Lattice-site-specific spin-dynamics in double perovskite Sr2CoOsO6

We have studied the magnetic properties and spin-dynamics of the structurally-ordered double perovskite Sr2_2CoOsO6_6. Our neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation and ac-susceptibility measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases on cooling from room temperature down to 2 K. In the first AFM phase, with transition temperature TN=108T_{\mathrm{N}}=108 K, cobalt (3d7d^7, S=3/2S=3/2) and osmium (5d2d^2, S=1S=1) moments fluctuate dynamically, while their \textit{average} effective moments undergo long-range order. In the second AFM phase with TN=67T_{\mathrm{N}}=67 K, cobalt moments first become frozen and induce a noncollinear spin-canted AFM state, while dynamically fluctuating osmium moments are later frozen into a randomly canted state at T≈5T\approx 5 K. Our \textit{ab initio} calculations indicate that the effective exchange coupling between cobalt and osmium sites is rather weak, so that cobalt and osmium sublattices exhibit different ground states and spin-dynamics, making Sr2_2CoOsO6_6 distinct from previously reported double-perovskite compounds.

Low-moment magnetism in the double perovskites Ba2MOsO6 (M=Li,Na)

The magnetic ground states of the isostructural double perovskites Ba2_2NaOsO6_6 and Ba2_2LiOsO6_6 are investigated with muon-spin rotation. In Ba2_2NaOsO6_6 long-range magnetic order is detected via the onset of a spontaneous muon-spin precession signal below Tc=7.2±0.2  KT_{\mathrm{c}}=7.2\pm 0.2\;\mathrm{K}, while in Ba2_2LiOsO6_6 a static but spatially-disordered internal field is found below 8 K. A novel probabilistic argument is used to show from the observed precession frequencies that the magnetic ground state in Ba2_2NaOsO6_6 is most likely to be low-moment (≈0.2\approx 0.2\,μBμ_{\rm B}) ferromagnetism and not canted antiferromagnetism. Ba2_2LiOsO6_6 is antiferromagnetic and we find a spin-flop transition at 5.5\,T. A reduced osmium moment is common to both compounds, probably arising from a combination of spin-orbit coupling and frustration.

Comparison of the normal state properties of κκ-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu(NCS)2_2 and its deuterated analogue in high magnetic fields and under high hydrostatic pressures

Details of the Fermi-surface topology of deuterated κκ-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu(NCS)2_2 ~have been measured as a function of pressure, and compared with equivalent measurements of the undeuterated salt. We find that the superconducting transition temperature is much more dramatically suppressed by increasing pressure in the deuterated salt. It is suggested that this is linked to pressure-induced changes in the Fermi-surface topology, which occur more rapidly in the deuterated salt than in the undeuterated salt as the pressure is raised. Our data suggest that the negative isotope effect observed on deuteration is due to small differences in Fermi-surface topology caused by the isotopic substitution.
