Tameness of Margulis space-times with parabolics

Let $\mathbf{E}$ be a flat Lorentzian space of signature $(2, 1)$. A Margulis space-time is a noncompact complete flat Lorentzian $3$-manifold $\mathbf{E}/Γ$ with a free holonomy group $Γ$ of rank $\mathbf{g}, \mathbf{g} \geq 2$. We consider the case when $Γ$ contains a parabolic element. We obtain a characterization of proper $Γ$-actions in terms of Margulis and Drumm-Charette invariants. We show that $\mathbf{E}/Γ$ is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact handlebody of genus $\mathbf{g}$ generalizing our earlier result. Also, we obtain a bordification of the Margulis space-time with parabolics by adding a real projective surface at infinity giving us a compactification as a manifold relative to parabolic end neighborhoods. Our method is to estimate the translational parts of the affine transformation group and use some $3$-manifold topology.

Automorphisms of two-generator free groups and spaces of isometric actions on the hyperbolic plane

The automorphisms of a two-generator free group acting on the space of orientation-preserving isometric actions of on hyperbolic 3-space defines a dynamical system. Those actions which preserve a hyperbolic plane but not an orientation on that plane is an invariant subsystem, which reduces to an action on R^3 by polynomial automorphisms preserving the cubic polynomial and an area form on the level surfaces. We describe the dynamical decomposition of this action. The domain of discontinuity of this action corresponds to geometric structures: either complete hyperbolic structures on the 2-holed cross-surface (projective plane) with cusps and funnels, or complete hyperbolic structures on a one-holed Klein bottle, or hyperbolic structures on a Klein bottle with one conical singularity. The action is ergodic on the complement of the orbit of the Fricke space of the 2-holed cross-surface, and we show that the orbit of the generalized Fricke space of the one-holed Klein bottle is open and dense.

Crooked Halfspaces

We develop the Lorentzian geometry of a crooked halfspace in 2+1-dimensional Minkowski space. We calculate the affine, conformal and isometric automorphism groups of a crooked halfspace, and discuss its stratification into orbit types, giving an explicit slice for the action of the automorphism group. The set of parallelism classes of timelike lines, or particles, in a crooked halfspace is a geodesic halfplane in the hyperbolic plane. Every point in an open crooked halfspace lies on a particle. The correspondence between crooked halfspaces and halfplanes in hyperbolic 2-space preserves the partial order defined by inclusion, and the involution defined by complementarity. We find conditions for when a particle lies completely in a crooked half space. We revisit the disjointness criterion for crooked planes developed by Drumm and Goldman in terms of the semigroup of translations preserving a crooked halfspace. These ideas are then applied to describe foliations of Minkowski space by crooked planes.

Proper affine actions and geodesic flows of hyperbolic surfaces

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an affine deformation of a Schottky subgroup of O(2,1) to act properly on affine space. There exists a real-valued biaffine map between the cohomology of the Schottky group and the space of geodesic currents on the corresponding hyperbolic surface S. For a fixed cohomology class, this map is uniformly positive or uniformly negative on the space of geodesic currents if and only if the corresponding affine deformation is proper. As a corollary, the deformation space of proper affine deformations is an open convex cone.

The deformation spaces of convex RP^2-structures on 2-orbifolds

We determine that the deformation space of convex real projective structures, that is, projectively flat torsion-free connections with the geodesic convexity property on a compact 2-orbifold of negative Euler characteristic is homeomorphic to a cell of certain dimension. The basic techniques are from Thurston's lecture notes on hyperbolic 2-orbifolds, and the previous work of Goldman on convex real projective structures on surfaces.
