of supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with strongly stabilized moduli is protected by a theorem on stability of these vacua in absence of flat directions. The second step involves a parametrically small downshift to a supersymmetric AdS vacuum, which can be achieved by a small change of the superpotential. The third step is an uplift to a dS vacuum with a positive cosmological constant using the $\overline {D6}$-brane contribution. Stability of the resulting dS vacuum is inherited from the stability of the original supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum if the supersymmetry breaking in dS vacuum is parametrically small.

Construction of the de Sitter supergravity

Recently, the complete action for an N=1 pure supergravity action in 4 dimensions that allows a positive, negative or zero cosmological constant has been constructed. The action is the generalization of a Volkov-Akulov action for the Goldstino coupled to supergravity. The construction uses a nilpotent multiplet. This paper is written in honour of Philippe Spindel. AVP enjoyed collaborations and many interactions with Philippe, who has always appreciated very precise derivations. We use this occasion to give a very detailed account of the calculations that lead to the published results. We review aspects of supersymmetry with de Sitter backgrounds, the treatment of auxiliary fields, and other ingredients in the construction.

Cosmological Attractors and Asymptotic Freedom of the Inflaton Field

We show that the inflaton coupling to all other fields is exponentially suppressed during inflation in the cosmological $α$-attractor models. In the context of supergravity, this feature is a consequence of the underlying hyperbolic geometry of the moduli space which has a flat direction corresponding to the inflaton field. A combination of these factors protects the asymptotic flatness of the inflaton potential.

Cosmology with orthogonal nilpotent superfields

We study the application of a supersymmetric model with two constrained supermultiplets to inflationary cosmology. The first superfield S is a stabilizer chiral superfield satisfying a nilpotency condition of degree 2, S^2=0. The second superfield Phi is the inflaton chiral superfield, which can be combined into a real superfield B=(Phi-Phi*)/2i. The real superfield B is orthogonal to S, S B=0, and satisfies a nilpotency condition of degree 3, B^3=0. We show that these constraints remove from the spectrum the complex scalar sgoldstino, the real scalar inflaton partner (i.e. the "sinflaton"), and the fermionic inflatino. The corresponding supergravity model with de Sitter vacua describes a graviton, a massive gravitino, and one real scalar inflaton, with both the goldstino and inflatino being absent in unitary gauge. We also discuss relaxed superfield constraints where S^2=0 and S Phi* is chiral, which removes the sgoldstino and inflatino, but leaves the sinflaton in the spectrum. The cosmological model building in both of these inflatino-less models offers some advantages over existing constructions.

Coupling the Inflationary Sector to Matter

We describe the coupling of matter fields to an inflationary sector of supergravity, the inflaton $Φ$ and a stabilizer $S$, in models where the Kahler potential has a flat inflaton direction. Such models include, in particular, advanced versions of the hyperbolic $α$-attractor models with a flat inflaton direction Kahler potential, providing a good fit to the observational data. If the superpotential is at least quadratic in the matter fields $U^{i}$, with restricted couplings to the inflaton sector, we prove that under certain conditions: i) The presence of the matter fields does not affect a successful inflationary evolution. ii) There are no tachyons in the matter sector during and after inflation. iii) The matter masses squared are higher than $3H^2$ during inflation. The simplest class of theories satisfying all required conditions is provided by models with a flat direction Kahler potential, and with the inflaton $Φ$ and a stabilizer $S$ belonging to a hidden sector, so that matter fields have no direct coupling to the inflationary sector in the Kahler potential and in the superpotential.

Linear Versus Non-linear Supersymmetry, in General

We study superconformal and supergravity models with constrained superfields. The underlying version of such models with all unconstrained superfields and linearly realized supersymmetry is presented here, in addition to the physical multiplets there are Lagrange multiplier (LM) superfields. Once the equations of motion for the LM superfields are solved, some of the physical superfields become constrained. The linear supersymmetry of the original models becomes non-linearly realized, its exact form can be deduced from the original linear supersymmetry. Known examples of constrained superfields are shown to require the following LM's: chiral superfields, linear superfields, general complex superfields, some of them are multiplets with a spin.

Orthogonal Nilpotent Superfields from Linear Models

We derive supersymmetry/supergravity models with constrained orthogonal nilpotent superfields from the linear models in the formal limit where the masses of the sgoldstino, inflatino and sinflaton tend to infinity. The case where the sinflaton mass remains finite leads to a model with a `relaxed' constraint, where the sinflaton remains an independent field. Our procedure is equivalent to a requirement that some of the components of the curvature of the moduli space tend to infinity.

Pure de Sitter Supergravity

Using superconformal methods we derive an explicit de Sitter supergravity action invariant under spontaneously broken local ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. The supergravity multiplet interacts with a nilpotent goldstino multiplet. We present a complete locally supersymmetric action including the graviton and the fermionic fields, gravitino and goldstino, no scalars. In the global limit when supergravity multiplet decouples, our action reproduces the Volkov-Akulov theory. In the unitary gauge where goldstino vanishes we recover pure supergravity with the positive cosmological constant. The classical equations of motion, with all fermions vanishing, have a maximally symmetric solution: de Sitter space.

Seven-Disk Manifold, alpha-attractors and B-modes

Cosmological alpha-attractor models in \cN=1 supergravity are based on hyperbolic geometry of a Poincaré disk with the radius square {\cal R}^2=3α. The predictions for the B-modes, r\approx 3α{4\over N^2}, depend on moduli space geometry and are robust for a rather general class of potentials. Here we notice that starting with M-theory compactified on a 7-manifold with G_2 holonomy, with a special choice of Betti numbers, one can obtain d=4 \cN=1 supergravity with rank 7 scalar coset \Big[{SL(2)\over SO(2)}\Big]^7. In a model where these 7 unit size Poincaré disks have identified moduli one finds that 3 alpha =7. Assuming that the moduli space geometry of the phenomenological models is inherited from this version of M-theory, one would predict r \approx 10^{-2} for 53 e-foldings. We also describe the related maximal supergravity and M/string theory models leading to preferred values 3 alpha =1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

String Theory Origin of Constrained Multiplets

We study the non-linearly realized spontaneously broken supersymmetry of the (anti-)D3-brane action in type IIB string theory. The worldvolume fields are one vector $A_μ$, three complex scalars $ϕ^i$ and four 4d fermions $λ^0$, $λ^i$. These transform, in addition to the more familiar N=4 linear supersymmetry, also under 16 spontaneously broken, non-linearly realized supersymmetries. We argue that the worldvolume fields can be packaged into the following constrained 4d non-linear N=1 multiplets: four chiral multiplets $S$, $Y^i$ that satisfy $S^2=SY^i=0$ and contain the worldvolume fermions $λ^0$ and $λ^i$; and four chiral multiplets $W_α$, $H^i$ that satisfy $S W_α=0$ and $S \bar D_{\dot α} \bar H^{\bar \imath}=0$ and contain the vector $A_μ$ and the scalars $ϕ^i$. We also discuss how placing an anti-D3-brane on top of intersecting O7-planes can lead to an orthogonal multiplet $Φ$ that satisfies $S(Φ-\bar Φ)=0$, which is particularly interesting for inflationary cosmology.

$\overline{\rm D3}$ and dS

The role of the $\overline{\rm D3}$ brane in providing de Sitter vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry in the KKLT construction is clarified. The first step in this direction was explained in arXiv:hep-th/0301240, arXiv:hep-th/0308055: it was shown there that in the GKP background the bosonic contributions to the vacuum energy from the DBI and WZ term cancel for a D3 brane, but double for a $\overline{\rm D3}$ brane, leading to de Sitter vacua. The next step was taken in arXiv:1411.1121 where the analogous mechanism of the doubling (cancelation) of the $\overline{\rm D3}$ (D3) DBI and WZ terms was discovered in the presence of Volkov-Akulov fermions living on the brane, in a flat supergravity background. Here we confirm this mechanism of doubling/cancelation for the $\overline{\rm D3}$/D3 brane in the GKP supergravity background preserving $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ supersymmetry. We find that imaginary self-dual $G_{(3)}$ flux of type $(2,1)$ nicely removes the $SU(3)$ fermion triplet by giving it a large mass, while leaving the Volkov-Akulov goldstino, which is the $SU(3)$ singlet, massless. This makes the de Sitter landscape in D-brane physics clearly related to de Sitter vacua in effective $d=4$ supergravity with a nilpotent multiplet and spontaneously broken supersymmetry.

$α$-Attractors: Planck, LHC and Dark Energy

We develop four-parameter supergravity models of inflation and dark energy, constrained so that ${δρ\over ρ}$, $n_s$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ take their known observable values, but where the mass of gravitino $m_{3/2}$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ are free parameters. We focus on generalized cosmological $α$-attractor models, with logarithmic Kahler potentials, a nilpotent goldstino and spontaneously broken supersymmetry at the de Sitter minimum. The future data on B-modes will specify the parameter $α$, measuring the geometry of the Kahler, manifold. The string landscape idea for dark energy is supported in these models via an incomplete cancellation of the universal positive goldstino and negative gravitino contribution. The scale of SUSY breaking M related to the mass of gravitino in our models is a controllable parameter, independent on the scale of inflation, it will be constrained by LHC data and future collider Energy-frontier experiments.

Cosmological Attractors and Initial Conditions for Inflation

Inflationary $α$-attractor models in supergravity, which provide excellent fits to the latest observational data, are based on the Poincare disk hyperbolic geometry. We refine these models by constructing Kahler potentials with built-in inflaton shift symmetry and by making a canonical choice of the goldstino Kahler potential. The refined models are stable with respect to all scalar fields at all $α$, no additional stabilization terms are required. The scalar potential V has a nearly Minkowski minimum at small values of the inflaton field $φ$, and an infinitely long dS valley of constant depth and width at large $φ$. Because of the infinite length of this shift-symmetric valley, the initial value of the inflaton field at the Planck density is expected to be extremely large. We show that the inflaton field $φ$ does not change much until all fields lose their energy and fall to the bottom of the dS valley at large $φ$. This provides natural initial conditions for inflation driven by the inflaton field slowly rolling along the dS valley towards the minimum of the potential at small $φ$. A detailed description of this process is given for $α$-attractors in supergravity, but we believe that our general conclusions concerning naturalness of initial conditions for inflation are valid for a broad class of inflationary models with sufficiently flat potentials.

De Sitter Supergravity Model Building

We present the explicit de Sitter supergravity action describing the interaction of supergravity with an arbitrary number of chiral and vector multiplets as well as one nilpotent chiral multiplet. The action has a non-Gaussian dependence on the auxiliary field of the nilpotent multiplet, however, it can be integrated out for an arbitrary matter-coupled supergravity. The general supergravity action with a given Kahler potential $K$, superpotential $W$ and vector matrix $f_{AB}$ interacting with a nilpotent chiral multiplet consists of the standard supergravity action defined by $K$, $W$ and $f_{AB}$ where the scalar in the nilpotent multiplet has to be replaced by a bilinear combination of the fermion in the nilpotent multiplet divided by the Gaussian value of the auxiliary field. All additional contributions to the action start with terms quartic and higher order in the fermion of the nilpotent multiplet. These are given by a simple universal closed form expression.

Escher in the Sky

The cosmological models called $α$-attractors provide an excellent fit to the latest observational data. Their predictions $n_{s} = 1-2/N$ and $r = 12α/N^{2}$ are very robust with respect to the modifications of the inflaton potential. An intriguing interpretation of $α$-attractors is based on a geometric moduli space with a boundary: a Poincare disk model of a hyperbolic geometry with the radius $\sqrt{3α}$, beautifully represented by the Escher's picture Circle Limit IV. In such models, the amplitude of the gravitational waves is proportional to the square of the radius of the Poincare disk.

From Linear to Non-linear Supersymmetry via Functional Integration

We derive a complete pure de Sitter supergravity action with non-linearly realized supersymmetry and its rigid limit, the Volkov-Akulov action, from the corresponding models with linear supersymmetry, by computing the path integral in the limit of infinite sgoldstino mass. In this, we use a non-Gaussian functional integration formula that was recently discovered in a derivation of de Sitter supergravity from the superconformal theory. We also present explicit examples of pure dS supergravity and the case with one matter multiplet. These two simple examples serve as a test and a demo of the universal action formula valid for de Sitter supergravities with general matter coupling.

Inflatino-less Cosmology

We construct inflationary models in the context of supergravity with orthogonal nilpotent superfields [1]. When local supersymmetry is gauge-fixed in the unitary gauge, these models describe theories with only a single real scalar (the inflaton), a graviton and a gravitino. Critically, there is no inflatino, no sgoldstino, and no sinflaton in these models. This dramatically simplifies cosmological models which can simultaneously describe inflation, dark energy and SUSY breaking.

Inflation, de Sitter Landscape and Super-Higgs effect

We continue developing cosmological models involving nilpotent chiral superfields, which provide a simple unified description of inflation and the current acceleration of the universe in the supergravity context. We describe here a general class of models with a positive cosmological constant at the minimum of the potential, such that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in the direction of the nilpotent superfield $S$. In the unitary gauge, these models have a simple action where all highly non-linear fermionic terms of the classical Volkov-Akulov action disappear. We present masses for bosons and fermions in these theories. By a proper choice of parameters in this class of models, one can fit any possible set of the inflationary parameters $n_{s}$ and $r$, a broad range of values of the vacuum energy $V_{0}$, which plays the role of the dark energy, and achieve a controllable level of supersymmetry breaking. This can be done without introducing light moduli, such as Polonyi fields, which often lead to cosmological problems in phenomenological supergravity.

Matter-coupled de Sitter Supergravity

De Sitter supergravity describes interaction of supergravity with general chiral and vector multiplets as well as one nilpotent chiral multiplet. The extra universal positive term in the potential due to the nilpotent multiplet, corresponding to the anti-D3 brane in string theory, supports de Sitter vacua in these supergravity models. In the flat space limit these supergravity models include the Volkov-Akulov model with a non-linearly realized supersymmetry. The rules for constructing pure de Sitter supergravity action are generalized here in presence of other matter multiplets. We present a strategy to derive the complete closed form general supergravity action with a given Kahler potential $K$, superpotential $W$ and vector matrix $f_{AB}$ interacting with a nilpotent chiral multiplet. It has the potential $V=e^K(|F^2 |+ |DW|^2 - 3 |W|^2)$, where $F$ is a necessarily non-vanishing value of the auxiliary field of the nilpotent multiplet. De Sitter vacua are present under simple condition that $|F^2|- 3|W|^2>0$. A complete explicit action in the unitary gauge is presented.

String Theory Realizations of the Nilpotent Goldstino

We describe in detail how the spectrum of a single anti-D3-brane in four-dimensional orientifolded IIB string models reproduces precisely the field content of a nilpotent chiral superfield with the only physical component corresponding to the fermionic goldstino. In particular we explicitly consider a single anti-D3-brane on top of an O3-plane in warped throats, induced by $(2,1)$ fluxes. More general systems including several anti-branes and other orientifold planes are also discussed. This provides further evidence to the claim that non-linearly realized supersymmetry due to the presence of antibranes in string theory can be described by supersymmetric theories including nilpotent superfields. Implications to the KKLT and related scenarios of de Sitter moduli stabilization, to cosmology and to the structure of soft SUSY-breaking terms are briefly discussed.

The Hyperbolic Geometry of Cosmological Attractors

Cosmological alpha-attractors give a natural explanation for the spectral index n_s of inflation as measured by Planck while predicting a range for the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, consistent with all observations, to be measured more precisely in future detection of gravity waves. Their embedding into supergravity exploits the hyperbolic geometry of the Poincare disk or half-plane. These geometries are isometric under Mobius transformations, which include the shift symmetry of the inflaton field. We introduce a new Kahler potential frame that explicitly preserves this symmetry, enabling the inflaton to be light. Moreover, we include higher-order curvature deformations, which can stabilize a direction orthogonal to the inflationary trajectory. We illustrate this new framework by stabilizing the single superfield alpha-attractors.

The Unity of Cosmological Attractors

Recently, several broad classes of inflationary models have been discovered whose cosmological predictions are stable with respect to significant modifications of the inflaton potential. Some classes of models are based on a non-minimal coupling to gravity. These models, which we will call $ξ$-attractors, describe universal cosmological attractors (including Higgs inflation) and induced inflation models. Another class describes conformal attractors (including Starobinsky inflation and T-models) and their generalization to $α$-attractors. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the common denominator of these models: their attractor properties stem from a pole of order two in the kinetic term of the inflaton field in the Einstein frame formulation, prior to switching to the canonical variables. We point out that $α$- and universal attractors differ in the subleading corrections to the kinetic term. As a final step towards unification of $ξ$ and $α$ attractors, we introduce a special class of $ξ$-attractors which is fully equivalent to $α$-attractors with the identification $α= 1+{1\over 6ξ}$. There is no theoretical lower bound on $r$ in this class of models.

A universal attractor for inflation at strong coupling

We introduce a novel non-minimal coupling between gravity and the inflaton sector. Remarkably, for large values of this coupling all models asymptote to a universal attractor. This behavior is independent of the original scalar potential and generalizes the attractor in the phi^4 theory with non-minimal coupling to gravity. The attractor is located in the `sweet spot' of Planck's recent results.

An Update on Perturbative N=8 Supergravity

According to the recent pure spinor analysis of the UV divergences by Karlsson, there are no divergent 1PI structures beyond 6 loops in D=4 N=8 supergravity. In combination with the common expectation that the UV divergences do not appear at less than 7 loops, this may imply that the 4-point amplitude in D=4 N=8 supergravity is all-loop finite. This differs from the result of the previous studies of pure spinors, which suggested that there is a UV divergence at 7 loops in D=4. Therefore an independent investigation of the pure spinor formalism predictions is desirable, as well as continuation of explicit loop computations. In the meantime, we revisit here our earlier arguments on UV finiteness of N=8 supergravity based on the absence of the off-shell light-cone superspace counterterms, as well as on the E_{7(7)} current conservation. We believe that both arguments remain valid in view of the developments in this area during the last few years.

Analytic Classes of Metastable de Sitter Vacua

In this paper, we give a systematic procedure for building locally stable dS vacua in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity models motivated by string theory. We assume that one of the superfields has a Kahler potential of no-scale type and impose a hierarchy of supersymmetry breaking conditions. In the no-scale modulus direction the supersymmetry breaking is not small, in all other directions it is of order $ε$. We establish the existence of an abundance of vacua for large regions in the parameter space spanned by $ε$ and the cosmological constant. These regions exist regardless of the details of the other moduli, provided the superpotential can be tuned such that the off-diagonal blocks of the mass matrix are parametrically small. We test and support this general dS landscape construction by explicit analytic solutions for the STU model. The Minkowski limits of these dS vacua either break supersymmetry or have flat directions in agreement with a no-go theorem that we prove, stating that a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum without flat directions cannot be continuously deformed into a non-supersymmetric vacuum. We also describe a method for finding a broad class of stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacua that can be F-term uplifted to dS vacua and which have an easily controllable SUSY breaking scale.

Cosmological Attractor Models and Higher Curvature Supergravity

We study cosmological $α$-attractors in superconformal/supergravity models, where $α$ is related to the geometry of the moduli space. For $α=1$ attractors \cite{Kallosh:2013hoa} we present a generalization of the previously known manifestly superconformal higher curvature supergravity model \cite{Cecotti:1987sa}. The relevant standard 2-derivative supergravity with a minimum of two chiral multiplets is shown to be dual to a 4-derivative higher curvature supergravity, where in general one of the chiral superfields is traded for a curvature superfield. There is a degenerate case when both matter superfields become non-dynamical and there is only a chiral curvature superfield, pure higher derivative supergravity. Generic $α$-models \cite{Kallosh:2013yoa} interpolate between the attractor point at $α=0$ and generic chaotic inflation models at large $α$, in the limit when the inflaton moduli space becomes flat. They have higher derivative duals with the same number of matter fields as the original theory or less, but at least one matter multiplet remains. In the context of these models, the detection of primordial gravity waves will provide information on the curvature of the inflaton submanifold of the Kahler manifold, and we will learn if the inflaton is a fundamental matter multiplet, or can be replaced by a higher derivative curvature excitation.

Cosmology with Nilpotent Superfields

We discuss N=1 supergravity inflationary models based on two chiral multiplets, the inflaton and the goldstino superfield. Using superconformal methods for these models, we propose to replace the unconstrained chiral goldstino multiplet by the nilpotent one associated with non-linearly realized supersymmetry of the Volkov-Akulov type. In the new cosmological models, the sgoldstino is proportional to a bilinear combination of fermionic goldstinos. It does not acquire any vev, does nor require stabilization, and does not affect the cosmological evolution. We explain a universal relation of these new models to kappa-symmetric super-Dp-brane actions. This modification significantly simplifies a broad class of the presently existing inflationary models based on supergravity and string theory, including the simplest versions of chaotic inflation, the Starobinsky model, a broad class of cosmological attractors, the Higgs inflation, and much more. In particular, this is a step towards a fully supersymmetric version of the string theory axion monodromy inflation. The new construction serves as a simple and manifestly supersymmetric uplifting tool in the KKLT-type string theory landscape.

Emergence of Spontaneously Broken Supersymmetry on an Anti-D3-Brane in KKLT dS Vacua

The KKLT construction of de Sitter vacua includes an uplifting term coming from an anti-D3-brane. Here we show how this term can arise via spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, based on the emergence of a nilpotent chiral supermultiplet on the world-volume of the anti-D3-brane. We establish and use the fact that both the DBI as well as the WZ term, with account of orientifolding, acquire a form of the Volkov-Akulov action. For an O3 orientifold involution of $\mathbb{R}^{9,1}$ we demonstrate the cancellation between the fermionic parts of the DBI and WZ term for the D3-brane action. For the anti-D3-brane we show that the DBI action and the WZ action combine and lead to the emergence of the goldstino multiplet which is responsible for spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry. This provides a string theoretic explanation for the supersymmetric uplifting term in the KKLT effective supergravity model supplemented by a nilpotent chiral multiplet.

Hidden Superconformal Symmetry of the Cosmological Evolution

In the superconformal formulation of supergravity, the standard supergravity action appears as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking when the conformal compensator scalar field, the conformon, acquires a nonzero value, giving rise to the Planck mass. After that, many symmetries of the original theory become well hidden, and therefore they are often ignored. However, recent developments demonstrated that superconformal invariance is more than just a tool: it plays an important role in generalizing previously existing formulations of supergravity and developing new classes of inflationary models. In this paper we describe hidden superconformal symmetry of the cosmological evolution. In this formulation, inflation can be equivalently described as the conformon instability, and creation of the universe `from nothing' can be interpreted as spontaneous symmetry breaking due to emergence of a classical conformon field. We develop a general formalism that allows to describe the cosmological evolution simultaneously with the evolution of the conformon. We find a set of gauge invariant physical observables, including the superconformally invariant generalizations of the square of the Weyl tensor, which are necessary for invariant description of the cosmological singularities.

Inflation and Uplifting with Nilpotent Superfields

Recently it was found that a broad class of existing inflationary models based on supergravity can be significantly simplified if some of the standard, unconstrained chiral superfields are replaced by nilpotent superfields, associated with Volkov-Akulov supersymmetry. The same method allows to simplify the existing models of uplifting of AdS vacua in string theory. In this paper we will show that one can go well beyond simplifying the models that already exist. We will propose a broad class of new models of chaotic inflation based on supergravity with nilpotent superfields, which simultaneously incorporate both inflation and uplifting. They provide a simple unified description of inflation and the present acceleration of the universe in the supergravity context.

Is Imaginary Starobinsky Model Real?

We investigate the recently proposed possibility of chaotic inflation with respect to the imaginary part of the field T in a supersymmetric embedding of the Starobinsky model. We show that the stage of rapid expansion driven by Im T in this model ends almost instantly, and the subsequent stages of inflation are driven by the real part of the field T, as in the standard Starobinsky model. Thus, the Starobinsky model and its supersymmetric generalizations remain disfavored by the recent BICEP2 data.

Journeys Through Antigravity?

A possibility of journeys through antigravity has recently been proposed, with the suggestion that Weyl-invariant extension of scalars coupled to Einstein gravity allows for an unambiguous classical evolution through cosmological singularities in anisotropic spacetimes. We compute the Weyl invariant curvature squared and find that it blows up for the proposed anisotropic solution both at the Big Crunch as well as at the Big Bang. Therefore the cosmological singularities are not resolved by uplifting Einstein theory to a Weyl invariant model.

Large Field Inflation and Double $α$-Attractors

We consider a broad class of inflationary models that arise naturally in supergravity. They are defined in terms of a parameter $α$ that determines the curvature and cutoff of these models. As a function of this parameter, we exhibit that the inflationary predictions generically interpolate between two attractor points. At small cutoff $α$, the resulting inflationary model is of plateau-type with $n_s = 1 - 2 / N$ and $r = 12 α/ N^2$. For $α= 1$, these predictions coincide with predictions of the Starobinsky model and Higgs inflation. In contrast, for large cutoff $α$, the theory asymptotes to quadratic inflation, with $n_s = 1 - 2 / N$, $r = 8 / N$. Both universal predictions can be attributed to a stretching of the moduli space. For intermediate values of $α$, the predictions interpolate between these two critical points, thus covering the sweet spots of both Planck and BICEP2.

More on Universal Superconformal Attractors

We define a general class of superconformal inflationary attractor models studied in our previous papers [1,2], which include, among others, inflationary models of 'induced gravity' which were argued to retain perturbative unitarity up to the Planck scale [3]. The choice of the function $f(ϕ)$ in superconformal attractors for the models introduced in [3] is $f(ϕ)= ϕ^n - ξ^{-1}$. We present both superconformal and supergravity versions of these models, which were derived in [1,2] for arbitrary $f(ϕ)$, together with the universal conditions required for stabilization of the extra three moduli present in the superconformal attractors, in addition to the inflaton.

Natural Inflation in Supergravity and Beyond

Supergravity models of natural inflation and its generalizations are presented. These models are special examples of the class of supergravity models proposed in arXiv:1008.3375 and arXiv:1011.5945, which have a shift symmetric Kähler potential, superpotential linear in goldstino, and stable Minkowski vacua. We present a class of supergravity models with arbitrary potentials modulated by sinusoidal oscillations, similar to the potentials associated with axion monodromy models. We show that one can implement natural inflation in supergravity even in the models of a single axion field with axion parameters O(1). We also discuss the irrational axion landscape in supergravity, which describes a potential with infinite number of stable Minkowski and metastable dS minima.

Planck 2013 and Superconformal Symmetry

We explain why the concept of a spontaneously broken superconformal symmetry is useful to describe inflationary models favored by the Planck. Non-minimal coupling of complex scalars to curvature, N(X, X*) R, is compulsory for superconformal symmetry. Here N is the Kahler potential of the embedding moduli space, including the inflaton and the conformon. It appears that such a non-minimal coupling allows generic chaotic models of inflation to reach an agreement with the observable (n_{s},r) values. We describe here the superconformal versions of the cosmological attractors whose bosonic part was presented in lectures of A. Linde in this volume. A distinguishing feature of this class of models is that they tend to lead to very similar predictions which are not very sensitive with respect to strong modifications of the theory. The (super)conformal symmetry underlying (super)gravity allows a universal description of a large class of models which agree with observations and predict the tensor to scalar ratio 10^{-3} < r < 10^{-1}.

The double attractor behavior of induced inflation

We describe an induced inflation, which refers to a class of inflationary models with a generalized non-minimal coupling $ξg(ϕ) R$ and a specific scalar potential. The defining property of these models is that the scalar field takes a vev in the vacuum and thus induces an effective Planck mass. We study this model as a function of the coupling parameter $ξ$. At large $ξ$, the predictions of the theory are known to have an attractor behavior, converging to a universal result independent on the choice of the function $g(ϕ)$. We find that at small $ξ$, the theory approaches a second attractor. The inflationary predictions of this class of theories continuously interpolate between those of the Starobinsky model and the predictions of the simplest chaotic inflation with a quadratic potential.

Conjecture on Hidden Superconformal Symmetry of N=4 Supergravity

We argue that the observed UV finiteness of the 3-loop extended supergravities may be a manifestation of a hidden local superconformal symmetry of supergravity. We focus on the SU(2,2|4) dimensionless superconformal model. In Poincare gauge where the compensators are fixed to phi^2= 6 M_P^2 this model becomes a pure classical N=4 Einstein supergravity. We argue that in N=4 the higher-derivative superconformal invariants like phi^{-4}W^2 \bar W^2 and the consistent local anomaly delta (ln phi W^2) are not available. This conjecture on hidden local N=4 superconformal symmetry of Poincare supergravity may be supported by subsequent loop computations.

Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov and Deformation of Supersymmetry

We deform the action and the supersymmetry transformations of the d=10 and d=4 Maxwell supermultiplets so that at each order of the deformation the theory has 16 Maxwell multiplet deformed supersymmetries as well as 16 Volkov-Akulov type non-linear supersymmetries. The result agrees with the expansion in the string tension of the explicit action of the Dirac-Born-Infeld model and its supersymmetries, extracted from D9 and D3 superbranes, respectively. The half-maximal Dirac-Born-Infeld models with 8 Maxwell supermultiplet deformed supersymmetries and 8 Volkov-Akulov type supersymmetries are described by a new class of d=6 vector branes related to chiral (2,0) supergravity, which we denote as `Vp-branes'. We use a space-filling V5 superbrane for the d=6 model and a V3 superbrane for the d=4 half-maximal Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) models. In this way we present a completion to all orders of the deformation of the Maxwell supermultiplets with maximal 16+16 supersymmetries in d=10 and 4, and half-maximal 8+8 supersymmetries in d=6 and 4.

Hidden Supersymmetry May Imply Duality Invariance

We provide evidence that a particular hidden supersymmetry, when combined with half-maximal deformed global supersymmetry, implies that the theory is invariant under duality rotations of the vector and spinor fields. Based on a complete 8+8 supersymmetric model constructed recently, we argue that this hidden supersymmetry happens if and only if there is a Born-Infeld dependence on the Maxwell field strength and a Volkov-Akulov dependence on the Goldstino, up to local non-linear field redefinitions. We have tested our proposal for the N=2 superfield action with manifest N=2 supersymmetry and hidden N=2 supersymmetry at the level W^{10}, the highest level of deformation known for this model. We have established that it is N=2 self-dual, although the self-duality was not required in the original construction of this model. Highlighting the utility of considering duality-conserving sources of deformation, we can verify this invariance directly in an alternate construction of this very same action.

Higher Order Corrections in Minimal Supergravity Models of Inflation

We study higher order corrections in new minimal supergravity models of a single scalar field inflation. The gauging in these models leads to a massive vector multiplet and the D-term potential for the inflaton field with a coupling g^{2} ~ 10^{-10}. In the de-Higgsed phase with vanishing g^2, the chiral and vector multiplets are non-interacting, and the potential vanishes. We present generic manifestly supersymmetric higher order corrections for these models. In particular, for a supersymmetric gravity model -R+ R^2 we derive manifestly supersymmetric corrections corresponding to R^n. The dual version corresponds to a standard supergravity model with a single scalar and a massive vector. It includes, in addition, higher Maxwell curvature/scalar interaction terms of the Born-Infeld type and a modified D-term scalar field potential. We use the dual version of the model to argue that higher order corrections do not affect the last 60 e-foldings of inflation; for example the ξR^4 correction is irrelevant as long as ξ< 10^{24}.

Minimal Supergravity Models of Inflation

We present a superconformal master action for a class of supergravity models with one arbitrary function defining the Jordan frame. It leads to a gauge-invariant action for a real vector multiplet, which upon gauge fixing describes a massive vector multiplet, or to a dual formulation with a linear multiplet and a massive tensor field. In both cases the models have one real scalar, the inflaton, naturally suited for single-field inflation. Vectors and tensors required by supersymmetry to complement a single real scalar do not acquire vev's during inflation, so there is no need to stabilize the extra scalars which are always present in the theories with chiral matter multiplets. The new class of models can describe any inflaton potential which vanishes at its minimum and grows monotonically away from the minimum. In this class of supergravity models one can fit any desirable choice of inflationary parameters n_s and r.

Multi-field Conformal Cosmological Attractors

We describe a broad class of multi-field inflationary models with spontaneously broken conformal invariance. It generalizes the recently discovered class of cosmological attractors with a single inflaton field. In the new multi-field theories, just as in the previously studied single-field models, the moduli space has a boundary (Kahler cone) in terms of the original homogeneous conformal variables. Upon spontaneous breaking of the conformal invariance and switching to the Einstein frame, this boundary moves to infinity in terms of the canonically normalized inflaton field. This results in the exponential stretching and flattening of scalar potentials in the vicinity of the boundary of the moduli space, which makes even very steep potentials perfectly suitable for the slow-roll inflation. These theories, just like their single-field versions, typically lead to inflationary perturbations with n_s =1-2/N and r = 12/N^2, where N is the number of e-foldings.

Non-minimal Inflationary Attractors

Recently we identified a new class of (super)conformally invariant theories which allow inflation even if the scalar potential is very steep in terms of the original conformal variables. Observational predictions of a broad class of such theories are nearly model-independent. In this paper we consider generalized versions of these models where the inflaton has a non-minimal coupling to gravity with ξ<0 different from its conformal value ξ= -1/6. We show that these models exhibit attractor behavior. With even a slight increase of |ξ| from |ξ| = 0, predictions of these models for n_s and r rapidly converge to their universal model-independent values corresponding to conformal coupling ξ= -1/6. These values of n_s and r practically coincide with the corresponding values in the limit of infinitely large negative ξ.

Obstruction to E_{7(7)} Deformation in N=8 Supergravity

Candidate counterterms break Noether-Gaillard-Zumino E_{7(7)} current conservation in N=8 supergravity in four dimensions. Bossard and Nicolai proposed a scheme for deforming the subsector involving vector fields in a Lorentz covariant manner, so as to restore duality. They argued that there must exist an extension of this deformation to the full theory that preserves supersymmetry. We show that it is not possible to deform the maximal supergravity to restore E_{7(7)} duality, while maintaining both general covariance and N=8 supersymmetry, as was proposed. Deformation of N=8 supergravity requires higher spins and multiple gravitons, which presents a concrete obstacle to this proposal.

On the Supersymmetric Completion of $R+R^2$ Gravity and Cosmology

We revisit and clarify the supersymmetric versions of $R+ R^2$ gravity, in view of the renewed interest to these models in cosmology. We emphasize that the content of the dual standard supergravity theory in the old minimal formulation necessarily includes two massive chiral multiplets, that we call the inflaton and the goldstino. We point out that the presence of these multiplets is model independent in the old minimal formulation and therefore any theory that contains a single chiral multiplet fails to be a supersymmetric generalization of the $R+R^2$ gravity. The supergravity interactions of the two chiral multiplets are encoded in a superpotential mass term and an arbitrary Kahler potential for the goldstino multiplet. The implication for cosmology of the supersymmetric $R+R^2$ gravity is also discussed.

Superconformal Generalization of the Chaotic Inflation Model λϕ^4/4 - ξ/ 2 ϕ^2 R

A model of chaotic inflation based on the theory of a scalar field with potential λϕ^4 perfectly matches the observational data if one adds to it a tiny non-minimal coupling to gravity -ξ/2 ϕ^2 R with ξ> 0.002. We describe embedding of this model into the superconformal theory with spontaneous breaking of superconformal symmetry, and into supergravity. A model with small ξis technically natural: setting the small parameter ξto zero leads to a point of enhanced symmetry in the underlying superconformal theory.

Superconformal Inflationary $α$-Attractors

Recently a broad class of superconformal inflationary models was found leading to a universal observational prediction $n_s=1-2/N$ and $r=12/N^2$. Here we generalize this class of models by introducing a parameter $α$ inversely proportional to the curvature of the inflaton Kahler manifold. In the small curvature (large $α$) limit, the observational predictions of this class of models coincide with the predictions of generic chaotic inflation models. However, for sufficiently large curvature (small $α$), the predictions converge to the universal attractor regime with $n_s=1-2/N$ and $r=12α/N^2$, which corresponds to the part of the $n_s-r$ plane favored by the Planck data.

Universality Class in Conformal Inflation

We develop a new class of chaotic inflation models with spontaneously broken conformal invariance. Observational consequences of a broad class of such models are stable with respect to strong deformations of the scalar potential. This universality is a critical phenomenon near the point of enhanced symmetry, SO(1,1), in case of conformal inflation. It appears because of the exponential stretching of the moduli space and the resulting exponential flattening of scalar potentials upon switching from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame in this class of models. This result resembles stretching and flattening of inhomogeneities during inflationary expansion. It has a simple interpretation in terms of velocity versus rapidity near the Kahler cone in the moduli space, similar to the light cone of special theory of relativity. This effect makes inflation possible even in the models with very steep potentials. We describe conformal and superconformal versions of this cosmological attractor mechanism.

Born-Infeld with Higher Derivatives

We present new models of non-linear electromagnetism which satisfy the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino current conservation and are, therefore, self-dual. The new models differ from the Born-Infeld-type models in that they deform the Maxwell theory starting with terms like $λ(\partial F)^{4}$. We provide a recursive algorithm to find all higher order terms in the action of the form $λ^{n} \partial ^{4n} F^{2n+2} $, which are necessary for the U(1) duality current conservation. We use one of these models to find a self-dual completion of the $λ(\partial F)^{4}$ correction to the open string action. We discuss the implication of these findings for the issue of UV finiteness of ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.

Covariant procedures for perturbative non-linear deformation of duality-invariant theories

We analyze a recent conjecture regarding the perturbative construction of non-linear deformations of all classically duality invariant theories, including N=8 supergravity. Starting with an initial quartic deformation, we engineer a procedure that generates a particular non-linear deformation (Born-Infeld) of the Maxwell theory. This procedure requires the introduction of an infinite number of modifications to a constraint which eliminates degrees of freedom consistent with the duality and field content of the system. We discuss the extension of this procedure to N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric theories, and comment on its potential to either construct new supergravity theories with non-linear Born-Infeld type duality, or to constrain the finiteness of N=8 supergravity.

Degeneration of Groups of Type E7 and Minimal Coupling in Supergravity

We study properties of D = 4, N >1 extended supergravities (and related compactifications of superstring theory) and their consistent truncation to the phenomenologically interesting models of N = 1 supergravity. This involves a detailed classification of the "degenerations" of the duality groups of type E7, when the corresponding quartic invariant polynomial built from the symplectic irreducible representation of G4 "degenerates" into a perfect square. With regard to cosmological applications, we conclude that the consistent truncation to N = 1 from higher-dimensional or higher-N theory gives a zero measure minimal coupling of vectors. A non-minimal coupling involving vectors coupled to scalars and axions is generic. These features of supergravity, following from the electric-magnetic duality, may be useful in other applications, like stabilization of moduli, and in studies of non-perturbative black-hole solutions of supergravity/string theory.

N=2 Supersymmetry and U(1)-Duality

Understanding the consequences of the E_{7(7)} duality on the UV properties of N=8 supergravity requires unravelling when and how duality-covariant actions can be constructed so as to accommodate duality-invariant counter-terms. For non-supersymmetric abelian gauge theories exhibiting U(1)-duality, with and without derivative couplings, it was shown that such a covariant construction is always possible. In this paper we describe a similar procedure for the construction of covariant non-linear deformations of U(1)-duality invariant theories in the presence of rigid N=2 supersymmetry. This is a concrete step towards studying the interplay of duality and extended supersymmetry.

New E77 invariants and amplitudes

We construct a new class of manifest E77 duality invariants, which generalize the Cartan quartic invariant, familiar from studies of the black hole entropy. The new ones, being four-linear, are designed for studies of the four-vector amplitudes and to be used, upon supersymmetrization, as initial sources of deformation for the non-linear higher-derivative generalizations of the linear twisted self-duality condition. We show, however, that the new invariants are inconsistent with the expected UV divergent amplitudes in extended supergravities with non-degenerate duality groups of type E7. When E77 degenerates into U(1) the new invariants reproduce the recently discovered source of deformation for the Born-Infeld duality invariant model with higher derivatives relevant to UV divergences of the D3 brane action. These facts may explain the UV properties of perturbative supergravity.

On Absence of 3-loop Divergence in N=4 Supergravity

We argue that N=4 supergravity is 3-loop UV finite because the relevant supersymmetric candidate counterterm is known to be SL(2, R)x SO(6) invariant, which violates the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino current conservation. Analogous arguments, based on the universality properties of groups of type E7, also apply to N=5,6,8 in 4,5,7 loops, respectively, since the 1/N BPS invariants break duality symmetry between Bianchi identities and quantum corrected vector field equations.

Creation of Matter in the Universe and Groups of Type E7

We relate the mechanism of matter creation in the universe after inflation to a simple and universal mathematical property of extended N > 1 supergravities and related compactifications of superstring theory. We show that in all such models, the inflaton field may decay into vector fields due to a nonminimal scalar-vector coupling. This coupling is compulsory for all scalars except N=2 hyperscalars. The proof is based on the fact that all extended supergravities described by symmetric coset spaces G/H have duality groups G of type E7, with exception of U(p,n) models. For N=2 we prove separately that special geometry requires a non-minimal scalar-vector coupling. Upon truncation to N=1 supergravity, extended models generically preserve the non-minimal scalar-vector coupling, with exception of U(p,n) models and hyperscalars. For some string theory/supergravity inflationary models, this coupling provides the only way to complete the process of creation of matter in the early universe.

E{7(7)} Symmetry and Finiteness of N=8 Supergravity

We study N=8 supergravity deformed by the presence of the candidate counterterms. We show that even though they are invariant under undeformed E{7(7)}, all of the candidate counterterms violate the deformed E{7(7)} current conservation. The same conclusion follows from the uniqueness of the Lorentz and SU(8) covariant, E{7(7)} invariant unitarity constraint expressing the 56-dimensional E{7(7)} doublet via 28 independent vectors. Therefore E{7(7)} duality predicts the all-loop UV finiteness of perturbative N=8 supergravity.

From lightcone actions to maximally supersymmetric amplitudes

In this article actions for N=4 SYM and N=8 supergravity are formulated in terms of a chiral superfield, which contains only the physical degrees of freedom of either theory. In these new actions, which originate from the lightcone superspace, the supergravity cubic vertex is the square of the gauge theory one (omitting the color structures). Amplitude calculations using the corresponding Feynman supergraph rules are tedious, but can be simplified by choosing a preferred superframe. Recursive calculations of all MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM and the four-point N=8 supergravity amplitude are shown to agree with the known results and connections to the BCFW recursion relations are pointed out. Finally, the new path integrals are discussed in the context of the double-copy property relating N=4 SYM theory to N=8 supergravity.

Generalized Attractor Points in Gauged Supergravity

The attractor mechanism governs the near-horizon geometry of extremal black holes in ungauged 4D N=2 supergravity theories and in Calabi-Yau compactifications of string theory. In this paper, we study a natural generalization of this mechanism to solutions of arbitrary 4D N=2 gauged supergravities. We define generalized attractor points as solutions of an ansatz which reduces the Einstein, gauge field, and scalar equations of motion to algebraic equations. The simplest generalized attractor geometries are characterized by non-vanishing constant anholonomy coefficients in an orthonormal frame. Basic examples include Lifshitz and Schrodinger solutions, as well as AdS and dS vacua. There is a generalized attractor potential whose critical points are the attractor points, and its extremization explains the algebraic nature of the equations governing both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric attractors.

N=8 Counterterms and E7(7) Current Conservation

We examine conservation of the E7(7) Noether-Gaillard-Zumino current in the presence of N=8 supergravity counterterms using the momentum space helicity formalism, which significantly simplifies the calculations. The main result is that the 4-point counterterms at any loop order L are forbidden by the E7(7) current conservation identity. We also clarify the relation between linearized and full non-linear superinvariants as candidate counterterms. This enables us to show that all n-point counterterms at L=7, 8 are forbidden since they provide a non-linear completions of the 4-point ones. This supports and exemplifies our general proof in arXiv:1103.4115 of perturbative UV finiteness of N=8 supergravity.

Superconformal Symmetry, NMSSM, and Inflation

We identify a particularly simple class of supergravity models describing superconformal coupling of matter to supergravity. In these models, which we call the canonical superconformal supergravity (CSS) models, the kinetic terms in the Jordan frame are canonical, and the scalar potential is the same as in the global theory. The pure supergravity part of the total action has a local Poincare supersymmetry, whereas the chiral and vector multiplets coupled to supergravity have a larger local superconformal symmetry. The scale-free globally supersymmetric theories, such as the NMSSM with a scale-invariant superpotential, can be naturally embedded into this class of theories. After the supergravity embedding, the Jordan frame scalar potential of such theories remains scale free; it is quartic, it contains no mass terms, no nonrenormalizable terms, no cosmological constant. The local superconformal symmetry can be broken by additional terms, which, in the small field limit, are suppressed by the gravitational coupling. This can be achieved by introducing the nonminimal scalar-curvature coupling, and by taking into account interactions with a hidden sector. In this approach, the smallness of the mass parameters in the NMSSM may be traced back to the original superconformal invariance. This allows to address the μ-problem and the cosmological domain wall problem in this model, and to implement chaotic inflation in the NMSSM. We discuss the gravitino problem in the NMSSM inflation, as well as the possibility to obtain a broad class of new versions of chaotic inflation in supergravity.

Jordan Frame Supergravity and Inflation in NMSSM

We present a complete explicit N=1, d=4 supergravity action in an arbitrary Jordan frame with non-minimal scalar-curvature coupling of the form $Φ(z, \bar z)\, R$. The action is derived by suitably gauge-fixing the superconformal action. The theory has a modified Kaehler geometry, and it exhibits a significant dependence on the frame function $Φ(z, \bar z)$ and its derivatives over scalars, in the bosonic as well as in the fermionic part of the action. Under certain simple conditions, the scalar kinetic terms in the Jordan frame have a canonical form. We consider an embedding of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) gauge theory into supergravity, clarifying the Higgs inflation model recently proposed by Einhorn and Jones. We find that the conditions for canonical kinetic terms are satisfied for the NMSSM scalars in the Jordan frame, which leads to a simple action. However, we find that the gauge singlet field experiences a strong tachyonic instability during inflation in this model. Thus, a modification of the model is required to support the Higgs-type inflation.

Light-by-Light Scattering Effect in Light-Cone Supergraphs

We give a relatively simple explanation of the light-cone supergraph prediction for the UV properties of the maximally supersymmetric theories. It is based on the existence of a dynamical supersymmetry which is not manifest in the light-cone supergraphs. It suggests that N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is UV finite and N=8 supergravity is UV finite at least until 7 loops whereas the $n$-point amplitudes have no UV divergences at least until $L=n+3$. Here we show that this prediction can be deduced from the properties of light-cone supergraphs analogous to the light-by-light scattering effect in QED. A technical aspect of the argument relies on the observation that the dynamical supersymmetry action is, in fact, a compensating field-dependent gauge transformation required for the retaining the light-cone gauge condition $A_+=0$.

New models of chaotic inflation in supergravity

We introduce a new class of models of chaotic inflation inspired by the superconformal approach to supergravity. This class of models allows a functional freedom of choice of the inflaton potential V = |f(ϕ)|^2. The simplest model of this type has a quadratic potential m^2ϕ^2/2. Another model describes an inflaton field with the standard symmetry breaking potential λ^2 (ϕ^2-v^2)^2. Depending on the value of v and on initial conditions for inflation, the spectral index n_s may take any value from 0.97 to 0.93, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r may span the interval form 0.3 to 0.01. A generalized version of this model has a potential λ^2 (ϕ^α-v^α)^2. At large ϕand α> 0, this model describes chaotic inflation with the power law potential ϕ^{2α}. For α< 0, this potential describes chaotic inflation with a potential which becomes flat in the large field limit. We further generalize these models by introducing a nonminimal coupling of the inflaton field to gravity. The mechanism of moduli stabilization used in these models allows to improve and generalize several previously considered models of chaotic inflation in supergravity.

New N=4 SYM Path Integral

Using Lorentz covariant spinor helicity formalism we reorganize the unitary scalar superfield light-cone path integral for the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In new variables in the chiral Fourier superspace the quadratic and cubic parts of the classical action have manifest Lorentz, kinematical and dynamical supersymmetry, with the exception of terms which contribute only to the contact terms in the supergraphs with propagators shrinking to a point. These terms have the same structure as supergraphs with quartic light-cone vertices, which break dynamical supersymmetry. We present evidence that all complicated terms breaking dynamical supersymmetry have to cancel and therefore can be omitted. It is plausible that the new form of the path integral leads to a set of relatively simple unitarity based rules with manifest N=4 supersymmetry.

Observations on Arithmetic Invariants and U-Duality Orbits in N =8 Supergravity

We establish a relation between time-like, light-like and space-like orbits of the non-compact E{7(7)}(R)symmetry and discrete E{7(7)}(Z) invariants. We discuss the U-duality invariant formula for the degeneracy of states d(Q) which in the approximation of large occupation numbers reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for regular black holes with AdS_2 horizon. We explain why the states belonging to light-like orbits, corresponding to classical solutions of "light black holes with null singularity", decouple from the corresponding index. We also present a separate U-duality invariant formula for the class of light-like orbits specified by discrete E{7(7)}(Z) invariants. We conclude that the present study of the non-perturbative sector of the theory does not reveal any contradiction with the conjectured all-loop perturbative finiteness of D=4 N=8 supergravity.

Perturbative and Non-perturbative N =8 Supergravity

We study extremal black holes, their ADM mass and area of the horizon in N = 8 supergravity. Contrary to intuition gained from N = 2, 4 theories, in N = 8 supergravity BPS states may become massless only at the boundary of moduli space. We show that stringy states described in [1], which have no mass gap and survive in the toroidal compactification in addition to massless states of perturbative N = 8 supergravity, display a null singularity in four-dimensional space-time, when viewed as solutions of N = 8 Einstein equations. We analyze known methods of resolving such singularities and explain why they do not work in D=4, N = 8 supergravity. We discuss possible implications for the issue of UV finiteness of the four-dimensional N = 8 perturbation theory.

The Ultraviolet Finiteness of N=8 Supergravity

We study counterterms (CT's), candidates for UV divergences in the four-dimensional N=8 supergravity. They have been constructed long ago in a Lorentz covariant on shell superspace and recently in the chiral light-cone (LC) superspace. We prove that all of these CT's are ruled out since they are not available in the real LC superspace. This implies the perturbative UV finiteness of d=4 N=8 supergravity under the assumption that supersymmetry and continuous E7 symmetry are anomaly-free. The proof, based on the chiral nature of CT's in the LC superspace, is a generalization of the perturbative F-term non-renormalization theorem for N=8 supergravity.

N=8 Supergravity on the Light Cone

We construct the generating functional for the light-cone superfield amplitudes in a chiral momentum superspace. It generates the n-point particle amplitudes which on shell are equivalent to the covariant ones. Based on the action depending on unconstrained light-cone chiral scalar superfield, this functional provides a regular d=4 QFT path integral derivation of the Nair-type amplitude constructions. By performing a Fourier transform into the light-cone chiral coordinate superspace we find that the quantum corrections to the superfield amplitudes with n legs are non-local in transverse directions for the diagrams with the number of loops smaller than n(n-1)/2 +1. This suggests the reason why UV infinities, which are proportional to local vertices, cannot appear at least before 7 loops in the light-cone supergraph computations. By combining the E7 symmetry with the supersymmetric recursion relations we argue that the light-cone supergraphs predict all loop finiteness of d=4 N=8 supergravity.

Issues in Type IIA Uplifting

Moduli stabilization in the type IIA massive string theory so far was achieved only in the AdS vacua. The uplifting to dS vacua has not been performed as yet: neither the analogs of type IIB anti-D3 brane at the tip of the conifold, nor the appropriate D-terms have been identified. The hope was recently expressed that the F-term uplifting may work. We investigate this possibility in the context of a simplified version of the type IIA model developed in hep-th/0505160 and find that the F-term does not uplift the AdS vacua to dS vacua with positive CC. Thus it remains a challenging task to find phenomenologically acceptable vacua in the type IIA string theory.

An index for the Dirac operator on D3 branes with background fluxes

We study the problem of instanton generated superpotentials in Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications directly in type IIB string theory. To this end, we derive the Dirac equation on a Euclidean D3 brane in the presence of background fluxes. We propose an index which governs whether the generation of a superpotential in the effective 4d theory by D3 brane instantons is possible. Applying the formalism to various classes of examples, including the K3 x T^2/Z_2 orientifold, in the absence and presence of fluxes, we show that our results are consistent with conclusions attainable via duality from an M-theory analysis.

On N=8 attractors

We derive and solve the black hole attractor conditions of N=8 supergravity by finding the critical points of the corresponding black hole potential. This is achieved by a simple generalization of the symplectic structure of the special geometry to all extended supergravities with $N>2$. There are two solutions for regular black holes, one for 1/8 BPS ones and one for the non-BPS. We discuss the solutions of the moduli at the horizon for BPS attractors using N=2 language. An interpretation of some of these results in N=2 STU black hole context helps to clarify the general features of the black hole attractors.

The Non-BPS Black Hole Attractor Equation

We study the attractor mechanism for extremal non-BPS black holes with an infinite throat near horizon geometry, developing, as we do so, a physical argument as to why such a mechanism does not exist in non-extremal cases. We present a detailed derivation of the non-supersymmetric attractor equation. This equation defines the stabilization of moduli near the black hole horizon: the fixed moduli take values specified by electric and magnetic charges corresponding to the fluxes in a Calabi Yau compactification of string theory. They also define the so-called double-extremal solutions. In some examples, studied previously by Tripathy and Trivedi, we solve the equation and show that the moduli are fixed at values which may also be derived from the critical points of the black hole potential.

Fixing All Moduli for M-Theory on K3xK3

We analyze M-theory compactified on K3xK3 with fluxes preserving half the supersymmetry and its F-theory limit, which is dual to an orientifold of the type IIB string on $K3\times T^2/Z_2$. The geometry of attractive K3 surfaces plays a significant role in the analysis. We prove that the number of choices for the K3 surfaces is finite and we show how they can be completely classified. We list the possibilities in one case. We then study the instanton effects and see that they will generically fix all of the moduli. We also discuss situations where the instanton effects might not fix all the moduli.

Landscape, the Scale of SUSY Breaking, and Inflation

We argue that in the simplest version of the KKLT model, the maximal value of the Hubble constant during inflation cannot exceed the present value of the gravitino mass, H< m_{3/2}. This may have important implications for string cosmology and for the scale of the SUSY breaking in this model. If one wants to have inflation on high energy scale, one must develop phenomenological models with an extremely large gravitino mass. On the other hand, if one insists that the gravitino mass should be O(1 TeV), one will need to develop models with a very low scale of inflation. We show, however, that one can avoid these restrictions in a more general class of KKLT models based on the racetrack superpotential with more than one exponent. In this case one can combine a small gravitino mass and low scale of SUSY breaking with the high energy scale of inflation.

New Attractors

We derive new algebraic attractor equations describing supersymmetric flux vacua of type IIB string theory. The first term in these equations, proportional to the gravitino mass (the central charge), is similar to the attractor equations for moduli fixed by the charges near the horizon of the supersymmetric black holes. The second term does not have a counterpart in the theory of black hole attractors. It is proportional to a mass matrix mixing axino-dilatino with complex structure modulino. This allows stabilization of moduli for vanishing central charge, which was not possible for BPS black holes. Finally, we propose a new set of attractor equations for non-supersymmetric black holes and for non-supersymmetric flux vacua.

D-term strings

We study the embedding of cosmic strings, related to the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution, into d=4, N=1 supergravity. We find that the local cosmic string solution which saturates the BPS bound of supergravity with $D$-term potential for the Higgs field and with constant Fayet--Iliopoulos term, has 1/2 of supersymmetry unbroken. We observe an interesting relation between the gravitino supersymmetry transformation, positive energy condition and the deficit angle of the cosmic string. We argue that the string solutions with magnetic flux with F-term potential cannot be supersymmetric, which leads us to a conjecture that D1-strings (wrapped D(1+q)-branes) of string theory in the effective 4d supergravity are described by the D-term strings that we study in this paper. We give various consistency checks of this conjecture, and show that it highlights some generic properties of non-BPS string theory backgrounds, such as brane-anti-brane systems. Supersymmetry breaking by such systems can be viewed as FI D-term breaking, which implies, under certain conditions, the presence of gauged R-symmetry on such backgrounds. The D-term nature of the brane-anti-brane energy can also provide information on the superpotential for the tachyon, which Higgses the R-symmetry. In this picture, the inter-brane force can be viewed as a result of the world-volume gauge coupling renormalization by the open string loops.

Hypermultiplets, domain walls and supersymmetric attractors

We establish general properties of supersymmetric flow equations and of the superpotential of five-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector and hypermultiplets. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for BPS domain walls and find a set of algebraic attractor equations for N = 2 critical points. As an example we describe in detail the gauging of the universal hypermultiplet and a vector multiplet. We study a two-parameter family of superpotentials with supersymmetric AdS critical points and we find, in particular, an N = 2 embedding for the UV-IR solution of Freedman, Gubser, Pilch and Warner of the N = 8 theory. We comment on the relevance of these results for brane world constructions.

String Theory and Hybrid Inflation/Acceleration

We find a description of hybrid inflation in (3+1)-dimensions using brane dynamics of Hanany-Witten type. P-term inflation/acceleration of the universe with the hybrid potential has a slow-roll de Sitter stage and a waterfall stage which leads towards an N=2 supersymmetric ground state. We identify the slow-roll stage of inflation with a non-supersymmetric `Coulomb phase' with Fayet-Iliopoulos term. This stage ends when the mass squared of one of the scalars in the hypermultiplet becomes negative. At that moment the brane system starts undergoing a phase transition via tachyon condensation to a fully Higgsed supersymmetric vacuum which is the absolute ground state of P-term inflation. A string theory/cosmology dictionary is provided, which leads to constraints on parameters of the brane construction from cosmological experiments. We display a splitting of mass levels reminiscent of the Zeeman effect due to spontaneous supersymmetry breaking.

Supersymmetry of RS bulk and brane

We review the construction of actions with supersymmetry on spaces with a domain wall. The latter objects act as sources inducing a jump in the gauge coupling constant. Despite these singularities, supersymmetry can be formulated, maintaining its role as a square root of translations in this singular space. The setup is designed for the application in five dimensions related to the Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario. The space has two domain walls. We discuss the solutions of the theory with fixed scalars and full preserved supersymmetry, in which case one of the branes can be pushed to infinity, and solutions where half of the supersymmetries are preserved.

Supertwistors as Quarks of SU(2,2|4)

The GS superstring on AdS_5 x S^5 has a nonlinearly realized, spontaneously broken SU(2,2|4) symmetry. Here we introduce a two-dimensional model in which the unbroken SU(2,2|4) symmetry is linearly realized. The basic variables are supertwistors, which transform in the fundamental representation of this supergroup. The quantization of this supertwistor model leads to the complete oscillator construction of the unitary irreducible representations of the centrally extended SU(2,2|4). They include the states of d=4 SYM theory, massless and KK states of AdS_5 supergravity, and the descendants on AdS_5 of the standard massive string states, which form intermediate and long supermultiplets. We present examples of such multiplets and discuss possible states of solitonic and (p,q) strings.

Superisometries of the adS*S Superspace

We find the superisometry of the near-horizon superspace, forming the superconformal algebra. We present here the explicit form of the transformation of the bosonic and fermionic coordinates (as well as the compensating Lorentz-type transformation) which keeps the geometry invariant. We comment on i) the BPS condition of the branes in adS background and ii) significant simplification of superisometries of the gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz action in adS(5)*S(5) background.

Bound States of Branes with Minimal Energy

It is pointed out that the energy of the bound states of D-branes and strings is determined by the central charge of the space-time supersymmetry. The universality which is seen at the black hole horizon appears also on the D-brane side: the total energy of the bound states of a given number of branes has a minimum when considered as a function of the independent parameters (moduli). This provides a new evidence that the near-horizon space-time geometry of the dilaton black holes can be represented by the bound states of branes. The axion-dilaton dyonic black holes have the mass formula of the non-threshold type bound state. Upon uplifting to higher dimensions they may give information about such states.

Brane-anti-brane Democracy

We suggest a duality invariant formula for the entropy and temperature of non-extreme black holes in supersymmetric string theory. The entropy is given in terms of the duality invariant parameter of the deviation from extremality and 56 SU(8) covariant central charges. It interpolates between the entropies of Schwarzschild solution and extremal solutions with various amount of unbroken supersymmetries and therefore serves for classification of black holes in supersymmetric string theories. We introduce the second auxiliary 56 via E(7) symmetric constraint. The symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of these two multiplets are related via moduli to the corresponding two fundamental representations of E(7): brane and anti-brane "numbers." Using the CPT as well as C symmetry of the entropy formula and duality one can explain the mysterious simplicity of the non-extreme black hole area formula in terms of branes and anti-branes.

STU Black Holes and String Triality

We find double-extreme black holes associated with the special geometry of the Calabi-Yau moduli space with the prepotential F=STU. The area formula is STU-moduli independent and has ${[SL(2,Z)]}^3$ symmetry in space of charges. The dual version of this theory without prepotential treats the dilaton S asymmetric versus T,U-moduli. We display the dual relation between new (STU) black holes and stringy (S|TU) black holes using particular Sp(8, Z) transformation. The area formula of one theory equals that of the dual theory when expressed in terms of dual charges. We analyse the relation between (STU) black holes to string triality of black holes: (S|TU), (T|US), (U|ST) solutions. In the democratic STU-symmetric version we find that all three S and T and U duality symmetries are non-perturbative and mix electric and magnetic charges.

Supersymmetry and Attractors

We find a general principle which allows one to compute the area of the horizon of N=2 extremal black holes as an extremum of the central charge. One considers the ADM mass equal to the central charge as a function of electric and magnetic charges and moduli and extremizes this function in the moduli space (a minimum corresponds to a fixed point of attraction). The extremal value of the square of the central charge provides the area of the horizon, which depends only on electric and magnetic charges. The doubling of unbroken supersymmetry at the fixed point of attraction for N=2 black holes near the horizon is derived via conformal flatness of the Bertotti-Robinson-type geometry. These results provide an explicit model independent expression for the macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of N=2 black holes which is manifestly duality invariant. The presence of hypermultiplets in the solution does not affect the area formula. Various examples of the general formula are displayed. We outline the attractor mechanism in N=4,8 supersymmetries and the relation to the N=2 case. The entropy-area formula in five dimensions, recently discussed in the literature, is also seen to be obtained by extremizing the 5d central charge.

Universality of Sypersymmetric Attractors

The macroscopic entropy-area formula for supersymmetric black holes in N=2,4,8 theories is found to be universal: in d=4 it is always given by the square of the largest of the central charges extremized in the moduli space. The proof of universality is based on the fact that the doubling of unbroken supersymmetry near the black hole horizon requires that all central charges other than Z=M vanish at the attractor point for N=4,8. The ADM mass at the extremum can be computed in terms of duality symmetric quartic invariants which are moduli independent. The extension of these results for d=5, N=1,2,4 is also reported. A duality symmetric expression for the energy of the ground state with spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry is provided by the power 1/2 (2/3) of the black hole area of the horizon in d=4 (d=5). It is suggested that the universal duality symmetric formula for the energy of the ground state in supersymmetric gravity is given by the modulus of the maximal central charge at the attractor point in any supersymmetric theory in any dimension.

BLACK HOLE MULTIPLETS AND SPONTANEOUS BREAKING OF LOCAL SUPERSYMMETRY

We classify states saturating a double or a single supersymmetric positivity bound of a four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetry. The massive four-dimensional double-bound states (Bogomolny states) are shown to form a light-like representation of ten-dimensional supersymmetry. The single-bound states form a massive representation (centrino multiplet) of a four-dimensional supersymmetry. The first component of the centrino multiplet is identified with extreme black holes with regular horizon which have one quarter of unbroken supersymmetry. The centrino multiplet includes a massive spin 3/2 state, the centrino, as a highest spin state. Existence of massive black hole supermultiplets may affect the massless sector of the theory. Assuming that gluino condensate is formed one can study its properties. The bilinear combination of covariantly constant Killing spinors supplies the possible form for a gluino condensate. The condensate has null properties, does not introduce a cosmological constant, and may lead to a spontaneous breaking of local supersymmetry. This suggests that centrino may provide a consistent super-Higgs mechanism.

Duality Symmetric Quantization of Superstring

A general covariant quantization of superparticle, Green-Schwarz superstring and a supermembrane with manifest supersymmetry and duality symmetry is proposed. This quantization provides a natural quantum mechanical description of curved BPS-type backgrounds related to the ultra-short supersymmetry multiplets. Half-size commuting and anticommuting Killing spinors admitted by such backgrounds in quantum theory become truncated $κ$-symmetry ghosts. The symmetry of Killing spinors under dualities transfers to the symmetry of the spectrum of states. GS superstring in the generalized semi-light-cone gauge can be quantized consistently in the background of ten-dimensional supersymmetric gravitational waves. Upon compactification they become supersymmetric electrically charged black holes, either massive or massless. However, the generalized light-cone gauge breaks S-duality. We propose a new family of gauges, which we call black hole gauges. These gauges are suitable for quantization both in flat Minkowski space and in the black hole background, and they are duality symmetric. As an example, a manifestly S-duality symmetric black hole gauge is constructed in terms of the axion-dilaton-electric-magnetic black hole hair. We also suggest the U-duality covariant class of gauges for type II superstrings.

Supersymmetry and Stationary Solutions in Dilaton-Axion Gravity

New stationary solutions of $4$-dimensional dilaton-axion gravity are presented, which correspond to the charged Taub-NUT and Israel-Wilson-Perjes (IWP) solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory. The charged axion-dilaton Taub-NUT solutions are shown to have a number of interesting properties: i) manifest $SL(2,R)$ symmetry, ii) an infinite throat in an extremal limit, iii) the throat limit coincides with an exact CFT construction. The IWP solutions are shown to admit supersymmetric Killing spinors, when embedded in $d=4,N=4$ supergravity. This poses a problem for the interpretation of supersymmetric rotating solutions as physical ground states. In the context of $10$-dimensional geometry, we show that dimensionally lifted versions of the IWP solutions are dual to certain gravitational waves in string theory.

Dilaton Black Holes Near the Horizon

Generic $U(1)^2$ 4-d black holes with unbroken $N=1$ supersymmetry are shown to tend to a Robinson-Bertotti type geometry with a linear dilaton and doubling of unbroken supersymmetries near the horizon. Purely magnetic dilatonic black holes, which have unbroken $N=2$ supersymmetry, behave near the horizon as a 2-d linear dilaton vacuum $\otimes \, S^2$. This geometry is invariant under 8 supersymmetries, i.e. half of the original $N=4$ supersymmetries are unbroken. The supersymmetric positivity bound, which requires the mass of the 4-d dilaton black holes to be greater than or equal to the central charge, corresponds to positivity of mass for a class of stringy 2-d black holes.

Entropy and Action of Dilaton Black Holes

We present a detailed calculation of the entropy and action of $U(1)~2$ dilaton black holes, and show that both quantities coincide with one quarter of the area of the event horizon. Our methods of calculation make it possible to find an explanation of the rule $S = A/4$ for all static, spherically symmetric black holes studied so far. We show that the only contribution to the entropy comes from the extrinsic curvature term at the horizon, which gives $S = A/4$ independently of the charge(s) of the black hole, presence of scalar fields, etc. Previously, this result did not have a general explanation, but was established on a case-by-case basis. The on-shell Lagrangian for maximally supersymmetric extreme dilaton black holes is also calculated and shown to vanish, in agreement with the result obtained by taking the limit of the expression obtained for black holes with regular horizon. The physical meaning of the entropy is discussed in relation to the issue of splitting of extreme black holes.
